All Saints' Day. The cold and livid day is dying.
The rain falls in heavy streams from the weeping skies;
And in its old tower the church bell
Laments in long and deaf misery.
With a mournful clamor the sea breaks;
Large, plaintive birds descend on the meadows;
The elms of the path, scourged by the wind,
Desperate cries utter towards passers-by.
The deceased, awakened in the depths of the cemeteries,
For long moments asking for prayers
By the voice of brass, trees at bay.
And, among all the harsh noises of the storm,
Who raises the waves and makes the roofs crack,
Always more sadly the bell laments.
