    Hi thnx for your excellent videos. It helped me getting back my DS1515+ to life again. The only issue that hasn’t been solved yet is the LAN , during booting the LAN activity leds stay dark also there is no activity leds on the actual RJ45 ports as well. When plugged in to a functional network. Any suggestions would be great :)

      The lanport itself could be bad and need replacement, or the ethernet IC could be bad and need replacement.

    I am so pleased that you did this repair, my DS1513+ has exactly this problem. Interesting that you didn't back-up the data on the chip? Is swapping out the chip usually enough? No need to flash the chip with the firmware from the old chip? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  6 месяцев назад +1

      No need to flash that chip that I am aware of. That chip should not be the one holding information, the Nand chip on the other side of the board and the eeprom on the motherboard I believe are the ones with the user data you would want to flash.

    Hello Nick and thank you for all of your effort. I just got a old, faulty DS1010+ (which is very similar to DS1511+) with blue blinking LED. I checked this mini board and it has a mini USB port. Connecting it to a linux computer i am able to see 2 partitions which i can imagine are used for booting. So in my case i think it's not the USB controller causing the issue. Coin battery replaced, PSU is healthy. Do you may have any other tip for my case?

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  2 месяца назад

      Copy the files from it onto your computer. What speed is it able to copy at? When that board fails it only allows data to be read from it very slowly which is why the unit can't boot. I haven't done a video on it showing this but will soon. If it is able to copy quickly then it's not the fault but if it's very slow to copy then it's most likely the fault.
      Also what is the part number of the chip on the back of your daughter board? If it's the same exact chip as we replace in the video then most likely it's the fault. If it's a different type of chip then most likely you are correct that's not the fault.

    • @MariosChatzipavlis
      @MariosChatzipavlis 2 месяца назад

      @@NicksElectronicRepair thank you for the quick reply and your time. Although the files size is small (8.4 MB) the transfer is completed after 1s so i guess i need to focus elsewhere. For reference part number is UT165-T48 N4GPR0 which is not exactly the same as the one in the video. I am focusing on possible corrupted BIOS, any other tip is welcome. If i were in the US i would have send it to you, your pricing is very reasonable, but i stay in Europe.

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  2 месяца назад

      Yeah if it is copying in 1 second then that's not the issue. As you said it's possible it's a bios issue, could be a fault on a hardware level or software level but it could also be a Memory issue, have you tried new RAM?

    • @MariosChatzipavlis
      @MariosChatzipavlis 2 месяца назад

      @@NicksElectronicRepair Thank you for the tips. I also tried other RAM but the issue remains. The model is old the best i could do was to find the BIOS file from 1511 which seems to be very similar. Although i was able to extract the bin file from current chip i wasn't able to recreate it with the 1511 BIOS. I would appreciate it if you by any change have a bin copy of the DS1010+.
      One more think that i noticed which could indicate other issue to you with all your experience. When the NAS is booting to restarts after around 5 seconds and then it boots into the infinate blue blinking LED light.

    Hey Nick,
    I like your videos thank you for such detailed info.
    Maybe you can help me out.
    I shut down my disk station DS1315+ for about 30nminutes.
    It's since been blinking and not initializing the disks.
    The fans are spinning. I have a light notification for the lan. I took out the mobo to replace the CMOS battery, which I will do today after work, but I don't think that's the issue even though the old battery is dead.
    Anything you can suggest for me to try?

      Do you mean DS1513+ for the model of your unit? if so then most likely you have the exact same fault as the unit we fix in this video.
      It does require advanced soldering skills to repair this unit. If you don't have the tools or experience for this repair we do offer a mail-in repair service. Here is the link to our repair below:

    Does this happen to DS1812+ as well? I shut mine down for a scheduled power cut, but when I turned it back on I got a flashing blue light which went on for over an hour. I tried pulling power and restarting it, but now there's no blue light however the LAN light is blinking and the fans spin. It is not visible on the network.

      Im buying them from a supplier in China. It usually costs about $35-$40 to ship so unless you are buying a bunch of stuff the cost of shipping alone makes it pricey. You can get cheaper shipping but then you go from 1-2 weeks shipping turnaround time to a month or more.
      I have about 10 of those chips, if you want I can put it for sale on my website. I would charge $19.95 + ground advantage.
      You can get them for cheaper if you want, there are some sellers on eBay for them, but again they are all going to be Chinese sellers. So if you don't mind the wait time it would make more sense financially for you to buy them from eBay.

    I've got a Synology DS718+ which after moving house is not booting up, and the power LED is constantly flashing blue, and there is no activity on the Ethernet port. The unit was just unplugged from the power rather than being shut down by pressing the power switch (not by me) and when I went to reconnect and power the unit back up again the only thing that happened was the fan came on at a low speed and the power LED flashes blue. The unit is just 3 years old and was working flawlessly before being relocated. It has not been subjected to significant vibration of shock. Any ideas how I can restore this unit? Does the 718+ have a CMOS backup battery that might need replacing? If so I'm quite capable of doing that - I work in electronics and RF communications.

