- Hepatitis C is a viral infection causing liver disease. Over 3 million people in the US are infected with hepatitis C and over half remain undiagnosed. The vast majority of individuals living with hepatitis C do not have symptoms. Hepatitis C is transmitted through contact with infected blood and many are unaware of their infection. If left untreated, hepatitis C can damage the liver to the point of cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver failure. The good news is that there are short-duration treatments that can lead to cure. So many people are infected and are not diagnosed but I'm a retired Medical Laboratory Technologist who contracted hepatitis C while processing a contaminated sample in 1983 at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in NY City. At that time HIV and hepatitis C were causing an epidemic and their were no blood tests or treatments for either. So little was know about hepatitis C that it was named Non A non B hepatitis. In 1992 I was a blood bank supervisor at Bergen Community Regional Blood Center in Paramus, NJ when the FDA approved a diagnostic test for hepatitis C and performed the blond test on myself to confirm it and it was positive yet still their was no treatment.
When antivirals became available I was successfully treated and the virus was cleared from my system.

@John Levison i have been working in the field of hep c and b for over 3 years, you cannot cure this without DAA's for a full course either 3 or 6 months of treatment.
@John Levison it doesn't work neither does African, Indian or American herb. What does truly work with a staggering 98.8% success rate is DAA's a full course depending upon genotype and viral load for 3 to 6 months.

Sorry guys, these replies never notified me. If you have insurance, usually you just need your doctor to obtain 2 sets of hep c labs 6 months apart displaying your genotype, viral load, hep b/hiv status, etc. Your doctor should know which labs are necessary to obtain. Referral to an ID or gastroenterologist is likely necessary. They also need to do a fibrosis score to stage the level of cirrhosis of the liver. If you do not have insurance, drug companies often participate in free drug programs that your specialty pharmacist can help you navigate.

I got completely cured in 2005 with Interferon. I found out I had it when I turned yellow and was peeing what looked like dark red blood. I didn`t get many side effects from the treatment either.

So here is the pathogenesis for Hep C.....
1. First, Hep C resides in the liver and makes auto-duplicates of itself.
2. Second, the immune cells in the liver, including WBCs, attack to try to kill off the Hep C cells, but cannot kill off all of them as the Hep C viral cells continue to mass-duplicate.
3. The immune system then gets overwhelmed by the attempted kill-offs that additional immune cell mediators then attack the virus - including fibroblasts and macrophages, which are sadly, overwhelmed, and then attack the good liver cells and necrotize them, and this leads to an adverse damage effect where new immune mediators, including TNF-a and IL-6, create more and more scar tissue to try to repair the affected area where once live and good liver cells had resided. But this scar tissue causes choke-off in the affected area (hypoxia), causing liver function to suffer to start its process of progressive damage.
4. The more scar tissue the liver develops after the Hep C virus kills a lot of the good liver cells, the higher the risk of cirrhosis if it is not treated in time.

ALFA-INTERFERON and RIBAVIRIN.. its a cancer and antiviral cocktail.. that have many side effects.. but it works..
