With the money from my FIRST paycheck, I ran into town and bought the little box record player that I had put on Lay-Away. I think I paid $25 or less for it. I still had enough money to buy a Rex Allen album. The next payday I bought Gene Autry. By the end of the year I had a nice collection of my favorite cowboy singers, which included Roy Rogers and Marty Robbins. I did manage to save money... after that first adventure shopping, and managed to pay for my college tuition. But during free time, late at night, I imagined that I lay somewhere out on the Plains, looking up at the starry sky while my cowboy hero sang me haunting lullabies. LOL And the next morning I'd wake refreshed and ready to face the boring modern days of the late Sixties. smh Yeah. While our little Southern backwoods small town was slowly being introduced to drugs and the strange folk that came with them, I survived with heroes from the past. And now, when my doctor tells me I need pills for High BP, high sugar, cholesterol, etc, BEFORE they got out of hand, I tell him that I survived more than fifty years without the pills. I'm a healthy 73, and expect to follow the women in my family into my 90s. Yeah. Roy, Gene, and Rex are still keeping me going. My daughter is raising long horn cattle, goats, sheep and rabbits. Her boys are raising ponies, chickens, and rabbits. And, yes, they listen to my medicine, too.

I used to live in your dads house! Absolutely incredible I was so lucky and fortunate to live on that piece of history. There are pictures online of the ranch we remodeled it, so stunning. My brother and I were young at the time we lived there we would listen to all of Rex Allen’s songs and cds in the great room and listen to it on the way to school and the way back. I’m positive I know every song by heart now, I miss it SO much. Please contact me I’d love to know more about the ranch and land if you have any information it was called rancho sacatal.
