- Quality spells quality Caterpillar. part one.............does any one build anything worth a tinkers dam anymore? never in my life have I had to finish machining a part from KAT

Your taking this hard aren't you? ya see Billy, the part of your brain that detects sarcasm and humor has been damaged from all that wacking off you been doing, if you don't stop your going to start going blind,
Now identify the areas of sarcasm and humor in the previous sentence's .
@mjm7187 perhaps Kurtis at CCE could make you some parts or Abomb 79.both highly sk8lled,not unlike you,Jeff.
@Jpaydirt" you're", darker sarcasm on my part. Lol thanks for your acknowledgement
Cat now it nothing like it was in the 60s 70s and 80s ,I dont care for new cat equipment as you already know the old machines are built to last.
The new engineering standard is " close is good enough " ......
And of course you didn't get a discount for those incomplete parts All Cat is trying to do is get the customers to buy new or remanufactured equipment Please keep posting the journeys cause you are keeping it real JEFF WINS 2024
Yes, die castings can be smooth enough such that the only spots needing secondary work would be removing the parting lines (where the two halves of the die meet). Eliminating incoming inspection of product(s) coming from outside vendors is an easy way to save money. Remember when ISO 9000/9001 was such a big deal? Companies like Cat were all over it. If their outside vendor was ISO certified, then incoming inspection could be cut of from the budget. Unfortunately, being ISO certified really didn’t mean you produced great products, it only meant that if you did make a bad part you had the process/documentation to trace it through the manufacturing process to see where the error was made. It was a very expensive ordeal for a manufacturer to get and maintain ISO certification. Probably why we don’t see as much about it now.
Thanks for the explanation
Duning Krueger suppliers/ manufacturing !
That's what you get for mocking Curtis from Cutting Edge. LOL!
With a half south african half pommy accent
The Man From NSW EX drifter Driver , Bird whisper , and all round good ozie Boy .
You don't know just how hard it made me laugh when Jeff made that screw up machining that part. I am a decent mechanic and like Jeff I have a lathe here for my own use that I use to get myself out of a bind from time to time. I also can't tell you how many times I have done things exactly like he did on that piece and had to fix my screw ups. Machinist I am not.
Quality Assurance was outsourced along with manufacturing of the part.
Hell Jeff,
I thought you sold that plane a few years back. Hated to see you have that machining mishap. Quality control is just a mere surface scratch to the rest of the issues regarding this country. And all for thee “all mighty dollar”. We are absolutely “doomed” as a country.
Sold one, I'm keeping this one, just need a gofundme to fix it LOL
@@Jpaydirt hahaha..! Are they like a boat, “2 best days of owning one, are the day you bought it, and the day you sold it”…?
its all about price how much can we sell it for how cheap can we buy it don't let quality get in the way and komatsu keeps growing
Curtis him wife and dog great people!!!! Love his channel!
Hey Jeff funny channel. Breadstick Ricky and The Boss!!! Just watch few see all the charioteers he plays! The guys good!
Jeff, I always enjoy your videos and have been watching for years. In 54 years of aircraft maintenance a few things have been learned. Parts are brand new ready to modify. Approved doesn't mean the part will fit or work, it only means it's approved. General Electric (GE) Good Enough. Teamwork means no one is responsible. How do you know pilots are in the room? They will tell you. You can always tell a pilot, but you can't tell them much. My favorite thing to say, I can fix that no matter what it costs.
A pilot is a farmer with his brains knocked out.
They have someone to check them Jeff, he's blind in one eye and can't see out of the other !
I was a field mechanic at a Cat dealer for 38 years to the day. I can tell you the deterioration in all areas breaks my heart from Peoria to end users of Cat products!
And now they are moving to TEXAS…
They have been steadily moving here for years one factory at time lol
@@rockingtbrand5450 headquarters and all from what I was reading
When manufacturing company looking for ways to lower the cost of production, Quality control is usually the first place they start with.
Paydirt you are correct when equipment manufacturers have shit parts, everything, it's not quality made or materials at all anymore, I would like to get all the equipment manufacturers engineers parts people or whatever in a room an ask, why do you make piss poor parts, they don't take there work seriously or something,!!!
Jeff I admire your attention to detail, clean work area, making shit new again, it's awesome, thanks for sharing ✊🤙💪👍🇺🇲🇺🇲 (Kurtis) is his name
The Corporations want you to buy new, not repair. New is designed to fail quicker to make you replace again and again, thereby giving them income. Keep on repairing your equipment Jeff. Up the Corporations ass with a wire brush. Jeff wins ;-)
Geof, CEE OZ is Kurtis, a great all rounder
His name is Curtis from CCE. Try putting a little cutting oil on the aluminum while taking the cut.
