Great album. I have it on vinyl. Saw him in concert, Birmingham U.K. He was fantastic & Tony Levin’s bass playing was phenomenal. I agree with much of what Pete says but I also like Love Can Heal. Panopticon is my favourite track though.
My preference is the dark side. Great album from start to finish.
4.5 …love those slow ones . Especially the lyrics .
Just listened to it the other day. Yeah great album overhaul..I haven't bought it yet but will get the Bluray version with the ATMOS mix to play on my surround sound system. He sure put a lott of time working on this one. Hard to believe it's been 20 yrs. Highly recommended for PG fans and at least a listen is a must even if you're not.
A very good album! I like it
Saw him in Philly, last member of Genesis I needed to see live! I give this 4.5/5. Agreed with everything you said, from favorite songs to mix preference. Really pleasant surprise!
I have been really enjoying this one! I tend to agree with you, Pete, in that I find I prefer the Bright Side Mix for similar reasons. But both are great and the songs are strong overall. Love it!
Not weeks Pete, he's been releasing them since February or something like that. Drove me crazy! I like to listen to the whole album, same as you, but it was no way to avoid seeing the clips and hearing the songs at through the year. what can we do ...
There is no such thing as patience in America anymore......MUST HAVE NOW, ENTERTAINE ME AT ONCE, MY JOY LEVELS ARE FADING....
I need to buy this for Christmas
😄Yea, I too waited for cd to come out to listen✨GREAT ALBUM
Great review as always, and congrats on the 90 thousand subscribers 👏🏻
Great review as always! I just started listening to this and have only heard the bright mix. Like you I think the material is strong. His voice sounds great and there are no real weak songs, but I just find the album a bit too laid back. But like I said, I have just started listening to it and still have to listen to the dark mix!
Saw him in Milwaukee and he performed most of this album and I enjoyed it immensely. The title track is his best song in ages-by far my favorite from the album. Probably my album of the year.
I bought the 2 cd version a couple days ago. I have heard many reviews and your review is very similar to other reviews. I saw Peter live in L.A. years ago and he was awesome. I have most of his discography and dig his music a lot.
Four kinds of horses is the stand out track for me. The first half is beautifully moody and solemn and just when you think this is as good as it gets the final three minutes takes it to another level.
My favorite track as well
The bluray "inside mix" is pretty amazing in ATMOS.
I live in the richest country in the world, and I know nobody with an ATMOS system. Surround sound came and went, and it is not really prioritised. I'm back listening to stereo. ATMOS will be gone. Just wait, and don't say that I told you.
Great albums, both mixes. I especially like Love Can Heal. The soundscapes are amazing. Peter Gabriel is a true innovator!
Totally agree with most of what you've said Pete. My personal fav is Four Kinds of Horses. I also was a bit disappointed with the latter part of the album, but hoping they will grow on me. For the most part the album is superb. Can't stop listening to it.
4/5.
I too tend to wait for the complete album vs listening to the songs when they are individually released. I did that with the latest Stones record as well.
Saw him in Cleveburg, Oh......outstanding show and performance! If you have a chance to see him---make sure you do....and yes, this album is REALLY great. Gabriel fans will love this album.
The Dolby Atmos immersive (Inside-Mix) is now on Apple Music, it’s supposed to be a great mix of that version, I’m going to listen to that mix this week with the Atmos compatible headphones I have, looking forward to hearing that version.
This is a good album that will take some repeated listening for many so to really really enjoy from just one play
Absolute gem of an album.
Great album!!! I saw him live at the forum in Los Angeles. Before the I/o album came out. Great show it was!
I'm loving this album more with each listen. I also prefer the bright mix, but that could change later. My wife and I saw PG back in October and he performed nearly every song off of the album, along with many long time favorites. Whether he's performing live or in the studio, his voice hasn't diminished at all, despite being 73 years old. And he's still a creative force. A solid four stars for me, but that could increase over time. Still to come on my best of '23 list.
