    If you come here wondering how long it’s gonna take for you to heal:
    I snapped my 5th metatarsal in half, right in the middle of the bone in my left foot. The bone was still aligned properly though. I was back running a little over 2 months later!
    I know everyone heals differently but just wanted to share my experience with this injury.

    I broke my 5th metatarsal 2 weeks ago- avulsion fracture, I wore a tall air boot cast for a week, short boot cast for 4 days while at work and nothing at home and now a tight stiff shoe when out but able to totally weight bear and almost back fully functioning! Proper rest and immediate integration of physio and strengthening exercises helped immensely- defiantly only do what your doctor recommends, I’m glad I’ve been lucky enough to keep pain to a minimum and still maintain a somewhat normal life!

      I got Hit during very light sparring in kickboxing, actually I was hitting with some strange kick and guy blocked the kick with elbow. I did not feel like it hurt much, but when I got home, it was red a bit .... days later bruised and I could walk but was limping a bit and there was decent amount of pain but nothing too bad.
      Compressed it with gaze.... and did not do anything about it. Now it has been 2 months later, most of the time feels like nothing ever happened, and that it was not fractured, but there is slight discoloration around area, very mild, however bone on that side now seems a tiny bit thicker than the other one, also at times slight pain comes up for a second so i guess it was not harmless as I tought at the beggining.

    Hello talking Docs! I just wanted to say thank you for your video. I got rid of my walking shoe two days ago, which marked the magic number of exactly six weeks. I was told to slowly ramp up and let my foot tell me how much is possible. So far I'm already walking quite comfortably with only small occasional annoyances. Your video has calmed me down on my decision to take conservative treatment (1 doctor suggested surgery, 2 were against it). Thank you again and please keep up the informative and humorous content!

    Great information. I am at the 3 month point following a 5th metatarsal fracture. I am still working on muscle strength it felt like I was learning to walk again. Did anyone see Victoria Beckham’s latest(2018) fracture? Hashtag tag no big deal and like a week later she was in Kenya and a week after that in heels. I guess compared to all of David Beckham’s injuries it pales in comparison. Felt very debilitating for me. My tip is keep your strength in the rest of your body it will be easier to get walking again if you only need to exercise your foot once healed. Plus the fear of re-injury cannot be ignored it is tough but there is way worse. I feel grateful so much info available. Cheers!

      I noticed that. Celebrities get the best care for who they are and because they can afford it. Have been feeling a bit of celebrity envy for this reason as they seem to bounce back in a few weeks while the rest of us have to do detective work on our lack of progress.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 лет назад +5

      Hi Louise. There is some potential for celebrities to have access to better care however the majority of orthopedic surgeons are treating patients who are just normal people. And for this injury celebrities would get the same care - aircast. They may consider a bone stimulator which is expensive that can speed up healing but usually is not necessary. Don't be envious - can you imagine if someone was ready to take a picture every time you took a bite of foot at a restaurant?

    Hi Docs!
    Thank you for this very informative video. 7 weeks ago, I fell over a step. I have a closed displaced fracture of the neck of the 5th metatarsal (left foot). I've been in a tall CAM walker boot for 7 weeks - one more week to go. I don't have much pain at this point but I'm apparently healing kind of slowly, so I was told to wear the boot for 8 weeks instead of 6. I only wear the boot when I'm standing and/or walking (not when I'm sitting or laying down).
    Here's my question: When the boot is off and I'm laying down, is it a good idea for me to move my foot around to help re-strengthen my foot and prevent atrophy? I've been doing circles with my ankle, pivoting my foot up and down from the ankle, and slowly closing and opening my toes. Sports Medicine doctor said yes I should - Podiatrist said no I shouldn't. What do you think? Thank you VERY much.
    Best regards, K

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 лет назад

      Hi Kara. With respect to physio, you are able to start moving your foot and ankle as the bone starts to heal. The degree to which you do this should be discussed with your treating surgeon. Good luck.

