I mean, it's actually probably because he's the one the fanbase as a whole is likely to identify with the least, at least aesthetically. 2-D is the frontman and all the female fans want his dick, Noodle is the one girl and all the male fans want to fuck her (notice how she was emphasized a lot less before she hit puberty?), and murdoc is arguably the main antagonist and yaoi crack-shippers love to ship him & 2-D, so that just kinda leaves Russ as your typical drummer-no-one-gives-a-shit-about. Lot of broad generalizations there, but hey, that's mainstream marketing for ya. It's a lot more equal the deeper you get into the Gorillaz lore, but when it comes to the music videos and stuff people who aren't already fans are gonna see, Russel is just less marketable. But you know, could just be racism.
Okay for starters I adore what you done with this whole piece. To every key detail in the background, to the character's action and how the environment surrounded them almost moves with them, to how well the backgrounds done to the extent it seems almost you can jump in there! Ma oh, man you know how to make it atmosphere so eery and mysterious which leads the viewer in! that mysterious atmosphere is also very fitting for the song and I'm glad to see throughout the video even with tiny things as Russel's walking to the beat of the song, it all coordinates with the song! This atmosphere and environment that you created also leads the viewer and me to question how did the Shadows come about? Why is it coming from 2D eyes?Which also leads us to rewatch the video and find more easter eggs! This also makes it a little bit interactive with the viewers as we can formulate in theorize in the comments! I kinda want to ask will you finish the animation? Animatics are great and all but you can correct the mistakes you made and inconsistancies as well as make the animation flow and perfect some of the effects. Seriously I'd love to see where you take this animation if you ever finish it. There was one thing that kinda weirded me out though, is the animation about Phase 1 Russel and his friends? He was possessed by all of his dead friends before The Grim Reaper came in and kinda took them all out...so...why are they still a problem?
Finally! Somebody acknowledges Russel. I feel like he gets ignored more often than not so it was nice to see an animatic predominantly dedicated to him. Stellar animation and a brilliant effort for your first animatic. So much attention to detail
This song actually suits Russel really well. With the horrible past that he's had, there's probably a strong pull for him to snap and just become evil, to hurt everyone who threatens to hurt him instead of fighting the urge. Combined with the words, this song always gives me the impression of someone who's hurt and trying to not become someone evil, trying to not spread that pain to other people, while their demons, their fears and doubts, prey at their mind, asking to be "let out". It's a cool contrast with Murdoc, too, who let those demons take over to a certain point, hurting people and withdrawing emotionally, so that he can't be hurt himself. He struggles with it and wishes it wouldn't be like that, but that's a story for other songs. Sorry for the essay! Good job with this animation, I love all the effects you used and its style is so much like a music video, instead of just an animation!! Also, your drawing style is very similar to the original, kudos!!

Well now. I must admit, when I first heard Let Me Out, I really didn't like it. I didn't like how much it leaned on recent politics and the whole feel of the song just seemed too edgy for me. But then I saw this. I'm pretty sure it's universally known that one of the main reasons why Gorillaz is considered a masterpiece among modern music is because of its music videos. The original characters taking the place of the actual musicians is a subject all to itself, but the fact stands that the Gorillaz music videos in particular seem to add something more to the music that no live performance or obnoxious dollop of star power can provide. I'm not sure how exactly to describe it. Creativity? Immersion? Mythos? It's probably all of those in combination that make those videos into the strange magic that they are. Therefore, having said this, I am rather pleased to say as well that as far as strange magic goes, this animatic has it in spades. From the perfect emulation of Jamie's style to the moody atmosphere matching the nature of the song to the potent execution of such a simple storyline (Russel gets chased by demons). Also, a couple lovely little details: The fact that the scene changes at the beginning synch up with the bleeped words is perfect. Also, the fact that you made full backgrounds is worth mentioning; I've seen too many animatics that leave them as empty voids of space. Overall, this animatic does so much justice to the song and to the band in general that I honestly can say that it made me like this song more. And if music videos made by the Gorillaz themselves accomplish the exact same thing, then I believe it's fair to say that this animatic quality-wise is perfectly in line with the official videos. Please don't stop drawing, animating, storymaking, or whatever creative actions that resulted in the making of this video; if it serves as any indication, it would be that you have a future in this medium. I wish they would have made more music videos for humanz. I mean if were talking MVs with actual meaning and purpose behind them you got....Saturn barz.. Thats it. This animatic would've been perfect as an actual video and itd mean more Russell whom we don't get to see much of where in which he's the focus.
My own interpretation: The song represents that Russel is sad of being the one band member everyone forgets, he's the least popular one and he's tired of seeing everyone else's faces everywhere, the ghosts seem to be a part of the grim reaper who originally haunted Russel, which is turn has somehow brought Del back into his head, Del is telling him to let him out, "let me out and I can make you known again" but Del caused nothing but trouble to everyone else and Russel doesn't want to unleash his havoc again.

