First of all, love your videos! Really fun to watch and I like the reviews. Second, I have to agree with pike squad. Personally I don't fish for zander deeper than 10-12 meters because starting from that depth they might come up with their eyes popping out and their insides pushed out of the mouth. If you do, you have to take your time reeling them in so they can adjust the amount of gas in the swim bladder. Unlike pike or carp their swim bladder is closed so they can't release air through the mouth. Coming from a depth of 20 meters it will suddenly expand to 3 times the volume due to dropping water pressure, literally pushing out their insides. Same story for perch. Releasing them with a little push like you did might help them to return to depth and push everything back in place but they don't always survive. Anyway, can't blame you if you didn't know. You have to find a maximum depth you're comfortable with. Sometimes they already show those symptoms coming from
this is totally wrong and ignorant to several scientific experiments. nothing more than a comfort excuse to keep on fishing in those depths. even if perch or zander swim down lively most of them die on the ground later. please read prof. Dr. arlinghaus (english paper) and stop spreading non approved semi knowledge. stay honest to your self .....read REAL INFORMATION!
Simon you are the ignorant here, stfu, this is not a excuse, its a fact, I dont fish at this depths anyway, but the fact is, if you take you'r time and "pla"y with the fish, there will be no effect from the water pression, adjusting the amount of gas in the swim bladder !
you don't even now that perch species adjust their gas in the stomage and not in the bladder...I just can repeat, start seriously studying your target species. you are definitely far away from understanding it. once again....don't you think it's ridiculous ignoring a decade science only focusing on.mortality of perch species?
Being local to the area and planning a trip to Rutland for the first time, i really enjoyed this video ! Anymore reservoir fishing trip videos would be most welcome !
What a crazy session! So funny to read all the wrong advice and critics about gassed fish. Nice wind speed that - can make such a difference. Fishing there next weekend for first attempt so fingers crossed 🤞
Have to agree with comments re: reeling them up from depth so quickly but hey, if you didn't know then it can't be helped. Like you've said already, you know for next time, just play them for longer and reel them up through the water column in stages giving them a chance to adjust to the pressure changes. Great video. Love all your videos. Look forward to the next one. Tight lines.
Hello mate. I'm planning to fish Rutland water in the next few weeks.. Please can u kindly advise what size jig heads u were using? And did u have an echo sounder?
No offence dude, like your video's a lot, but you cannot fish so deep for zander, just the first 3 fish you caught had their eyes popped out.... not good for the fish, still a nice video mate!! if you fish that deep you have to drill the fish very slowly then you have less chance that the eyes and swimming blatther will pop out as well. Keep up the good work btw, was watching you since the beginning! big thumbs up
DB Fishing no probs, everybody still needs to learn :) and i would like to make as lot videos as you do, but school just makes it so impossible to keep up weekly videos... maybe next spring ;) will keep following you ! later 👌
I definately agree with pike squad ! First you set the hook, and then you bring it up slowely, and reel just enough to keep tension on the line, let it tire out in the deep THEN bring it up very slowly. So that was the first fault, second... if you do manage to push out the swim bladder by barometric pressure, NEVER PUT THE FISH back ! that's just cruel... better kill it straight away and enjoy the meal... other than that: nice location
Dan this is rubbish, people fish for zeds all the time. one thing you have to do is give them a proper chuck back, which you did pretty often. Good vid, keep it up
Hi, how did you book your day fishing session? You just pop up there and that's it or you need to book in advance? Cause I can't reach them by phone and you can't do booking via website and btw, amazing video mate
Hi DB as always your one of my go to when learning new techniques your videos have helped me with all my lure fishing massively I’ve recently been invited to fish the world predator classic at Grafham water in August I’ve looked at your list of rods reels lures etc and see on your list your light rods as well as heavy what did you use as your main Rod on the day I’ve never fished like this before so I know I’ve probably got to get a decent vertical fishing rod now but wondering if my lighter rods will be of any use as well ?? the competition is for all predators so will be hunting Zeds pike and perch on the day as well so several different styles I guess Regards Dave
Just started following this week and now going back through older videos. From a fellow Yorkshireman, Excellent Work! You can see the difference in your Angling and presentation over the 2 years. I've never caught a Zander, but I'd always imagined they'd fight like buggery. Is it because they are living very deep here, or is this normal?
Great video guys and glad to see that you managed to get on the fish. Deep water zander fishing is highly additive. I hope to see you guys out on the water before the end of the season. Mike - thelurebox.co.uk
I’ve read a lot in your comments about playing them slowly to avoid baratrauma. Unfortunately this will make it worse as they can only metabolise the gas through their blood stream which is a very slow process (other species can ‘burp’ excess gas). The best method is to play them hard and return them quickly. Playing softly, leaving them to recover in a net, weighing, photographing etc all increase the probability of mortality. I share the same opinion, but g8 video :)
You can fish for more than 10/12 meters, just have to reel it way slower and Zander will be allright ! :) Hugo

Hello mate.

Do you loosen your drag so that the line doesn’t snap or for another reason?

Hi DB we will send you a video of us on our boat and I like your hat I want one😀
The fish of the minute 6:45 is dead, the eyes is out, man!!

The best thing to do when fishing for zander and perch at those depths is to eat them as they will die from barotrauma in any case.
Try the electric chicken color pattern for zander.
I would prefer fly fishing in Rutland water
