No one teaches the value of make up and colours like you do! Very much appreciated Alex! For the next look can you do like a sunset eyeshadow look? I saw some amazing looks with Natasha denona's cranberry palette, bit of peach, bit of cranberry, looks amazing!
I learned something today. I am grateful for the lesson; it is rare for viewers to be told to cater to themselves. Many people show us to mimic their techniques, placement etc. it’s so refreshing to hear the opposite of that!
This is incredible. Just the other day I was trying out an eyeshadow look I saw on Emma Stone, because we have similarly hooded eyes (quite a bit of smooth real estate on the hood, very little visible mobile lid), and I figured it could work for my eye shape, and I matched it pretty well, but it ended up looking so effing extra and dramatic and OTT on me, and kinda like I was using double the space and color she was, and it took me a while but I came to the conclusion that the shape was good but the colors were wrong, and now I understand *why* the colors were all wrong for me and how to potentially fix it. Tomorrow I'm definitely giving it another try. Thank you so much!
A true masterclass, not enough people talk about this! Personally, my makeup has never looked better than since I started using colors that have the same intensity as my features, and also I got a color analysis and started sticking to the palette that really suits me instead of following every trend.
Alex you are providing content that no one else is. You are carving/carved a lane for yourself that’s incredible. Its so refreshing to come on youtube and see stuff I’ve never seen before from someone so genuine and relatable. Its actually shocking lol ❤ Awesome job. I enjoyed this !!!!!

Thank you for being on YT! You are incredibly talented and extremely good at teaching and explaining why you place shadow in a specific place, and teaching us about the value in the colour. Your background in painting shines through in a beautiful way. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge and time, so we can look our best! I’m extremely grateful. From a fellow cat mon in Sweden! 💕
I so appreciate as an artist that you talk about nuanced topics like value! It’s so important to talk about and I rarely see beauty people on RUclips discussing it, when understanding value can make or break your makeup looks!
You’re like a makeup scientist from above. I’ll be pulling out all my makeup this weekend and squinting at them one my one in preparation for a trip in a couple weeks. I’m realizing value has been an issue. Thank you, Alex!🫶
Fantastic tutorial! Thank you. Watching YT for 10 years only proves what I already knew: sheer desaturated shades are best for my pale skin, particularly now that my eyelids have all but fallen. I tend to prefer my natural round eye shape and am fine with not wearing a smokey eye … ever. The darkest I can manage is a light mid-tone. Anything darker and I look like a clown. This is what YT and TikTok don’t tell you. Also that it’s not always eye color that determines what color eyeshadow to wear.
I always struggle to tell apart when the harmony comes from value, intensity or saturation but I totally get your point and I' m able to notice unbalance and clashing situations. Amaaaaazing video, as always, especially the fact of how different they are and look. 🧛🏻♀️🖤
I used to hate that my natural coloring is twinning with Snow White, but I appreciate it so much now that I have a better understanding of color because I can wear really dark clothing and makeup without it looking overwhelming or intense. Pastels make me look like an actual corpse, but I can go so hard with dark, grungy eyeshadow and look killer in black, so I'll take it!!
You're so damn considerate of literally EVERYONE'S POSSIBLE APPEARANCE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!!!! From face shape, to skin color, to people's different style preferences!!! It's SO EXTRA AWESOME!!! THANK YOUUUUU!!😅❤
Love this! I have blue eyes and always wanted to wear blue eyeshadow but it never looked right. I realized I needed a blue that's a similar tone to my eye color and the fact that I need a little warm transition to keep it balanced.
I'd be excited to see you educate us on how to choose and apply effortless makeup on other girls, such as a black haired Asian, Black girl etc. It'd help me a lot Alex 🍒
An absolutely perfect approach to flattering makeup. Thank you for keeping it simple and doable. The technique is as important as choosing your colour values.
