I was just reading the other day, comments of my countrymen under an article of the Indian PM firing an Indian minister for being accused he can't handle masses of antisemitic protestors in the streets and for pointing out his police is backing off on the grounds of "being outnumbered". It was amusing to see them laugh at once a proud nation sink so low.
He’d be cheering that he’d fought against people like you.
Having Sunak as prime minister is not a good for England just as having Obama was not good for America. You never know the kind of leader who would come after Sunak but in the US we have what happened in response to Obama presidency. Trump was not supposed to be a leader of any civilized society but the Obama factor was exploited to stir the emotions of those who believe they own America...there is a possibility trump might sneak again in the WH.

Well done, Ross - we deify flawed men far too often.
Ross Grier is correct.
Ross is 24 here in a situation where he's in the completely alien environment of a tv studio in Glasgow at 630am having got up at 4 to get there up against 3 seasoned professionals in their 40's/50's who are completely in their element on home turf and do this every day of the week and have done for decades.
He can't even see them so he's relying on an ear piece with 3 different voices, mostly just offering sneering ad hominems.
And he absolutely wiped the floor with them.
Piers flapping about unable to even read the quote properly that his research team have given him and very bizarrely talking about a language rather than a place over and over again ( ie Bengali) before apparently not understanding what ahistorical means. ( As if Ross would have been saying "wildly historical" - its nonsensical and not even English)
Honestly it was an embarrassment. And rent a historian guy fared little better than Susanna and Piers as he also seemed very heavy on personal insults and short on facts.
The fact that Ross in such a hostile unfamiliar environment on national live television at silly o'clock in the morning was able to calmly pull out dates and long quotes or diary passages from memory was really impressive.
Piers last line to a guest they've invited on their program was childish and actually pretty shameful to be honest.
And one other thing - together with everything else he got wrong - was his central point of "this creep ing rewriting of history to besmirch a national hero" It's literally the exact opposite. At the time Churchill was in politics the public had a much less one dimensional view of the man as an unimpeachable hero. They voted him out as Ross said and his own cabinet never mind the labour opposition weren't slow to list all his 'mistakes' in no uncertain terms.
Irs actually in the intervening time period he's increasingly been deified as this great British man amongst men who singlehandedly beat the Nazis. The revisionist history is that nonsense thats happened over 70 years, Ross is actually pushing back with what his colleagues and the public thought of him at the time.
The Americans saved Britain. If it weren’t for the USA, Britain would be speaking German right now.

Totally agreed with the guy who has facts against Churchill. I mean, I can't judge Churchill for what he's done, but he's done lots of bad decisions as well. Putting him in the top tier list as the best Brit ever is not gonna be that pretty.
Not really. each 'fact' this kid mentioned were only half of the story. Like just saying 'Terror bombings of Dresden' or 'The Bengal famine' without context of why. They were tough decisions that needed to be made to win the war. Acting like Churchill wanted to kill of part of his own empire just to be 'evil' is stupid and untrue. The Nazis were sinking every cargo ship carrying food and supplies, the Japanese were expanding their empire across all of eastern Asia and the Pacific etc. The Terror Bombings of Dresden were horrible but essential for stopping the Nazi's from supplying their eastern forces against the Soviets and they hoped it would convince Hitler to surrender but unfortunately the Germans had a powerful propaganda minister that spun the story in their favour. There's a lot more to each of these issues but i'm just using these as an example that you can't just say someone is bad without looking at the bigger picture.

Churchill was and is cited as emblematic of "Great Britain" by the everyone from BNP, UKIP, Reform, Reclaim, and the increasingly extreme Tories. They have their own dark reasons for that - and perhaps Churchill would agree with much of it.
Putting anyone on a pedestal to the point where legitimate criticism is met with such bile from the likes of Morgan and his friends in the right-wing press.
Churchill was an effective leader in WW2, but he was also all the things Ross Greer said here. And it is worth saying rather than the panglossian hero worship we are routinely fed by our "patriotic" press.

