First off: UMINEKO FANS RISE UP! Now that that's out of the way: Umineko is a Japanese indie visual novel, originally released in eight different episodes from 2007-2010 and rereleased later as a collection. Its genre starts as a classic murder mystery, and it kind of... goes places from there. Because it's a mystery that's all I'll say about the plot. Musically, it's a massive collaboration project from the best indie vgm composers in Japan at the time. The OST is over 200 tracks and runs like 12 hours. There are actually 8 "main" composers that contributed at least 8 tracks each with their own style to the OST (Luck Ganriki is one of these) and over a dozen guest composers who contribute a song or two (Akiko Shikata is one of these). For the song names, Fishy Aroma is definitely one of the "mystery songs" of Umineko, to me it's basically the audio embodiment of a detective saying "something's fishy here!". I don't speak any romance languages so I just learned Ricordando il passato means remembering the past when you said it, and that makes sense because it's the end credits theme of the entire game, and the ending is definitely an emotional, reflective one. It's kind of uncanny how you drew Touhou at the end here, because there's a lot of overlap in the fandom and actually one of the songs on Umineko's OST is a cover of a Touhou song that references the previous work by Umineko's author. Thanks for the reaction!
To add to the part about Touhou, in the scene that song plays in you have a bunch of characters cosplaying as some of the Touhou main cast, it's great. And one more thing, one of the guest composers, U2 Akiyama, also worked on the Touhou fighting game OSTs.
I genuinely believe umineko has the best score out of any video game out there. It’s so extensive and so fitting for the series it’s actually mind blowing. I really hope you’ll be listening to more of it in the future
Ryukishi07 fans know. Even now, he carries the torch for his lost best friend. There are very few people I respect more than Ryukishi07 for the crazy stuff he did and continues to do in his memory.
Ricordando il passato is italian for remembering the past just like you thought. actually the whole piece is sung in italian, something I, an italian person, realized only on my 3rd listening of this song 😅.
Heck yeah! Finally an Umineko reaction! Umineko is the GOAT! Some bonus info, on top of what @dewot1256 mentioned: Umineko no naku koro ni (うみねこのなく頃に) literally means "when the seagulls cry." (well "umineko" is a Japanese seagull in particular). Its part of the "when they cry" series, as the localized series name is called. The other main known entry is Higurashi, which is mainly known in the west through the anime, but the visual novel was the original (and I still prefer it to the anime). About Shikata Akiko: She actually has her own group, and its kind of like progressive... pop? Its hard to describe, but Ricorodando Il Passato is very Shikata Akiko. She is awesome. And yeah, she loves doing Italian songs in addition to Japanese ones (though I will say its appropriate for Umineko to have some Italian). You've heard 2 composers so far (well, 3 including Wings that you forgot about, which is composed by dai), but as dewot mentioned there are 8 "main" composers and Shikata Akiko is a "guest" one, so you've heard 2/8 of the main composers so far, along with Akiko. Basically all of the composers kick ass in their own way, so look forward to listening to more Umineko and getting totally different vibes every time haha. There are over 200 tracks in Umineko, so there is ALOT of material. Another RUclipsr did a full OST reaction, and IIRC his reaction (which involved analysis) ended up being almost 21 hours for the whole thing combined (he uploaded 3 RUclips compliations). Umineko's soundtrack is its own rabbit hole. Unfortunately, it seems none of us Umineko cultists are platinum members haha. We need to go proselytizing to platinum member houses I think. :)
fun fact: the creator of Umineko "Ryukishi07" and one of the main composers "zts" are all very familiar with Touhou/ZUN, and Shikata Akiko is also heavily related to Ar Tonelico/nosurge series, both of which you have reacted to numerous times before
Everything on this ost is very deep, the reason why it's in Italian, who the lyrics are refering to, who made the lyrics, everything is linked into the series and that's why it is so emotional to me, it is personally saying the best song i heard in the entire world. No joke. And Umineko is not even my personal favorite visual novel, even though i really love it too, higurasih is, but this specific ost................. Damn......... Nothing can win against it.
Holy crap! Never thought I'd see Umineko again! There are so many great tracks from this series! Basically any song by ZTS is a banger and most of the rest of the tracks are stellar as well.
