When the Lexus LS400 and Infiniti Q45 arrived in 1990 it's seems like they were aimed at two different types of luxury car buyers. The Lexus was aimed at the Mercedes Benz buyer who prefers pure luxury and top notch quality(Mercedes was still at the top of their game at that time), and the Infiniti was aimed at the BMW buyer who prefers luxury with a dash of sportiness.

I remember when this car originally came out with the LS400. From a performance, technical, and looks aspect, I liked this one much better than the LS400. I feel like Infiniti botched the launch of the brand with their marketing campaign with the “zen” ads and to this day still hasn’t recovered. Their brand seems to be the value brand, price shoppers who want BMW performance but don’t want to pay the price. They never got much brand value out of the Q name, so renaming the entire line to Q and QX didn’t really help either, imho. It just made it more confusing.

The Nissans provided a more comfortable, flatter ride than the Lexus, which had an even softer ride. However, there was more vertical motion in the Lexus. After several years, the Lexus proved to be better built cars. They showed negligible signs of wear, whereas passengers in the Nissans began to sense a growing looseness in the suspension. Besides, the Nissans were having to be sent the shop for repairs of the sort that weren't required in the Lexus.

@@jackdough8164 those 4 speed autos were just awful, never being able to tap into the powerband. essentially only had 3 speeds for acceleration, since 4th was way overdriven to maximize cruise speed fuel economy.

I despise those Zig-Zag shifting patterns. In a parking lot, when someone starts backing up and you are behind them, a zig-zag gear shifting pattern is a hazard.

My friend had a ‘93 q45 and we used romp that thing like crazy. The ‘93 was a bit quicker than this one in the video. He managed a 7 second 0-60 and a 14.8 in the 1/4 mile. We were out driving like maniacs in it one night and my friend took a turn way to fast and overcorrected, tried to fix it with throttle but didnt have enough room and we wrecked hard into a steel fence that stopped us dead and luckily. There was a 40 foot drop beyond the fence which would have been bad news for us. Fun car though.

The plastics inside and the cluster looked very cheap compared to what was in even the base Lexus ES300 at the time. These were also pigs on fuel. They all but vanished from the roads after 10 years went by since depreciation was brutal so anything to repair over 40% of what the whole car was worth would economically total it. It wasn’t as much of a disaster as the Mazda 929.

My first dream car. Specifically the 1994, as it paired the updated styling with the t active rear steering. So neat. So dated. So questionable. The styling hasn't aged well at all. I wonder if remaining first gen Q45s number in the hundreds yet. I did see a 2000 Q41t anniversary edition last week. Seems like thats the generation that has lasted. First and third gens are all gone. Third gen was so sweet when new, with those awesome retrofuturistic commercials, big 18 inch wheels and gattling gun headlights. Now they look like bloated 2002 Altimas. Infiniti: an MBA program case study in what not to do.

@@eriknephrongfr8847 What part of "just messed up the 1989 market debut period" said otherwise?
It just seems that virtually everyone who sees the first generation in retrospect, always recall the ads and mistakenly imply, they never showed the car (ever), as if it went on for years.
These mistakes ran for about 3 months, until the first ads showing the car appeared on TV around January 1990. Q45 was launched in November 1989.

@@eriknephrongfr8847I don't care how old you are. You equally tried to essentially put words in my mouth, as if I hadn't already acknowledged that they messed up at the beginning with the first ads.
You're merely projecting of course, because funny enough you thought it was new knowledge to anyone else about those first ads. Anyone informed enough regarding Infiniti knows about that already.
Has nothing in fact to do with this video regarding an updated 1994 model, which was seen on TV frequently in ad marketing and product placement. You should be commenting that tired old trivia from 1989, on more contextually relevant videos of the original 1990 model and not later years.
The Q45 struggled plainly because it was too unconventional, with no prestige to boot. The ads were hardly a long lasting effect, considering that some high end products without any marketing still sell reasonably. You're pointing out the obvious and nothing new, so stop clapping for yourself.
