I have actually seen few things that Jason does:
1) Pick
2) lot of bass
3) Power chord arpegios and 3rds, both major and minor
4) Instead od gallops full 16ths
5) Following drums more than guitars (after black album)
6) Heavy attack with pick
Also 7) bang your head a lot to help Lars keep time with his drumming

I like to remind people who talk bad about Jason that he was Metallica's bass player when they were at their peak, not Cliff or Rob, Jason. Great video!
If it weren't for Hetfield orbital ego and Lars' constant bitching about everything what's not his own instrument, Jason may have been remembered as a much more technical and well-rounded bass player to the community.
Its actually a really sad story how a humble, talented, but energetic guy gets trampled by two giant egoists.

Yes and no, on one side they could let Jason step more into creation process, on the other hand... is Bass, no ofense, but not even when Cliff was around Bass was the main instrument, there´s just so much you can do and writte on bass
@@antoniocenteno1483 you can write all sorts of things and not play them such as Bach. If you write chords and decide the structure of a song, you're creating. They wouldn't let him do that. Just come in, do your bass line, and leave.
Jason was the one who chose to announce that he was going to be doing side projects.....like hetfield said....metallica isnt the kind of band where people do side projects....they didnt want to have to deal with scheduling conflicts or half hearted membership.
Dont recall any great bands having guys go play in side bands in their prime.

The minor pentatonic use by him comes from huge influence of Geezer Butler. I think in Metallica he wasn't allowed that much creativity with the bass lines, check out the Load/Reload demos where Hetfield plays the bass parts, they are like 80% identical to what ended up on the album. There's also a segment of "Yeah and a Half in the Life of Metallica" outtakes where Jason is trying out a basslines for Enter Sandman with much more movement initially and Hetfield saying "nah, I don't like it". And Bob Rock is also seen saying "more space", so eventually the bass part in Enter Sandman was significantly simplified. Maybe working like that became a habit to him so he was in the same mode for Voivod? I love Jason but most of his bass solos live were kinda meh. At that time Metallica also had 10-minute drum segment as well as a 10-minute guitar solo section which were also boring, but they played like two and a half hour shows then, maybe others needed some rest during the solo sections. I suggest to check My Friend of Misery demo from recent re-release of the Black Album - some parts of it were re-purposed as guitar riffs in the final song. Which was surprising to me, since I always thought that he came up with only the intro riff. Same thing with Where the Wild Things Are.

I’m surprised you didn’t mention anything about Newsted’s brief tenure in his first thrash metal band, Flotsam & Jetsam. He was a songwriter for most of their debut album and wrote all of the lyrics. His bass playing was also pretty tight on it as well.

The bass riff in Metalshock is insane. He actually used this in his bass solo section during the Black Album tour but added Wah & distortion.

I found it odd you completely overlooked his time with Flotsam & Jetsam. Some of his riffs on Doomsday are insane and the guitars were following his bass as Jason wrote a large portion of the music!

The simple fact is that post-Burton Metallica didn't have room for another personality in the music, and so Jason was just an extension of James and Lars' egos.

You said nothing about his history in Flotsam & Jetsam. His work on Doomsday For The Deceiver was the reason he even had a chance to audition for Metallica.
He didn’t say anything about Voivod itself besides a mention, and he didn’t talk about Jason’s time with Ozzy Osbourne, his alternative rock project Echobrain, or his solo album as Newsted.
I love your channel and I tune in all the time but I feel like you're wrong about a lot of this. I've been studying Jason my entire life and there are some things you're taking for granted or skimming over. You're right about doubling of the rhythm guitar in the earlier stuff but in the past, when you've mentioned playing in the pocket as a feature on some bassists you kind of make it sound like pocket playing is a bug in Jason's playing. You never mentioned just how hard he attacks the strings. That can be heard in that Blackened clip you played. The strings growling and slapping off the fretboard. Other honorable mentions: double stops, octaves, legato, staccato, and slides. How do you skip over his work on Load where he used a fretless bass? The legato slides on Outlaw Torn, King Nothing, and others? Octave bouncing from the likes of Blackened and Cryin' Shame (EchoBrain). The man has worn many hats and has shadowed guitar greats like Hetfield and Piggy and managed not to step on their toes. He worked so they could shine. He's an excellent supporting player. Listen to Doomsday For The Deceiver by Flotsam for a truly unrestrained Jason. Rant over. Although I'm disappointed I look forward to your next video. P.S. I really enjoyed the one you did on Fat Mike. I learned a lot.
I agree. Plus he wrote Blackened (the main riff) so to say that "if a bassist is following a guitar, its then a guitar riff", well he wrote the riff, so its a bass riff.
Also his work with Flotsam and Jetsam was completely blown over. If im not mistaken he even wrote some stuff for them for one of their albums that came out a few years back even though he didnt play with them. Jasons attack on the strings, to your point, is one of the reasons he is so admired and is someone I want to emulate. He is a monster for sure.