    I somehow hurt my foot in March. I think it is from the foot massage g machine my husband bought me. I have done ice/heat, physical therapy, taping my foot, xray, pain gel, referred to podiatrist who did MRI of peroneal area that showed nothing but he gave me an injection for fluid behind bone. That didn't do anything. Went back to primary and got referred to a sports medicine doc. He thinks it is a fracture on 5th metatarsal (right where it juts out). Oh my gosh! The boot is almost like heaven. I almost feel like doing a footectomy. Tonight (morning) can't sleep from all this burning, stinging, tearing feeling. I am thankful I get an MRI of the corre t area today and follow-up next week.

    Just ended up with a Jones fracture a few weeks ago, clean and non displaced, you literally can barely see it on X ray, stopped hurting as soon as the swelling went down but it's there. It's scary and frustrating, and my doctor really pushed for conservative treatment (CAM boot with NWB) which is also scary and frustrating for an active person like I am worried about getting back on both feet and about rebreaks. Thanks for your video, it's done a lot more to reassure me than the actual doctor who treated me. Any advice? I know just be patient, but it's tough. First available surgery date for a screw wasn't until almost six weeks out from the break anyway so I think I'm going to ride this out. I kid you not, your video is probably the most encouraging thing anyone on the internet says about Jones fractures treated conservatively.

      Thought I'd give an update. At 7.5 weeks the xrays showed enough healing to walk in a CAM walker and with weight bearing the healing really accelerated. At 12.5 weeks from fracture (last week) I was cleared to return to shoes and to full activities slowly. Right now I'm still walking with a limp and the foot gets a little sore at the end of the day but normal life is that much closer. Thank you guys for your video, it really helped.

    Wish one of you guys was working in the ER when I fractured it for the first time back in October of 2020. I was playing golf and was hitting out of a hazard (I know, what did I hit it in the hazard for?) when my foot gave way and it felt like my foot imploded. I went to the emergency room after I tried and hit one more shot and realized that was not terribly bright. The guy xrayed it and said it was sprained and not fractured. I tried to stay off of it and follow the medical advice. I still was walking my two dogs every day and it was only marginally improving. In late January of 2021, I was walking my dogs and my foot folded up like a taco. I figured a trip to the ER was a waste of time because I was certain I got bad advice the first time so I went to a specialist. They told me I had fractured it and they were able to access the first X-ray and said it was fractured the first time. The specialist had me in a non walking boot for about 4 months. Long story short is it hasn't really improved a whole lot. My foot is shaped like an old patriot three cornered hat. It starts the day okay but gets worse through the day. Just went to another specialist last week and he said I have a non union fracture. He wants me to do the electric pulsating device to stimulate bone growth. He said of that doesn't work, I should consider letting them rebrake it and putting a screw in it. I fear the first misdiagnosis has sent me down a path of just having to deal with it and waiting for it to rebrake on its own. I'm afraid to play golf on any course with any slope because it feels so unstable and is just a matter of time before it breaks again. What do you guys think about the machine that stimulates bone growth? Is it the real deal? Love to hear any thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Next time, I'm taking the penalty out of the hazard and will take a drop!

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      Hi Dancersdiary. Heat will commonly make an injury feel better by bringing more blood supply to the area. Ice aids in recovery by reducing swelling and providing a local numbing effect to reduce pain. Both are a good idea depending on the scenario. You can continue to do this until you recover. Hope that helps.

    how. long do I have to wait till I can skateboard again after breaking fifth metatarsal? will I be able to do tricks and jump? and also will my bone be strong enough again? like after 5 months?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  7 лет назад

      How soon a patient can return to sport or other activities is a very individualized decision based on the severity of the initial injury, the healing to date, the age and health of the patient as well as the activity that they want to return to. Often more aggressive activities like skateboarding cannot be resumed for longer periods of time but would continue to carry the risk of repeat injury. That decision would be based on your physician's physical examination and other investigations like serial xrays.