More about hue and saturation, but this is why I love using colors from within the face to do my makeup. Emphasizing one of my undertones or overtones, etc. Means I end up with a lot of green, mauve, and orange looks, but they're always gorgeous 😅
DO IT ❤ pls do a bright red smoky eye! I'd loooove to see it! Also, I'd like a tutorial on how to incorporate shades that aren't very flattering to your skin tone in a look, I have warm skin and was gifted THE MOST GORGEOUS pressed glitter that's kind of lilac/lavender and I'd just love to wear it all over my lid, but it makes me look dead, so I wanted ideas on how to incorporate it into my makeup
Love the look! Love the insight! With Halloween just a month away, but about being a bit more playful in making some unexpected costume-ish looks, like Carnival glam meets walking dead, or modern day daughter of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, etc. Halloween is such a fun time for those of us who love makeup, and I'd love to see how we can use products we already have to create looks that reflect this enormously fun holiday.
looking flawless, and "perfect" and "effortless" gives me so much anxiety😭 lol .... once i have put myself together and spent HOURS to get flawless, to walk around and hold that look, brings me so much anxiety. idk why. the idea of perfection makes my skin crawl 😄
Well this was excellent! Such a good explanation and makes total sense! I’ve never thought about it in this much detail before so I’m excited to have this knowledge to add to my repertoire And that’s from someone who is rarely finding new things to learn in makeup after 10 years! Love it. Thank you 🙏
I love this video! It makes so much sense. Dark colours look terrible on me and when you said a black liner would look "disconnected" it just made so much sense. At least for these kind of looks. Would you do more picture analysis in the future? You have such a great eye and I love understanding why something works on a specific face and not on another. It makes adapting a look to yourself so much easier!
Your artist's eye makes such a difference!! I get so excited for every one of your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, perspective, and personality :) I love everything
PLEASE. Do a Blue eye makeup look. Looove how it looks on brown eyes and I need some inspo. Also, if you could make it look ethereal, not super sticking I would love you for it.
Wow! Duh! Makes total sense! This is why I feel by best when I use my contour bronzer and highlights as eyeshadow. It’s so cohesive. If I just expand on that for events I’m golden. Thank you!
I am LONGING for some bright purples and blues. Like give me all the saturated hues of the colours people say are difficult to wear, thats my jam. And I'd love to see you do that honestly
This makes so much sense because whenever I try to do a dramatic smoky brown look it looks blended and natural on me since I have dark features- always wondered why
You are so informative and educational! You make things (such as this topic) make sense and when you’re doing a tutorial, you really explain/show detail that a lot of others don’t. I just wanna say you’re so very appreciated and I’ve learned a lot from you over the past couple years. Thank you for what you do!! 🫶🏽
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the level of analysis and depth that you bring to your channel. Thank youuu for the way you respect your audience, never dumbing down your content. You offer real education, grounded in reality. I love the humanity you center here.
I love the way you have broken this down. I made the realization that value was key for a natural smokey eye but had not figured out how to put it in practice so this is perfect! 🎉
you've perfectly explained sth I've been doing intuitively for years. colors that are "too light" look clownish on me and colors that are "too dark" look way too intense for everyday wear. It took ages for me to figure that out and now, I finally know the reason lol. this will be my guideline in the future when shopping for eyeshadow.
This is probably my favorite video of yours. I am still very much a beginner at makeup, and sometimes when I want to try a more bold look it looks too heavy on me especially in contrast with my day to day makeup that Im used to. This makes so much more sense! I feel like this is really helpful for people like me who want to explore new techniques without wearing anything that is too bold or heavy yet. Thank you 🙌🏽
Seriously such great insight. It’s like you put into words something I’ve subconsciously noticed for awhile now in these makeup looks. Seems like such a subtle yet impactful concept to point out that’s actually going to change the way I look at makeup for myself.
