Thomas Sowell: The Poverty Empire

  • In this rare, exclusive Free To Choose Network video, Thomas Sowell asks politicians to look at the consequences (not intentions) of legislation designed to help the poor -- especially the black poor. His admonition still holds today. Why, because bills create incentives. And incentives matter.

      More whites listen to them, so are they being torn apart by rap music too? The problem isn't rap. The problem in the black community, and now white, is the lack of fathers in the home.

    • @rotntv

      @@afreedman4361 I'll agree and even go further, Eji - I feel the Rap culture is the antithesis to how black people should be linked with, and does nothing but harm in the eyes of every other culture to the possibilities and potential of black americans. Even though mostly white people listen to rap, there's an underlying link to "black culture" that is not real, and should not be automatically assumed when looking upon any black person, except for the fact that so many of us (yes, I'm half black, which in america just means "i'm a black guy" ) tend to welcome such attachment to that toxic culture of thug and gangster lifestyle, regardless of our environment. The reason for which I think is by far a result of fatherless homes, and having no strong male role model to bring up children correctly in the right direction. I don't mean to say that there is no such thing as Racism, as I personally have dealt with plenty of that in my lifetime, but it did not stop me from getting to where I am in life. My father was a strong man (RIP) who was extremely educated, and very positive about life and communication with people. I was raised to cherish intelligence, experience, love, family, and friends. Had he not been there, who would I have looked to for guidance in a harsh world that "seemingly" treats me as an enemy? False idols, likely. It's a shame that Thomas Sowell is not on Nike commercials, and is not glorified by the media as the true type of person young black people in fatherless (or low quality father) homes should aspire to instead of the Rap moguls and sports stars that have very little to contribute to the progress of our society.

      @@afreedman4361 i dont think the problem is rap. I think the problem in the black community is as you mentioned a lack of fathers in homes aswell as these successful individuals such as Jay Z and Snoop Dog, they've generated a ton of wealth and are idolized for their success and thus people believe their views, no matter how skewed. I think the problem with whites is as you mentioned lack of fathers, but also so many whites have become weak self loathing individuals that are willing to do anything to score brownie points on the social justice ladder, even if that means self humiliation and throwing away their own belief system. They will listen to rap or individuals like Jay Z that rag on whites and love it. How can one benefit society if one has no self respect.

    The best facts are from Chile, from 1973-1990. Free market reform increased GDP, without a doubt, to the highest in all of Latin America. Chicago economics worked undeniable there. Free market by 90' had 45% of the total population below the poverty line. What the evidence shows is that Free market reform works in an austere environment. The apogee of GDP had half in poverty. Society was able to ameliorate the poor with social programs, and increased min wage laws. Facts speak for them self

    I believe most poor blacks (and poor people in general) in inner cities have the individual choice to do what they want with their life, the difference is what they see as important. The man that chooses to sell drugs, drop out of school, and have seven children with seven different women knows very well where his choices will take him. His success in academia is of no importance to him, nor is the accruement of generational wealth for his his children. He has a completely different set of priorities.

    If I were to rewrite the Constitution and Bill of Rights today, I would make an Amendment prohibiting the federal government from making any laws that benefits or punishes any single group of people that can be distinguished based on race, religion, gender, INCOME level, AGE, health, political idiology, etc DIRECTLY. Key word being directly. So for instance, the federal gvmnt would not be allowed to create a social security, but they WOULD be allowed to subsitize a organization for that purpose.

    @AndroidPolitician In Canada for example lots of people go bankrupt for reason related to waiting for health care. One example is addiction to pain killers. I saw this first hand in Nova Scotia where in rural communities with poor acess to health care normal people lose everything when they become pain killer addicts.
    Another example is having to live, wait and recover away from home and work because maybe one or two cities have the care. This in not reflected in the medical financial loss #s

    "the most prosperous"
    Incorrect, the most prosperous period occurred during the market revolution of the 19th century. Food production increased dramatically, allowing a bigger portion of our population to live as something other than farmers for the first time.
    It allowed women to find jobs outside the home, it allowed life expectancy to increase by over 10 years, it allowed our population to more than double.
    Post-WWII was prosperous, but that was despite policy, not because of it.

    hhn1000 Thomas Sowell is known in the black community and does inspire where he chooses to speak. In my lifetime, he has not chosen to speak his message to those he could have inspired most directly, the black community. He has to stand in front of the Black people to tell the message, not mainly white audiences.

    • @BigBossIsBack
      @BigBossIsBack 10 лет назад +13

      unfortunately the problem is that a lot of black people don't want to hear his message. they prefer the other narrative where blacks are victims of institutional discrimination and private racism. they want someone else to stand accountable for their shortcomings and put it in the hands of government to help them get ahead.

    • @Buzz_Kill71
      @Buzz_Kill71 9 лет назад +1

      billybagbom But Sowell IS a media darling. A simple search of his name shows his youtube and other social media presence to be stronger now than he ever was in Traditional media. Yet! Those interviews and lectures are I. Front of largely white, conservative audiences. Now observe Rand Paul. He actually requested to speak to the three or four top black organizations/caucuses and simply held firm to those items in his platform that he holds dear and held open useful dialogue on those items we may have common ground on ( constitutional rights, mass incarceration of black and Hispanic men and government spying) Sowell is more like your old school white guy "where is Jessie and Al? This is all Obama's fault! What about black on black crime? Liberalism is a disease....What's wrong with the blacks?" He has some useful philosophy and writings, but no person of melonated origin cares when the speaker is not really talk to them or considering the points he is making from both sides. I get it he is not running for office! But the assumption that the media does not like him is to say there is only liberal slanted media, and I don't believe that to be true.

    • @billybagbom
      @billybagbom 9 лет назад

      Frank Carter Oh, no, of course there is conservative-slanted media. AM talk radio (partly because conservatives are more entertaining, and we're talking about the free market), and FoxNews (which is The Conservative Mainstream Network. Period.) If you're talking New Media, well, yeah -- Sowell may have a leg up there, since the New Media is more democratic and less elitist. That's -- that's about it. Remember the Robert Bork Senate hearings? Remember Sowell's part in that sordid affair? That episode should refresh your memory on where elite media power was concentrated -- and still is.

    @AndroidPolitician US women age 40 to 64, 87% of those with insurance had a mammogram within 5 years.
    The rate for Canadian women was 65% - the same as for uninsured women in the US.
    Canadian women also had the same rate of screening for cervical cancer as uninsured US women (80%), over five years. Among insured US women, the rate was 92%.
    Among uninsured US men, 31% were screened for prostate cancer, compared with 16% of Canadian men. For insured US men, the rate was 52%.

I would be interested in knowing what you think about the system in Singapore.

You can't do that here in the US either though if you don't have the money for it.If by "better" you mean "you don't have to pay out of pocket", then I'd have to argue that it's not better for me because I have the means to pay my own way and I thank God for that.

    @AndroidPolitician 1. Obviously you didn't read the refutation. They interviewed uninsured patients only once, and if they died years later, they assumed they were still uninsured. #FAIL. They also didn't survey those older than 65
