It's changed so much in the last 50 years. I know you have to change with the times and also must accommodate the millions of pilgrims who come every year hence all the changes but I really love the old design of the haram shareef.
That is the delima for the Saudi government , with the increasing numbers of Muslims around the world and the strict space where the pilgramge performance to be accepted according the islamic teachings and the increasing demands of Muslims to attend the hajj especially with the present day easy access to travel , it is hard not to modernize the structures to fit these demands. Kaaba has been rebuilt many times. It is not the same exact structure as it was1400 years ago.

1 week ago I visited kaaba and I went to kabah by car all the way from wakra in qatar to Saudi and my friends I miss kabah a lot and this was my very first umrah at the age of 10 when I saw the kabah I felt emotional of like prophet Ibrahim SAW built the kabah and my friends one more thing when you arrive at the kabah when you go near it prophet Ibrahim SAW big footprints will be displayed in a glass

نفس الصورة التي في مشهد عام ٢٠٠٠ وهي توسعة الملك فهد الله يرحمه ويغفر له
وبدأت التوسعة في عهد الملك عبدالله الله يرحمه ويغفر له بشمال الحرم
والآن التوسعة الأكبر والاضخم
تمام ... انا استغربت من الصورة ... مع اني كنت في السعودية من عام 1980 وكان الحرم في التسعينات اوسع

I miss the old Mecca, especially in the 1970's to early 1990's where native Meccan allow pilgrim to sleep at their house.
Today, it's Grand Mosque encircled by 5 stars hotel.
It looks like it's changed the most just in my and probably most of our lifetimes! And a lot more change to come.
