  • Monkey Menace is the common phrase that is synonymous with the escalating human
    - monkey conflict issue that’s at large in India. This film explores the unique urban rift that exists between Delhi’s Rhesus Macaques and citizens with all the metaphors that this symbolises. Javier Douglas's keen observational camerawork takes the viewer into a world that’s never been seen before. what it’s like to be a Rhesus Macaque living in one of the most polluted and populous megacities in the world. India's first female primatologist Dr. Iqbal Malik is the film's chief storyteller. She's been battling against the government for 30 years for the better welfare of monkeys. Her quest uncovers dark dealings that will shock the viewers.

Not once did I hear about a spay/neuter program to control the monkey population...I know they do it for the stray dogs. Wouldn't that be more effective than sanctuaries.

She’s the only primatologist I believe around, which means they wouldn’t have anyone who knows the anatomy of them, or how to do it. They didn’t want to spend the money either to do it, bc thieves were pocketing it. It’s crazy, man. I believe they did find a way to sterilize them, but I don’t think it was in India. Don’t quote, though, I think it was Indonesia or Cambodia.

I heard last year that was talked about, but the government did not want to spend the money on it. Part of the problem is all these ppl kidnapping the newborn babies, then instead of keeping them or taking them back where they came from, they dump them off in random places, so humans are spreading them across different locations cuz they want to get rid of them when they are not young cute babies anymore

Other urban areas dealing with primate populations have used various birth control techniques, like hormones in water sources, for example, with varying degrees of success. I don’t think many used physical sterilization, as it involves much more intensive intervention and specialized veterinary training, and is much more expensive, even though it is a more permanent solution. These are generally poorer areas that are dealing with the primates encroaching into human habitations. I remember the person from the monkeyscare company said that he proudly monkey-proofed the ministers’ homes, but never mentioned the poorer areas.

I cannot believe more people have not watched this video. It is a great documentary that shows the real issues with monkeys and people living together. It is sad that someone wants to put money in their pocket and it affects everyone in the city including the monkeys in a negative way. The only way to do anything is to do it right the first time. Cutting corners trying to pocket money only ends up creating more of an issue and ends up being more costly! Very good video I will share! Thank you!

That is true however you can't judge other countries until you yourself have traveled there and experienced what being poor really is. Living in America I've seen homeless people, addicts, stray animals, nothing compared to overseas. I thought the long flight was the worst part but nah, the food isn't that great. Meat isn't fresh like in the US because they don't have a freezer to keep the meat cool. When I went to most restaurants, you eat on a small table and small chairs with no air conditioner. You get upset stomach daily until your stomach adjust to the cheap food. You start craving basic food from the US like fast food, and other food that they don't have in other countries. So yes, money isn't everything but struggling like that I can understand why they would do anything to survive..

It seems the main thing preventing the same from occurring in India, is their religious beliefs in relation to monkeys. Which it appears is not likely to change, so they need to deal with the issue in their own way.
If they arent comfortable with eradication, I think sterilization and relocation are the only "humane" options they have left. However, all of that costs money, which is another problem India is struggling with. Not enough $ to even take care of their people, much less provide for the needs of the monkey population!
As someone who's grown up in western civilization, I would really find it INTOLERABLE to live with monkeys crawling all over everything, defecating everywhere, attacking people, spreading disease, damaging property, strewing garbage, etc! Simply COULD NOT, & WOULD NOT live with such conditions! Tho that's not due so much to "personal feelings" about them, there are simply legitimate health & safety concerns connected to these circumstances!
Idk maybe the best solution for India, would be to simply remove their "protected" status, which would then allow their CITIZENS to DIRECTLY decide how they want to deal with any problems they are having with them. That way the issue is entirely decided by the people in effected communities, rather than some religion-based govt mandate deciding how to handle the problem. Let the PEOPLE decide. If the majority of people in a community wish to leave them alone, then they will naturally be left alone, & the people can continue to live with them, as they please. However individual home owners, property owners, & businesses within those "tolerant" communities, would still be free to choose to eradicate or remove them from their PRIVATE properties, if that's their choice. (If the "gods" disapprove, the onus is on them, not anyone else!)
Likewise, if a majority of people in the community want them eradicated or removed, they can do so privately, via their own resources, & thereby solve their individual monkey problems. But if individual home owners, property owners, or business owners, wish to leave them alone on their private property, that is a choice they can make for themselves, based on their personal beliefs.
Then public officials would only need to manage monkey populations in public places, which will save the state money. And once again - if a humane solution is what they are seeking, then they should invest in relocation and sterilization projects. If there isnt enough natural habitat to sustain their current population, then I think the only hope for them to have a QUALITY existence, is to limit their numbers, & limit them primarily to specified wildlife sanctuary areas. (Or unmanaged wilderness areas) While also limiting their numbers in areas where they may still co-mingle with humans. They shouldnt be allowed to breed without limits, wherever they are, under the current conditions. And that's really what's best for THEM, ultimately. There is never any quality of life, when numbers exceed what is realistically sustainable via the existing environment. (That concept could also apply to people, as well! If we limited OUR OWN numbers, we'd be taking less habitat away from wildlife!)

