      I live in Britain and (hopefully you know) we had the EU vote a few months ago. The voting started at 7am. I missed the bus to college (high school!), but seeing as I only had one lesson and knew my teacher wasn't going to be in anyway, I just thought "sod it" and walked home. I realised I now had the time to vote so when I got home I gathered up my stuff and went out to the hall set aside for the vote... When I walked in there, there were two women behind the table collecting peoples info etc. and they just had this look on their faces like "I do not want to be here. I want to be in bed. Why did I volunteer for this. Goddammit."
      I felt very sorry for them. Then went home and went to bed again.

    I've watched this episode so many time - but I literally only just realised that Josh's scream at the end was answering the guys question. I don't know why but I always thought it was like a release of pressure, happy that they had got to election day and that they were going to win. It's odd how you can misconstrue something like that.

      See, you should have put a period after "scene" and left it at that. Because this isn't real. It's a fictional drama. And Aaron Sorkin has said repeatedly he doesn't care about realism. If he has to make a choice between being entertaining or being real, he will always choose being entertaining. So stop trying to apply reality because it doesn't apply.

    I cannot remember; was this before or after the prank everyone pulled on Toby where they said there was no way Toby wouldn’t praise the president before the debates when he wasn’t sharp and on point and needing to go “back to camp.”?
    If it is after it shows how Toby gets the last laugh with a troop of actors or how (if before) Josh and the crew really gave it to Toby for pulling this stunt first.
    My guess? This was retribution, that a bunch of seemingly ignorant voters, one after another, strikes fear into Josh.

    seriously though, ballots should be simpler. If we didn't have the butterfly ballots in 2000, florida wouldnt have caused so much confusion. Whose bright idea was that anyway? And I'm all for multiple parties, but I really think the same person shouldn't be the nominee for more than one party.
    1:58 also ranked choice voting needs to be a thing. But if it isn't, don't vote like it is.

    • @rileycorrigan5593
      @rileycorrigan5593 3 года назад +2

      The Butterfly Ballot was a "solution" to the high number of candidates on the ballot. In order to include both name and party, the ballot was redesigned. Of course, any person with eyeballs can tell you that the solution was needlessly complicated, but in reality it wasn't *that* hard. Many people did vote correctly. Some people just get confused easily in these types of circumstances. A later mock up demonstrated that by rearranging the presentation of name and party, the ballot could keep the original, simpler format.
      Also yeah first past the post sucks.

      To the contrary there were plenty of episodes that called into question the morality of their cause. Check out “The woman of Qumar” where CJ raises hell over us selling weapons to nations that abuse women. Or “Han” where a North Korean tries to defect and is denied for political reasons. Many of these episodes do a good job of presenting arguments of both sides and sometimes I didn’t agree with the administration and their view. Leo leaves Bartlett due to his reluctance to strike back at Palestinians that attacked an American convoy. I disagreed strongly with Bartlett and disliked his refusal to use force when needed, all hall marks of democratic politics. Give it another look.

    • @kereminde
      @kereminde 4 года назад +2

      @@SonOfGod3000 There was an episode in the very first season about a gun control bill where someone "jumped the fence"l. And took Josh to task over it for almost a minute, basically telling him to his face "you compromised too much to get this to pass, it's not solving what you want it to solve, and that's why I'm now against this bill".
      While these were the protagonists, and the center of the show's focus, I never really mistook them as being entirely "in the right". They were often making decisions with the best intentions, yet knew there was compromises and flaws which they had to hurtle past in order to avoid getting paralyzed over trying to make a "perfect" decision when they simply needed to make *the* decision.
      And at the same time, those opposed to them sometimes are simply trying to do the best thing as they see it. Though it's easy enough to see common threads of politicians simply playing politics as though it's a game to sit at the table as long as they can. (Again, the same episode I mentioned had a Congressman 'on their side' threaten to switch their vote unless they "sat at the cool kids' table" as Josh put it.)
      ... then there's the somewhat minor point of how President Bartlett is still a somewhat insufferable 'genius' and loves inflicting himself on people because he can. While still being a caring, supportive person when it's needed. He's flawed, in many ways, some of them major to his character... Kind of interesting to think of.