The shape of features (+skin tone) is also important. I'm a very fair redhead with soft features, totally pale eyebrows and eyelashes and hooded/close set/slightly protruding eyes with significant undereye circles. It makes me sad but I just cannot do any bold eye looks - they are too overwhelming for my eyes and coloring. I used to be able do do a nice cat eye with green or navy liner on the top of my eyes and it would open them up, but as I've aged and my eyes have gotten more hooded, it just makes them look smaller. Here's what works for me now: always emphasize my eyebrows, use mascara only on my upper lashes, a light concealer or skin tint on the lid, super light taupe eyeshadow on the outer part of my eye and sometimes a little shimmer right in the middle of the eye. It's such a drag, bc I wish I could do all the eye looks I see folks with bigger/more open eyes do. Boo hoo. But it is freeing knowing what looks good on you and why. This was really helpful and at some point it'd be great to see you do this with women in their 40s-50s.
You’re seriously amazing! This all makes so much sense. I am 55, love makeup, have been wearing it for 40 years, and I am good with doing it. I am light to light/med olive with very dark brown eyes and lashes and brows - Almost black. And with med-dark brown hair. My eyes and brows are much darker than my hair. In general we always hear that black eyeliner is too dark or ages people. I look best in black. Not brown. Now I see why it doesn’t look harsh or out of place on my face. Love your videos and the way you teach!
You nailed the example of what you were explaining! I always follow your tips and it elevates my makeup! Could you show a look for someone with dark hair and brows but light green eyes? Maybe like an Angelina Jolie?
Thank you so much for educating us!! I love how black eyeliner and mascara makes my eyes pop but I feel like it's not totally congruous with the coloring of my hair and skin so I appreciate this! Gives me a little extra to think about...
This makes so much sense! I feel like it kind of goes hand in hand with color seasons because that takes into account your overall contrast, coloring, warmth, etc. to make everything cohesive and bring out each persons natural beauty! Like im a soft summer, and I’ve noticed over the years I hate super bold looks on myself because the contrast is very jarring on me (I’m also very pale lol). I look much better with softer cooler colors but I can still wear warm colors if they’re not too bold, bright, etc. Unless of course I wanted to go for a bold look Love love your video 😊

Thank you for this valuable lesson! You're naturally beautiful but your final look is GORGEOUS!!!
You said that so much better than I could! Yes!! ❤
Thank you so much for the diversity of beauties included ❤️
I'm a brown girlie and when I like a mua look, I adapt it with colors I knooow flatter my dark eyes and olive undertone. You put it so well into words, yesss
Same. I mean except im super pale and cool toned. The revelation was a game changer
This is GOLD, ALEX! California gold rush GOLD.
This video deserves an Oscar! On a subject that's so easy to overlook! Thanks so much, Donna
The take away from this video, you gotta squint at stuff 😂😂😂
@@AlexandraAnele😂😑😘🙏
This is one of the most helpful makeup videos I've EVER seen. You explain so well!
I finally understood what “values” were when shown pictures in B&W. Then you don’t see colours any longer but gradients of greys, i.e. values.
Love this! I have blue eyes and always wanted to wear blue eyeshadow but it never looked right. I realized I needed a blue that's a similar tone to my eye color and the fact that I need a little warm transition to keep it balanced.
This is so spot-on!! It's why I have all the bright beautiful palettes and never use them!!! Thank you!!!
Okay now THIS makes so much sense!!! I think I'm using deep cool tones where I need to actually be using more mid-value warms!
Yes! A bright red smokey eye - Pat McGrath Bronze Seduction!
More about hue and saturation, but this is why I love using colors from within the face to do my makeup. Emphasizing one of my undertones or overtones, etc. Means I end up with a lot of green, mauve, and orange looks, but they're always gorgeous 😅
You're an expert in your field, colour theory made easy to understand :)
Really interesting points. It DOES look effortless on you! I’ll have to try this sometime.