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  2 месяца назад

      Well, I will start by saying the following. Unplugging it without properly shutting it down is most certainly not the cause of the issue. The move from one location to another is also most likely not the issue unless you forgot to mention that you dropped it during the move.
      This failure was most likely present weeks or months prior, you just didn't know about it because your unit has been on during that entire time. Had you decided to power it down properly, not move the unit, and reboot it the same fault most likely would have occurred.
      You can try replacing the CMOS but based on what you are describing this won't resolve your issue.
      There could be a hardware fault or a software fault. I wouldn't be able to help you further however without having you send in the unit for diagnostics. I haven't had to work on the DS718+ so I don't know all the common failures with it, and thus would require the full unit to be sent in for repair in order to be able to diagnose it and troubleshoot it properly.

      @timmoore60 2 месяца назад

      @@NicksElectronicRepair OK, the DS718+ uses the same/similar daughter board but it uses the PS2251-68-5 flash controller, I have high resolution pictures of both sides. No, unfortunately, replacing the CMOS battery did not resolve the blue flashing power LED and failure to boot problem. It sounds as though failures like this are fairly common on Synology NAS boxes. I don’t know if the board is available as a spare part or if flash controller IC you describe in your videos is interchangeable with the PS2251-68 or not, I’d have to study the datasheets for comparison. The device you describe is available on Ebay, but whether they are fake knockoffs or not is another story… feel free to PM if you’d like to discuss this one further with me.

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  2 месяца назад

      I would be interested in getting the part number off the IC chip at location ID U1 on the back of that daughter board.
      "The device you describe is available on eBay"
      I don't think I spoke of a device. What are you referring to?

    • @timmoore60
      @timmoore60 Месяц назад

      @@NicksElectronicRepair The part I was referring to (at that time) was the U1 IC. On the DS718+ (which I believe is very similar to the DS716+), the U1 IC is a PS2251-68-5. Anyway, my DS718+ is on it's way to your service centre at the moment, feel free to produce a video on that when it arrives. I did attempt to resolder the U1, however I quickly found that my equipment is not up to devices with pin spacing that close, so I quickly stopped there. The CMOS battery has been replaced on my unit but still no boot.

    I have a DS3611xs which has a similar daughter board except that it also has a miniUSB port as well. If I remove the board I can access the flash drive on this card so presumably the flash controller is OK. In that case the BIOS firmware EEPROM is the culprit. Is my thinking correct? Although not labeled as such I found a MX25L3206E which would be typical for a EEPROM.

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  4 месяца назад

      Sorry I have never worked on a DS3611XS before I couldn't tell you what commonly fails on it and what you would want to do to fix it. Tricks to repair one unit can sometimes carry over to others but most often each model is unique and repairs for one won't be the same as repairs for another. So I wouldn't plan on having the repair done in this video work for your unit.

    Hi, maybe you should help me with my faulty disk stations from synology.
    DS1513+: No signs of life, no LEDs, anything. - I checked the power supply (works), changed the battery and then found out blown capacitor C366. I don't know the exact capacity of this one and cannot measure it. Do you know where I can get this information?
    DS218: This one has the same blinking issue as the one you just repaired. Tried it with and without disks, tried to change CMOS battery, had it running all night long. Nothing seems to help. I would like to swap the EEPROM chip with new one with bios extracted from the .pat file. Do you have any other recommendation, what might be causing this issue?

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  6 месяцев назад

      Really sorry I don't think I can help you on this one. I don't have a DS1513+ unit and I very rarely get those in for repair so I don't know what the correct capacitor value would be for that C366. I would need you to send in your unit to be able to identify it. Nowhere will you be able to get this information. You would need to find a capacitor in parallel, remove it from circuit, and using special tools identify what capacitance it is, and the voltage rating.
      I can do this for you but I would have to have you send in the unit and of course, would need to charge the repair fee. Also, it is likely there is more to it than just the cap. Often capacitors blow up because something else is shorted in the circuit. It's very rare to see them just blow up on their own for no reason.
      As for the DS218, there are a few reasons for this to be happening. It could be the EEPROM, could be your RAM, could be a shorted IC. I am sorry but there are a lot of reasons for these issues to occur. It's not always a one size fits all.
      Without having the units in front of me to diagnose and fix, I could speculate on a lot of things but wouldn't really be able to help much.

    Do you reckon the USB controller chip dies of age or is it usage related? I haven't booted my DS1512+ a whole lot of times in the last decade, should I expect this to go fail on me in the next year?

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  6 месяцев назад +1

      That is a good question and I don't know the answer for sure but I would assume it's usage. I know that for memory chips it is usually related to the amount of use it gets via read and write cycles rather than the age. I know other passive components like capacitors can go out simply because of age even if they have had 0 use and been sitting on a shelf.
      For this USB controller chip, I am just not familiar with it enough to know 100% and give you a for sure answer. What I do know for sure is that I have fixed over a dozen of these units by replacing that chip.

    It was implied in the comment from @bvmullem, but would this fix also work for a DS1515+? IT looks like the chip is a PHISON PS2251-68-5 UG1444C on the DS1515+

    • @NicksElectronicRepair
      @NicksElectronicRepair  2 месяца назад

      No this would not work with the DS1515+
      All NAS units are different, a fix for one unit does not mean it will work with other models.
      I recommend you watch this video instead as it's for the DS1515+
