Why Hitler Hated Bayern Munich

  • Bayern Munich's badge between 1938 and 1945, featuring a rather conspicuous symbol, is frequently shared online and on social media, as if to suggest that the club has or had close ties to the ideology associated with Germany's darkest era.
But it isn't true. Well, the badge is, but not the sentiment.
In this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at the reality of Bayern Munich's relationship with fascism, the history of the club, and why they were hated by Hitler and his supporters.

There was once an article that claimed Hitler was a Schalke fan. Schalke responded saying it was nonsense and that Schalke were just the most successful team during Hiter's reign. Schalke was basically the Bayern of the 1930s and early 40s, just absurdly dominant in the same way that Bayern is today. Of course, the Nazis tried to use this for their propaganda and explained their success as being due to inherently German characteristics - awkwardly, Schalke's team and especially its stars was in large part of Polish heritage, with the two defining Schalke legends of the time having the not, uh, exactly uber-germanic names Szepan and Kuzorra.

While we're on the subject of the Nazis trying and failing to use football for propaganda purposes, here's one of my all-time favourite footballing anecdotes:
In 1938, England played Germany in Berlin, and were forced to perform the Nazi salute as part of the UK's appeasement policy at the time. The players *hated* being made to do so, and fueled by that rage, they thumped Germany 6-3. One of England's six goals - described by Stanley Matthews as "probably the greatest goal I ever saw" - was scored by a Jewish forward named Len Goulden. From 25 yards out, he struck a volley with enough force to partially rip the net off the crossbar, then wheeled away and yelled "Let 'em salute that one!"
    Legend.

    Small correction Alfie:
By all accounts, Hitler didn’t take Jesse Owens winning some medals very badly. He apparently either waved or nazi saluted Jesse Owens in a quick exchange, according to Jesse Owens himself and other eye witnesses. He didn’t officially congratulate any winners of medals, except a few German ones I believe, because the IOC had told him he should either congratulate everyone, or nobody. He chose to congratulate nobody. Foreign press explained this as Jesse Owens being ‘snubbed’ by Hitler and that Hitler was ‘very upset’, but all accounts we have of the Olympics point towards Hitler not losing a single night’s sleep over it.
Jesse Owens himself has always maintained the United States treated him even worse than the Germans. The US was still an apartheid state at this point. People simply pretended he never won a medal. While other athletes received awards and celebrations, he and the other black athletes were basically told to sit in the back of the bus again. Only in 2016, Barack Obama invited the families of Jesse Owens and other black athletes over to show an official sign of appreciation from the white house.

Alfie, you have outperformed your consistent quality and insight with this video. Outstanding work. Works like this are becoming iincreasingly valuable as fascism makes another of its periodic resurrections. Your observations of Jewish integration into German society during the period of prosperity early in the century illustrate a fundamental fact about fascism. The bullying and persecution of The Other only appear when societies are stressed, most commonly by economic crisis (the Great Depression), but also during ethnic migrations, periods of national humiliation (Treaty of Versailles), and most recently as Western culture has encountered the inflection point of cultural evolution. It is most obvious in the U.S. where the abrupt increase in the rate of cultural evolution, with the advent of The Information Age has revealed our species' inability to adapt to environmental change beyond a certain rate. American society is beginning to turn on itself in a manner reminiscent of 1930's Germany, with the emergence of Hitler analogs like Trump. As in Germany under Hitler, our fascists are searching for scapegoats, the weakest groups in society to subject to potentially fatal bullying.
My point is Thank you for helping to illustrate this particular human failing in such a timely fashion.

10:54 it should be noted here, that Hitler (and probably also Hirsch for that matter, though I cant say for sure, since Hirsch got a second class iron cross whilst Hitler got a first class one and I am not sure if the second class one was actually more likely to be gotten by actually doing brave things in WW1) did not actually receive that iron cross for extraordinary bravery (though Hitler would have wanted you to believe otherwise). During that time most soldiers who received that thing actually were not the ones fighting on the frontline but actually serving the higher ups way behind the front lines and sucked up well enough. From all we know today, Hitler most likely was rather a coward than a war hero in WW1.

Hats off for tackling such a controversial and difficult topic. I appreciate you want to tackle a negative narrative and shine a light on a side that people outside of Germany won't have heard about. However you could just as well point out that many at the club were dedicated followers of the regime and joined the NSDAP long before they actually came to power. VP Harlacher comes to mind, but there were others. There were a lot of dedicated Nazis at the club, otherwise it would not have been allowed to continue.
I suggest that people who are interested do some additional reading and make up your own mind. I personally think you are being a bit to kind to Bayern, but it's nice that you remind people that there were people who showed resistance in Germany.
It's a very complex era of German history and you'll find that most sporting institution will have similar stories. By that I mean people who didn't agree with persecutions of jews and others had to find little ways to show disapproval, but ultimately had to toe the line.

Btw the history about landauer, his role and importance for the club was researched by the fans and not the club itself. That’s the thing about German football. As a fan you can literally change your club and motivate them for taking action in professional research and so on. Also the new statue in front of the Allianz Arena of Gerd Müller was also initiated by its fans.

There is already more than enough shallow entertainment focused content on RUclips about Football (which can also be executed properly, don't get me wrong). I don't get these people, just watch something else and quit acting as if Alfie's Style is objectively flawed with him mentioning politics. There is a difference between valid criticizm and your own opinion. I for example wouldn't go to the Irish Guys channel and comment about me disliking his loud screechy voice. I just don't like it as much but there is nothing objectively wrong with it. Maybe a lot of people writing that kind of stuff use football as an escape from real life and feel uncomfortable hearing about the harsh reality.

      Player (1970-1979):
      Joined Bayern Munich in 1970.
      Played as a forward.
Achievements: Won three Bundesliga titles, three European Cups, one DFB-Pokal, and one Intercontinental Cup.
Part of the legendary team alongside players like Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller.
      General Manager (1979-2009):
Took over as the club's general manager just months after his playing career ended due to injury.
Not to mention that when he took over Bayern was in debt, he made them financially stable immediately and since then Bayern has never been in the minus EVER.
Oversaw one of the most successful periods in Bayern's history, turning the club into a football powerhouse both on and off the pitch.
Achievements: Multiple Bundesliga titles, UEFA Champions League victories, and other domestic and international trophies.
      President (2009-2019, 2019-2022):
Elected as president of the club in 2009.
Brief hiatus: In 2014, Hoeneß was convicted of tax evasion and subsequently resigned as president. He served half of a 3.5-year prison sentence.
Re-elected as president in 2016 after his release.
Did not stand for re-election in 2022 and stepped down.
      Legacy:
Immensely influential in transforming Bayern Munich into one of the world's most successful and wealthiest football clubs.
Not without controversy, particularly the tax evasion conviction.
His involvement in the club, from player to executive, means he's been integral to the Bayern Munich story for over half a century.
The Tax evasion controversy is a sore spot but for everything he did for the club the Bayern fans forgave him immediately. You should look into it, its been an inspiring story.
Bayern did a short documentary about him when he stepped down for retirement(until this summer of course) but its in german.
