toyota should've made the new 86 a variant of the corolla like this, hatchbacks embody the spirit of the 86 better imo, and they're more useful and low-key. I think the reason everybody thinks the 86 is too slow is because it looks too fast, if they made it as a corolla people would look at it in a different light, closer to the original AE86 in design and feeling.
Owen Lee I wouldn't mind them calling it an 86 and making it a hatch as long as it came stock RWD and had near perfect weight distribution and great handling. Which would be waisted on a hatch! Keep it the Toyota ae86 for the people who want a good coupe for an affordable price. We don't have anything like it on the market while there are a shit ton of hot hatches to choose from. Variaty is good.
agreed, the "Hachi-Roku" originally was a Corolla and they should've kept it that way (btw the GT86 '12 would probably be considered slow no matter the design considering that the engine pushes 197bhp while weighing about 1100kg, but having a top speed of only 200)

Too bad the real Corolla XSE is $22k for a 132hp car.. Missed opportunity. Imagine a RWD Corolla hatch with a 6 spd, limited diff option, and the Camry 2.5ltr motor in it. That would sell like crazy! This is such a good looking car, especially that color of yellow.
God you are a pain in the ass. Comment section after comment section, vid after vid ; your kind is making youtube a very dirty place. Always bitching about more HP and too high prices, withtout understanding the world around you. It's painful to watch. Grow a pair and come back to comment.
@@boboutelama5748 why so mad? He's 100% right! This is a 5 seater car with only 132HP. It might work in other countries but in the US it will be under powered. Its a hatchback so its meant to haul things and people. I had a 2004 mazda 3 hatchback 5-speed with 160 hp. With me driving and 2 big passengers and a few things in the hatch it struggled. It really sucks to feel the car struggle. Now that was a 15 year-old car so things have changed but still. Imagine 3 people in the car and the AC on. Prayers Up.The Lexus CTh hybrid had the same issues. It could not easily catch speed getting on the highway.
@@boboutelama5748 chief its a giant fucking hatch with one 132, what are you on about, hes not asking for them to make it standard like that he just wished they had a a special one with that. jesus fuck
They should do an "FD throwback" with the restriction that all cars have to be built like they would have been back then. It'll show who can really drive versus who just uses the power to push themselves through.
TypeR1911 the standard for FD is 1000hp. Which is why alot of ppl cannot compete, like us regular guys who have built cars but do not have any sponsors or big money. There's a story about how FD is becoming more about who has more money and HP.
NissanHyoryuLyfe another reason many people dont think about is grip. The level of grip has gone up so much thru the years that these cars don't slide well unless you have a ton of HP. Thats kinda why HP has gone up since 15 years ago when FD started.
Thanks Guys U are generous in showing all ur mods in this car a work of Art! For me working in a Car dealer as an Auto Tech for 20 yrs.. I’m tired of modifying anything in my car... so I just buy the base model race/ track edition car drive hard, drift and return to Dealer if something breaks for warranty lol...
Guys the new format is GREAT .hats off to the editor..you guys are nailing it ,🤘😲🤘 oooooo P.m.S Dan you got mad skills BRO.!!!! Oops that was dum cause you already knew that....hahahaha anyways (KILL all TIRES).
the 86 is only heavier by 400lbs, considering it is safer (crashing), bigger wheels/brakes, more than double its HP, 50% more torque, not to mention it is one of THE best handling chassis ever made, i'd say it's way better than the AE86. The AE86 wasn't even good, it was just light and RWD. I'm a bit confused by your price comparison, are you comparing a new 86 to a used AE86? of course it would be more expensive!! and so would a RWD 2 door corolla is Toyota made one? and why would insurance be any different between a new 86 and a RWD 2 door corolla? or are you comparing the new 86 to the AE86 again?