      Never had xrays but about 2 and 1/2 months ago i landed on my ankle trying to ollie a 4 stair, something i had done before but got complacent with. Over committed and destroyed what i believe is my fifth meta tarsal. Had severe bruising on both sides of the foot and all the way up into the toes. After about 6 weeks i could ride again but no flip tricks, they would cause server pain on the injury and felt like they were setting it back. Skated today with some flip tricks and still minor pain from time to time. Best bet is to probably wait 3 months before doing any skating, i wish i had fought the temptations to get back on the board

It literally comes & goes in waves and even feels like the pain goes up that side a little bit....Like right now i have my feet up, no pain, but 2 minutes ago, it was killing me, still with feet up...uggh I FINALLY went to a doctor last week, told me i need orthotics. Never did an x-ray or anything, but this has been happening for years...SO frustrating.... I don't walk right anymore, the only time i walk right is when i have so much padding on my foot so the pain isn't so bad....I'm thinking he should of ordered an x-ray, but then i think what could they really do anyway if they did do an xray since i've had this for years?? I mean not to put you out of a job, but foot surgery is scary shit...lol

      Hi Jack. When you break any bone in your foot, you will often change your gait and the way you load your foot so some of the pain can be compensatory. Whether or not some of the other bones of your foot are involved in your injury would require a physical examination, review of your imaging and possibly further imaging if there is ongoing suspicion. Good luck.

      I landed on a shell while running, rolled my foot and broke my fifth metatarsal (classic!). I was back in the gym the following week. realizing I had a foot injury, I went directly to a foot and ankle specialist who put by on crutches in a boot. I was back in the gym with his blessing the following week doing one-legged rowing and the hand cycle. I was on crutches for five weeks, but I continued on weight machines where I could sit and eventually when I could bear weight I took on more at the gym. When I graduated to a surgical shoe I was told I can deadlift and squat - anything that didn't involve impact. I'm an olympic weightlifter and I run for cardio, so staying out of the gym drives me insane. The doctor told me that so long as I didn't put any pressure on the injured foot at first I could go to the gym and that getting your heart pumping, and eventually weight training all help the bone heal. I also took zinc, copper, 5,000 IU vitamin D3, calcium, Lysine, Taurine, K2, magnesium, Omega-3, ate a ton of sardines and greens and used an exogen device. So, you don't have to wait that long to return to the gym, you just have to really tailor your workout to accommodate your injury.

      Hi I just fractured my fifth metatarsal last Wednesday on vacation. For the past three years I have been going to the gym really intensely. So far I know that my fracture was "minimally displaced" and mid shaft. I am trying to figure out when I can go back. I was able to do little things today at home that are easy like donkey kicks but i don't want to move backwards. Do you have any ideas for workouts with this injury? I just don't want to lose the muscle I have built in my legs.

    Thx so much for this video. I suffered an oblique fifth metatarsal fracture at the shaft that was displaced. This was April 15, 2016. I was put in an Aircast for 8 mos (yes, eight months) and at 5 mos, after no healing seen, an Exogen bone stimulator was begun at 20m daily for 3 mos. I was told after that it looked "ok" and I could continue the stimulator "if I wanted to". Imagine my shock that it felt the same but I was told it was fine so I plugged on.
    Saw a podiatrist 2 weeks ago and he did an MRI and the same fx was seen with displacement, nonunion, etc. now we are trying 6 weeks more of bone stim, vitamin D, and I'm going to try to "go easy" on it myself as I'm a relatively poor surgical candidate. I'm just very angry that surgery will be required thereafter and will be much more extensive than I would've needed last year. I'm told this will require bone grafting. Anyone who has had this surgery or can provide any info, will u please contact me? Thx!