@mauricebuckmaster9368 It's not a lie though. During the Tonypandy Riots, Churchill sent the Lancashire Fusiliers and 18th Royal Hussars into South Wales. He expressed his regret for it later in his career.
In 1937, 3 years before he became PM, he said
"I do not admit that a wrong has been done to these people by the fact that a stronger race, a higher-grade race, a more worldly wise race to put it that way, has come in and taken their place."
If that's not racist, then I don't know what racism means.

Imo she clearly couldn't get a word in edgeways. And she's right in what she's saying it's not about individual people, it's about raising awareness about the need for governmental changes.
The Scottish MSP was actually spot on-he said nothing false or otherwise inaccurate. They brought him on the show to find out why he thought Churchill was bad, yet acted surprised when he didn’t list out all of Churchill’s positives? And of course Piers resorted to personal insults when he realised he was losing the argument.
Pray tell hiw you would have handled the war, how you would have handled the decision to feed your troops to keep them healthy enough to fight, or regular people.
Pray tell what you're actually basing your opinion on, because it sure as hell isn't facts.
Go and look at the Nazi government's documentation at what they had planned for the world, not just Europe, the entire world.
Churchill is the reason there are still Bengalis, Africans, any ethnic minority, lesbians and gays and the disbaled, are still around today. Without him the Nazis would have absolutely won the war, are you racist or something? Homophobic? Lastly why is it Mandela's past isn't factored into the view of him, he was a terrorist, an honest to god terrorist, by the standards put on Churchill Mandela was too a bad man. As was Ghandi, he was deeply racist....yes people who are not white can be racist! Who'd have thought it! Why isn't that factored into views of him? He's seen as some sort of saint, because the good he did outweighed the bad. The same applies to Churchill. He's the reason you have the right to air such an ignorant opinion, was he perfect? Absolutely not, perfection does not exist, every single one of us is a complex mess of a human being, that being said some human beings go on to do extraordinary things, like Churchill, Mandela and Ghandi, all three are deeoly flawed, but those flaws are heavily outwieghed but the good they eventually did.
Pray tell hiw you would have handled the war, how you would have handled the Nazis, how you would have handled the difficult choices like feeding the troops or feeding regular people, or choosing NOT to evacuat areas that were going to be bombed by air raids because doing so would have told the Nazis the enigma messages had been cracked...or have you ignored that bit of factual history? That Churchill had to let British people die, because he could not give the game away and let the Nazis know we had access to their secret messages?
What would you jave done with that information? You'd likely have given the game away and lost the war, leaving every single one of us alive today under Nazi rule.
It's far too simplistic to think Churchill was bad, he had views that were part and parcel of the era he lived, he still however lead the fight against the most evil power the world has seen this far. He had to bite his tongue and allie with Stalin, a man he hated with every fibre of his body, because without them we'd have lost the war.
You sit and judge when you clearly have no idea of the mega decisions that had to be made, that resulted in death no matter what, the only choice to be had was how many died and over what time period.
If we'd have lost the war we would be able to have this conversation, hell I'd have been killed by now because I'm a lesbian and I'm also disabled. Churchill is the reason so many people are alive today and the reason you can aur such a stupid ignorant opinion.

Indeed, they even contemplated using mustard gas too, though supplies proved unavailable". Anthony Clayton wrote in The Oxford History of the British Empire that "the use of poisonous gas was never sanctioned

Well, he was certainly a white supremacist, but most people of that generation were: it was inculcated in British children at school in those days. 'You have won life's first prize in being born British' was said to my dad in the 1930s....
Things which get done in wars are always going to inspire revulsion - none of us have had war on our doorsteps in our lifetimes, so we're not the best judges of what he should or should not have done. But bombing Dresden in 1945 certainly wasn't his finest hour.....an act entirely akin to Israelis bombing Gaza to a pulp....

I am an eighty year old English man and I have been in the merchant navy and the Royal Air Force so I have met a lot of Scots. Most of those were great lads, a lot of banter between English and Scots that usualy ended in laughter. The tnuc appearing here is a typical barrack room lawyer.
