Just found this video, worked in Joburg, lived in Hillbrow from 1970 to 75, every saturday night we would party up the tower, great memories, would like to go back.
My grandmother used to work there right next to the Carlton Hotel at a building of some sorts... It was a bank office building.. Back in like the 1970's... Now she is retired and living in Bethal with my grandfather.
I used live here during the 90s. Not much has changed, for the better at least. I hope one day I'm at a place in life where I can help the city grow out of this awful stage.
My partner and I traveled back to SA in 2016 as well. Joburg was our first stop. He is from SA born and bred. I was gobsmacked by the size of the city. Please tell me what year this was taken. Certainly not recently. Carlton Hotel I am sure was not open in recent years. I am not aware of a single operating hotel in the CBD of Jo'burg that could be classed 4 Star. The passengers in this vehicle are from North of England. Don't be fooled CBD not safe for people of pale skin even day time. It is not a shame , it is a disgrace. I first saw Jo'burg in 1966, people went to Majectic Cinama in evening dress. If it was still in business you would need a military Escort should you want to visit these days.
Per title, 2016, Carlton Hotel was closed and empty when we visited. In fact all hotels in central Joburg were closed due security issues. The shopping centre below Carlton hotel was apparently open. You are right, I'm from Manchester. I lived and worked in Joburg and really loved the city and RSA with great memories. So sad to see the high levels of crime and corruption. I had visited with a view of retiring there, however, concluded my retirement would be very short! Thks for your comments, really appreciated
@@JahDestiny hi Peter, Thank you. Picked up accent same place. I left 1964 , lived in Jo'burg before moving to East London got married to South African Girl. We moved to Malawi for 11 years before coming back to RSA. I never expected to see the drastic changes over the last few years . Parts of Jo'burg a hell hole and crime out of control. Murder of Farmers in horrific ways. I love Africa have 2 sons & 5 grandchildren , worry about their future. I own my own Engineering business and both boys work in the business. The old Jo'burg was a great place, world class and very safe. Hillbrow had excellent Night clubs , now filled with drug dealers, thugs and prostitutes not a place to go even with armed escorts. Thanks for response. Keep Safe & God Bless.
When the European arrive and build a unique and different structure and enjoy and the blacks came everything is destroyed and left what the heck🥺🥺🥺🥺 south africa is the only county in whole Africa that looks like new York or even Melbourne . That is because it buil by whites ❤️
@@hasanx4637 This city has been dragged down into shithole status. Whites choose not to live in poop heaps - that doesn't make them racist. Calling them that appears to be just your tired old excuse for excusing the trashing of everthing you touch.
Lukáš Krátký Says a lot about the so-called European superior sense of running things and organisation. Anyway, give me Gaborone, Kigali ,...over Croydon, anytime!
Any violence is not likely to occur unless you go into a township where crime is rife. Discrimination happens to all groups of South Africans whether you are black, white, coloured, etc., but these prejudices that people have about each other are not acted out upon. Just be careful to have car doors locked and not have valuables in sight. There are a lot of poor marginalized people here and people may take the opportunity to steal anything in easy sight. You do not need a gun on any tour. That would just be silly. This isn't the US and it's not a war zone! Especially if you're a tourist, you are not going to be visiting any gang territory.
With so much good to see in South Africa as natural parks, beaches, and beautiful scenery why you waste time to visit one city like so many others in North America or South America?.
lol look at how much its deteriorated in a year ruclips.net/video/LNMaUy09YRg/видео.html This video is biased as hell, they drove through the best sections while the paint was still drying
Peter. People always say, the city is dangerous to walk around to the visitors. It what the tourist agency say also to charge you for it. In any place you can die or have problems. I have been visited alone, Australia, Italy, Estados Unidos, Spain, United Kingdom, Cuba and now for what I see about South Africa I going to go as well with friends or by myself. Believe me is the unique way to enjoy the country, feeling the heat of people, and not a taxi driver. Only try to not take video camera with u or jewels, uses smart phone to take a picture o video. Take care.
