Drive through liquor stores were designed so that heavy loads, like ice bags, can be placed in the carboot by the (stronger) employees and bulk purchases can easily be made in minimal time! Don't drink while driving! The "Queen's" Birthday is not just a celebration of the/a birthday, or an excuse for a holiday, it includes the creation of a list of some special Australians who have been recognised and honoured by the Royal Family with awards!

we have drive through bottle-o's because it is easier to get 4 cartons of beer dropped straight into the boot/tray than it is to buy them in store and then try and deal with wheeling them in shopping trolley with bent wheels and to stop it rolling down the hill while you transfer them into the vehicle

Queens birthday was never for Elizabeth II. It was for Adelaide, William IV's consort in the 1830's ( The city in South Australia was named after her) .... no idea why we hung on to
that colonial leftover for so long ?

Our fuel prices have been cycling for decades. In the past, they would drop gradually by around 10c per litre over a period of about a week, then jump back up and the cycle would repeat. Way back in those days, Tuesday would be the day to fill up. Over the years, the period extended and the jump got larger as a consequence. These days, he period can be over a month and the jump 40c per litre. The other thing to remember is that when the jump was 10c, the cost per litre was a lot less. This fluctuation is focused on petrol more than diesel and LPG.
Fruit and vegetable prices fluctuate not only based on seasons but also natural disasters. Some years ago, a cyclone all but wiped out the banana crops in Queensland and prices went sky high. Also, with two dominant and powerful supermarket chains, there are genuine questions being asked about their practices concerning their payment to farmers and what they charge. A government investigation was announced today into their practices.
One anomaly they didn’t mention that could also be behind drive through bottle shops is the price of beer or more specifically, the premium paid for small quantities. The most common way to buy it is in a box of 24 “stubbies” (13oz or 375mL bottles) or shrink wrapped packages of 24 similarly sized cans. It generally costs around $50 but varies based on the brand. You’d think that a six pack would cost around 1/4 of the price or $12.50, but you’d be wrong. You can easily end up paying well over $20 for that six pack, so I doubt many would buy it that way. A “slab” of 24 cans or stubbies is not something you’d tuck under your arm with your ordinary shopping, so being able to have it directly loaded into you car along with bags of ice is an advantage.
Licensing laws do vary state to state but are fairly consistent.put simply, a shop needs to be licensed to sell alcohol.you can buy it at the supermarket but it’s not on the shelves along with the breakfast cereal. They will often have a seperate area off to the side where it is sold. Licensing laws dictate when alcohol can be sold which may not coincide with ordinary supermarket hours. Having a separate area makes it easy to close off alcohol sales while allowing the rest of the supermarket to trade.
“Yeah-nah” is a broad Australian accent phrase that is regional..You’ll find it in places like Queensland more than Victoria. I always interpreted it as “Yeah, I understand what you are saying but nah ”.

Being a Queenslander too, I'll bust a few of these open - Fluctuating prices, specifically fuel, 30 to 40 cents, that amount up or down, generally up in a 24 hour period is extremely rare and only occurs when conflicts are affecting our fuel supply, because it's a good excuse for these companies to gouge a bit more money out of ya. Drive thru bottle-Os, it's great if it's a Friday arvo, you've picked the kids up from school or whatever and it's easier to go through there if you're having friends over for drinks or something and for tradies who don't want to leave their tools openly available for theft while they're in browsing for drinks, it's a great idea. Licencing laws, I'm pretty sure in majority of States the only 'supermarket' that you can purchase alcohol actually in the store is Aldi and even that is a separate little spot. With the big 2 coles and woollies they are associated or owned by are BWS and Liquoraland or something, which are not in store but generally attached next to. You can purchase wine/beer from most supermarkets but it's 0% alcohol. On Good Friday and Xmas Day, they don't make it harder, they just don't open or have very limited hours on those 'holy' days, because everyone wants to be home with family or friends, be prepared and don't expect people to work to serve your convenience on a public holiday because you forgot the wine, simple.

I do feel like we’re a bit of a different lot here in QLD… we know that on on public holidays things are going to be closed or open late so we just get things done before. I mean who wants to go out shopping on Easter or Christmas anyway? And I’m definitely one to do the first choice/ Dan Murphs Google before going to the bottle-o. I saved $6 on a six pack on doing that the other week. We don’t have the bother to stuff around here. Convenience all the way! Or laziness lol. Literally wanted to dye my couch covers the other day but Kmart was in one direction and spotlight was in the other… decided I needed to tie those purchases into a trip in that direction 😅 might take me longer to get it done, but at least I wasn’t doing the old layland brothers across the city

