- Nokian Tyres is now fastest on ice both with an electric car and with a petrol-powered car! The new world record with E-RA (Electric RaceAbout) was set at 252.09 km/h on 17th of March 2012 on the ice of Lake Ukonjärvi in Inari, Finland. Petrol-powered ice driving record was already achieved by Nokian Tyres in March 2011.
Driver: Janne Laitinen, professional test driver for Nokian Tyres plc
Tyres: Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 (225/40R18)
Car: Electric RaceAbout, E-RA, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences
Measured average speed: 252.09 km/h (156.64 mph)
Measured peak speed: 260.06 km/h (161.59 mph)
More information about how the record test was carried out, the E-RA sports car and the Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 studded tyres that provided the relentless grip and stable handling for this extreme speed can be found from Nokian Tyres' website.

We were participating in Silvretta e-Auto in the Alps back in July. Now the car is under a major maintenance. We will hopefully come back with something later this year.
Great wideo, great drive...
Congratulations, good job and very nice video.
@meelis79 with proper ice types yes. The rolling resistance in ice is less, allowing to reach higher top speed. Else is pure horsepower and aerodynamic resistance. My s13 (180sx/200sx) has only a Cd of 0.27 if i remember correctly. And i'm talking about the ca18det engine. Sr20det might be able to go faster. And even not stock a minor increase in boost pressure with still the stock turbo will allow it to reach. And i'm sure that it cans since i hit 140mph in the highway(with less than 200hp)
Neat Video. Ironically the only winter tires I felt unsafe at speed with were Hakka R's on my 3 series wagon. Went back to Arctic Alpin 3's and the highway manners came back. The best high speed winter tires I have had were pirelli 210's on a Corrado.
The song is Stefano Bonacina - Release Your Spirit High
Thanks for the info
I "removed" (or drove too close to those orange traffic barrels, both sides) on my old slow Camery, and that increased my top end by 6km/hr. I then, because I was curious, removed the wipers, covered the grill, and put gaffers tape over the seams on the front of the car and got another 5 to 6 kph for about 11-12km/hr more top. It's a Camery 2 liter manual, so that's only 192km/hr or 120mph. I would love to drive this electric with or without mirrors.
RUclips channel ElectricRaceAbout. Has video from this event whitout music.
I want to know as well. I had goosebumps.
Hi!
No new stuff for a while now how things are going?
This car's engine has much more power and torque than your S13's engine.
Not to mention that rolling resistance of this kind of ice is MUCH higher than one of tarmac.
Actually rolling resistance is not any issue on flat ice, it's in same region than on tarmac.
I would like to know how many studs were lost making the record?
The car sound of an electrical car is not like any engine!! Compared to for example an high powered V8-V10-V12 engine on high rews...Only silence and some sounds from traction of the tyres on the ice.... Really nice and also a bit strange at the beginning.... Anders / Nokian Tyres Sweden
What song is this?
It's a wide net, wide enough to catch you.
STIMA !!! COMPLIMENTI...
You wouldn't actually hear anything except the wind and the ice.
The bugatti veryon, look at the documentaries about it. Note how much trouble they go into to cool it. it produces 3000 horsepower in reality from the gasoline, but only 1000 is converted to mechanical power, 2000 escape as heat. This means it needs titanium exhaust because steel would melt, and 12 radiators. 1000 horsepower of mechanical movement from an electric motor produces only about 50 horsepower of heat. This is just 1 reason electric will surpass gasoline before this decade is out.

look at the documentaries about the bugatti veryon. It produces three thousand horsepower from the gasoline but only one thousand is converted to mechanical power. Two thousand escape as heat. This means it needs 12 radiators. a thousand horsepower of mechanical movement from an electric motor produces only about fifty horsepower of heat. remove the mirrors, might give a little extra
hahaha..my s13 is 20 years old and does 250 stock...why can't you understand that batteries are not the way to do this
not spelt the same worldwide
On ice? Really?
nokian tires not tyres
it is tyres, its the brand name...
The tech will never be there, because people like you keep moving the target.