This was put out (approx) this time last year, and yet it seems to tell a possible interpretation, combined with another user's "Charger" animatic, of why 2D and Russ seem so different and Russ is following 2D like a cultist follows the leader or a soldier follows the general (EDIT: in the interviews leading up to "The Now Now", I mean). That's crazy predictive.
Man I've come back and watched this like a dozen times now. How did this only take 3 weeks? It's official Gorillaz quality easy; hell, it's even better than some of their videos. Earlier this year I made a very amateurish Gorillaz animatic music video and was really disappointed to see the music immediately blocked. Not gonna lie, it really hurt, and I was confused because I knew there were fan videos of their songs up that weren't hit by copyright (this is actually the video that most inspired be to begin with). Shame to see they're dropping the hammer on everyone it seems

Indeed. He didn't have any major roles in phase 1 aside from being Del's host and he did practically nothing for phase 2. Then in phase 3 all he did was grow big and swim, so it's nice to see a focus on Russel for a chane

How did this take only three weeks to make, yet looks absolutely stunning. So much effort for all the backgrounds which really helped establish a world/feel for this song, and I really like the incorporation of the other characters while still having Russel as the main focus. It even kind of feels like the way the other characters are introduced eludes to a divide between the band, which would only make the lore WORLD'S more interesting, like if when Russel saw the other members on that screen he thought negatively of them for a moment. It's sad you weren't in Jamie's shoes and could've made this official, because it is stunningly beautiful, has a great story, and is open for interesting and colorful interpretations like mine. Amazing 10/10, makes sense for an amazing song (I really like the voice in the pre-chorus!)

I wish they would have made more music videos for humanz. I mean if were talking MVs with actual meaning and purpose behind them you got....Saturn barz.. Thats it. This animatic would've been perfect as an actual video and itd mean more Russell whom we don't get to see much of where in which he's the focus.

My own interpretation: The song represents that Russel is sad of being the one band member everyone forgets, he's the least popular one and he's tired of seeing everyone else's faces everywhere, the ghosts seem to be a part of the grim reaper who originally haunted Russel, which is turn has somehow brought Del back into his head, Del is telling him to let him out, "let me out and I can make you known again" but Del caused nothing but trouble to everyone else and Russel doesn't want to unleash his havoc again.
I feel like Del was just fucking around during phase 1 and wasn't trying to cause any actual trouble

This was put out (approx) this time last year, and yet it seems to tell a possible interpretation, combined with another user's "Charger" animatic, of why 2D and Russ seem so different and Russ is following 2D like a cultist follows the leader or a soldier follows the general (EDIT: in the interviews leading up to "The Now Now", I mean). That's crazy predictive.
Man I've come back and watched this like a dozen times now. How did this only take 3 weeks? It's official Gorillaz quality easy; hell, it's even better than some of their videos.

Earlier this year I made a very amateurish Gorillaz animatic music video and was really disappointed to see the music immediately blocked. Not gonna lie, it really hurt, and I was confused because I knew there were fan videos of their songs up that weren't hit by copyright (this is actually the video that most inspired be to begin with). Shame to see they're dropping the hammer on everyone it seems

How did this take only three weeks to make, yet looks absolutely stunning. So much effort for all the backgrounds which really helped establish a world/feel for this song, and I really like the incorporation of the other characters while still having Russel as the main focus. It even kind of feels like the way the other characters are introduced eludes to a divide between the band, which would only make the lore WORLD'S more interesting, like if when Russel saw the other members on that screen he thought negatively of them for a moment. It's sad you weren't in Jamie's shoes and could've made this official, because it is stunningly beautiful, has a great story, and is open for interesting and colorful interpretations like mine. Amazing 10/10, makes sense for an amazing song (I really like the voice in the pre-chorus!)