      Glad you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you are doing all of the right things - immobilization, vitamin D (you should watch the video) and the bone stimulator. I think there comes a time in the "post-injury phase" that a "displaced break-" Not a fracture, anymore-- should be addressed quicker than that. One CANNOT continue to use Crutches and Knee Scooters for 6-8 months.
      It's psychologically crazy.
      I am not a doctor, but one is simply putting off the inevitible.
      If there's NO UNION after 6 weeks, I would Opt for the Surgery. The Surgery is relatively simply for podiatric surgeons or orthopedic surgeons. The 5th Metatarsal is a Common Break.
      I have that right now. It happened in March. I felt nothing. No Pain, no swelling, but I felt the weakness and the Bone Bruising. a "Bump" appeared on the dorsal(top) part of the foot. Then the more I walked, the more Pinching and burning sensations I felt. And finally, I said, "Hey, I have to have this looked at." Lo and behold, I had a rotated(because I continued to walk on it, not knowing I had a broken bone) and it has become displaced. It's not going to Join, and if it does, it's not going to be correct.
      Solution? Listen to the Surgeon. I'm having my surgery Next Friday, the 12th. It's out patient.
      I'll be home, in some pain and must stay off, NWB for 6 to 8 weeks. Best get started on the healing process.
      Don't procrastinate. You're putting off the inevitible, AND frankly, you don't want to run the risk of an infection; do you?
      That can lead to some really serious issues. Especially with an Open Fracture for several months? If the Infection gets into the Open ended bone, it can potentially get into your entire bloodstream. And then you'll have to have a PIC Line of Dripping Anti-Biotics.,
      Get the surgery. Start the healing process as soon as you can

    • @lorasyt3191
      @lorasyt3191 7 лет назад

      Paul Anthony First, before I forget, it's not an open fracture. I definitely haven't had bone hanging out of my skin at any point. Like u, I didn't have a lot of pain but noticed swelling and bruising and a lump on the side and top of my foot, along with crooked toes. Then I went in and the X-ray showed a fifth metatarsal fracture at the shaft, displaced. As I was a relatively poor surgical candidate, the doctor tried the aircast for 8 mos and started the Exogen bone stimulator at 6 mos. I was told then that it worked and things were fine but that I could continue the bone stimulator if I "wanted". When at a routine podiatry appt last month my doctor saw the toe abnormalities and did an X-ray, which was abnormal, then ordered an MRI, which showed the fracture looked the same, displaced fifth metatarsal, with floating bone fragments, as before. Because I'm a relatively poor surgical candidate, he wants to avoid surgery so we are trying increased vitamin D and a bone stimulator. If I have to have surgery at this point, unfortunately it wouldn't be typical fifth metatarsal surgery. It'll be more extensive with bone grafting from my hip, which I'm very leery of. So I'm praying this six weeks brings healing. But I would've definitely chosen surgery last year when it wasn't healing had the doctor made it clear it hadn't healed in August. I have no clue why he told me it was healed. Good luck to u!

      @TalkingWithDocs  6 лет назад +1

      Hi aleesha. So every case is different but typically with an avulsion fracture we treat them like a severe sprain and that means an aircast boot for 4-6 weeks. The main reason is that you want the ligaments to heal short rather than long to reduce the risk of having an ankle that is chronically unstable. And after the 4-6 weeks, lots of physiotherapy. The swelling and bruising will gradually subside. Good luck to you! And thanks for watching.

