  • "One could only pity those who worked here," thought the captain of the expedition when he first glimpsed the sharp spires of North Point. They seemed to emerge out of nowhere, the fog having accompanied the scientific reconnaissance module and its crew for many miles. The crew hadn't noticed anything yet; all eyes were fixed on the onboard equipment-numerous monitors and their backup analog sensors. The captain had ordered them to take this matter more seriously than usual, and the crew didn’t argue. Everyone understood that landing on a world with solid ground was one thing, but water worlds were entirely different. No one fully trusted the life detectors, as any fool knew that in the search for life, we always relied on well-studied known species. Human imagination… well, it could conjure up things beneath the ever-placid surface of Europa that made every crew member consider a career change.
The captain was surprised that the fog dissipated so quickly once they reached their destination. Especially since all other weather sensors displayed stable, flat lines on their graphs-the weather here was that stable. Suddenly, the physicist reported that they had entered a small magnetic anomaly and added that it seemed to envelop them, affecting only the external world. The captain tensed. "Where is its center?" he asked. After a moment, the physicist said that the center was right under the North Point towers. That was just perfect. The captain glanced at the ship's contractor and his sycophantic buddy, the know-it-all who had obstructed the captain's attempts to negotiate better risks and raise the contract price during the flight from Antares. "He’ll probably say something smart to justify the magnetic anomaly," the captain thought, deciding not to argue again and risk looking foolish. But the gamble was worth it, even given the current conditions. He was eager to finally replace the old ship hanging high in orbit, which only signaled its existence with a blinking intercom light, with something that would allow for a less risky lifestyle. The memory of the new luxury-class deep-space excursion yacht, Saud Kruger "Leviathan," resurfaced. The contractor was indeed an experienced archaeologist, the captain thought. Ironically, there were only two of them and minimal equipment. "I know where the treasure lies; don’t worry. It’s just a matter of reaching the site, and the whole operation will take no more than a couple of hours," he had claimed. Yeah, right, thought the captain. But now he saw their calmness and realized how accurate their coordinates were. It was strange how they reacted so calmly to finally arriving. Well, never mind; these collectors… their heads were full of nothing but old, dust-covered items that inexplicably cost a fortune.
"Initiate docking procedures. The physicist stays on board to monitor the magnetic field. Underwater drone operators, begin surveying the surroundings. The rest of you, prepare for docking and subsequent disembarkation," the captain commanded.
How this place could have once been a profitable resort, the captain still couldn’t understand, especially since even on the promotional brochures from that forgotten century, it looked just as gloomy. Escapism turned into business... strange, we are. People.
"Alright, let’s finish this and get out of here as soon as possible."