You hit the nail on the head by saying do what suits you and don't copy someone else's look. You should get that quote framed! ❤
Because "perfection" doesn't exist. It is a fleeting moment in time. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. Beauty is not flawless IRL.
yes, i'm aware. but that doesn't change my feelings. thanks though 💕@@therealJamieJoy
Well this was excellent! Such a good explanation and makes total sense! I’ve never thought about it in this much detail before so I’m excited to have this knowledge to add to my repertoire And that’s from someone who is rarely finding new things to learn in makeup after 10 years! Love it. Thank you 🙏
TY for this.
You've explained many natural & classic looks, how about updated tutorials on the other essences: romantic, gamine, dramatic, angelic?
This was so well-explained!!! Thank you, Alex!! You are a star!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️
You are so informative and educational! You make things (such as this topic) make sense and when you’re doing a tutorial, you really explain/show detail that a lot of others don’t. I just wanna say you’re so very appreciated and I’ve learned a lot from you over the past couple years. Thank you for what you do!! 🫶🏽
I always love how you are teaching us how to be iconic in our own lives and in our own skin/hair/bodies You are so real and so good
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the level of analysis and depth that you bring to your channel. Thank youuu for the way you respect your audience, never dumbing down your content. You offer real education, grounded in reality. I love the humanity you center here.
I appreciate how you tackle makeup coming from a different perspective than myself, so I always learn something new. Love your videos! ❤
This makes so much sense. I think I can see how to modify my colors to work for me.
Appreciate the new perspective on makeup that you bring, these videos are amazing, keep 'em coming..! ❤😊
Alex you are so ahead of the masses! One year later and this is now very viral and filter on TikTok and all over everyone's FYP.
Literally ANY chappell roan looks PLEASE she's so creative 😍😍😍
This is probably my favorite video of yours. I am still very much a beginner at makeup, and sometimes when I want to try a more bold look it looks too heavy on me especially in contrast with my day to day makeup that Im used to. This makes so much more sense! I feel like this is really helpful for people like me who want to explore new techniques without wearing anything that is too bold or heavy yet. Thank you 🙌🏽
Seriously such great insight. It’s like you put into words something I’ve subconsciously noticed for awhile now in these makeup looks. Seems like such a subtle yet impactful concept to point out that’s actually going to change the way I look at makeup for myself.
color season theory! makeup that suits my deep autumn palette makes me look effortless and sultry 🫶🏽
I feel the same way as a deep autumn also‼️
The way that you explain makeup theory is so easy to digest and understand and I appreciate it so much!
Love this breakdown, had so many “Ah ha!” moments, thank you!!
I’m an early 20s makeup beginner and I’m so grateful for your channel ❤❤ you always make things so clear and you don’t faff around about stuff
As a white white blonde girl, thank you for explaining why i hate dark colors on me beyond "it looks dramatic"
💯
You are absolutely awesome Alex! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us in such a beautiful way. Bravo my friend. I loved this video!
Thank you. This makes so much sense.
Please do all the celebrity looks. Do all the fun and colorful looks!!
Thanks for not shoving expensive products down my throat and teaching us how to feel pretty with what we have
Watched this last night and then did a lot of squinting as I put on my make up this morning. The compliments have been rolling in!
A couple of minutes in and Alex is explaining how come her NYE look from a year or two ago was soooo stunning with only subtle champagne colors!
Beautifully done and explained I’ve never seen or heard anybody explain it like that it makes so much sense.
Love the crisp sound of your videos ✨️ Thank you for teaching us things Alex!
Thank you! I have my boyfriend to thank for the sound quality so I'll let him know 😂 🙌🏻
You nailed the example of what you were explaining! I always follow your tips and it elevates my makeup! Could you show a look for someone with dark hair and brows but light green eyes? Maybe like an Angelina Jolie?
This was really interesting and informative. Love the artistic explanation of value when choosing makeup. Love it!😊
My Kitty Cat loves watching makeup videos with me. She especially likes the cat eye look.
I can‘t thank you enough for all your super precious tutorials 🙏❤️
Unless of course I wanted to go for a bold look
Love love your video 😊
Colours pleaaaase! Autumn colours with many colours! Go as crazy as you feel like. I love when you do that!