Nice review Pete, easily a top two album release of the year for me, some stunningly beautiful songs on this album
I love this album. I picked up the 3 disc set with the Atmos mix. The Atmos mix might be my favorite but I think they are all good. I didn’t listen to any of the “full moon” releases. Wanted to go in fresh and I’m glad I did. Great review Pete.
How's are the height channels used? What's your ATMOS setup config? Are you using the ATMOS mode or an upmixer mode like Auro3D ?
Really curious to see what Pete makes of this! I love it, I think the songwriting is of a really high level, great melodies and plenty of hooks!
I haven't heard an album this year that covers so many emotions.
Road to Joy is my favorite track. I saw him in Pittsburgh on this tour. It was phenomenal!
I think if you added a bit of frog croaking to "Road to Joy" you would have "Kiss that Frog - Part two".
I prefer the dark mix. 4.5 for The Captain excellent album.
Good call, Captain.
Thanks for this thorough review, Pete! I've already spent my music budget for this month and am greatly enjoying those prog-rock and jazz purchases (thank you, Ken Golden!), but I will definitely be buying this much-anticipated release next month! Like you, I'm waiting until I can hear the whole album to listen to any of the songs, but Peter Gabriel is an artist I've loved for most of my fifty years, and I don't think this one will be an exception!
PG's vocals are superb. The album is good/very good, not quite ready to call it a great album, perhaps more listening makes it a great one...YMMV
Great album - my review would be very similar. I love “So Much”.
The song So Much resonates with me so much in my life at 60 already-losing my wife 13 Years agp . His voice is still so strong
Best album of 2023 IMHO. ‘Live and Let Live’ is my favorite track. Saw him in LA in October and he was spectacular!!
Absolutely no problem with being old skool, I am totally with you.
Surprisingly good!!!
The only song where I clearly prefer one mix over the other is the title track "I/O." I like the bright side mix of this song much better than the dark side mix.
With This is Home I clearly warmed to the bright side mix more.
Saw him at the last show on the tour. It was one of the best shows I've been to in years.
Nice review. I love the whole album, it's one of his best in my opinion. I prefer the Dark Side mix. it sounds a little more organic and the bass and drums are more up front. The sound quality on the vinyl is terrific
I`ll pick up the vinyl as a Christmas gift to myself. Not sure what version yet. Seen him in September here at home in Ottawa Canada. Wonderful concert. Gabriel Levin Katche and Rhodes. That`s an amazing lineup if there ever was. I only wish Daniel Lanois would have been involved in the recording and or mixing.
Excellent record! I’ve talked about it a few times on my channel too. I just love it so much.
Solid 4 out of 5 from me. I agree with you about the bright side. I was definitely connecting with that mix more. With the exception that I gravitated toward the dark side mix for "Panopticom"
Olive Tree should be a big hit. Very uplifting and catchy.
I absolutely love this album, been listening to both the dark-side and bright-side mixes of it. This may or may not stick, as new album infatuation is real. Any of you ever feel that? Anyways, at the moment, I have it as my third favorite of his after So and 1980 (Melt).
Great album and saw the tour in Dallas.
Pete, the album is a great one. When I first heard i/o I was like what is this but on many listens, I’m enjoying the song now. I like both mixes. Your friend Bill
Personally, i prefer the dark side mixes, but both are great.
For me his best album since Us. Did not care at for the 3 albums in between.
Great review, pretty much agree with it 100%!
I would say 4.5 for me. One of his best.
Got the 2 CD + blue ray on order. Blue ray has a 7.1 Dolby Atmos mix
Love it a great album wasn’t sure what to expect but really love it 👍❤️
Since his last studio album in late 2010 "Scratch My Back".
Long live the old school.
iHe actually released a new song every full moon. alternate mixes came out on the new moon. So, it took a full year for 12 songs to be released. The inside(surround sound) mix is the best one. You hear all the instruments more well deifined. j
I also waited for the full album. I knew about the songs being released throughout the year. I also agree, the album loses steam for the last half. In the way of mix preference, interestingly its exactly 50-50 between light and dark for me.
