The Confusing Northeast Corridor Song
HTML-код

- Did you know that Amtrak’s Northeast Regional and similar services used to be called many, many different names, depending on what time the train was leaving from, or what version of the route it was taking? Inspired more than a little by Jay Foreman, I decided to take a crack at listing just a few.
Special thanks to Alex Davis for constrictively critiquing my lyrics. If you would like a comprehensive history of every route in this song, let me know in the comments!

Classy Whale - at-least-weekly misadventures with trains and transit!
W song. Imagine if Google maps had all these documented and it would be a mess!
Oh god I can see it now....
OMG IT GOT PINNED
Kind of like when you click any station in the UK in Google Earth
If google maps had live elevation Florida’s elevation would gradually sink
You, Alex Davis, and Jay Foreman should start a band.
and Miles?
We need Jackson Betz. He's the one who knows how to make our songs not sound like a kindergarten performance recorded over the PA system.
The Transit Jammers
@@alexwithclipboard Make sure the logo is spelled with the NYC Subway symbols and you've got yourself an award-winning group!
Miles Taylor from Miles in Transit too!
"So what should we name the trains along this corridor?"
*"Yes"*
"Beacon (Of light and of hope) Hill"...I see what you did there 😉 It's absolutely crazy just how many names there were, especially putting it all into perspective with this song. Kudos to you for the dedication! And you, Miles, Jackson, and Alex Davis should all form a transit band group, because you all show that music and transit can very much go together.
Wait where does "beacon of light, beacon of hope" come from?
@@shreychaudhary4477 idk
I feel like the Northeast Regional should be the only name for any trains that run just between Boston and DC on the NEC, but stuff that continues on south of DC should get the old names (the Old Dominion, Tidewater, and Virginian), since it’s weird to have the *Northeast* Regional be the name of trains that run to cities that are firmly in the south like Richmond, Norfolk, and Roanoke.
That’s why it should be split into:
NY to Norfolk/Newport News/Roanoke
AND
Boston/Springfield (maybe Greenfield to increase coverage) to DC
Yeah, if Amtrak extends the Roanoke train to Bristol, VA/TN but brands it under the Northeast Regional name, might as well rebrand the Carolinian, Palmetto, Pennsylvanian and Keystone, as Northeast Regional too lol.
Oh wow, The Clocker! I had forgotten that name. Glad you made this gem of a train song.
Classy, I see a Grammy Award in your future!
Amazing song, especially the lyrics.
The " --- hill" bit was also great _and subtly inspired by Jay Foreman_.
After seeing your other video where you showed the behind-the-scenes, lucky you for getting an empty carriage. On a scale from "awkward" to "I'm about to get arrested I think", how was it?
If they make a service between DC and London (UK, not ON), they should name it Harrow-on-the-Beacon-Hill
great song. W hope you get to 10K
I hope so too!
National Railroad Passenger Corporation. I know it's weird. But that's the name.
Haha very Animaniacs-esque, especially with the extra info in addition to just the names!
Fingers crossed for a collab song with you, Miles, Jackson, and Alex Davis 🤞
very cute, Caleb. like it. Your pals, Jackson and MIles, do fun musical numbers too.
dang you beat me to the idea
I know, right .... Just call it train :)
You have so much to learn about American railroading sweetheart
This lyricism is incredibly impressive, god DAMN
I love everything about this. LOL I have spent a lot of time on NE Regional and this made me so happy!!!
Thanks for this creative song. I remember many of those old train names. I guess Amtrak just did not want to be bothered with individual train names. Now it’s just boring train numbers and common names for the service.
2:38
that scream
this is great
As CityNerd once said: "Fern K Hahn is correct. Thank you Fern!"
Got a Spotify yet?
Some of the routes here are pretty cool, New Haven to Boston via Springfield might be cool to have. Ditto for Harrisburg to Boston.
I've always liked the name Amtrak Cities Sprinter, wish they'd leaned into it more.
yes they need the bay state that took the route inland as caleb put it
One label for all the similar services makes sense. I just wish they’d bring back the Clockers as a lower-tier service, because current options for going to Philly from NY or NJ aren’t great. Either too expensive (Regionals if you don’t book months in advance) or way too slow (NJT+SEPTA since their schedules aren’t coordinated anymore).
watching this waiting for honaj to pull up on the NEC
Very creative your song.... Cool!
