If Hikaru meant Eric will NEVER have that EXACT position against him again, he would probably be correct. But we all know that's not what he meant. ;)

Its like saying a random gm 2600, beats magnus, the gm isnt on magnuses level. IMs often beat some gms but aren’t on the same level. Same goes for here, not to say eric isnt good but just when it comes to preciese moments, hikaru will winn 70% of the time.
He's on that level of actually being able to beat him, yes. Even if it's 1/20 times.
99.9% of people cant ever beat him, so I guess it's an achievement.

@@Fouriersuir I might get the numbers wrong but I think the ELO is designed to show that a player that has 200 points is going to win against the player with less than 200 points than him 9 out of 10 times. It gets bigger as the gap gets bigger. So I can actually win against Magnus 1 in every 10,000,000 games we play.

Cuz his position was too bad. Eric had two protected passers, a beatiful knight, much more space. Even the bishop pair. What more can you ask of a position? Also Hikaru lost castling rights got a very passive rook on h1 that is gonna take a lot of time to develop, his queen is tied down, his knights have no squares to move to, his bishop is bad. The only thing going for Hikaru is that he got the open b-file which Eric will take over soon with Rb8.

Hikaru is severely crippled.
The biggest weakness (at least from my 2000 ELO eyes) is his king.
Hikarus king is cutting off his rook from entering the game. And his rook is keeping his king in the centre of the board. Giving Eric lots of time to be the aggressor.
Worse still, Eric's bishops will soon do serious damage on the A8/A7 diagonals.
Finally look at how much space Eric is controlling with his c/d pawns +his knight!
Being down a pawn/move can be death sentence at their level, so this is beyond repair
