I’ve never heard more words spoken to describe sanding in my entire life. I’m 67. Impressive. You’re the most exciting skim boarder I’ve seen. Your timing is impeccable. Skimming was rare when I was a gromm. You’ve really brought the sport into the sunshine, well done.
Love the vid Blair. Also please be careful and wear a dust mask while sanding any of your epoxy, carbon fiber, or fiberglass boards as the fibers can get into your lungs and are possibly carcinogenic. I have noticed in one of your other videos while you were at the showroom talking about the different board designs, and I saw you coughing while you mentioned that someone was finishing sanding the rails for another board. Please be careful and keep up the awesome shredding!
@@stcoops Good point. For the finishing/fine stage, you can wet sand with fine wet or dry paper (the same as they use in car body repair shops), which will give you the smoothest finish.
Good video! I have a request for a future video: can you show the differences in a water drop using a speed wax under the skimboard, and without using it? I have noticed you have mentioned a speed wax in a previous video for tricks on sand, but I am really interested in how a speed wax can change a ride on deep water (if it can change). Great channel! Great videos! Don't stop with this work!
I bought some of the wax Blair suggested in another video as well. I don't know if I got a bad batch, but it never dried, and was gone after 2 rides. Do you constantly have to re-apply it while you are in the line-up???
@@af3453 For me it never dried, perhaps I got a bad batch. However, it is faster with it on...I would say 10-20% faster with it on. But it came off in 1 to 2 rides especially if you sand drop. It comes with a round applicator sponge. Once the sponge has a bunch on it, I just kept in a plastic bag on the beach, but a wipe over after every ride gets tedious. I haven't used it in quite some time. (Perhaps I should) But, you've got to be ready for slickness difference and re-apply every time. If you just put it on randomly you won't be ready for it and it will slip out from underneath you...going much faster to the ground. Best of luck if you try it. You can get it off amazon.
These vids are sweet haha. You should go over types of boards that are best for specific areas. I have a 56” Zap Whip that I just got and am using in East Florida skim. I had a 53 pro model exile but it was 5/8 tapered and the rocker was heavy so it didn’t work well on the small waves here. I’d love to see what you all have to say about specific areas and boards that are best there
Another solid vid! Great tips with the sanding, will be helpful if I get a front pad. I finally made it to the beach this year and have tried catching some waves. Not much luck unfortunately, I just slide off when it comes time to turn (even with back pads and wax), but we're gonna keep on trying! Your vids have been super useful and I finally have my 360 shuv down because of them, keep it up!
I know I'm late but if you get a bigger board, that will help. I live on the panhandle of Florida, waves are tiny here. A bigger board is going to help. I got a Dude Cruise! from exile, biggest size I could get. Helps a lot out here.
Glad to see you listen to your community. Anyway, was looking back at the video you guys did at the wedge, and I was wondering if the prototype skim/boogie from Catch Surf is ever gonna be released, because it looks sick! Thanks for the videos