    so I fractured my fifth metatarsal over a year ago. The doctor explained I had had a premature break probably when I was in high school, sometime before 18. Long story short I never knew it was broken and it healed incorrectly, the growth plates never fused properly. Two winters ago and I came down on that bad foot really hard and instantly felt incredible pain and couldn’t put any weight on it, come to discover I broke my foot again, well fractured the fifth metatarsal. I had foot surgery over a year ago. i’ll like to work out and squall and dead lift and I still snowboard to a calmer degree. although it’s not much pain, still to this day I have a sensation of wobbly Ness and instability stemming right from that fifth metatarsal right up the ankle to the calf muscles.
    The entire left side of my foot and lower leg rolls and folds inward by itself. I have almost no sensation of that tripod stability in the musculature of my foot. my main point is that I’ve went on basically ignoring the lack of stability and still pushing through rigorous feet and ankle conditioning and strengthening. but even a year after the left Ridge (pinky bone to the heel) feels so weak and tender. I find myself putting more strain on my knee and hips because I can’t produce enough drive from my surgery foot. I am a cigarette/pot smoker and never fully stopped through the healing process. Is this the reason my surgery foot still feels weak and unstable?

    It was completely healed in those 4 weeks. Well, also with the side advice of Ayurvedic Dr. (Ancient Indian medicines) I also gave her natural calcium for 4 weeks.
    Like raw turmeric (looks like ginger) in warm milk in night, raw paneer and a pinch of limestone in powered form (choona) in curd in morning.

    I had one of these misdiagnosed as a sprain after a severe inversion injury without X-ray and was advised to walk it off by hospital staff at a very third world hospital where the doctor clearly knew nothing about foot anatomy. If it was in a cast it would have healed in 6 weeks. 4 months later it hasn't healed and the foot is a different shape. I'm using a budget electric massager to try to stimulate bone healing and now keeping off it as much as possible but doing exercises and massaging it. When I compare this to a prior injury to the other foot, the healing was dramatically faster because it was immobilised, I had crutches and I experienced no real pain. The minor remaining scar tissue was broken down after the injury healed. The modern idea of walking off an inversion injury is both painful and ridiculous unless you want to be left with a mangled franken foot and a lot of pain. A month of immobilisation is better than long term immobilisation when it doesn't heal. The pain of a fracture is no different to a torn ligament. It doesn't hurt as much as everyone says it will. It's just very annoying and relentless pain. If you don't have an X-ray and MRI you don't know what is going on. There could also be severed nerves, tendons and ligaments. Walking these off can leave you with a permanent disability.

A sports doctor finally diagnosed the fracture and organised a follow up X-ray. Fracture still visible but stuck with CRPS diagnosis. Back to wearing a rocker sole boot I got from salvation army for $10 which has dramatically reduced the CRPS but still have swelling at site of injury. Another friend had this injury for 12 years before rebreaking in the same spot and getting it treated properly the second time. There are few desk jobs in this town so I have been feeling a bit outcast in more ways than one. Just relieved to have less pain and dystonia.

    I found this video very informative. I got 3 fractures in my 5th Metatarsal. This is my 3rd month. This week my doctor told me the fractured have healed so I'm going so start therapy next week. Honestly that was the worst pain I have experience. My doctor said I could start wearing my sneakers but I tried to walk but is very painful so I still trying but with the help of the crutches cause the pain is so strong that I can't do it without crutches for now so I just want to start my therapy asap.

      Hi mr62686. So the vast majority of 5th metatarsal fractures do not require surgery. Usually a cast or a boot for 6-12 weeks. Every case is different though so best to discuss with your treating surgeon. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Hello docs! I have been diagnosed with an avulsion fracture today and my question is will the swelling disappear and would you recommend a short or tall boot? And can I use the boot without crutches? Watching this video has made me understand the words the doctor was using. Thanks!

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      Hi Oralys. All very good questions. Every case is a little different but generally speaking a short boot is sufficient for foot fractures. Using crutches is okay but not necessary. We tell our patients that if you can weight bear, you can use crutches for balance but that they are not necessary. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    I feel so much better after watching this video. I broke my foot a week ago, and we leave for vacation in just over a week from today. I've been resting it elevated since it was broken, and haven't put any weight on it at all in hopes that it will heal faster. I have been very worried that I'd have to spend my vacation in a wheelchair, but this video has given me reassurance & hope that I will be able to walk with my aircast/boot and do/see all the things that we were originally planning to do. (Nothing crazy of course, just museums & walking). I'm far less nervous for what my doctor will say when I return for a check-up before my trip.