the 86 only heavier by 400 lbs? Some ae86's weighed 950kg (2094 lbs) some gt86's weigh 1298kg (2862 lbs) even the lightest gt86 weighing 1,190kg (2624 lbs which btw is only for japan the lightest for the US and a bunch of other places is only 1251 kg or 2758 pounds) would still put it at closer to 600 pounds but for most in the US would be 700+ pounds heavier. bigger wheels? lmao you need to google "are bigger wheels better" (hint they're not) brakes.... maybe it's got better brakes. But honestly the first thing i would do even with a modern gt86 is change wheels, tires, brakes. double the hp? 128 is not half of 200 boi. the power to weight ratio is really not that far off.... and let's not forget that older cars are so much easier to tune than newer ones (and cheaper too) handling is something that is so hard to say for sure if 1 car is better or not, yes the ae86 had a live axle, because of that you can't change the camber of the rear wheels, and because of that most people usually had a lot of oversteering. But a stiffer front end and a somewhat looser rear end (compared to the front you still want it stiffer than stock) usually fixed that completely (except most people really don't know how to properly tune the suspension) what the newer car does have is power steering, which for a track car.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not to mention every other "safety feature" newer cars have. That usually just limit it from the best. the prices i was talking about was how much an ae86 would cost today counting inflation for how much it used to cost back in the 80's, same with the insurance. Finally i'm gonna say that yes the gt86 is a great car... maybe even one of the best cars out right now (it's definitely the best in toyota's lineup why the camry isn't manual transmission but the modern corolla is idk) what im really angry at is most car companies just neglecting what most cars once were. have i ever even driven an ae86 or a gt86 in real life? No.... But i have driven both in Assetto Corsa which is supposed to be a racing sim, and i can tell you i definitely prefer the ae86. I can't tell you how many times on akina servers i pass Supras, Skylines, and rx-7's in a STOCK ae86. just because it's that much lighter and on a tight track or on togue weight is very important, there's no point in being able to accelerate faster if you can just carry another 10-20kmh in a corner since you can use the same tire compounds as the other cars
Bladez Andrew Bladez Andrew you're missing the point... And you're missing your initial comment entirely. But let's digress. I only did a quick google and the first go figure that popped up was 90 something hp, so thanks for the correction. Regardless of power/weight, which is neither of these car's goal, the 86 is still the better car. I've driven both, no matter how good a driving sim is, it will never be the same. The AE86 is a lot harder to drive, you really do need skills, the 86 is so easy, the steering and balance of the car is as good as it gets, I almost traded in my sti for it, but it's just not practical. And I'm not talking about the safety nanny features, I'm talking about actually crashing, I'll take my chances of surviving in a 86, thanks. I do understand bigger isn't always better, but when the both tire sizes are designed for the car, bigger is better, at the limit. Heat management is better, fit bigger brakes without sacrificing too much sidewall, and wider by a healthy margin. Let's get back to your original comment. Toyota did build a 2 door RWD, it's just not named Corolla. You just have to get with the times, heavier doesn't always mean it's worse. Material cost itself has skyrocketed in price, can't blame Toyota for that one, and if the AE86 came out today... I bet the insurance will be similar.
This makes me really happy. Toyota is breaking out of their boring label. The first gen Matrix got some love but the 2nd gen didnt get much love, and it really makes me happy the new Corolla Hatchbacks are getting a lot of love.
So i have been holding on to this video for a while and glad i did to give it the attention it deserves .... Bravo Papadakis 👏🏼👏🏼 and thanks Hoonigan for the video !
There might be seriously 1 person that gets this but papadakis is literally the Trevor Wittman of the car world looks the same and does the same but with cars this guy transforms fwd cars to rwd cars and does it well along with enhancing power
I love the practical race oriented details. Very impressive! The biggest glaring question I have is why didn't Stephan Papadakis get rid of the Ackermann steering geometry and go with a drifting optimized equal steering angle setup? When drifting, the improvement to how well/long you can hold a high angle drift is incredible when driving a car with equal angle steering compared to a car with the Ackermann angle optimized for non-slip steering (not drifting). The car doesn't keep trying to spin out on you like a stock Ackermann setup does. For those that don't know what I'm talking about, google "steering Ackermann".
The Corolla's competitors is the Civic and Honda has the SI and the type R corolla has noting just a shitty S and now SE with only 132 hp. they gotta come outa with a modifiable corolla.
CAT MARIO exactly toyota are like too cheesy and all for soccer mom car it blows me after almost 20 years they are finally coming out with the Supra smh and the toyota celica was nice but again fwd and they finally made the 86 rwd but it's still not a corolla they need to make it with either Awd or Rwd with Turbo
In america the civic had shit in 2005 but corolla had an xrs which was a 2500lb 8200redline 187hp .003lbft of torque beast with a 6 speed and vvtl-i (toyota vtec)
@LTS_FOREVER _ It's a simple physics and proven. If your FWD car is heavy at the back and climbs a very steeped road, the front tires will slips easily and your car won't move forward.
Do you think FWD cars converted to RWD should be in Formula D... 3, 2, 1...FIGHT!

Too bad the real Corolla XSE is $22k for a 132hp car.. Missed opportunity.
Imagine a RWD Corolla hatch with a 6 spd, limited diff option, and the Camry 2.5ltr motor in it. That would sell like crazy! This is such a good looking car, especially that color of yellow.
yes i know! finaly they got corolla to look good again. honestly i would not be disepointed if this as the new ae86, design wise that is.
@@boboutelama5748 chief its a giant fucking hatch with one 132, what are you on about, hes not asking for them to make it standard like that he just wished they had a a special one with that. jesus fuck
@@zhongxina5956 it's actually 169 horsepower. It's a newer engine than the 2014-2019 Corolla sedans.
Please do one on fredricos 599!
Tyler T the one on fire at long beach?
manilove2pwn it's already rebuilt and was competing last weekend
Really digging the more in depth build biology and having someone host it who is obviously very knowledgeable is awesome.
you know i wish someone would just interview this dude. he really is legendary.