Umineko is a very long visual novel. At first I was intimidated reading the first episode but then I got to the point where fishy aroma played for the first time and that song had me committed to reading the entire thing
Umineko is literally the best visual novel I have EVER read. SO many good themes explored in it, the music is amazing, the writing is superb. (Be prepared for every Umineko fan to tell you and everyone else to read Umineko)
Umineko has a MASSIVE library of music in its OST, of all sorts of genres and styles. Definitely should check for some recommendations. There's a whole list of bangers.
The Japanese name of this game translates to "When the seagulls cry". It is a HUGE visual novel and one of my fav series ❤. This is a story about witches and detectives. Of imaginary worlds vs logical investigation.
Always a good thing to see visual novel soundtracks on here. Just a matter of time until we hear resurrected replayer, worldend_dominator and the executioner - I believe in the power of random draw winners.
curse you youtube for not recommending this to me when it came out! but I'm here now and I'm glad you're reacting to some soundtracks from this novel, some of the best music I've heard period, and I wouldn't consider myself a novice when it comes to video game music either, in fact I was only just watching your guilty gear reactions not too long so I'm even more confused about youtube's algorithm, anyways! I'm not sure if you take requests from the comment section but just in case you do, I hope you react to the track "Golden nocturne", "infant queen bee", and "Lix Axil" from the same novel! thank you for your reaction!!
Though similar in meaning, the actual translation is "Love is the thing that is able to see [it].", which fits better in my opinion, because you certainly CAN see it without love, it's just that with love, you WILL see it.
Love this soundtrack, it's got something from all genres, and created some new ones, like classical dark synthwave I guess. Definitely keep going down that request list
you've heard Akiko Shikata before, she's the vocalist for a lot of the songs you heard from Ar tonelico last year-ish, along with Haruka Shimotsuki (who sang MARIA from Atelier Ayesha) and Noriko Mitose, among many others, but Shikata is the one who did a lot of that music. :) she's mostly an indie composer, and lends her voice to soooo many things. they brought her back for the not-as-great Umineko anime opening which was an actual banger and was one of the only good things about it lol.
... it's already been 2 years since your reaction to my Umineko request? Good lord, time flies! Ah, I couldn't tell Fishy Aroma by its name but when I heard it, it was "Ah yes, this sound" :D And to have Ricordando il passato as the "second" reaction is amazing since it's my second favorite song! It is Italian, indeed. I've always known the song but since I haven't finished Umineko yet and see it's featured in EP8, I do wonder whether it's the ending song or not 😢 Also Akiko Shikata is also a well-known composer in the game sphere with perceived "obscure" games - iirc, she also had some songs in Ar Tonelico, which you have reacted to before Also, still talking about me being your mod in past tense, I see ... 😂
The previous "World End Valentine" from OMORI is actually one of two(? can't recall exactly) music reference to Umineko, "World End Dominator" in that instance!
Umineko is a visual novel, approx length is around... 1.3 million words, in book terms around 3600 pages. It's divided into two main arcs with 4 episodes each. Arc 1 Question runs around 76.5 hours, Arc 2 Answer about 70.5 hours.
@@okluminous566 If you don't like long stories, then Umineko isn't for you. It's very long, and it asks you to completely invest every single part of your being into every aspect of its story, whether that be the characters, the emotions tied to them, and their arcs, the plot, the themes, the music, the mysteries and questions, etc. if you've ever read Higurashi (the previous work by the author before Umineko) then you know sort of what to expect. At first what seems like a "simple" murder mystery story becomes....so.....so much more. It's a genuine masterpiece of a story, and fully worth experiencing, but it's also something that you can only go into if you have the drive and commitment to completely invest yourself in it. I highly, HIGHLY recommend it, it's one of my favorite visual novels, and stories in general, of all time.

As someone who grew up with Romanian and English, and then later learned some Latin in school, I've definitely joked before that I can probably read something written in any other romance language with at least a 60% comprehension rate even without properly knowing which other language it is. Definitely a useful trick! Though there are also times when something really sounds like it should mean the same thing in another language, and it just happens to be something completely different because of how language evolved. So it's a trick that comes with risks, and I don't know how well it would work if I had to hold a conversation. Still!
It is a beautiful read, and although it is not something you can finish in a short time, 80 to 100 hours aprox for 8 chapters, you look back with affection at how it accompanies you. And in that sense, Ricordando il Passato is the emotional farewell when you close that trip.
