  • Paul R. Williams was the architect behind some of the most iconic buildings in Los Angeles and the homes of many of Hollywood’s biggest stars of the 20th century. The Los Angeles County Courthouse, Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, the Los Angeles International Airport are just a few of the designs that sprang from his imagination. But despite the genius of his vision, Williams still had to overcome the discrimination of clients who saw his race before his talent. In fact, even though he designed The Beverly Hills Hotel, he couldn’t stay there. This is his story.

She has such grace and refinement. Some aspects of gracefulness can be learned. But the core and fundamental character to live gracefully without having to think about it, is something a person has or doesn't have. And she has it.

Paul R. Williams lived next door to my mother's family until he built his beautiful home in the Lafayette Park area. My mother Patricia Miller remembers Mr. Williams as handsome, courtly, elegant and friendly. He came and took my mother to see his new house with the deck that appeared to be the prow of a ship. The entire community on W 35th revered him and his wife as lovely and generous people. She remembers him building a large room in the back of his home to welcome clients to sit and exchange ideas. She always went by to visit with their dog Mitzi and thought it was amazing that he had a badminton court in the back.
Whenever I think of the image of Hollywood and Los Angeles with the sleek and unfussy homes, I always remember that what I'm seeing is Paul Williams. Paul Williams was and is Los Angeles architecture.

While I was majoring in Architecture, I had never heard of this LEGEND. Sure I heard of the “Frank Lloyd Wright’s” but not Mr. Paul Revere Williams; it’s a shame