This is so very sad, as in do many places ppl move in and take everything. The forests are leveled for the timber to cover the more barren land in suburbs, apartment bldings, businesses, and the animals are killed, trapped, mutilated by traps and starved out. There is no place for the animals. And then the ppl breed like rabbits , they call it progress and growth, the cities expand yet again and repeatedly the animals are pushed out. Over @ over it happens, all over the world. Now we have so many species that have our are becoming extinct. I just watched a documentary that stated there are two white rhinos left alive on the planet. TWO!!! THAT'S IT!! I don't even know if they are a breeding pair.. The orangutans are so close to extinction it's heartbreaking. Chimpanzees are now endangered!! Chimps at one time covered Africa like fleas on a dog, now there are 20,000 on the entire continent of Africa!!
They're used to be a song and the chorus had this one line that has stuck in my mind since i was a teen.
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.
That's what's happening to our world. And nobody cares. The earth is failing due to our greed, use, and abuse of the planet. We will die at our own hands, from our own greed and lack of humanity.
    And we deserve it.
The crime and evil about it is only that we will kill every animal on the planet as we go...😢😢😢😢

As long as humans and monkeys exist there will be conflict. The best option is to regulate the population of monkeys. If there is a lack of natural predators then it's up to humans to do so by controlled sterilization or issue hunting permits. Kinda like how we here in the US regulate the white tail deer population in areas where the necessary predators are absent. The best analogy for us in the US is to imagine raccoon numbers equaling what these people are experiencing but with monkeys.

I want to start by saying I love monkeys which is how I found this documentary. Also I don't know how your government works, so I may be a little nieve to some of my thoughts. The hardest part if all of this seems to be the people and navigating the religious part of things respectfully. India is quite large and I would think their is a handful of places large sanctuaries can be built. But you have a major issue with to large of numbers of monkeys to regulate humanly. They have a very specific hierarchical society and grouping tons of random monkeys together is gonna cause a problem you can't imagine or deal with. To me medically rendering males and females not able to produce babies seems like the only way to get a handle on the situation and stay within humane and religious context. When the numbers go down, sanctuaries are in place and working properly along with a standard number of monkeys agreed upon that is condusive to the areas in which they live, then they wont need to be interfered with any longer. But the living conditions for both humans and monkeys currently is appaling and should not be allowed. The risk of humans contracting rabies or tons of other diseases alone should be top priority over everything. I understand monkeys have a sacred meaning but does that put them over your people I think even your lord would understand that. If every possible consideration is taken for a humane and honest way to help this situation for both people and monkeys is taken any creator would be understanding. It makes no sense for things be allowed to continue and both species end up suffering and thats what is happening right now. My government is as guilty as any but I really hope you can figure out a way to hold them liable and get to the bottom of that because that's just horrible for them to do to the people that are supposed to be trusted for the people. I'm sad seeing all you have had to put up with and endure and I wish you and the monkeys good fortune and the best possible outcome.