When I first started listening to heavy music and started discovering different bands, it was Metallica with Newstead that was one of the coolest bands for me. Trujillo is of course a great musician, but it was with Newstead that Metallica was THE Metallica) And it's incredibly sad that now I won't be able to go to a concert of the Metallica that inspired me as a child. Now there is no Pantera, Slayer, or that Metallica from the 90s.
P.S. By the way, it was because of Jason that I switched to bass after 15 years of playing guitar and I get high from it)
he's the one who made little me want to become a bassist, back in high school (and earlier) I would download every live bootleg I could, and learn any solo he made. I even bought a wah and a fuzz and used them on my start pack instrument before buying a proper quality bass and amp...

Jason Newstead = Silent Warrior
Glad I found this video. Jason Newsted was phenomenal on the first Flotsam and Jetsam album. Also his work on And Justice for (Jason) All. That record sounds phenomenal after somebody enhanced the bass lines. Also no offense I believe Jason added a lot to Metallica especially in live setting. He doesn't have the natural talent and skill of Cliff Burton but Jason made up for it with his timing, worth ethic, tone and the fact he did NOT play anything too flashy. Just a solid in the pocket bassist.
According to Sadowsky, Jason ran a fairly low/medium-low action on his bass. He obviously picks hard-- there's a bit in "A Year and a Half In the Life Of Metallica" where he and Bob Rock talk about needing to set up a wall of foam in front of him so that the sound of his pick on the strings would stop drowning out the sound of what he was tracking.
He's commented elsewhere on how a good deal of his picking action comes from his arm/shoulder and elbow-- just watch any video of him playing, he is definitely pumping his entire arm much of the time.

One thing you def could have mentioned is his sheer speed in the first Flotsam album but it was still good. Itd be cool to have a video about Jo Bench or Les Claypool
I feel like jason don't have so mutch oportunity to shiny, cause of his melodic and harmonical approach to the bass. But metallica was not so experimental like in cliff era, and they need some one who can do more a punch bass, and I personaly like that, in expecial, the bass in "one"punch but also melodic!
Jason also played bass in a more traditional way, unlike Cliff who almost seemed to be like a second lead guitarist in some cases.

Jason was like the "Michael Anthony" of Metallica: SO important & vital to the fans, but utterly disrespected by his bandmates. I saw them during the Lollapalooza they headlined, & my eyes were on Jason the WHOLE time! His energy & enthusiasm was off the charts!

Its easy all you need is a all tube 300 svt classic with a 8×10 cabinet ampeg of course crank the gain on 10 bass treble mids to taste to get the natural distortion from the tubes. Then learn to play with a pick very well now you can sound like jason
i don’t think you do him justice to say that all he did was double the rhythm guitar parts as for a lot of his bass lines he differs the bass line from the rhythm guitar part such as the bassline for blackened (although you won’t be able to hear that on justice)
Pro tip if you want to sound like Jason:
1mm dunlop tiangle pick, 45-105 stainless strings, downpick everything as hard as you can:D

There best sounding record is the $5.98 EP. Rough, aggressive mix with a great and very audible bass tone. The band definitely lost something they've never been able to get back when he left.
Also, Hetfield's explanation about AJFA is a complete and total load of shit.

What about his heavy picking technique, using a 1mm tortex triangle the guy was so hard on his Bass and had the greatest right hand up there with David Ellefson,
Also his melodies came from his song writing ability, he wrote that riff to Blackened so actually, it was Hetfield following HIS parts also!
Getting his tone, his Basses his Ampeg amps all that combined with his heavy riffing style could have made a 30min video.

