Yes, die castings can be smooth enough such that the only spots needing secondary work would be removing the parting lines (where the two halves of the die meet). Eliminating incoming inspection of product(s) coming from outside vendors is an easy way to save money. Remember when ISO 9000/9001 was such a big deal? Companies like Cat were all over it. If their outside vendor was ISO certified, then incoming inspection could be cut of from the budget. Unfortunately, being ISO certified really didn’t mean you produced great products, it only meant that if you did make a bad part you had the process/documentation to trace it through the manufacturing process to see where the error was made. It was a very expensive ordeal for a manufacturer to get and maintain ISO certification. Probably why we don’t see as much about it now.

Jeff, I always enjoy your videos and have been watching for years. In 54 years of aircraft maintenance a few things have been learned. Parts are brand new ready to modify. Approved doesn't mean the part will fit or work, it only means it's approved. General Electric (GE) Good Enough. Teamwork means no one is responsible. How do you know pilots are in the room? They will tell you. You can always tell a pilot, but you can't tell them much. My favorite thing to say, I can fix that no matter what it costs.

Purchasing is now made up of people that have never been inside a factory, let alone see the inside of an engine. They are compensated on cost savings, not quality. Many move through jobs so fast that by the time the quality issue show up, they are on to a new job. The focus of purchasing management is all about low cost suppliers. Quality is a manufacturing problem for them to deal with. Engineers do their best to design and specify quality requirements, but then it is out of their hands.

Jeff, I have a friend who worked a contract at the Yorktown, PA. Plant as a machinist. He was machining drive parts for mining trucks. The parts he was making at the time, tolerances were very tight and he would have many parts rejected by quality control.
Then he had a contract with Deere in Iowa. That as he told me was a whole different world. Their standard was .....good enough. He couldn't believe the dramatic difference in standards.
So, I'm wondering if the standard for farmed out parts is different than in house ? Thought I would share this. And yes, I agree the industry as a whole not headed in a good direction.

Bad luck must be in the stars. I finally ready to crank up the old truck I’ve been working on, had a new belt to put on before I cranked it. I bought a alternator a couple months ago and put on it and was just waiting on the belt for last. Well alternator had a six grove pulley and I need a 8 grove. But since I had to take alternator back to parts I thought I would load up all the brake drums, steering linkage, shocks, one fender, old welding machine, leaf springs was all about 1200 pounds from my truck and two of my brothers. My 2002 dually is almost mint and hate going to that junk pile because of possibly getting flat tires and it’s a shit hole. Well no flats but front simulator on right side hit a steel drum full of concrete tearing it all to hell. Trouble is their 16 inch 7 hole simulators. Try finding one or a set of them. Plenty of 4 , 8, 5 hole ones.