U guys need to come to New Zealand some time🤘🏻🤘🏻 sick video as well🤘🏻🤘🏻

If only Toyota just make it RWD from the Factory (or at-least a FWD or RWD option would be nice), its like the Corolla is making a real comeback
This Corolla has 1200hp. Dean Kearney has 1500hp. we are definitely seeing 2000hp drift cars in FD soon LOL
Crazy right. Remember when 400hp was a LOT?
1000hp is pretty much the standard for the past 3-4 years
They should do an "FD throwback" with the restriction that all cars have to be built like they would have been back then.
Man, what a great guy! Down to earth, super informative, enthusiastic and obviously proud of their work! That was a great video!!!

Guys the new format is GREAT .hats off to the editor..you guys are nailing it ,🤘😲🤘 oooooo P.m.S Dan you got mad skills BRO.!!!! Oops that was dum cause you already knew that....hahahaha anyways (KILL all TIRES).
Wait, the engine from my Camry is in this thing?!?! This is giving me some bad ideas.
nightc1 It's not even the V6 either. That's the crazy thing!
I love how proud guy to helped make it is! it's a amazing build
I swear this car just came out. and someone bought it and made it a beast this fast?
The power of money.
so the roof is now called the hood??? hahahaha
he is confused, too much rockstar
If they would actually make another RWD 2 door corolla again, i guarantee it will be one of the best cars ever.... But we can only dream.....
uh....... aka Toyota 86?
except the modern 86 is heavier, and costs more than what an ae86 would cost today not to mention insurance.
the 86 is only heavier by 400lbs, considering it is safer (crashing), bigger wheels/brakes, more than double its HP, 50% more torque, not to mention it is one of THE best handling chassis ever made, i'd say it's way better than the AE86.
I bet the insurance will be similar.
a single cylinder makes more horsepower than most cars.
This makes me really happy. Toyota is breaking out of their boring label. The first gen Matrix got some love but the 2nd gen didnt get much love, and it really makes me happy the new Corolla Hatchbacks are getting a lot of love.
Went back to watching this after I saw Tuerck’s FD Corolla HB. Ya’ll need to do a video about that car. Prolly my favorite car in FD.
20:07 peep the new project in the back
The whole explanation tells me that will never be able to do this o my own.
Happy birthday to me, a 1200 HP Yota!
Classik562 Happy birthday 🎈
Happy Birthday Classik562!
I hope you have a great day & be safe :)
This guy does a great job of breaking down a car. This is only episode 2. I would like to see many more!
So i have been holding on to this video for a while and glad i did to give it the attention it deserves .... Bravo Papadakis 👏🏼👏🏼 and thanks Hoonigan for the video !
Say what show it is in the title please.
Fixed
How much is a rwd conversion, and manual swap for a Camry? It does have the same motor.
Is the new one? If it is you got a nasty 270BHP and see arabs how drift fwd
It’s not gonna be worth it unless you’ll be pushing a good amount of horses. If not, just go get a different car, lol.
Not worth the money lol get a CTS V or a vette if you wanna spend that much money on a rwd manual car
I'm guessing he meant roof. Kept saying hood but pointing to the roof lol.
There might be seriously 1 person that gets this but papadakis is literally the Trevor Wittman of the car world looks the same and does the same but with cars this guy transforms fwd cars to rwd cars and does it well along with enhancing power
inspiring video. thanks from dk
Steph and Aasbo run one of the greatest drift programs in the world.
FWD Converted to RWD is rite
Taco Gaming he cleansed its soul
The chassis isnt made for the rear wheels to power the car ,, could be deadly,, still pretty badass tho
x savage x what you meannnn???? When you swap a fwd to a rwd obviously you change the chassis
I just gained a little more respect for the 2AR.
This car is beautiful! It is really cool to see so much engineering working together to make something fantastic. Well done!
If they make them in rwd from factory they they would make a lot more sales
The Corolla's competitors is the Civic and Honda has the SI and the type R corolla has noting just a shitty S and now SE with only 132 hp. they gotta come outa with a modifiable corolla.
Flexgado24 I just wish the s sport model has a rwd instead of fwd. If that happens It will sell like hotcakes for drifting
What car is under the cover that’s behind him while discussing the steering?
Could be their Rolls. I think I saw it in another episode
No' look's like a fastback mustang.
THE BEST CAMRY EVER BUILT!!
PR knows how to build em!!
Brother you are an engineering genius. Steph is the man🏆🏆🏆🏁🏁🏁
Why do people hate FWD so much? And love RWD? Can't you just show respect for FWD?
Without hill assist, most FWD will slips and have difficulty climbing a steep road.
@LTS_FOREVER _ It's a simple physics and proven. If your FWD car is heavy at the back and climbs a very steeped road, the front tires will slips easily and your car won't move forward.
