- In this vlog I travel to the Isle of Wight to visit the UK's oldest theme park, Blackgang Chine. Founded by Alexander Dabell all the way back in 1843, this park has some incredible history as well as a stunning location.
Come with me as I take a look at some of the unique and, sometimes weird, walkthroughs and attractions, the museum and all of the themed areas. I also check out the newest ride at the park, Extinction, a Zamperla gyro swing complete with a full on ride POV.
Thank you to everyone for taking an interest in these videos and for liking, sharing and subscribing to this content on the AdventurePlanet© channel, it really is incredibly appreciated.

My grandparents lived in the cottages that are now used as Chine storage. As a child my family and I used to spend most of our summer holidays there, used to sneak into the chine for free...this was the 70s, loved it there, and some of my relatives still live in Blackgang...a childhood right out of an Enid Blyton book, me and my Grandparent's dog tiny off on our adventures, checking out semi-demolished houses due to landslides...loved it, and loved the chine
It’s a fascinating place with a lot of interesting history for sure. I always enjoy my visits to Blackgang. Thanks for sharing Matthew and have a great Christmas!
This is amazing, you should write short stories about your adventures, Enid Blyton style!
@gunstarheroine5173 hahaha, when my kids get to adulthood, and if my memory still works, I might just do that thank you.
I also lived at Blackgang in the 70s in what was the st Catherine's hotel which I believe is now the museum. I remember the cottages. Such lovely memories. I spent lot's of time in the Chine. Also used to play at Five rocks with Alex Bruce and Penny dabell. Very special memories.
And that’s my brother poking his head out of the castle 😅
Love blackgang its so random and fun :)
Nooo the donkey in the mirror on the part that says ‘reveals the real you’ in rumpus mansion is the best part! Sad it wasn’t working on the day you went :(
Seems not many of the animatronics in the park were working.
Noo you walked away from the last scene in the mansion, the scary part at the end the sea women changed all creepy into a sea witch lobster thing haha
Really hoping they get the animatronics back working - I did feel like it was missing something special on that day! It was really quiet as well but I still had an amazing time!
I can't believe that they got rid of the roller coster for extinction 😢😢
Indeed - no rollercoasters there anymore sadly
Love it there the dodos are my favorite
Haha, the dodos were great!
Black gang chine is so much fun I have been there
It’s a park with a lot of charm for sure! I enjoy visiting every summer 😊 Thanks for watching
Thanks for this, I get such nostalgia as I always used to visit in the 90s as a kid, weird how much it’s changed. Consider me subscribed 🤪
Thanks so much Jack, glad you enjoyed. It has changed a lot since then, but still a great little park with tons of charm 😊
When you go on the T rex platform it usually vibrates.
The raptors originally had the raptor noise from Jurassic Park.
Vortex was the music factory
Ahh thank you!
Me and my family go to the Isle of Wight and we go here every time restricted area 5 is my favourite walkthrough.I give this park a 10/10.oh and extinction looks absolutely amazing
It’s a great park - I did feel like a lot of the animatronics weren’t working in RA5 which was a shame. Just means I’ll have to go back again at some point though 😄
oh and awesome vlog by the bay. sorry for my rant you have a new sub
Haha no worries. It was a bit of a shame to not see the animatronics working. Thanks for watching Mat, much appreciated!
You missed nursery land! Sad times 😂 you didn’t see Humpty dumpty?! Shocking haha!
I also missed the chimney walk! I used to love that but unfortunately, I was getting the boat back to the mainland that day so was pushed for time 😓
Great vlog about a really magical place. Shipwrecked is now up and running. Shame you didn't visit Nurseryland, which is the closest thing to Efteling's Fairytale Forest at Blackgang Chine. Also, next time you go in Rumpus Mansion, make sure you stay and wait for the twist on the last animatronic feature, which you cut away from just before the reveal. It's a scary grand finale. You should also visit Watermouth Castle and Sundown Adventureland, which are similar attractions.
Thanks for watching Nick! Unfortunately I couldn’t find a way through to Nurseryland, so I assumed it had been blocked off due to the work that was happening where Cliffhanger once stood.
I really wish I had visited other attractions, and I wanted to but unfortunately I was restricted on time for this visit. Will definitely visit again though!
@@_adventureplanet It was open but is very badly signed and very easy to miss. The access runs alongside the maze, down through the chimney pot walk. One day I am sure they will put a sign up!
Thanks for the info. Has Chimney Pot Walk been relocated at all? I remember seeing it last time I visited but couldn’t remember where it was. I thought it may have been removed as I know it was an old attraction. Sad that I missed it!
This is one of my fav places to go when I go on holiday! Where going back this year to!
Oh and at 11:10 the turtle Spins!
It’s a really quirky park - I love visiting! Look forward to going back again soon.
I hope you have a great time and thanks for watching.
@@_adventureplanet hello! I’m a big fan of your channel! Me to ☺️
Brilliant vlog mate
Thanks so much Keiran 👍🏻
I saw you! My mum and brother were in the church in cowboy town whilst you were there!
😆 I hope you had a great time!!
I went there earlier this year
Hope you enjoyed your day!
Another good place similar to this is Watermouth Castle in Devon. A few rides, mixed with walkthrough exhibits and even a nice indoor water show!
