I've had toyotas for a long time, and our R1S is supposed to arrive any day now😀 I'll keep my built 4runner for the gnarly trails though!
I’ve taken my R1S on Broken Arrow trail in AZ and some rally gnarly trail near Red Rock Nevada. Unless your 4 runner was built up to Moster truck status, I feel confident saying the Rivian will go anywhere you 4Runner will. Of course I was a little more nervous about possible damage, but I took it slow and came out without a scratch.
A better comparison would be R1S vs 2024 Sequoia (both are 3 row SUV). I considered one out of two in July of this year. Picked up '24 Sequoia for $6k more compared to R1S (Rivian was used with 6k miles, Sequoia was brand new). Coming from 3 Tesla's (S, Y Performance, and refreshed X), Rivian R1T, and the Cybertruck, sold them in the last 2 years.

I see several commenters about Rivian depreciating quickly. I suspect many owners like myself are leasing this vehicle, which made it affordable. Honestly, I would not want to drive this vehicle outside of warranty.
We had the opportunity to test drive a quad motor R1S this past week. It was a lot of fun to experience luxury and tech in a vehicle. Next week we are testing out a Polestar. Thank you for the comparison.

Toyota did a great job with the new LC. People lament the move to 4 cyl but a V8 LC struggles to get 13 mpg and has quite a lot less hp and 140 ft lbs less torque. Coming from a Model Y, I really struggle with enjoying ICE vehicles...the noise and vibration from the powertrain, waiting for the transmission and engine to get into power band when it's needed, it all just feels so janky compared to electric. That said, if I were to buy ICE, I think the LC would be my choice.
Y is totally different from LC. I have MYP but if I did any off roading, I would prefer LC or better yet the GX550. I like R1S but it is lot more expensive. So I am thinking picking an old GX470.
I own a 2021 Land Cruiser with the V8. I average 17 mpg and regularly get 20-22 mpg in the highway.
Love the new LC, but the old V8 gets better mileage than reported and it’s virtually bulletproof.

The Y has no noise reductions so you should be used to it.

Tesla needs to build a proper people mover like the R1S and upcoming Gravity. Model X is too expensive for the size, not to mention gimmicky and unreliable. Long wheelbase Model Y with Highland upgrades would be a helluva product.

This is exactly my choice - Rivian vs Toyota LC. Rivian is more expensive, but given that LC uses premium gas and the gas mileage might pretty bad, the cost of gas alone can compensate for the price difference with Rivian. However, I'd like something that would last at least 15 years, which is what Toyotas are known for. However, modern Toyotas with hybrid and other complex tech might not be as reliable as they used to be
Rivian also has a 175,000 mile warranty on the battery
To be fair, gas vehicles can come with more tech than electric vehicles. For instance, the Toyota Corolla and rav4 have a gauge cluster, along with an infotainment screen, while the Model 3 and Y do not. Yes, it may not be fully digital, but at least they didn't eliminate it from a possibility. That is a weird cost- cutting decision for the lower than S and X options.
Tesla needs to build Land Cruiser like SUV. I think it would be a hot seller. None of Tesla models (except CyberTruck) have acceptable ground clearance for something to be driven with confident everywhere.
There is absolutely ZERO way you’re getting similar mileage between the GX and the LC.

At close to the same price the choice is easy, Rivian hands down.
Test drove a R1S - it’s a very nice SUV.
It's really not a similar price. A nicely equipped R1S is $90k+
Otherwise, it's the crappy base version with the smallest battery pack and it's still going to cost more than the Toyota in the video.

Base model is still fast at 4.5 0 - 60 and with decent range.
@@MondernMan Base model is junk. Small battery, two motors, no thanks. They took standard features out (no more air compressor, that's an option now), dynamic glass roof also an option. And even a base model with zero options is still a lot more expensive than the Toyota in this video.
@@Japplesnap Those features don't fundamentally change the Rivian, the drive does and that's really what you're paying with higher end models. Saying 'junk' is hyperbole.
The Toyota tested is ~10% less than the base Rivian so not too far off.

The Rivian is amazing, but it's too heavy off-road and video after video shows it struggling on challenging terrain. Despite quad motors on some models, it really needs some sort of locker. It just can't get traction to the wheels that have grip. Also, the air suspension is limited for articulation. My guess is this will all improve over time, though. Package wise, the RIS is nearly perfect, and it has the split tailgate the Land Cruisers should have had.

To expensive I agree but everyone I have talked to about their X say they wish they got the Y. I have driven the X it’s super nice but outdated compared to the rest of the Tesla fleet. I wish Tesla would make something much bigger than the X. I’m not a big fan of the falcon wings. I think 🤔 I may settled for the cyber truck till Tesla makes something much bigger inside.
I’ve owned 4 model Y’s and driven all even the cyber truck. The Y and Cyber truck are my fav so far. I like being higher of the ground. Just would like Tesla to make something like a ford Tahoe size or even ford expedition size.

The LC back seat looks cramped for a vehicle that size. I went with a f150 lightning best decision. Got an r2 on preorder to replace the Chevy Bolt in the future.
The 2024 land cruiser actually has over the air updates as well.
As much as i want to like rivian and how good it looks in face value, I still cant get over the reliability part of it. At least toyota is consistently one of the top most reliable car companies there is. And you cant put a price on safety and reliability. Its just a better and more responsible purchase.
Good timing. I am in the process of cross shopping these and the GX550. As an original reservation holder I have to decide by the end of September on the Rivian or lose the original pricing. Coming from a 2010 Sequoia and more recently BZ4X LTD AWD. I like the LC and GX 550 but I think I'm going with the Rivian.
Have you had a chance to test out the new Apple Music update to Rivian? A lot of people claim there has been a significant audio quality improvement, had you noticed anything?
I have not tested it and I probably won't. I just don't care enough. The quality on Spotify is fine

Just to set the record straight I'm a fan I enjoy watching your videos but I have to make a comment here I know you referred to it in the video in the beginning yes this is a ridiculous comparison it's comparing apples and pears I don't know but you have to explain to me the correlation!? The rivian is a ridiculously priced vehicle because it doesn't sell much so the numbers are low so the unit cost is higher yes I understand that you know you can go up to half a million per unit and offer like a space shuttle style options it doesn't matter it's stupid! Toyota is a old has been system that's getting replaced it pollutes is it requires maintenance which all of those things are bad for your pocketbook it doesn't matter if you have the money you contributing to pollution and you getting nothing for it except getting around you can buy a used Tesla SUV for example and save tons of money you don't have to go rivian as you know!