It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for
Nice ukulele work. Good idea, song, and singing.
I was once near DC and saw a passenger train running at high speed with the locomotive on the back, pushing all the carriages ahead of it. It looked scary af. I want to know the name of that one.
baller
I’m hoping for that New Portal Bridge and Tunnel. Keep Up The Spectacular Work With The Videos Classy Whale
This should a be a spotify song. its a banger!
A song about a train played with a ukulele... Where have I seen this before?
I like the ukulele at the end idk why just peaceful
That’s nice video I like the song
That was awesome, Caleb.
I think having names/ nicknames for trains is great and gives them some personality. But I don’t think using names as the way to identify a certain train at a station is the best way.
Here in Germany they found a pretty decent way to handle this in my opinion. Many regional trains have names, often historic origin and usually referring to the area they pass through. The Schwarzwaldbahn (Black Forest Railway), Werdenfelsbahn (Werdenfels County Railway) or Paartalbahn (Paar Valley Railway) are good examples for this. Other names are purely advertisement like the „Fugger-Express“ service Munich-Augsburg. You’ll find these names on trains, in announcements or press announcements. But you won’t find them on tickets or departure screens. For these purposes all of these routes have a letter number combination indicating the kind of service they are and a route number.
The most common ones are S for S-Bahn, RB for region train, RE for regional express, IRE for interregional express, IC for intercity and ICE for InterCity Express. The Schwarzwaldbahn is the RE2, the Paartalbahn RB13 and the Fugger-Express is RB86/RB87/RE8/RE9 depending on where they are heading after Augsburg and how often they stop. IC and ICE trains are numbered on an individual basis, similar to flights (something like IC2365 or ICE998) and are usually mainly referred to by destination.
Why do all of this? This shared logic makes travel within the entire country much more understandable. No matter where in the country I travel to I can see by the train name alone what kind of service to expect and what ticket will be valid on them. And that’s certainly more important then a cool name.
Good song
I worked for Amtrak from 1998-2016 and the first five years working the based in CHI on board The Lake Shore Limited and California Zephyr exposed me to both the east and west coasts. This is just the NEC. My friend, I cannot even tell you the degree of variance in equipment, paint schemes, livery, branding, classes of service, and even uniforms! And that is not even to mention the whole Acela Express, Acela Regional...........I remember it well. Everything that did not matter was changing, the only things that did NOT change were maintenance, communication, accountability, top heavy management, late trains, unreliable equipment, and rude, lazy ass employees. No wonder why the California Zephyr ran out of gas when I was on board working as a coach attendant in 2000........fuel leak right? NOPE. Sensor failure right? NOPE. There was no one in Denver who had it in writing that it was specifically their job to confirm the fuel level. Thus, right around Helper, UT power went out, train stopped...........and yet another embarrassing failure someone like me had to explain to our customers. Fun job, but after nightmares and crap like that every other week, it was time to better myself!
Catchy AF, I love it!

William tell overture?
We need to see the full lyrics!
Beacon (of light and of hope) Hill
Gonna be honest, I'm most in favor of using two names for each Regional. Hear me out:
The system I'm envisioning uses the "Northeast Regional" branding as a sub-franchise of Amtrak, with each train retaining an individual name, for example Trains 65/66/67 would be the Northeast Regional Night Owl. For the sake of ease, scheduling (and GIS data for Google Maps) would use just the Northeast Regional name, but timetables would include the specific train name with the number
They tried this in 1995!
@@ClassyWhale Wait, is that what the NortheastDirect branding was? I thought with that branding all individual names were completely scrubbed instead of just being relegated to only the nerdiest of rail enthusiasts
Fabulous!
Meanwhile in Southern California:
*Surfliner*
do a compleat version too
I LOVE IT!!!!!!
I think Alex Davis should do the singing
Agreed!
1:11 wait

Is it boring? maybe. Is it easier? Definitely
Whats up with "Keystone"?
They recycled that name for a few different operations
What was this to the tune of?
William Tell Overture
I was wondering what are the chords for this song?