I'm right with Pete P on this one. Peter sounds great, album runs out of steam in the back half (not bad songs, just not as catchy as the front half) I haven't listened to each mix enough to tell much of a difference.
Wonderful release. Perhaps make some notes and bullet points before the broadcast? 😉
Yeah, I really don’t like the trickle cuts release method of album promotion/release these days, as an arts promoter myself too (and musician).
IN old days you started with singles that had a b side not on the album. Ref Who and Clash (Your favorite band )
I’m really liking this album. Easy top 5 of the year for me.
It is OK in my opinion. Most of the hooks I have heard before from PG. It better than UP, but after all this time, I was hoping for a bit more.
Further comment, despite the second half not working for me as much as the first half, the song "So Much" connects with me...
...there's so much to aim for
You can shoot at the sun
But all of it just comes and goes
There's only so much can be done
Time slips in the mirror
As an old man, I was born
But I've grown to be a baby
With a halo and a horn
Burn up like a lightning bolt
All gone within a flash
You look around to find a home
Where the asteroid will crash
Oh, there's so much to live for
So much left to give
This edition is limited
There's only so much can be done
The body stiffens, tires and aches
In its wrinkled, blotchy skin
With each decade, more camouflage
For the wild eyed child within
Now close your eyes for a moment
Look down and look above
All the warmth inside of you
Comes from those you love
Not a big lyric guy, but these are amazing IMO.
This one is too mellow, no bombast to balance it. More edges have been sanded off on this album than in Steely Dan's entire catalog. Has Peter Gabriel invented "yacht prog"? I assume "Panopticon" is Sussudio's grandchild's name.
I'll give it a few more spins, but so far it does come across a bit tame.
Is it classic genesis or classic Peter Gabriel
A solid 4 out of 5
Can't say i was particularly impressed sorry
Not terrible but nothing exceptional but I will say his voice is still good
Anyone compare the cd to lp?
RUBBISH SELLS!
O look! It's Gabriel laughing all the way to the bank at the so called experts.
Pete said at the beginning LYRICS @2:21...there is NO lyric sheet, I'm extremely disappointed. He's listed every single person that had some participation, the last 3 pages reads like the credits from a movie...who the fuck cares and I'll bet no one even reads past the first couple lines...he's filled up each page for each song with names of people that participated which could. have and should have been used for the lyrics. I agree with Pete about the timing of release PG released a song a month which was a real disappointment even touring without having the album released I don't know if I've ever heard of that before pretty bass ackwards. I saw his show when it came to my city and all the songs from I/O were performed but I was disappointed in the sound quality of this concert very bright sounding, this album though is very well mixed and sounds fantastic but the way PG chose to release it has been (for me) a extreme disappointment NOT because of the music but after hearing each song dribble out once a month was kind of a letdown especially knowing all the songs for the album were "in the can" which really takes away from this release.
I bought the 2cd and bluray release, honestly I don't know if I'll ever get around to listening to each "mix" 20+ years I've waited and pretty much a let down IMO
I think maybe the 2cd version has lyrics, but the 2cd and bluray version, which you and I have, doesn't. The lyrics are on PG's website, though.
What did I want to say about this album, yet? . . . Ohh, you'll excuse me, . . . supper's ready!
Doesn' t work for me, this album. Not in any mix.
Thank you for the review. Sounds interesting but I'll pass; it comes in a Digipak, actually, worse a Digi sleeve.
IT is okay...
Greetings from the UK-England....When Americans call music "Art Rock" i shudder in anticipation of how much "Rock" is actually on the album ?...After being-virtually force fed-these songs by an old friend (who won't be a friend much longer at this rate) I have to say that sadly Peter Gabriel is just as pretentious, bland, beige, muso and boring as he was going right back to his debut solo album, his penchant for musical navel gazing and being innocuous would give Radiohead-another non Rock band-a run for their money.
Hey, man ,
I dig you...
But I didn't subscribe to hear you say
"Buh, buh, buh buh buh.
Peace on earth.
Two mixes, how dumb. Why?
I found it boring
Unfortunately its a miss from me. Its just quite boring.