    Doctors. I'm close to surgury(Friday, the 12th), and frankly my foot FEELS and LOOKS FINE! No Swelling, NO pain on palpation whatsoever. I can even put it in my regular loafers. But (she's not that aggressive) she is of the opinoin that now, nearly 8 weeks later, both radiographs are almost identical. From March 15 to April 26th. The break occurred on the 1st of March. She's not aggressive, but believes I'm wasting precious recovery time.
    she is adamant: "This is NOT going to make Union, Paul-" " I wish it were otherwise-"

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  7 лет назад

      Hi Paul. Your situation is somewhat unique in that you sound like you had an open wound in the area of the fracture site. If this happened at the time of the initial injury, many patients would go on to have surgery from the beginning to deal with the soft tissue and subsequently with the bone. Open fractures do have a higher incidence of infection and non union. It is not unreasonable that you are having second thoughts if you have no symptoms related to your foot however. The best recommendation is to discuss it with your surgeon before the day of surgery. Hopefully that helps

I have a boot at the moment and on wednesday i have an appointment with a specialist at the hospital. This has taught me a lot, i really dont want surgery. Its a zone 3 fracture right in the middle it looks quite bad. Do you think they will suggest surgery? Im an athlete but im happier to wait longer and take supplements rather than go through surgery

    This video helped alot thanks Docs!
    Fractured my 5th metatarsal (avulsion) running (shoe landed, ankle twisted, landed on it) and i feel like supplements help because i know my diet is good but isn't perfect and was actively running/lifting weights at least 4 days out of the week when this occured.
    After two and half weeks, the pain was down to the point ive stopped taking and weaning myself off the ipubrofen and i was actually able to bear some weight, but not enough to test my foot bearing all my weight off the crutches, I'm definitely not pushing it since i'm not in physical therapy. I couldn't even sit in the shower or toilet bearing weight the first few days, but after two and a half weeks i was actually able to get my shoe on and stand on it with minimal weight bearing pain, i only did this for a few seconds because i didnt wanna push it and def felt the fracture site with minimal pain.
    Not much pain, I was in the bed for two weeks (no work because i was supposed to be on vacation) with my foot wrapped elevated majority of this time and icing at least twice a day the first week. The first couple of days was pain and inflammation, but the 2nd week was weird because the inflammation was gone...but the fracture site and bone was very stiff and i felt ALOT of small pulses and tremors in both areas while my foot was elevated and resting. and now im in week 3 only wearing the air cast/moon boot traveling at work (still using the crutches) and though its slow, its healing. The boot actually brings me pain (due to thr weight of it and being a bit too small), but i threw a dr scholls foot cushion in it and definitely helped.
    I'm sticking to these supplements everyday. Calcium, vitamin D, Fish Oil, Osteo Bi Flex Triple Strength, GNC mega mens energy and metabolism. Every morning, whey protein shake with yogurt and whole almonds, sometimes a apple as well. Kinda flying blind here since i wasn't given much info besides given the name of the fracture and told i wouldnt be able to walk for another 6-8 weeks and def not running for 3-4 months.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 лет назад +1

      Hi james. So that is a lot of information. Balanced diet is the best approach. Typically our patients start weightbearing as soon as pain permits and get off crutches as soon as pain permits. Usually no running for 3-4 months sounds about right. Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for watching.