Thks for this and fully agree with you. However, there are many places where caution is needed. I have traveled extensively and always listen to advice from local people. Several locals said that Joburg was unsafe for us to walk round by ourselves in the day and definitely a no go area at night, hence this is why we used a tour company. Nothing would have given me more pleasure than to walk round Joburg by ourselves experiencing the city like I did when I lived there. I love South Africa and had no issues with walking round Cape Town etc. The places you mentioned; I have walked round all without hesitation.
So sad to see dirty streets, broken buildings, drug dealers hanging on street corners, trash everywhere ,what a disgusting mess from what it used to be like , soon it will be like Mogadishu with warlords and Ak 47s
This place doesn't need traffic lights any more. Jaywalking and hanging out right in the middle of the street is just incredible.

@@JahDestiny hi Peter,
Thank you.
That is because it buil by whites ❤️
miss u south africa,
Asghar ali khan its gone thanks yo the blacks
Stupid question, " do peaple still live in the city"
So sad to see how terrible it looks now...
stfu it looks just like any other city. you just hate to see free black people in an African city with few whites. say what you really mean, racist.
It's not racist. The city is a shithole. Source? I was down there a week ago. The downtown core is a mess now
another racist. People can look at the video and judge for themselves. You racists whites give most South Africans a bad name. always negative energy.
@@hasanx4637 This city has been dragged down into shithole status. Whites choose not to live in poop heaps - that doesn't make them racist. Calling them that appears to be just your tired old excuse for excusing the trashing of everthing you touch.
@@hasanx4637 More rubbish from an airhead.
i love my city go johannesburg all cities in the world have crime i love you joze
Mad Zulu cm es bonito?
All this hoo ha drama! Don't believe it people, buildings are deserted or run-down even here in London or around the UK,just visit Croydon!
Thats may be because London looks now rather like african than european Town.
Lukáš Krátký Says a lot about the so-called European superior sense of running things and organisation. Anyway, give me Gaborone, Kigali ,...over Croydon, anytime!
Honestly i suggest cape town more
look like any American city
Great vid.
Hi, I am going to JoBurg soon, is there a lot of discrimination against white people? Did your tour guide carry a gun? How safe is it at night?
Any violence is not likely to occur unless you go into a township where crime is rife. Discrimination happens to all groups of South Africans whether you are black, white, coloured, etc., but these prejudices that people have about each other are not acted out upon. Just be careful to have car doors locked and not have valuables in sight. There are a lot of poor marginalized people here and people may take the opportunity to steal anything in easy sight. You do not need a gun on any tour. That would just be silly. This isn't the US and it's not a war zone! Especially if you're a tourist, you are not going to be visiting any gang territory.
.
With so much good to see in South Africa as natural parks, beaches, and beautiful scenery why you waste time to visit one city like so many others in North America or South America?.
Yes, Whites, Indians and Chinese get quite a lot of discrimination against blacks. Stay in white neighborhoods is my advice, much more safe.
Yes, but if the foreigner needs to go to the consulate of his country like I needed to go, how do? Does he hire a security guard armed to the teeth?
waouuuh Johannesburg
jozi my city viva izwe lethu
lol look at how much its deteriorated in a year ruclips.net/video/LNMaUy09YRg/видео.html
This video is biased as hell, they drove through the best sections while the paint was still drying
Hillbrow 😬🙈
I think for the rest of my life I will never go back to jhb is a real sheet now black South Africans shame on u
So Maboneng's Johnathan Liebmann is "the white people"? *LOL*
Guess one has to sing for one's supper as a tour guide!
look similar to Melbourne
plan to travel here but have to change my mind after watching this vid

So sad to see dirty streets, broken buildings, drug dealers hanging on street corners, trash everywhere ,what a disgusting mess from what it used to be like , soon it will be like Mogadishu with warlords and Ak 47s
Filthy city that.
