I said it once and I’ll say it again. If the marines were going to replace the FN M249 saw, why couldn’t they have switched to this instead of piston drive AR that only feeds from magazines.
The Negev is an excellent and ergonomic LMG, but it is actually heavier than the FN M249. The US military has been looking for a lightweight Squad Automatic Weapon for a long time. I wonder if the Knights Armament SAW could fill that role. It's constant recoil system and low rate of fire benefit long-distance engagements, but it may be limited in suppressive firepower.
@@AnonEMus-cp2mn i carry the negev in my serves( im in the IDF) it is only 7.6 KG. I think that the us army will never buy an israeli lmg in large numbers.. i know for a fact that the special us forces bought the NEGEV 7 (7.62x51).
When I served in IDF, we had one of the older versions of Negev (Mk2, I think). We actually never used mags, it was explained to us as unreliable. But, because the Galils aren't in use anymore, all Negevs had M16 mag adapters, and M16 mags are a bit infamous in terms of durability. So the adapter used mostly as a belt bag holder.
I take it you've used both in military service? Can I ask what your honest opinion is of it as a weapons system in "real world", less than ideal range conditions? How would you rate it compared to other weapons for accuracy and reliability? Is it genuinely as good as it looks? I'm from the U.K. and our armed forces adopted then recently withdrew the minimi as it just didn't meet expectations, I'm wondering if perhaps they just didn't buy wisely?
@@totoze1956 I didn't get much trigger time behind the Negev. It entered service as I transitioned to the Armord core which kept on using the MAG. @@jonprince3237 We love it in the IDF. The old ones which are used in the training facilities are all beaten up and jam frequently ( which sometimes gives the weapon a bad name) but the ones in the active battalions are working perfectly. There is a newer version with a retracting/folding stock like in the Galil Ace which is even more reliable. I was a machinegunner only once in a drill and I shot 600+ round during a 2 hours drill (running, crawling) after walking with it for a whole day. Not a single jam.
Very cool video Ian. You need to get a shot timer to take with you so you can start calculating actual rate of fire. The rate of fire with the magazine was higher to my ear than the normal belt fed setting by a pretty good amount. Thanks for the great videos!

Infantrymen here with almost 23to years in service, first assignment was a SAW gunner. During my first night live fire exercise. I drop my 200 rd drum. I had no ammo,my team leader tossed me 2 full mags. That M249 SAW spit all 60rds out with zero malfunction. Disgree on that Ian. I've had malfunctions on it during other times. And 100% of the times it was the magazines were garbage.
if you run a belt through it when it's set to the magazine gas setting does it lower the fire rate even more than from a magazine, or does it just not run?
It would likely not run. In his earlier video, where he went through the gun's internals, he indicated that the magazine setting bleeds off excess gas pressure which is normally required to allow the system to operate the belt feed properly.
my anecdotal experience with a 249 was really good, i never really had issues feeding from my magazines. I found that if you maintained it like any other weapon it was really reliable. Carried one for about 2.5 years. The negev looks dope though
The one I use to carry (s/n 005512) was the same way; dirty or clean, live ammo or blanks, belt or magazine fed it was very reliable. Against conventional wisdom, we'd use that open bolt weapon to initiate ambushes (training). However, my SAW (and yours) were the exception - I had plenty of buddies in the platoon whose SAWs were very finicky.
@@andy_in_nh9243 I can remember one issue I had with an old magazine that would not seat all the way in the well and thusly the bolt would not pick a round. Changed mags and had no problems. This was back when my unit was first authorized to be issued M-249s and they had the old style barrels. The guns were laterally transferred to us from 2nd Brigade, 25th ID when they moved from Schofield to Fort Lewis back in 1995. Eventually the barrels were replaced with the newer heavy ones in 1996. I see some shikikans at the comment section..
They bought just a few of them. I know that because i know someone that works in IWI
Does the m-16 mag adapter work with p-mags? If so it would be quite interesting to run with 60 round drum mags.
if the spring pressure remains relatively constant there's no reason why it shouldn't... but it's easier to use belt bags
@@AvihooI Efficiency of reloading, was thinking in more of a match environment.
Like another commenter said, it can take m16 mags in an emergency, but isnt very reliable when doing so.
When you fired that off the magazine I said "holy crap" out loud. Modern LMGs are really quite special.
So the adapter used mostly as a belt bag holder.
i feel so proud every time i see an israeli gun in a gun video
*2000$,no recoil,150 bullets in its mag,an absoulut israeli beast*
what a very nice look into the Negev
Excellent weapon, very versatile. The 7.62x51 version is amazingly low in weight, competing designs having about 3 kilos of extra heft.
After the first 15 bullets it shoots perfectly straight.
Unlike the MAG this thing shoots out the spent casing and linkage like a hail storm. I learned that the hard way :-)
I take it you've used both in military service? Can I ask what your honest opinion is of it as a weapons system in "real world", less than ideal range conditions? How would you rate it compared to other weapons for accuracy and reliability? Is it genuinely as good as it looks? I'm from the U.K. and our armed forces adopted then recently withdrew the minimi as it just didn't meet expectations, I'm wondering if perhaps they just didn't buy wisely?
@@totoze1956 I didn't get much trigger time behind the Negev. It entered service as I transitioned to the Armord core which kept on using the MAG. I did hear that it hed some problems as it entered into service, but I understand that those problems were fixed and the weapon is very liked by all units that use it.
Most of the spent casings hail-stormed out of this baby looks heavily dented in the high-speed photography - is that typical?
@ can't remember honestly. It's was 20 years ago.

Curious too.
It would likely not run. In his earlier video, where he went through the gun's internals, he indicated that the magazine setting bleeds off excess gas pressure which is normally required to allow the system to operate the belt feed properly.
You would get off one to two rounds and then jam. Happened to a friend of mine on the range.

my anecdotal experience with a 249 was really good, i never really had issues feeding from my magazines. I found that if you maintained it like any other weapon it was really reliable. Carried one for about 2.5 years. The negev looks dope though
Indian Army buying 65,000 LMG from Israel.❤️❤️❤️
Not only does holding the trigger turn it into a laser beam, Ian, but every time you reload you gain 50% more damage!
But how does that work? It still uses the same 5.56 ammunition. Does the rate of fire increase or something?

I never had issues with my assigned M-249. It would shoot blanks just as well as live, either belt or magazine fed.
Still my gun ran great with either barrel.
@@wesdog8975 New magazines (particularly the new springs) definitely contributed to a reliably running mag fed SAW.