      Update for the docs and those wondering about heal time. So at 6 weeks, i forced myself to start walking on two crutches for a week, it hurt the tendons and ligaments in my foot from soreness and minimal fracture pain, foot was swollen and inflammed. At 7 weeks i went to one crutch, and felt the same amount of pain like i was in 6 weeks because im putting more weight on it, minimal to no fracture site pain, foot was partly inflammed most of it returning to regular color. Im two days into 8 weeks and i began walking with no crutches without the medical shoe and wow. I put a dr Scholl's athletic insole in one of my slip on arkk shoes and there was very minimal pain. I walked about 2 or 3 miles and my foot and leg was very sore,.my ankle was very wobbly too. I slept for a very long time when i came home (14 hours) and when i woke up a few hours later i went out again, i was definitely stronger but still soreness at the bottom of my foot. Little to no pain at fracture site. I wore compression socks and have been using the exogen 4000 since week 4. I use a roller on the bottom my foot every morning And it helps tremendously.

    just broke 5th metatarsal trail running coming down mountain. Turned foot inwards, heard crack so I limped down the rest of the way. Am now in boot, 5th day swelling subsiding now. Question is should I ice and alternate heat foot every day to aid healing or some combination thereof? I have always applied heat to injuries over the years once swelling has gone. Great Video, u two are a good combination, and a great comment section, a community of people with broken foot experiences and lots of real word feedback. Many thx in advance.....

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 лет назад

      Hi keltmon1. Thanks for the positive feedback. So ice or heat is a common question. So heat brings in blood supply which can aid in healing and sometimes relief - but can also increase swelling and throbbing. Ice, on the other hand, reduces blood suppy, freezes the nerves somewhat and helps reduce pain and swelling. Usually our advice is if you are going to use both, use the heat first. Good luck on your recovery and thanks for watching. Keep us posted.

I just went back in for my follow up (7 weeks) after complete non weight bearing (Jones fracture) and was told it was still broken. I was told I could weight bear as tolerated and just started doing that now. Is this typical that the fracture hasn’t healed. It’s non displaced. What is a realistic timeline? Hello docs! Thank you both for such an informative video! I am one week in to my 5th metatarsal oblique fracture which is 3 mm displaced through the mid to distal shaft. The first Ortho said no surgery, and I could walk on it in a boot, so I did that, but was concerned I was causing further injury. Second Ortho opinion was to get surgery and no weight bearing so I’ve been staying off of it mostly. Your video made me feel better about holding off on surgery but now I’m worried walking on it with a boot for 5 days harmed me. How common is it to damage the fracture further by boot walking? I had a 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture. My orthopedic surgeon kept my foot in a soft dressing for 4 weeks. I started to bear weight during the third week though he told me to do so after second week. After six weeks I started to lift weights to see how much weight my foot could bear. At 7 weeks I could stand on it with 56kg on my back. However, I have slight pain at 5-10 degree when heel lifts of floor. I've targeted it with isometrics. I hold my foot in that position until a bit of pain starts and hold it for 20-30 seconds. I can almost walk normally though a bit of pain persists. My ortho said sports after 12 weeks total.
    I want to continue to lift weights. I don't know if that's off limits or not. It helped my pain during week 6 but now when I'm nearing full recovery I'm getting chicken and wonder if I should lay off the weights or continue.

    I fractured my 5th metatarsal on Sept. 16, 2017. Today is 05/17/2018. The fracture now is a noticeable complete break with large gap space. I have been using a bone growth stimulator as of today for 102 treatments(30 minutes every morning). Its painful as he'll, I have to pause when I'm out shopping etc. Meaning it hurts so bad for instance when I go to Wal-Mart or any other place that requires a lot of walking. I have to stop and rest, because of the pain. So, it started as a fracture on 09/16/2017 and last xray taken on May 09, 2018 shows a complete break and total separation in area of the initial fracture. The gap is about a half inch. I go back to see the Orthopaedic sports doctor July 9, 2018. I am a Disabled Veteran, but allowed to see outside doctors. I have all the xrays dating back to 09/16/2017-05/09/2018. They clearly show the initial fracture to the point of actual break and separation gap now. What should I do. Its very painful, my doctor and I viewed his latest xray together in his office, and I voiced to him my concerns and limitations of mobility. Its been 8 months. Should I call doctor and insist that we go ahead and schedule corrective surgery or???????????? genehall1952@gmail.com

      Hi Gene. By definition your fracture has gone on to be what is considered a delayed union and possibly a non union. The longer the fracture goes without healing the higher the chance that it would not heal without doing something further - like surgery. Your symptoms should guide your treatment decisions with the guidance of your surgeon. Good luck.

