  • Hello Buddies,
Skip started doing this a few weeks ago, we tried various ways to help him at first but it looks as if it's only getting worse.
He eats healthy, plenty of vegetables and I even added vitamin supplements to his water.
    How can I help him?

Poor baby! So much like humans that suffer a loss. I'm a widow for 7 years and the pain is still fresh.
I think feather plucking is a self soothing habit that's very hard to stop.
Like people with Tricotillomania. Hair pulling habit that also is extremely hard to stop. Leading to bald areas on the scalp.
I hope your sweet little boy is feeling better and in love again. 💞

I used to have an aviary. Birds are very social animals. They experience love and respect. Skippy will never be the same but with lots of interactions and perhaps a new friend he will get better. Feather pulling is a sign of depression and stress.

I feel so bad for Skippy. I can relate to this situation because my budgie Timmy did pluck his feathers like 5 years ago. Nothing was wrong at all but he was constantly plucking his feathers till his death. I found him death on the ground that morning on fathers day bleeding out because of plucking. And we don't know why he did pluck his feathers to this day. My mom and I thought he did that because he flew against te wall pretty fast and it probaly damaged his wing and skin. So rest in piece little Timmy, you are still here with us!🙏
And yeah, I'm so sorry for my bad English. Because I'm from the Netherlands

I had a same traumatized bird who witnessed her partner’s death, and everything has been changed for her. Her happiness, her innocent puppy eyes, her carefree abundance of joy all never have I seen after that. She got so traumatized from this experience, and I was heartbroken to see this happening all the way till her passing away. I was never able to completely heal her.
Till now, I accepted and acknowledged that there might be never true remedy to completely heal a broken bird-because they have been through life and death, why shall we expect them to just be happy and act as if they have been through nothing?
However, I did notice that talking to her with a slow calm voice for at least 10 minutes everyday made her feel a bit relieved, and felt that she has been cared for. It’s a lot of work to heal a broken heart, not only to humans, but all living souls.
I hope it helps. And I love your channel❤️

It might be good to consider to honor this bird’s sadness and trauma, and let the bird know that you volunteer to be a part of his pain with a loving heart. Birds do feel, and do react to people initiated loving whispers.

I had the same problem once and I couldn'und t help her (her partner had died after five years). Of course she was never alone. I had two other birds and bought a handsome boy for her. But she plugged her feathers and started to eat less and less. A friend of mine had 7 birds and took her in. She became another bird and became really happy. Might be, he needs more playmates. It was the case with my bird. Of course I am not a professional, but I know the feeling seeing your bird suffer like that. I hope you can find a way to help him.

Aww poor baby 🥺 I’ve never owned a bird before but I have been doing research for 6 months now. I just suggest letting him chill and don’t force to many new things on him. getting him a new companion was a great idea! I think adding the new female made him happier than he would have been without her. Still take him out of the cage to cuddle and play, just go easy on him. Best of luck for you and skippy :>

this is what happened to me. Since my friend had a dog, she couldn’t let the budgies out. She took care of my 2 budgies for 8 months, and when I got them back I opened the cage and my bird was slamming her head everywhere, and she died the next day due to severe injuries. After a few days of her death, my second budgie couldn’t take it anymore and also flew to heaven. I miss them so much…😭

I wish I knew how to help but I haven't even been able to help my friends out of this sort of grieving from such a hurtful loss. Time will help and the more he's occupied the less he can pluck. Someone mentioned getting him more friends and I think that could help. You can also try giving him more foraging puzzles.

You can get him some more friends, and try to give him alot of attention and play with him alot. Also, try to spend alot of time with him (for when he got depressed). And to help skippy, you will have to try and get a budgie almost like his partner, and make sure he becomes friends with her. Also, try making him happier as your playing with him. If it doesn't work, try different methods. I hope it works!

Got skinnier and skinnier until the beak was so long it could not eat normally anymore and we had to help her eating.
I think budgies bond with another budgie for life and struggle hard with heart ache.

My budgies mate just died. It was so sudden. The night before, she was squeaking with every breath she took, and I had hoped that after a night with lots of fluid and water, she'd be okay. I checked on her before I left for school, and she was still alive. I came home to sprite (my male budgie) calling out for her, and I looked on the floor of the cage to see her lying on her back with her eyes closed. He still chirps for her. Today, we're getting another budgie and after quarantining the two of them we'll introduce them to each other slowly. He was such a happy bird, and I really hope he'll be okay.

I had budgie too but sadly after sometime my parents sold them because they were too naughty and my parents weren't able take care of them as they are always busy and I was too young... I was in 1st grade, now I am again asking my parents to get them again because I am now old enough to take care of budgies 😃
Also I remembered that my budgies actually plugged out their fur too for no reason, I thought this was normal now I am thinking they might be unhappy with us that time...
But I think you should give him more time and love and take him outside and if you have neighbors who have birds too then you should take him to theirs so skip might be able to get out of his past and enjoy his time with his new friends or you can buy more budgies so he won't be alone anymore

I can relate to it. I had Chulbuli female budgie and Pineapple male budgie. Both were in love. I had also put a breeding box. Chulbuli died all of a sudden on 2 Jun 2024 maybe due to heat stroke. She used to rest in breeding box most of the time. My Pineapple budgie fell ill on 3 Jun 2024. I got him treated by my regular vet. He ised to get a bit cured but fell ill regularly. My family doesn't supported me and where against showing Pineapple to vet. Vet doctor used to visit our residence. He didn't prescribed any stool test. Due to convenience and money constraint I didn't changed the vet. On the last day of my Pineapple budgie 17 Aug 2024, Pineapple tried everything to save himself by eating and drinking whatever he can. Bit we failed him by staying at home and didn't took him to vet though it was very urgent. My Pineapple budgie passed away. We had 2 and a half months to save him but we didn't.

What I do to prevent this from happening, is that I do activities with my bird, and give it treats whenever it doesn't pluck or acts aggressively. I give it a lot of love!

It is very hard when they self harm. I have a girl Budgie that lost her partner about 2 years ago I didn’t know what to do with her forever. She preened herself silly, she was bald in places. She has a new partner now, but it took over a year. I just tried to spend as much time with her as I could. Try getting a toy they can keep busy with. I have a shredding ball, and they love to focus extra energy and stress on that. Also, I had many to start with (Two were her siblings) so they were like a mini family. Maybe bringing about four more in might help. I know it’s hard to care for them but sometimes having a few peers and not just a mate might ease the stress of trying to breed again right away. You should be careful of this too as you don’t want to bring any sickness or plight on your Budgie, try to bring more Males then females in. Hope this helps. 🙏🏻

My female budgie passed this morning, my male budgie was devastated. He is depressed and comes to me and my sister for attention and we’re gonna give him as much attention as possible until we can find another bird for him

I think budgies mate for life. So unfortunately, Skippy probably won't be able to get over the loss of his mate. Not much you can do. :/ Too bad birds don't have therapists :/

When my cockatiel's mate died, she began laying eggs every two days without letup. Once I rescued a baby chicken from the rain, and put it in her cage for lack of a better place. She enjoyed the company and stopped laying eggs. She was elderly, and I didn't want to get her another mate, but I found that if I put a bird of a different species in with her, she was happy and didn't lay eggs. I got her a young budgie, and it worked out perfectly.

I feel so bad for my lady Opal, My Birb Son and Her mate had passed away a couple days ago, they were raising kids together. She didn't see him die so I dont fully think she knows he passed.