An extra point to remember is that the price of fuel, Aussie: petrol, US: gas, in Australia is quoted as cents per litre while in the US it is cents per gallon. A gallon is roughly four times the size of a litre, so for comparison multiply any quoted Aussie price fluctuation by about four for a better comparison.
Australia exports somewhere between 30 to 70% of the fresh food like vegetables and fruit it produces on farms to mostly Asian markets, often by refrigerated air transport to supply the very freshest produce. Therefore it might seem weird that the retail prices in Australia of fresh food can fluctuate so much in the supermarkets from season to season and even from daily weather conditions like rain, floods or heatwaves. The reality is that Australian fresh food produce demands such a premium in most of the Asian markets that that market is almost always satisfied before the local market as far as premium produce is concerned. Therefore the local market more keenly feels the sometimes large fluctuations in prices because of supply and demand, temporary or seasonal oversupply or undersupply in the market because the export market is financially a more important market for producers and distributors than the local market because of the premiums it is willing to pay. Something similar happens with our seafood and even beef, pork and mutton products. Most ordinary Australians rarely get the chance to buy the premium quality seafood products that this country produces as it is mostly exported or if sold locally goes to top end restaurants and such, but even the lower quality produce usually available are of much better quality than what most other nations can offer their people.
So everyone that is not an Aussie might have a giggle about "thongs" but another popular Aussie name for such footwear is "pluggers". Make of that what you want.
The popularity and concept of a bottle-o in Aussie culture probably goes back to around the time of 6 o'clock closing for pubs and such. Also only pubs and a relatively small number of other licenced establishments could back then, and in most Aussie states still now, sell alcoholic drinks and beverages. So to cater for the sudden rush of patrons leaving but still needing takeaways it must have seemed reasonable and logical to have them seated in their cars collecting from a drive-through mostly adjacent to the pub itself. This concept is actually very similar to how most fast food outlets function.

Qld calls the 1st Monday in October ‘Queen’s (King’s) Birthday because they celebrate Labour Day in May. Most states celebrate Labour Day in October… it commemorates the declaration of the 8hour day (8 hours work, 8 hours rest, 8 hours play) won by the Stonemasons in Australia in the 1880s. First place in the world to do so. Most states have the monarch’s birthday on 2nd Monday in June. It is also the official start of the Australian ski season which ends on Labour Day in October.

Steer clear of supermarket "fresh" produce as much as possible as they chill &/or freeze a great deal of theirs.Fruit & veg shops are better as they have to turn stock over quicker. The 2 major supermarkets own liquor chains & often have outlets under the same roof, hence booze is available. As a 73yr old I have never said "yeah, nah".

In Perth WA. Our petrol prices are at their highest on a Wednesday and drop throughout the week , tuesdays cheapest . Good Friday and Christmas day are the only days Pubs shut . No public holiday surcharge on normal stuff just if you're eating out . All states make their own decisions on Public holidays, each have at least 10 paid public holidays off per year . This isnt part of the annual 20 days off ( full pay with a 17.5 % loading ). As for food prices they vary as we produce /grow our own so if its not in season you have to pay more . Makes sense to eat food fresh when its in season .

It also depends on cyclones destroying regions with banana trees, and floods or fires or droughts or frosts or the occasional rodent or locust plague destroying or degrading other crop growing regions throughout the various widespread and varied agricultural terrain regions. Theer is also a widespread regular climate difference within many growing regions and some have their own natural disasters that visit them on a repeated but infrequent basis.

Queen or Kings birthday is setup so that the government doesnt need to change the date when there is a change in head of state (ie. King or Queen). Back when Australia was colonised the date changed too frequently so now its a set date just depends on which state you live in. The queen's birthday was in April and the now Kings birthday is in November and this is one less thing that needs to be updated since there is so many things that need to be changed when a new person occupies the throne.

The only places you can't have alcohol is in Aboriginal communities where they have brought in the rules to protect their communities, yes the reason we have a public holiday is because Australians will have a public holiday for anything, even the day Australia won the Americans cup and our Prime Minister said that any boss who sacked an employee for not going to work today is a bum.

The so-called Queen's Birthday holiday was not originally for Queen Elizabeth, there were public holidays gazetted for the reigning monarch long before Elizabeth was queen and they would have originally been a King's Birthday holiday, although it might even go as far back as Queen Victoria as a Queen's Birthday or maybe even before that to some other previous King. Not sure that anyone really knows anymore, or even cares. Someone at sometime in one or other of the states or colonies thought it might be a good idea to proclaim a public holiday for the people there, and because they just needed a excuse for a day off work and for something to drink to or celebrate, that day was nominally named in honour of the reigning monarch, whoever he or she was, so many toasts was thus made on that day to such monarch, to celebrate their continued good health, best wishes on another year and therefore another birthday or whatever. After a few more sherbets did it really matter any more what was being celebrated. Some states just happened to decide on different dates to other states to celebrate just because those days just happened to be better days to celebrate than those days chosen in other states. Even during Queen Elizabeth's reign, which was a long one, Queensland changed the day of the year to celebrate her nominal birthday at least a couple of times. Maybe the other states also changed their dates around, don't know, don't care. But with the new king there has been no official word on changing any of the public holiday dates although the name has been changed to the King's Birthday. None of the present public holiday dates are even close to King Charles' actual birthday, but he probably doesn't care about that and we certainly don't.

For me as an Aussie I interpret "yeah-nah" a bit differently. The "yeah" signals that I understand your question and/or opinion or statement but "nah" means I don't agree or will not concur or accept as fact, etc. "Nah-yeah" on the other hand, the "nah" means I don't fully understand where you are coming from or trying to get to with this conversation but "yeah" means you might be onto something so tell me more. Thus other variations like "nah-nah" means you have lost me with that statement or question, and I am losing interest fast, if it has not already gone. And "yeah-yeah" indicates an agreement in principle or fact, and keen as mustard to hear more, or contribute to the conversation or project. Maybe others might disagree with the above but I have probably been standing on Australian soil for much longer than most of your viewers and that is how I have always interpreted and used such terms.

I just love listening to immigrants react to things that they find strange about their adopted country. They always start with a disclaimer but until they stop whinging and adopt the laid-back lifestyle that is inherent in Australia, they will not find anything to post. Life in Australia follows a pure sine wave. We don't whinge about it because we mostly don't even notice. 🦘