    How many weeks does it take to heal 5th metatarsal zone 1????

    My husband broke his 5th metatarsal 30 years ago and now in his 50’s, when he pedals hard on his trainer, the foot from time to time will swell and feel broken. The top notch PCP today took an x-ray and said no break or fracture. Please help. Is it a stress fracture or something else?

      Hi Lynn. Hard to say if X-ray is normal. A CT scan could see more detail. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    5th metatarsal oblique fx- 6weeks out.
    How does walking on foot versus not walking on foot help heal fracture more quickly?
    Also, when I push on an a certain area of foot, I still feel pain. Does this mean that area(where pain is) is still non-unioned?
    Thanks!

    I just broke my foot, and will see the podiatrist on Thursday. I’m curious as to what they will do.

    Hi docs,
    I have a transverse facture of the proximal end of the proximal phalanx of the 5th toe on my right foot with minor varus deformity. So it is completely snapped and turned outwards I was just wondering if there is a video or advice on what surgery I need? Thankyou.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 лет назад

      Hi Leah. Often fractures of the toe do not require surgery. They sometimes can be reduced (or manipulated) back into place to make them more straight. Even if the bone heals slightly crooked this is often well tolerated with minimal functional impact. These are good questions to discuss with your treating doctor. Hope that helps. And thanks for watching.

    What is a malunion and how is it generally treated?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  Год назад

      So it means the bone has healed in a position other than it’s anatomical one. Sometimes it doesn’t matter. Sometimes you have to rebreak it and then realign it.

      We would likely say carefully for short periods of time. Depends on the fracture though. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    I broke my fifth metatarsal back in June 2023 and got surgery for it. I thought it was not a big deal after twisted it inside out playing soccer in my patio. A big ball appeared right after the incident and decided not to go to the doctor because I had tickets for Disneyland 😂. Anyways I went to Disneyland for two days taking ibuprofen and pain relievers. I came back went to ER and discovered my bone was broken. I wore the Skii boot for 2 months. I thought I was good to go back to work and my normal life. After 2 months I re fractured because my bone didn’t have union. End up having surgery because I didn’t take good care of the fracture.

    what treatment would be needed if you break two of your metatarsal bones? thanks x

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 года назад +1

      Hi Roxyyy. So usually it would require a cast or boot. Often for 6 weeks or so. And usually some weightbearing. Best to discuss with your surgeon though. Good luck! Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    • @TalkingWithDocs

      Hi Christmas Vibes. It is likely an ankle sprain especially if you can walk on it. If the pain continues you should see your doctor and get an xray to rule out a fracture. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.

    8 weeks
    58 days after my 5th metatarsal fracture.
    I still walk with a limp. I can ride a bike. I can go up and downstairs. It feels better. but it still is not healed. The doctor told me I can walk, there is no risk of "non-union" at this point. and I should go see the doctor after the 3 month mark for another xray.
    when I try to walk normal I feel uncomfortable. it scares me so I walk slowly on purpose.
    I started going to the gym today only doing machine exercises and avoiding squats, deadlift and any foot weight baring exercise as much as possible.
    I wonder if my foot will be back to normal to play sports after one month. I really hope so. The Paul and Brad say in this video 3-6 with full range of motion months to go back to sports.
    I really want to go hiking. but I am not sure I should. thank you so much for the video again.

      HI Mario. Thanks for sharing. Hang in there. Often the last bit of healing can be slow. Wait for the last xray before high impact activity. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing if you did.