Nah I agree with Paul. Musically, in the studio, Jason didn’t contribute much to the Metallica sound. However, as a member and representative of the band, he was a titan.

The biggest Jason's mistake : to leave flotsam and jetsam !
Paul, I can see why this was a hard video to make. A lot of fan bias comes with a figure like Newsted. However, when you put the fandom aside and examine his bass work objectively, there’s not a lot to stand on aside from the fact that he was a very aggressive and tight player. But as creativity is concerned, its hard to highlight any impactful contributions beyond My Friend of Misery and the intro to Blackened.
It’s hard to make any contributions to a band when you have James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich in it. They should’ve renamed Metallica to “The James & Lars Show”. Even Kirk and Rob Trujillo still don’t get a chance to write a ton of songs compared to those two.
@@Kruegernator123 this is true. After Cliff passed, James and Lars pretty much took over the creative void Cliff left behind.
You can’t really blame Jason for not making a creative impact with his bass in songs considering after Cliff died, James and Lars basically had all the creative input and rarely let Jason make any kind of contributions. If James and Lars didn’t act like complete douche canoes towards Jason, we’d probably be able to see his full potential.

@@seeDerekNow That has always been an issue with Metallica. There was an interview with Jason about a few weeks ago, and he described Metallica as “the two-piece garage band” of James and Lars and I thought it was extremely accurate.
Dave Mustaine and even Cliff Burton himself often had disagreements with James and Lars over writing credits. I do think Cliff was a lot more assertive to have more input in the band.
In that same interview, Jason talked about on their No Life ‘Til Leather demo tape, Lars wrote in ink pen: “(turn down bass on amp)”. James and Lars had always had that in mind when mixing their albums, at least until the Black Album when Bob Rock taught them properly.
Flea, Cliff Burton, Geddy Lee, Claypool and that dude from Mudvayne are all killer bass players, I cant believe Les Claypool tried out for Metallica after Burton died thats crazy
Les was in the same class as Kirk at school, and used to buy weed off him. I think Metallica just called every bass player they knew.

The crap sound and no bass of ...And Justice for All was the beginning of the end for Metallica and me. After a couple of plays I sold the LP to a friend of mine, just crap, couldn't listen to it. I also feel pissed off about the lack of respect Jason received from James and Lars. Metallica would have had a more dynamic sound if Jason was given some freedom and support.

I do think he was quite biased in this video. He praised other bassists for doing the same, yet criticized Jason for doing it.

@@Owen-ne6pe I took another listen to Jason’s audition tape on the Damage Inc. tour. He was playing circles around James and the others; whether that be because the band was still grieving over Cliff or because they were drunk out of their minds, who knows?
Either way, Jason was an absolute beast. He even had the balls to play some improvised fills on the audition tracks, in his own way. He wasn’t copying Cliff and had no intention to.

I would rather sound like Jason Newstead of Flotsam and Jetsam.
Really dissapointing and totally undermining him, ignoring a decent catalogue of his work and even if he doesnt just copy the guitar lines, especially not live. And sometimes thats the thing to do, just to discredit him seems so.. meh. Hes way contributed more than rob trujillo imo who is even a better and more diverse player but is so held back in metallica, and still feels like the new guy or a hired gun despite being tenured the longest.

Adam Clayton. Unfortunately people think he sucks but that's only because u2 became very boring.
I know I'll get heat for this but, JN never really did anything of note musically either before or after Metallica. Let's be honest, Flotsom sucked and Ecobrain sucked... I liked the NEWSTED band's stuff but lets face it, it wasn't groundbreaking by any means. IMHO, JN should have stayed in Metallica where he at least added worth, instead of leaving for a band that didn't last six months and whose songs no one even remembers.
I think it was necessary for Jason to leave. Metallica wouldn’t let him do the things he wanted to do. I personally think Jason had the biggest balls to leave when he did. I don’t think Metallica would’ve lasted much longer if Jason didn’t.
Jason wanted them to take a year off and fix all of their personal problems too. Metallica did take the time to sort all of their baggage out and reform, but only AFTER Jason left, sadly.
Say what you want about Jason’s post-Metallica career, but he’s a lot happier now. He only does six shows a year now instead of hundreds. He’s relaxing and living life at his own pace instead of the management’s.
