    From what I can tell, Finns are actually far from being unsocial introverts as stereotyped. From their expression and their body language they are actually rather cool and approachable.

      They are so cool. Even though the culture is more introverted, it’s also way more genuine. Like here in the US a lot of people appear friendly when you first meet them but it’s usually just an act that we are trained to do..which is almost worse.

    I used to like my neighbour in finland, but we never spoke and she did not know me. I bought flowers and put a note in it saying that "I am your neighbour and I think you are really cute and i really like you but im bit shy. can i have your number and we can go from there. please stick the answer on sticky note outside your apartment door" I then stuck it in her door through her mail slot.

      I actually have similar experiences.
      About 15-20 years ago, a good friend of mine used to work as a coach for the Austrian ski-jumping team while being a student.
      So every time the "Vierschanzentournee" (a.k.a. "Four Hills Tournament" or "German-Austrian Ski Jumping Week") came to Innsbruck where I live, he not only set me up with free tickets for the contest, but always dragged a number of Nordic athletes and their staff into our local for an unofficial and informal after show party.
      And especially the Finns belonged to those who were the most open and outgoing ones who e.g. were the first on board for any shenanigans we collectively considered to be a good idea (in our slightly inebriated state, I might add, so the qualification of "good" for some shenanigans might still be open for debate).
      The only Nordics I personally experienced as being a wee tiny bit more reserved sometimes than the others were the Norwegians, because at first, they often started out by just sitting there and enjoying themselves quietly, but one or two pints of a good Austrian brew always proved to be an excellent remedy for that. :-)
      Although I'm still not sure if all the Finns fully understood why German native speakers liked the Finnish term "kippis" so much (Spoiler: it's the onomatopoeia, because it sounds very close to the German "kipp es" which would translate roughly as "bottoms up" in English).

    • @Baalaaxa
      @Baalaaxa 3 года назад +3

      @@drops2cents260 Interesting story, and you're actually right; the Finnish toast "kippis" is most likely a composite loanword from German, like you said. It was probably introduced to Finns by the Hansa traders who were doing business around the Baltic sea and surrounding areas for quite some time at 1300's. And there are actually a lot of Proto-Germanic loanwords in Finnish language, like "kuningas" meaning "king". Many of those words are quite old and not even used in modern Germanic languages anymore.

      > the Finnish toast "kippis" is most likely a composite loanword from German, like you said
      To be precise, I only referred to the similarity in pronunciation of Finnish "kippis" and German "kipp es" because I have no idea if it is actually a composite loanword from German.
      I really wouldn't be surprised if that would be the case, though, actually I'd say it's at least very plausible (Wiktionary e.g. does claim too that it derives from German "kippen" (which means "to tip/tilt/upend/topple/dump" in English in general and also "to neck" a drink in British slang), but sadly doesn't provide any sources at all: en.wiktionary.org/wiki/kippis).

      LOL funny! (But there is a difference, small talk is small, pointless, weather, hihowareyouwhatsup vs. f.e. this video's example: "I like your sweater", which is input, it tells that "you" have an opinion regarding "me" which you express; neither what a person is thinking about something - nor that other person - are small, those things are big, it is already pretty big talk. Or asking a question: "you" "want to know" about "me", etc. Neither you, not anything "about me" are small things, they are not the weather, and they put you out there, wanting to know something specific, that knowing having a reason; "you want to know" "about me". It is not presumptuous; hi (hi, but why, I don't know you - yet), how are you (what's it to you, why would I tell you, I don't lie or make big things small, this even my intimate friends know not to interrogate of me, why are you asking? It is most inconvenient.) Etc. Hopefully it gives a window to Finnish thinking, not corrupted by city people trying to be "open and international", losing themselves to asking everyone "how are you?!" Unless one wants to hear answers that are painful to say and to hear, empty and irrelevant, or sad, facing the realities of life. Going by, going on, not well, not so good, could be better, what is the point of it? If someone says "Good!", then maybe he is stupid, or lying, or having a super day, but it would be dishonest to say Good, every day, as this is not Paradise, we have to work/duties, whatnot personal things that are inconvenient to tell to strangers. But answering something more specific would be very painless and nice and meaningful, as opposed to awkward. It is better to say "hello" and then be silent, than to ask "how are you", or telling about the weather. "Hello, I like your sweater" would be brave input that includes both "you" and "me." You and me aren't small, like the weather, we are big. Too big to answer in "who are you?" or even "how are you?" on the go, without getting an odd look of distrust that you will nail your heels to the floor and discuss it for 5 minutes if you really must know.)

