Matt that was an amazing idea for the quill body, and a nice looking bug. I had surgery on my right index finger. So I can’t fish for ten days, the surgery went well thankfully. I can’t wait to get back to the DH streams 👍
Great tip using thread. Usually quills are a bit short for larger flies (size 10 or 12). I found that to keep quills from breaking, I soak them in a wet paper towel for a few hours before tying to keep them pliable. Always enjoy these videos and learn some great techniques.
Varnished...I think it might even fool people from a foot or two! LOL This is a worthy tip, Matt. Running out of quill...or breaking them constantly...can be a real bummer for new tyers.
That’s a great idea for quill bodies Matt. Thank you for sharing. Hope you have had a great season (or are still having). Looking forward to seeing more of your fine work as you see fit! Take care my friend.
Quite an effective technique with the thread. Well chosen. When I got into fly fishing in saltwater, there weren’t many books on saltwater patterns & Ken Bay’s pattern book was one of the few used ones available I could find. I didn’t even know he had freshwater books as well. 😅
Wow that is a totally different way of tying for me. Pretty cool looking when finished. That may take a few tries before I have something that I would want anyone to see it 😂. Thank you Matt nice video. Appreciate the new technique.
J Stockard fly of the month again. Great job Barry Ord Clark, I mean Matt. Awesome recognition for your contribution to the sport. Have a great weekend my friend, I’m off to Florida for a much needed vacation, so I may not post comments this week.
Hahaha! Thanks Chad. Have a safe trip, and do try to tune in Tuesday as I've got a great book review and giveaway. (I'm heading out of town myself so am making the video tonight.) Enjoy your vacation my friend!
Cool Matt! Who says there's a specific rule on tieing flies. Thread can definitely make a good body for a fly. You just proved that. Thanks 👍 tight lines. 👍.
Cool! Call it Fiddler's Finagle 😆Nice technique Matt, looks great to me no matter if the dark threads trailed the white. It does look like a stonefly nymph, in fact when some stoneflies molt and they're white for a short while until the new exoskeleton hardens. I've seen Chalie Craven do that abdomen technique with fluoro fiber and Barry Clarke do it with thread. The name Krom sounded familiar, maybe from Conan The Barbarian movies 🤔So I searched Charles, he was a great tier of hair wing salmon flies, even co-authored a book with Keith Fulsher on it. Matt, thanks for sharing these gems of techniques and great fly tiers with us. 🤓👍
That looks really good Matt! I’ve never tied a quill body, but like to know how to tie all flies! I’m sure perch and panfish would eat that like me eating Halloween candy. Thanks for the great tips on alternative ways to tie. Been busy, going to backtrack and watch last weeks video.👌 Have a wonderful weekend my friend. 🎣👍🪶
Cool beans Matt, looks great Charlie Craven does something like that but he uses super hair for his juju baetis nymph. I think yours would be great for larger flies Thanks for the video and tip Hope you have a great weekend, looks like rain here
Hi from Kansas City 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes Good looking fly!!!. Great tip on using colored thread's . I use coats&Clark outdoor uv resistant 100 0/0 polyester from Walmart. I keep a plastic bag of different colors in with my thread box. Red works well also. Hope all is good with you and your's thanks for another great video. 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes have a great 🦃 thanksgiving.
Good morning Matt. ☕️time. I have avoided tying flies requiring quill bodies because I’ve never had any quills on hand. This tip solves that. Now I can try some of the quill bodies I’ve been avoiding. In the back of my mind though I’m thinking how close will it perform in the water to one tied with actual quills as being more buoyant or less buoyant. Just thinking lol. Take care Matt. Have a great weekend. We are supposed to be under a winter storm warning so we won’t be wandering too far.
I do something lazier than that, I just wrap a darker thread or sharpie the white thread on the last wrap and wrap it like wire where I just space it to make it look like segments. I did use this method for a while though but it was a pain to keep the 4 strands from not crossing and it's another step that made it more difficult for me, and I'm pretty lazy and I tend to use lesser materials if I can. Nice fly sir. 👍
Ha! I hear you there Alex. I've done the same thing myself. I've gone over that trick in a pattern from C. Boyd Pfeiffer's "Simple Flies" not too long ago.
That's a good idea, especilaly when you tie a lot of the same pattern. Quick and easy.
Good Morning Sir Matt, good looking fly and the colors are awesome 👌. Very Cool 😎
Love it. Great technique. ThxMatt. Have a fabulous weekend.
Very nice Matt.

Awesome technique for using thread!! Sweet little fly!! Thanks for sharing Matt!!
With resin I would think more durable Mat. These rainbows here in nz will certainly test that theory.
Great pattern and thanks for sharing.
Excellent tip. I tie a Hendricks cripple that always frustrates me that I run out of quill before I want to. This should solve that problem.
I'll add this to my list of techniques to try. Thanks Matt.

Very cool technique. Think that could be used to vary bodies with several other materials.
Thanks Steven! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
Nice technique Matt, maybe some Softex to help hold the body.
Great idea Phil! I appreciate the note my friend. :-)
I hate tying with biots and quills. This might be the answer I've been looking for.