Hi Blair! I'm french, I was thinking if you can make a video about the different skimboard industries. I mainly speak about victoria skimboard, dune skimboard and of course eden skimboard which is a very good french skimboard, by the way, great and beautiful video as usual!
I need help getting a skimboard from exile you really inspired me to skimboard and I live by a lake and Carolina beach. Any skimboard tips, I looked at the ex0 but it said it wasn’t available till may 22
Hey love all your videos great work you're all doing thanks a lot. Would love to see like a workout that supports getting better at skimboarding. Thanks a lot!!
Thanks for the video, great tips! I love the Blairacuda model board (tail design and the carbon), but as a complete beginner (going skimming for the first time on a woodie today!) do you think it would be harder to learn on the Blairacuda vs say an EX1 (I don't want an EX0)? Or in terms of learning to skim properly is there not much difference? Cheers! 😊👍🏻
I'm an east coaster who's just beginning to skim seriously. I was wondering about tips to take a wipeout in the best way. Also tips for taller as in 6’3 skim boarding thanks
Wiping out, you generally just wanna fall, dont try to catch yourself with your hands because you might just sprain your wrists, your back or chest might get scratched up but at least you wont break anything. I got a pretty bad fall recently on my arm and its just a sand burn from my elbow going down my forearm. I'm tall as well, probably around 6'2, and its hard for me to kinda scrunch down and bend my knees for the waves and I've noticed larger boards like 52s are a little easier comparing to something as a 48.
Is there a trick for preventing the tail pad peeling in the back? Do you ever add a small bead of sealant to prevent water and sand from getting underneath there? I'm guessing you want to avoid adding any weight at all to the board, but seems like pads get torn way before they're actually worn.
I just started skimming at the fresh hip and youthful age of 58 (never fear, I have more than 40 years on a skateboard and a good amount of boogie / body surf experience). I got a cheap Wavestorm to learn on. The beaches I have to skim on are pretty rocky/gravelly and i don't really care about banging up the wavestorm, but I'm nervous about getting something nice like a Blaracuda. Talk to me - how much happier am I going to be with a nice board, and how much should I worry about slightly gravelly or rocky beaches?
Lots of Good Off or Goo Gone and patience. I'd try soaking the pad edge first to see if you can get it to lift off, then put more under the lifted edge. Wear nitrile gloves if you can. Be careful of drip, do this in an open area.
I just bought my custom Blaircuda and pumped to use it . I’m gonna put on my let’s party traction pads soon . Do u recommend that I sand the whole board or just the spots the pads are going ?
Hey bro, it would be interesting to say what you did, i just had a new exile board and needs to know the same thing, we dont have goo off here so i am using acetone, what did you use ?
Next time You pick up a board, hit the factory late with a Cold six pack an have it done by Dusty, The Pro Sander! Love the Colours on that board, You would think some Bozo could come up with a clear Deck Grip these days? Great Show.
Hello, I have a little question, when I got my Carbon Fiber last winter, I didnt sand it enough, now I have to glue my pad back together fairly regularly with superglu, should I take off everything, re-sand and glue back together? (If yes, what would be the best glue?) I wish I had this video before !
Thank you. I bought your pro model and it arrives tomorrow. I am sooo excited. Please do a video on timing. Ideas for the video: When to drop for a long side slip? When to drop for big air? What should you be looking for when scanning the swell? What is the difference in timing between waxing and waining High and Low tide. Also, you said that you might get some of your friends (in another video) to help with a monkey drop video. Did anything ever come of that? Thank you in advance.
Thank you a good vid with all the details👍 Btw my board is a zap and the bottom out in the sides the white thing is like beat up what can I do about it
You sand textured boards. When you buy a fiberglass/carbon fiber board, you may choose between glossy or textured finish. If it is textured, you sand it to make sure the pad will adhere appropriately. It is not based on the material, but the surfacing finish instead. Wood boards do not offer textured finish, since it's a higher performance spec that more professional boards may seek; it makes the board lighter.
Hi guys thanks for another awesome vid. I'm trying to figure out what board to buy. I'm 6'2 170 lbs and I'm getting a carbon fiber board for sure. I've had an entry level zap board for years (basically an EX0/EX1 quality) but I'm switching to Exile after watching you guys. I want something that can shred when I go to the east/west coasts but I'm currently located in Michigan so I'd love something that can handle small choppy waves on the great lakes too. I have never skimmed large ocean waves (been to Florida a few times but waves were small) but I am pretty good on my zap and I run fast. I was thinking Retrofish, dude cruise 2.0 or Blairacuda. Which would be best in your eyes and what are the advantages/disadvantages? Is there another i should consider? Read the descriptions on exile already. Thank you so much I can't wait to order my board.

Cruise skimboard and i have 2 questions. 1) How do I know if it has the finishing wax on it or not? and 2) What brand of foam pads is that? i bought back foot pads from the exile website, but all the front foot pads are sold out.
you can tell if it has finishing wax by taking a bit of sand paper to the board and seeing if anything sticks to the sand paper after lightly sanding your board

You can also use wet sandpaper I think because it stops the particles flying up.

This is why I buy from Victoria. No sanding, Go Gone, etc. when you buy a quality board that is glassed properly.
hay blair whats the different with carbon fiber vs fiber glass carbon mix?

I made myself a new skimboard out of wood and it has a lot of flex. Will this affect my skim boarding in anyway
Yes. Wooden boards sink faster when going into deeper water. Fiberglass or a double carbon board travels way better in deeper waters.
I’m in the uk trying to find a good board been using a wooden board but want to get an epoxy board thanks
You probably won’t see this but do you only sand down carbon fiber boards or others like wood?
You sand textured boards. When you buy a fiberglass/carbon fiber board, you may choose between glossy or textured finish. Wood boards do not offer textured finish, since it's a higher performance spec that more professional boards may seek; it makes the board lighter.
is there any prep for the bottom part of the skim? like a layer of wax to travel smoother on the water or something
Debatable.
Try the Speed Wax. Some say it makes a difference, some say it doesn't. YMMV.
Other than that keep your bottom clean and scratch free.
Or Eel Snot
What are some good brands to look for when it comes to pads and speed wax?
C'mon Blair, use a sanding block!
I would really like to learn how to 360’s while floating on water!!
Question. Can the finishing wax be removed by skimming a couple of days on the water? Just a cheap way for "goo" off.
What is the best tick ski boarding brand
I'm easily distracted... that's a beautiful Canary Island Palm in the background.
floor wax on the flat
Or something hydrophobic
Maybe to go faster?
Will it work?
