Hi Tim! I'm a Mexican guy who just fell in love with spey casting and Steelhead! And when people (Mexicans guys) ask me why I spend so much money on gear and drive 950 miles (from Las Vegas) they just look at me like I'm crazy! I own a Hardy bougle and a Hardy Perfect! And when you hook a Steelhead and start to peel line from a Hardy the adrenaline is something you can't describe! 😃
And the tug is the drug! There is something about salmon and steelhead fresh from the salt. The head movements and pulses of energy the fish transmit up the line to your rod... addictive!!
Don't feel guilty! I have half a dozen Hardy's, Abels, Lamson's, Sage's, Hatch's, Orvis's, and if they are made in England or America you can't go wrong. I know I can't use more than one at a time but they are such beautiful objects and when I fish with them they greatly enhance the pleasure that is fishing! Kind regards and tight lines from down-under in NZ.
LOL! When you mentioned your wife and your gear...it's the same reaction we all get! I started cracking up! I am enjoying all your video's and have learned alot from you. Thank you very much! Brent
It's a beauty. So many older Hardys are still in service... says much as to their build quality and durability. Like Meze said, your grand kids will fish it. Glad you treated yourself to it.
Good on you Bro - this is a reel that will see you out and the next few generations too. Mark my words, the missus will develop an affection for it in time - you'll know this has happened when she starts calling it 'our' reel!
Tim it is so well made it should give you joy for the rest of your fishing life and prob your sons too. Its impossible to explain to none anglers just how much a beautiful Hardy reel can enhance the fishing experience.
Nice comments about Fin and Fire, too. Couldn't agree more! Drop by, drink a beer, buy something or not. Good staff and good inventory of essential gear.
I was on holiday in Alnwick, England a few months back and saw this exact reel in Hardys retail shop (it has the museum on the top floor). This reel really stood out and I was really close to buying it. I was with my wife at the time and she applied "the handbrake" :-) Maybe one day....
Great video. I just picked up a 3 3/8” perfect. Never tell the wife about the amazing clicky sound. Tell her it’s an investment. Good on you Brother, from the Skykomish river Washington.
It's a bit of nostalgia for me. I feel a bit like I'm connecting with generations from ages ago. That click plus the old school craftsmanship is what it's about.
Life’s too short not to buy good quality fly fishing gear. Just got my 4” Bougle today. Never owned a nicer reel. I’ve been taking it out of the case every hour admiring the damn thing. The finish is soothe as silk. The sound, pure music to the ears. Matches up beautifully with my Winston.
You could also mention that it represents the history of speycasting and salmon fishing. It‘s just amazing that this reel (the Perfect or the Bougle) is basically THE SAME since ages. Just this is worth the price.
Hey Tim, once you get a Hardy you will never go back. Your story sounds very much like mine about 10 years ago, and that’s all I fish with now. I have an older version of that the same reel and use it on my 6wt Burky, and have landed many nice Steelhead on it. Enjoy!
Hello Tim. I always listen to your equipment advise, in one opportunity I was going to buy the orvis reel until I watched your review, so I didn't. You saved me from a headache. All the best.
I totally get it! Just dropped $900 on a pair of Ross Reels. I know they'll serve me well for decades to come and I'm supporting the fine folks at Ross. Will they help catch more fish? Probably not. But they're beautiful and dependable and a pleasure to use. Then again, I'm not married, so what do I know??
That’s a hard question to answer, what’s it do ? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to explain this and you know I’m not really getting any better at the answer . But i can tell you this I sure like that reel you have there :-)
Never told your wife the cost of your fishing equipment😂😂😂👍. You can never be disappointed on a old Hardy Reel. I have over 30 old Hardy Reels, from 1910-1975 I use them all. I love the sound of the Hardy Reels. The best is that they not have modern brakes who can get crashed. You gonna by more old Hardy Reels. You bye one, and you are obsessed with them. Welcome to the club😂😂😂😂😂👍
It will last you forever. I have a 3 and 3/8th Perfect on my sage 1 weight trout spey and also my sage 2 weight trout spey. You just can't beat the sound when you get grabbed.
Haha. Try to explain a woman buying expensive stuff anyway: Men are wired different I guess. We like our materials. Long ago, before I lost my business. I had only big brand name flyfishing stuff. Among it, also Hardy Reels. They only clicked, and compaired to for expample my Ross, Lamsons, Bauers etc the Hardy was just a clicker. With Rivets! But like the " Marquis #7 ...it was / is a thing of beauty. Also is screemed British heritage etc. And proven to outlast you. That is a really beautiful spey reel. I will have one ,one day also!
Hi Tim that's good value it last a lifetime or more! I have the perfect who is similar reel. I also have old young & son 1535 and 1540 And Daiwa 812 and 813 who are made by Young & son. They look like crap on the outside now as they been used for over 40 years on rivers whit big and sharp boulders as we have here in Sweden. They run as new and they has the same clicker system as Hardy. So good reels are in long run worth the money! That's a good size reel. Are you having OPST Laser line or Berkley big game solar on that ? Hope you get a runner soon so you can wake up the Wally 😂 Best regards the swed 🇸🇪
@@davidgoonpan4286 I don't I use Loop who made by Danielsson but for some rods you got to have a more heavy reel to balance out ! I even use Vision Tank5 who is a beast ! And modern reels suck when come to full lines DT or longbelly then you have very little place for backing. I need minimum 200yds often I have 300yds of 80LBS braided line I have quit use dacron. On my biggest salmon reels I'm use 70LBS big game as shootingline. Best regards from Sweden
Tim, your decision to buy that reel has been officially reviewed by the committee. The verdict came back today: TOTALLY JUSTIFIED. You might want to show this to your wife. Be gracious as she apologizes, this is no time to rub it in. THANKS for keeping the economy going! LOL
A cheap car drives down the road and has a trunk to put things in, an expensive car does the same, but they are worlds apart aren’t they? And we all know it. Also we don’t live for ever, enjoy your fishing, all the best from the U.K.
Rather than go Smokin, Drinkin and Gamblin I go fishin, and spend my money on that. Hell I've known women with 200 pairs of shoes ffs. Tight lines 🏴
Take up golf and you will have some perspective on how cheap that reel is! Stupid new golf driver that frankly are not significantly any better than cheaper ones are more, money than a used Hardy. I think I just talked myself into buying one.

