Wow this one greatest classic hit show. Lots great memories. Rest In Peace Penny Marshall. So beautiful Penny and Rosie singing together. Thank you. Awesome show.
yup. First knew of both of them from THE ODD COUPLE....Garry from the Odd Couple's subway episode, along with Jack Gilford and Scatman Crothers, and Penny as "Myrna Turner". Garry and surviving sister, Ronnie, played Myrna's siblings in her final episode as Oscar's secretary....where she married 'Sheldn', played by her 10 year husband in real life, Rob Reiner. The Marshalls and Reiners lived about 3 blocks away from where I sit, 3 blocks from the northernmost buildings on the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.
Ahhh! I totally remember that Barry Manilow Special! He was my dude back then, and of course I loved Laverne and Shirley, so this was so cool to me that she was his guest on this show. She also had another skit with him, she was a waitress and he was a lounge pianist, and they were closing up the bar and having a heart to heart conversation or something.. lol. I wonder if that's on youtube....
I like the late Penny Marshall more and more since her loss. She was humorous and quite intelligent. She succeeded without the sitcom one-liners which fueled the films of her brother Gary Marshall. Of course, once a mainstream director hits the age of seventy, it is nearly impossible for that person to get bonding to direct. Clint Eastwood has his own complicated deal with Warner's and Woody Allen's films are primarily foreign financed. What both surprises and saddens me is that Miss Marshall was notorious for her substance abuse, but still was able to do quality work for a couple of decades. I think a solid director in his or her seventies may still have much of quality to offer. I read from several news sources that one of Marshall's closest friends, the also-late Carrie Fisher, begged Marshall to curtail her wild lifestyle, but at that point Penny was physically ill and beyond reason. You know you're in trouble when Carrie Fisher tells you to cut down on the cocaine. I am saddened because Marshal's later films had become more intimate and adult (though not the financial blockbusters of former days) and I had hoped she'd last long enough for one more act. It is sad.
Nothing like Penny Marshall, so so so so talented! What a gift she was!
