If Earth doubled in size without changing it's mass it's gravity would be 1/4 g on the surface, to double gravity earth would have to weight 8 times more. But since they keep everything simple in this video it would mean earth mass is doubled so in result we would weight 1/2 of our current mass.

First, I just want to say that I love this channel! It’s my new favorite space content channel, even if it’s not space science per se. But I think that’s also one of the challenges that I see as both a subscriber and a viewer of this channel. Statements are regularly made (either via voiceover or on-screen titles) at the beginnings of videos, and later on within the videos, that are not factual. They are speculative in nature. Here’s an example: “This is what WOULD happen if…” and then the main focus of the video fills in the blank. I think it’s important to realize that what you’re providing to viewers is largely conjecture (in other words, a guess, or a speculation). With all of the videos that I’ve watched so far on this channel, I don’t believe that there is any scientific method available that would definitively prove your hypothesis for any given subject (in this instance, we have no scientific means of actually doubling the size of a planet). Obviously, you’re drawing on existing scientific theory to extrapolate what MIGHT happen or what COULD happen, but in fairness, it’s not necessarily what WOULD happen. Does that make sense? I think that by simply changing “would” to either “could” or “might” you would be keeping the premise of the videos the same, but be more factually correct. By saying “would,” you’re making an empirical statement of fact, without possibly knowing if it’s true or not (even though it could be true based on current scientific theory). I think that this one change would serve subscribers and viewers better, and be more authentic in the process. Other than that, keep up the good work! You do an amazing job of entertaining, and I appreciate the great depth of the variety of video clips that you use for each video, as well as the incorporation of scientific theory. Great editing too! I would just caution you to not make definitive statements on your premise for any given topic, but rather clearly articulate that your premise is speculation.
That's dumb we wouldn't have known if we didn't exist. It's like does the tree make sound when no-one is there? No it doesn't sound is created by our brain same as what you wrote
@@businessmanbrute2211 That is just factually incorrect and I don't know how that relates to my comment. Obviously trees would make sound (whatever sound it may be) even if there aren't humans around. Our existence is not a factor to their movements. And there may be thousands of more habitable earth-like planets out there even if we don't know about it.
@@WhatIfScienceShow pluto is not a planet for a reason :/ there are a lot of large objects in the kyper belt such as pluto, eris or haumea Please be more accurate mainly because children watch your videos
Pluto would still need to clear it's orbit before anything to become a planet. Size is just a side factor among many reasons, and Plutos orbit isn't exactly clean. Also if it got big enough it'd collide with Charon which is orbiting the same point of mass or whatever it's called alongside Pluto, very close to it actually. So an increase of mass might doom Pluto since it'd collide with a dwarf planet.
What an ingenious sponsor and what an ingenious company idea. You will be the first RUclipsr that I've used their sponsor. We all need to protect our planet, and I get to do it to the homeland of my ancestors.
I love the Moon but always wondered what if the collision that formed the Moon didnt release enough material to form a solid body but instead formed a ring around Earth. Imagine looking up and seeing a giant ring from horizon to horizon.
I love how, I’m assuming, 99% of us have always been here or have been here for a while, and with captions on if you need to stay quiet, you don’t even need to see em to know the “This is ‘What If’, and here’s what would happen if…” has came up
I love What If videos! Always learn more than I used to in school lol. But I have a question, what is the song in the beginning of the video? I really like it.
Doubling in mass will be unnoticed but doubling the radius means that the mass is two to power of 3 like the volume. What is double for our eyes is in fact 8 times bigger. As the pressure in the middle of the planets will be also higher, possible the mass will be even bigger. Jupiter will be very close to become a star if the mass will be at least 13 times bigger.
Just because a planet increases its volume by a factor of 2 doesn't mean that all other variables increase in a linear fashion (i.e., increase by a factor of 2 as well).
This is making a lot of assumptions for the sake of simplicity. Most notably, it's assuming the planets maintain their current density (which means matter appearing out of nowhere, but this is a what-if after all).
Why can't these videos wait until the end before they plug their sponsors? It would make it a little less annoying for those of us trying to watch their content.
The title should include "What if all of a sudden all of a planets double in size", evolving into planets double there size wouldn't effect it in any way...!!!😎👍🇨🇦

For Earth, if it doubled in size, every single human and their bodies etc will also double in size, along with everything else. All we'd notice is that the moon would look twice as large as the sun, and the sun would look unusually small.
Well if Jupiter doubled in size… (my prediction before the episode starts) Jupiter becomes a sun. But are we talking about doubling in mass? Can something become bigger but still have the same amount of mass? Like a planet double in size but still be the same density as it’s original size?
It has the biggest influence on the solar system as a whole because of how much more massive it is than even the other gas planets. Changes in how all the planets work would have the most noticeable impact with the changes in Jupiter.

No. It's called the Square Cube Law. Their size may be doubled once, but their _mass_ is doubled _three times._ This is because their size increases in three dimensions, not just one. 2 times 2 times 2 = 8.
If all oceans became freshwater, almost all of Earth's marine life would die, and quite painfully. The problem is that fish's bodies expect the salt content inside and outside their bodies to be roughly equal. Water tends to move towards places with higher salt concentrations due to osmosis. A saltwater fish in freshwater would absorb too much of the water around it, and its cells would explode like overstuffed water balloons (hypotonicity). On the other end, a freshwater fish in saltwater would have all of their moisture stolen by the salt surrounding them and dehydrate (hypertonicity).
If mass remains the same, gravity is cut in half as the distance between the centers doubled. But let's say that mass increased proportional to size. Square cube law states that if an object is double it's size, if it is the same density, it's mass would increase by 8 times. If this happened earth would be 8 times as massive if it's size doubled. But while the Rocky planets of the solar system becomes 8 times as massive, as their density would remain the same, gas planets are confusing.