      @@simohenrik1860 Thank you very much for the detailed and well explained "phenomena" behind what really is considered "small talk" in Finland (& Scandinavia). I had always had questions with regards to what exactly is small talk and it they don't like small talk how am I going to connect. Now you have explained that to me and it makes so much sense! Out of curiosity though, is it ever acceptable to approach a woman off the streets or in the store if maybe say I happen to like her? Can I walk to a random dude and tell him that I'm new in town and I'm looking for friends? Is that possible or not?

    As a American, married to a Finn, this is my opinion. Women around the world are not that much different. Most single women are attracted to men that stand out, this can later turn to your disadvantage, if you are a A-hole. Finnish women expect foreigners to explain themselves fully in conversations, while they keep their answers short. It's a balancing act, talking to Finns, they want you to talk to them, but they do not want you to talk too much & always only the truth, until you get to know them. It is very tricky to understand how & why that every Finn, has their own sense of humor & it is so easy for them to think you are a idiot, if they do not think you are funny. American humor, may or may not work with Finns, save trying to be funny, until after you get to know her better. Before they know you, Finns are the most anti-social people in the world, but once you break the ice & get to know them, they are some of the most fun loving & beautiful people. Go slow, be sure of yourself, tell the truth, be ready to explain your answers, & understand that they may never have long answers for anything. On the positive side, if they don't like you, they will not even waste 2 seconds talking to you. If they are talking to you, they are interested in getting to know you more. Finns are the least "FAKE" people that I have ever met. If they are Gold Diggers, you will know it & they won't try to hide it. Most Finns never even consider lying about anything. This can hurt, if you later get into a fight. Compared to American women, they don't play games & are very up-front. They are worth the extra time & effort.

While I knew that my "farmor" was from Finland, I was surprised to learn that the single largest percentage of my DNA (24%) comes from Finland (Pohjanmaa). Farmor was born in Helsinki -- as was her father -- but her mother was from Borga. Farfar's family is also exclusively from Finland, but they're actually Swedish (Ahvenanmaa or Aland Island). :D So I just discovered these videos, exploring out of curiosity! :D

In your death bed, hopefully not sooner than at least a hundred years from now, what will you think? Will you congratulate yourself for not taking any chances and having lived safely, or will you congratulate yourself for living your life and, while making some mistakes, having had fun and maybe found the love of your life? These are the questions to ask. :D

    • @gnawershreth
      @gnawershreth 6 лет назад +2

      Yup, I agree. It's just bound to be a lot of work so you really have to be willing to work for it if you want an international relationship to work.
      I don't really believe in the whole "The one and only!" stuff, as I think there are plenty of people out there who'd be a great match for someone, so it'd really have to be something extremely special for me to consider dating someone from another country. It'd probably also have to be someone from a nearby country, that'd make distance, culture differences etc. less of a concern for me.
      I'm from Denmark and if I was dating someone from one of the other Nordic countries, from Germany or from the Netherlands there probably wouldn't be many cultural problems to work out. There are differences for sure, but they're not that big really. It'd also be fairly easy to go visit friends and family once in a while since the distances aren't that crazy.
      Dating someone from the other side of the world just wouldn't be something I would be interested in. I suppose it might work out if they planned on settling here for good, but I have no intention of suddenly moving to South America, Japan or whatever so I'd not actively seek out a relationship with someone from such far-away countries.
      Any relationship has plenty of things to work on, to deal with etc. Adding a whole bunch of extra issues (distance, cultural differences, values, perhaps religion, dietary restrictions etc. etc) on top of that just doesn't seem worthwhile to me honestly. Of course you should never say never, and all of that stuff, but it just seems needlessly complicated to me to be perfectly honest. There are plenty of wonderful people right here in Denmark (and the surrounding countries) to date. :P

