I always love to hear Mr Snyder talk, he is very calming to me even if he is talking about scary stuff.. Plus I love history, learning and listening to someone that isn’t arrogant.

I agree. I listen to him at night. His voice is calming, but his compassion, wisdom, insight are especially reassuring. He is brilliant, and a good man. A hero.

His Yale series, ‘The Making of Modern Ukraine’. Still has me wondering why, as a European, I never heard any of this…

I recently listened to his audiobook on Our Malady. He had a life threatening experience- almost died. This man is an American treasure

I took health and health insurance for granted for SO MANY years and then my husband got very sick and I was laid off, then I got deathly sick but still had to work for insurance and for years insurance has been such an enormous issue. It is an issue that has kept me awake related to this election. It has cost us so much money and grief and we had worked so hard to take care of ourselves. I would love to see universal healthcare here. But I am going to read this book because I agree freedom is so multidimensional and now I’m fascinated. I have watched so many of your videos and love your work. Thank you.

I love the Frederick Douglass quote that these men were rebels in their own time, and that the way to honor them is to be rebels in your own time. This is always been how I've seen things, and I think it informs us the of way forward. Always. Thank you!

We take our unexamined understanding of Freedom as fact...Freedom is a word we take for granted. prof. Snyder made an important remark that is most frequently omitted in our US conversations and understanding of Freedom; I will paraphrase: Freedom requires that we cooperate and work together to create the good things in life. Without the context of goodness, there is no freedom. No one individual can create the context for freedom alone. Consequently, without cooperation and working for the common good we can never be free. I hope I got this right.

It always drives me crazy and makes me doubt the validity of the comment, when there is absolutely no substance or detail mentioned, just spewing a tsunami of hyperbolic praise, like some kind of "pick me" sycophant...

I just read *On Freedom*. In my CT community we just elected our Rep foe the 22nd District, a nurse. Healthcare and health is central to her program going forward. I also agree about knowledge of the past, as a key to understanding now and envisioning the future. Thank you so much. Finally, I grew up near Hudson, Ohio - in Mantua, and attended Kent State University.

Interesting that he talked about “freedom to or freedom for” and “freedom from.” I remember clearly that distinction being made when we discussed Soviet Communism in high school in the early ‘60s.

You were being propagandised to about what was deemed to be an existential enemy at the time. Ironically you had far more 'freedom to' back then before the Reagan/Thatcher revolution insisted 'freedom from' was the only freedom that mattered, allowing private forms of government, like corporations, to have more control over your life.

Constantly living in fear, no matter where you are, is obviously not freedom. Thinking you don't have any choices because of someone else, a bully, boss, whoever, even a leader in another country threatening death, isn't freedom.
Responsibility is, the ability to respond effectively.

So, here we are. We have allowed many people to interfere with our whole election process, from Russian political technology, to bully gangs that prevent the votes of fellow Americans in fake stings and billionaires like Musk who bribe people to vote. All of this happening with a more ignorant populace. We have to do better than that.

There's another reason causing a decline in IQ: a recent study has found that each subsequent COVID-19 infection can cause a decline in IQ of 3 points (6 points if the infection was severe, and caused lasting symptoms).

We cannot slaughter our way to freedom. Democracy is hard, slow, but like water it finds away to penetrate. What's happening in Ukraine is the exact opposite. One need only look back to September 11 to see US actions had nothing to do with freedom. US since fall of USSR has adopted the barbaric playbook of the British empire. Its actions have left a mountain of corpses, wounded. Created 39 million refugees. $7 trillion in damages and several nations in ruins. Every country involved is worse off. These numbers don't include Ukraine or Gaza. We must have PEACE. We face civilization threatening man made catastrophes that need immediate attention. Yet America calls for nothing but more wars, death, suffering.

    • @robspirko7383
      @robspirko7383 Месяц назад +1

Tell that to Russia my dude. If Russia had never invaded, there would be no mountain of corpses in Ukraine. And Russia is never going to negotiate peace in a way that will preserve Ukraine as long as they still think they can win and hold territory.

Hit or miss instant mix philosophy he throws off like a spinning pin wheel flinging off some glitter bits that sometimes stick and make sense and sometimes just impress in a quick silver way then fades quickly...
Smart man ... but maybe a bit more of a charlatan with a quick turn of phrase than a deep deliberative philosophical mind...