I’ve heard of Watermouth but I’ve never been. One for the list for sure! Thanks for the suggestion.
Hey, you're visiting quite a few parks lately, that's great to watch another video where I can visit the park! I hope to go to one of the parks in the uk one day, I would love that. By the way I am really excited to go back to Europa Park in September, I know you recently made the video but perhaps you'll be there too😄?
Also I wonder have you ever been to PortAventura World, it looks gorgeous!
Hey Lucille, thanks so much for watching! Hope you find the videos helpful 😊
I have visited PA before yes but have never vlogged it and I’m long overdue a visit, watch this space!
Hope you have a great time at Europa Park! It’s a beautiful park and I will be back at some point, but will probably wait until the opening of Voltron 😍
Yes definitely 😲😁
Sadly that was the only year I haven't been to Blackgang chine. It's cool to see what the cliffhanger area looks like now.
I was actually on the cliffhanger for it's last ride before it shut down
It’s a lovely little park, just a shame it has no coasters currently, but the history really carries it in my opinion. Thanks for watching 👍🏻
The vortex has actually been renamed 3 times it was originally the sailors return, it was then renamed to cask and weevil and then finally in 2018 it was renamed again to the vortex. The musical petshop was installed in 1992 and then rumpus mansion a year later in 1993. The captain jacks food outlet next to the petshop used to be a small gift shop until 2012
Thanks for the info Matt, and thanks for watching. Definitely a few changes since I last visited!
Oof nearly 50% of the stuff wasn't working or was closed. I love Blackgang Chine, been there since the 90s, but I really hope you had a discounted ticket that day or they reimbursed you part of the cost. It's pretty expensive to go to BC these days, and finding the majority of the animiatronics not working - including the really big draw attractions such as the T-Rex - is really not cool.
Hey Gunstar, thanks for watching! Yeah it was a bit of a shame but I did still have a good day overall 😊 It’s always nice to visit as I don’t come down too often.
We were there that day and are captured on the video. Yes, sadly some things were not working but when we returned a few days later the park was upto full speed thankfully.
They’re meant to be moving animatronics in the Pet shop but they randomly weren’t moving :(
I miss the old crooked house the new one is awful… :( they ruined it!
The underwater kingdom is so disappointing now as its so run down already after several years. Like the whole point was to find the crab babies yet they’re not really there anymore, I couldn’t find them last time i went! Going under the crawl space hurt my knee’s so bad! Haha! The eels look awful now so rundown! :( I see they added some new sea creature figures.
This was a great video I have not been there in a while so it was nice to see! :D
I miss the weather wizard and the Triassic club! :(
Yeah it was a shame - it was still a great day though! Thanks for watching Hypagemie 😊
@@_adventureplanet:) I’m still currently watching its at the rumpus mansion part! Haha! Yes its been fun! Thanks for the great video!
@@_adventureplanetdefinitely will be subscribing :D
Thanks Hypa, it’s much appreciated. I’m glad you enjoyed 😊
When I was last there I asked one of the park guys what they do with all the retired exhibits, he said they don't throw anything away, they have everything stored in a warehouse. It's possible they might recondition and bring some of them back. I also loved the Weather Wizard and Triassic club, so creative and charming, and a lot more interesting than what they replaced it with. The only good thing about the underwater kingdom is the lifesize whale.
Yeh all the dinosaurs in restricted area 5 are supposed to be animatronics and it usually has audio… why was everything turned off when you went :(
Yeah it was a shame really, especially the big t-Rex! Hopefully they’ll all be on next time!
Hi my family tree has Alexander dabell
I was interested in the "stardust" spaceships used on the disney film "unidentified flying oddball" which were supposed to be in this park? Are they not there anymore? Were they moved or destroyed?
Thanks for watching maddercat 😊
You’re right, they did used to have the shuttle here, but it was removed a long time ago - around 2011 time if I remember correctly.
I’m not sure whether it was moved somewhere else, or whether it was demolished entirely.
@@_adventureplanet Awe!! ok thanks for answering! Hmm I hope they werent demolished that sucks!
Awesome upload!! Here in the IOW currently so may plan a trip! In honest opinion is it worth it? It looks cool :)
Hey Sophia. I think it’s definitely worth it if you’re over there, especially if you can appreciate the historical aspect over big thrills. It’s a great little park with some quirky walkthroughs in a great location. Have a great time!
@@_adventureplanet thanks so much! Greatly appreciate!!
Will try my best to get there!
No worries! Let me know if you enjoy it if you go 😊
They had the only rollercoaster on the whole island, with amazing views and fun for all ages, and replaced it with that extreme thrillride that holds you upside down 60 feet in the air.
Muppets.
Blackgang is no longer worth going to, unless you like plastic dinosaurs or hanging upside down.
It is a shame it was removed. There is still a coaster at Pirates Cove though, albeit a very small one
@@_adventureplanet Yeh we saw that at Shanklin, that's literally for toddlers and barely worth a mention.
It's such a weird decision, it's like they're confused about what demographic they're targeting? BC is a very charming and unique park that has a kitschy and vintage aesthetic, the rollercoaster worked well because all ages from about 5/6 years could ride it. Most kids can't ride Extinction, it's too extreme, and real thrillheads aren't going to be visiting Blackgang Chine because it's not cutting edge enough. I'm just not sure who they're aiming it at tbh.
