- After a shortened summer running season, the Isle of Wight Steam Railway wrapped up their peak season with their annual 'Autumn Gala' - a final weekend of intense running before the winter downtime sets in.
Three locomotives took the the rails, operating the regular red timetable with added shuttle services around Havenstreet. Ivatt 2MT - 41298 rubbed shoulders with 'Terrier' Class - W11 "Newport" (name not carried) to work the timetable, travelling the full line length between Smallbrook Junction and Wootton. Ivatt tank - 41313 spent most of the day working the Havenstreet shuttles, before replacing W11 on the Victorian 4-wheeler set and venturing out across the line.
The railways' oldest carriage, 1864 built IWR 3-Compartment Composite Coach - No10, featured in the 4-wheeler set. The carriage was one of 24 built by Oldbury Carriage and Wagon Company Ltd, for the opening of the then brand new Isle of Wight Railway between Ryde and Shanklin. No10 was relaunched into traffic in 2017 following an extensive restoration, now seeing limited use on the line, mainly for special events.
Locomotives:
BR(M) Class 2MT Tank - 41298
Ex-LB&SCR A1X 'Terrier' Class - W11
BR(M) Class 2MT Tank - 41313

Nice video, at 74 with mobility problems and living up t,'north, I would love visit the IOW, happy memories from 30+ yrs ago!
It looks like very nice line to visit .
Thanks very much. It's a wonderful line to visit - hopefully one day you can make the trip.
Awesome footage, in an era being social distant, these types of carriages seem to be quite fashionable at the moment.
Really enjoyed your video. This is a railway that has been on my "must visit" list for some time. I love the unique and beautifully turned out rolling stock; such a welcome change from the usual MK.1's! Thanks for posting.
Thank you. It really is worth the trip - such a beautiful place to visit.
Really beautiful filming. A lovely record of the day - weather lovely too. Particularly nice for me - I was driving 41298!
Thanks very much! Hope you had a good day on the footplate.
Lovely to see such a great railway up and running. Been a member there for years but not visited for a long time. Thank's for a great video
Thanks very much!
An absolute delight!
Thank you
Great to see 4149 (The SECR BRake) in use as the Brake coach on the Bogie Set, used to the our Sleeping Car in my early days of volunteering on the Island in the 1970's, and even more so to see the Oldbury coach in use on the 4 wheel set. It's just a pity that the Ivatt's, with no real connection to the Island (BR were going to transfer Standard 2MT's) can't at least be named for example, at least its good to hear the panting of the Westinghouse though. Really great footage of this cracking preserved railway which sets standards for others to follow.
Had some nice footage in here, really enjoyed the watch and look forward to what other railway related videos you upload in future. Have both Liked & Subscribed. 😀👍
Thank you very much, cheers.
Brilliant shots had a week on the IOW about 8 years ago and stayed at Shanklin the railway was lovely and well run and the stock a treat compared with a lot of neglected BR mk 1s on other preseved lines,Calbourne was not running on my visit but travelled behind Freshwater it was a treat
Thanks Brian
IOW has the best restored carriages of any preserved railway!
Thanks. The IoWSR certainly do put their best into all of their stock - be it locomotives or carriages and wagons. It's always a pleasure to visit the line.
Stunning Footage 😎👍
Thanks very much
At last, the IOW gets some air time, well done sir👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 This is one of the best run, well turned out and friendly preserved lines in the country. Little old Terrier with vintage stock is just timeless but I always think the Ivatts are a bit brutish and out of place - they aint quaint enough!!!!! Top marks for this❤
Thanks very much, it's been a while coming - plans for a trip earlier in the year had to be cancelled due to finances. They certainly put on a show, with immaculately turned out locomotives and rolling stock. The Terrier with the 4-wheel set is always a pleasure to see - though I do agree about the Ivatt tanks, at least they take the strain off of the smaller locos when required.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel If the old £p is the case then even more thanks and appreciation are needed, you've certainly gone out of your way these last few weeks to bring us steam lovers some great vids, it is much appreciated for us stay indoors types!!!😷 👍🏻❤
Thanks very much for the kind words, they mean a lot. These days out can end up getting quite expensive - very much worth it though.
Lovely shots there! Nice to see some 2mts in action!
Thank you. A first for me, seeing this pair in action.
excellent shots of isle of wight railway👍 I went on it in 1992
Thanks very much!
Fantastic video my friend and excellent locomotive my friend !!!! Greetings from Argentina 👍😎
Greetings! Glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank you for posting this; I'd planned on going over this weekend for the gala but other things got in the way. Now I don't feel as though I've missed it😊
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Sorry you couldn't make the event.
One of those vintage carriages used to be owned by my in-laws at a holiday cottage near the cliff tops at Colwell Bay.
I was on Newport for it’s first time it passed you I was the guy waving lol. Cheers to see you on the way!👍
3rd carriage, 2:57? Sorry I didn't wave back, was too busy looking at the camera. Hope you had a good day.
@@TheSouthernerYTChannel That is correct.
Very cool video :)
Thank you
Lovely footage! Do these steam trains still ride on the isle of wight during today?
(Ment overall. Exclude corona lol.)
Thank you. The heritage railway runs between Smallbrook Junction and Wootton. See their website for their latest news and running days: iwsteamrailway.co.uk/
I spy that you have visited the Packsfield level crossing!
While the Ivatts may seem out of place there is the suggestion that had BR decided to beef up the steam locos on the island then the Ivatts would have been the choice. The IWSR being a victim of its own success needed to find more powerful locos and did a deal to bring them to the island. Both needed restoration before returning to traffic so it was a win-win. Sadly the Terriers and 02 can't keep up with demand on their own and haven't been able to for some time. Not surprising really given their small size and advanced age, W11 Newport is 142 years old! Towards the end of BR service the heavy tourist trains similar to but a bit longer than the train 41298 was working were generally double headed by 02's.
It was more than a "suggestion" although the actual machines proposed were the very closely derived British Railways version which had a narrower cab. Eastleigh works designed an arrangement for the air brake (neater than that used on the O2s) which was very useful half a century later!
The 2 Ivatts are probably the most modern locos on the IOW. What's with the orange coach at 2:54 ?
With the exception of the Austerity Saddle Tanks, Class 03 and Class 05 also based on the IoWSR. 1864 Oldbury built coach - more details in the video description, or see here: iwsteamrailway.co.uk/heritage/our-rolling-stock/carriages-wagons/four-wheeled-carriages/
Excellent shots showing the heritage rolling stock of the IWSR .l hope you do not mind l have taken the liberty to share the film on our unofficial face book page :- IWSR C&W happenings
Thanks very much for your kind words. Not a problem at all, and thank you for notifying me - it's appreciated. You all do a fantastic job.