KNOCK 'EM OUT JEFF AND GRIFFY !
In my best William Shatner impression “KKhaaannn -- Nooooo‼️”
Kurtis from Cutting Edge Engineering has entered the chat!
Poor quality CAT parts for high quality CAT prices.
Thanks for the video. Always learn something. I appreciate your resourcefulness. Don’t like the finish, let me just machine it to make it work. Nice to see the old lathe working!! 👍🏼👍🏼
Curtis of Cutting Edge Engineering
Purchasing is now made up of people that have never been inside a factory, let alone see the inside of an engine. They are compensated on cost savings, not quality. Many move through jobs so fast that by the time the quality issue show up, they are on to a new job. The focus of purchasing management is all about low cost suppliers. Quality is a manufacturing problem for them to deal with. Engineers do their best to design and specify quality requirements, but then it is out of their hands.
You are correct 💯
Jeff, you cannot do proper machining until you get Mr. Griff a safety vest and have him attack some dog treats and toys, A griffy cam would be a help also.
If you aint making mistakes you aint learning
Our governor can move too. Not soon enough though. Precision equipment run by DEI hires. Robot customer service is another disgrace.
I'm restoring my 1959 IH utility tractor because I can't buy anything but Chinese junk today. It's better for me to refurbish original parts from the tractor junkyard than buy junk new parts. I totally understand where you're coming from.
DEI is responsible for alot of the crappy parts and services
You have heard the Neal Young song Piece of Crap, the bloke at the door told you as you went out that you had bought a piece of crap. Bit sad that is happening at Caterpillar, they had the best reputation once.
I actually have a friend in Mud Lake looking to buy a plane.
Jeff, I have a friend who worked a contract at the Yorktown, PA. Plant as a machinist. He was machining drive parts for mining trucks. The parts he was making at the time, tolerances were very tight and he would have many parts rejected by quality control.
Then he had a contract with Deere in Iowa. That as he told me was a whole different world. Their standard was .....good enough. He couldn't believe the dramatic difference in standards.
So, I'm wondering if the standard for farmed out parts is different than in house ? Thought I would share this. And yes, I agree the industry as a whole not headed in a good direction.
Stay well ...
if your ever worried about press fit .. make it nice . than tack tack! tig or hot wire! pretty un kool part quality?!
🤣 🤣 Yelling - Curtiss - Curtiss - Curtiss
What is shame high-dollar junk
When I started in the manufacturing industry your better adhere to specs or you didn’t have a job but today the attitude is fuck it ship it. Iss ok
Top dollar for junk.
and thats why your own country needs to make its own stuff.
@@DontDrinkTheFlavorAid Great point mate, same down here in Australia.
Cant make our own stuff because the labor middle men that produce zilch want 700 bucks an hour for hack employee’s to make garbage for insane priced crap
You need to measure in bananas!
Curtis
Jimmys world on YT will maybe buy the plane ,,,, Regards John
Kurtis is highly. Skilled.CCE is awesome.
Jeff
That’s what you do
“You Fix Stuff”
And you know things
You can take them jaws out on your lathe and flip them around so you can chuck up stuff like that
I have the other set of jaws, I was pissed and in a hurry and fucked it up
@@Jpaydirt I know how you feel when you spend hard earned money on parts that you have to make right when it should have came that way, been there done that and did not get a T-shirt
Still it made for great viewing though bro. Safe travels. Ken.
And you paid top dollar for that garbage. Now cat dozers are made in Brazil,France,China. But we made trillions today. Next year?
Back in the day cat were making parts and machines to a set standard they had ,,And that standard was high,,,,Now cat build everything to a budget,,And that budget is as small as they can get away with,,,Hence,,,,Now when they tender out a contract to an outside company,,,,,,,,,,,,Because cat no longer manufactures anything themselves ,,,,,,,,,,,The company who comes in with the lowest tender,,,Gets the contract,,,,,,And the only company's around now that can make something for penny's and still make a profit are Chinese ones,,,,,,,,,And the compleat lack of quality or craftsmanship is plain to see in 90 percent of there components,,,,,,Yet cat still expects you to pay insane prices for shite parts,,,,
~ JPAYDIRT ~ YOU AND I ARE ON THE VERY SAME PAGE ABOUT THE LITERAL K~RAP JUNK !!!
That fella down under can make anything better than new ,and I don't member his name 2😂
Kurtis, Karen and Homeless the dog.