Beautiful reel!
You can’t beat the sound of a Hardy clicker.
Love the videos!
Cheers from Atlantic Canada
I have fished with hardy reels since the 1970s never let me down, even on big Atlantic salmon in Norway.
Best description of what is cool about a Hardy reel I've heard yet. Nice!

Love those clickers man! Thanks 🙏
My wife : why do you need 12 reels?
Me : I have 14
Well played! 🤣

Hardy reels, like the Bougle, are an investment, developing a wonderful patina as they age through use.
Thanks buddy. I definitely plan on growing old with it!
Caught my eye too! Nice looking reel for sure. Enjoy your reel bud
Thanks!
You could also mention that it represents the history of speycasting and salmon fishing.

Congrats Tim! My wife would have the same reaction. Hahahah, great reel.
Love you man
I bought an Islander fly reel for my birthday. Wife was not impressed 😬 …but what a reel!

They just released a 3 1/2 inch version of this reel. Might it will suit a trout spey even better.
Definitely sounds like a winner!
Hello Tim. I always listen to your equipment advise, in one opportunity I was going to buy the orvis reel until I watched your review, so I didn't. You saved me from a headache. All the best.
Thanks buddy, That means a lot!
Good luck with the Hardy Tim i love the sound of it and own 2 Marquis😀
Good on ya! Hope Alaska treated you well!
I personally don’t loud klick and pawls. But if I did the Bougle would be the one. Love the way that reel looks. Nice job.
Thanks Andrew!
I added a heavier check springs to my Olympic Bougle. The stock spring is kind of weak. You can order them from Hardy USA.
Hey thanks Peter! Great to know. I backed my knob all the way out to get it where I needed it. I wii look into that.

Hi Tim. Are you still positive on the Maxcatch Classic Click or is that one you've had trouble with since your review?
Still pretty positive on the Maxcatch. The Orvis Battenkill V fell apart on me.
What rod would you recommend?
What rivers and fish would you use it for?
I’m forwarding this video to my wife
I hope it helps your cause buddy!
What does it do. It makes you happy thats enough😂
It looks a bit heavy for fly fishing but if you like it have fun then, lol
I agree with every words you said
Thanks 🙏
I’m laughing. He said clicky
It's a Hardy Reel that's enough. Someone will still be using that reel in 200 yrs when we are all fishing somewhere else.

Anywhere from a 12’9 #6 up to a 13’7 8/9 Guideline Lecie