    Four years ago,i worked as a waiter in Rhodes island.I never worked with tourists before,it was my first time.Until then,couple of years,i had to do only with Greeks.So i was terrified because everyone in my country were saying for the foreigners,especially for Scandinavian people,that they are cold,unhappy,robot,etc and i was wondering how i will do my job if i have to work with this kind of people.For the first two weeks i was very anxious.I was stretching my arm to leave the glasses on the table and i had so obvious tremble that many of them started to laugh.So i was trying to save the situation with jokes and by saying '''i drunk too much last night''' and stuff like this.The people laughed harder and told me jokes as well.I began to feel better and better everyday.At the end i was totally comfortable.They saw and understood how i was feelin and instead of tease me,they helped me with their way to go happy for work.I haven't friends from my country.In Rhodes i made friends from all over the world.I loved them.Especially the people from Finland.I discovered that they are sweet and very very good people and they have high culture.One culture that we don't have in Greece-and will never have.And the girls.The Finnish girls are the most beautiful in the world.I loved them too.Do you know why?Because they were fabulous as goddesses of love and nevertheless they were so cute,so approachable.In my country the girls are snob.They can't make even a conversation.They are bored with themselfes and with the others.For the only thing they care is for their nails and hairs.They reject you with one very bad way,they make you feel awful and you regret just because you tried to talk to them.They are miserable.With the Finnish girls,to the other hand,you can talk for a lot of things.They are optimistics,they have dreams and purposes,they have hobbies and interestings and even if they don't see you in erotic way they deny so wonderful that you don't feel bad afterwards,instead you say '''ok,let's continue our drink'' and that's all.I had some girlfriends from Finland and i always remember them with love.So i can't accept people like greeks.People who tease me just because i am musician and i write poems.Just because i choose to think,to worry,to feel.I can't be acceptable from people who doesn't gives a shit about the life and see me crazy in love for her.And yes,i would like to live in Finland if i could.To meet one nice,right person to get married and make our children and be happy.Anyways.You never know when you will meet the right person as a friend said at the comments.God bless you all.

I am half Finnish and I am here some months, also to visit family, and there are lot of nice girls, but most are distant a bit. Last time in supermarket a girl asked me to pick something high off the shelve, and it was a chance to talk, but I didnt want to give feeling of being respectful. I come from Netherlands a much rude and open social culture and social talk is normal. But when people are harder to conversate with i become more closed too. Its quite a culture shock. Aleksi Himself Helsinki, but immediately after arriving I would take a train to Kuopio (if my friend is not repented by then!) And then to Kotka. Not so much time (9-10 days), but I hope to be able to try famous mämmi and Kalakukko.

    Being more social is such a game changer that the most talkative girl seemed more attractive to me than anyone that was interviewed..
    It makes me think if this is just a cultural thing (I'm Brazilian) or it's something more universal.

    • @Baalaaxa
      @Baalaaxa 3 года назад +1

      I'm not a scientist nor an expert of human behaviour, but in my opinion its kind of universal trait. It's a human thing, we generally enjoy the company of people who we find easily relatable. And if a person is sociable, talkative, funny, friendly and easygoing we tend to be attracted to them. On the contrary, if a person is reserved, quiet, distant, etc. we can find them harder to relate to, or even resemble a possible threat to us.

    • @ellevasc
      @ellevasc Год назад

      @@Baalaaxa I don’t think it’s a universal thing. I would also get defensive if someone came on to me “too strong” like they said. I wouldn’t mind a guy that talks but I wouldn’t mind one that doesn’t talk much either. I’m not saying this is entirely a cultural thing either, tho. I’d say it’s mostly personal. Even if in Finland, for example, people tend to be a bit more open than in Latin America, there are still Finns that are sociable/ like sociable people and Latin Americans that are shy/ like shy people. People are just different from each other, tbh.