That’s right, also Max at The Swan Valley Machine Shop in or near Perth in Western Australia. He can make anything. He is old school and often works in thou, Curtis doesn’t like working in ‘bananas’ as he calls it, he is metric only.
This kind of stuff is what happens when you dont get your ass kicked as a kid. All the respect and knowledge that a parent or grand parent gets lost. No reason at all that stuff cant be built right on home soil. Its starting to look like other countries are looking after us. . not to good
Uses old guys know. The stuff you buy now is junk still in the box. Good luck.
Bad luck must be in the stars. I finally ready to crank up the old truck I’ve been working on, had a new belt to put on before I cranked it. I bought a alternator a couple months ago and put on it and was just waiting on the belt for last. Well alternator had a six grove pulley and I need a 8 grove. But since I had to take alternator back to parts I thought I would load up all the brake drums, steering linkage, shocks, one fender, old welding machine, leaf springs was all about 1200 pounds from my truck and two of my brothers. My 2002 dually is almost mint and hate going to that junk pile because of possibly getting flat tires and it’s a shit hole. Well no flats but front simulator on right side hit a steel drum full of concrete tearing it all to hell. Trouble is their 16 inch 7 hole simulators. Try finding one or a set of them. Plenty of 4 , 8, 5 hole ones.
These type of parts from caterpillar they give you more than what you need in case of your balancers are wore out. shafts, grind-bore- adjust. How do they know what’s your part condition are? Maybe that’s all you needed? Was a bushing.
jeff the problem is kids today dont care about jobs i was tought to protect your job and do the best you can
Cutting edge engineering South Africa lol
Maybe Cat found out that with that little travel , and running under an oil deluge , that it'll run for a million and a half ( whatever hours that is ) miles , no matter what it looks like ,,, !
Ya the mold can be polished but the tool makers these days only know how to download the file and push the button to make the cnc run. Like all the other trades snot nosed kids don't what to do anything laborious. And the next time you machine alum. Use some k1 or diesel as lubricant and a round nose tool part be smooth
Theres extruded aluminum
We are settlers anymore no one wants to be accountable
I totally agree with you!
CEE his name is Kurtis lol
They want you to buy a new POS.

Should have just started with some tool steel and made your own. Lost foam casting, makes a good surface, make part from foam, make the surface really good, couple coats of thin plaster and pack it in sand.
Lost wax.
G'day Jeff,
I do love it when you fire up into a raving rant about poor quality parts .
I bet Kurtis & Karen from CEE are having a good laugh too.
Keep them coming ,
was a great vid .
Respect....!
Right on
No qc! Put you a big washer behind the part and it will stick out farther to machine.
I was mad and not thinking, just wanted it done. after I f ed up I knew why, I could of done it right if I'd of just calmed down and engaged my brain
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
Hello there!
When machining aluminum, WD40 helps with finish.
Kerosene. WD40 is mostly kero with some perfume in it as far as I can tell. That’s what it smells like when you heat it anyway. Diesel works better than WD40.
CCE did not post their weekly video this morning
They are taking a break this week from making a video, taking a well earned rest
Nice job! You can come and work for me!
I'd need to calm down so I could think about what I was doing first lol
Murphy's Law in Action...
Whos Murphy lol
@Jpaydirt Murphy is a wretched mongrel that pops up and causes grief every time you don't want him to. Meaning if it can go wrong it usually will.
It's not engineers that send the parts out to be manufactured it's accountants!
And there it is. Parts built to a price not to a spec. Enginers have no say over parts sourcing, they get dragged in when it all goes to shite. There will be no enginers looking after old products, they retired 20 years ago.
a hanger tour would be kool ur old man bust been a guy!
You took longer bitching about it than it took you to fix it, get over it and move on. I find it difficult to accept todays junk too but it aint gonna change. Be thankful you have the means to repair it.
should I close the doors fire everyone quit making videos and give you your money back?
Like drumpf, he likes the sound of his voice.
@@mjm7187 You know Billy there's other channels that might be more suited to your disposition, Like " I've got a low IQ" or "99 ways to get out of your parents house"
Fords new engineers would make it from plastic and say its all good with neck bent to view a iphone while swiping right on grinder than later that night go to a furriewannahumphump bar. Oh wait cat and ford have the same furries from the same furry engineering collage. The same collage that tossed the machinist hand book in the trash and started using locator dowel pins as woodruff keys. Don't go in the park at night by that collage unless ur in a rabbit costume and have KY

Specifically why I quit building transmissions. Parts are a joke anymore. Can’t build quality transmission with trash parts and keep a good reputation..
