I love it when I come across a Pro on youtube, like finding gold. Thank you. I was a Mobile Diesel Mechanic 01-03, just long enough to realize I liked being an Master Auto Mechanic better, lol.
Hey Mr. Stephen good morning I know this is an old video but stuff like this never gets old, this is basics one on one, But it’s always appreciate it because I’ll tell you what some of us fall on grass and we eat our own grass if you know what I mean, 👋👌👍👍😆😆😆😆😆😆
Great video - I have a buddy who's venturing into diesel stuff - he bought a bus and wants to live in it. He got a no start situation and the filter was nasty and the separator was full of junk - sent him this video to show him how to get going after he got those changed out since there's no primer on his 07 M2 Business Class Style Mercedes Engine.
Your video just helped me 👊💪. As a RUclipsr myself there's nothing better than finding what you are looking for on RUclips and it working out perfectly.
Thanks so much for this video. I’m at work working on this same style truck. First time on my own and mine just would not start. Thanks for making a great video explaining the process.
THIS VID is all you should need to know for a basic 'ran it dry, re-prime and start' situation. Easiest 1st step you can try. I always wondered what that plastic cap WAS for. THANKS
This video helped me now I have a better understanding when I have to do fuel filter changes and oil change on frieight liner 2019 2020 garbage trucks.
There is a little lever on the metal base of the plastic piece you use to drain the diesel . Don't Drain It Below Top of Metal Base!!!!! Take off plastic globe change change OringS around threads of globe# 1 and threads of black top #2.
Fill the fuel / water separator to the top and tighten the fill cap up . Leaving the cap off will not draw fuel into the bowl . One time is enough , raise idle to 1200 RPM’s for 3 minutes . Apply Vaseline to the “O” ring and the fuel bowl collar’s thread .
You do know that you don't have to tighten the filter ring and cap down with tools. If you snug them down by hand, there is much less likelyhood of damaging the ring or the cap. I have had mechanics tighten them so tight that I damaged the ring trying to get it off using the wrench. Whomever taught mechanics to do this needs to reassess their career and ability.
@@scod3908There actually is a wrench , basically hand tighten , clean and lubricate ( O ) rings . The large sealing ring is placed under the lip of the bowl not the collar . 6/3/23
After it starts crack the top cap and let the level go down, then tighten it back up so owner doesn't accuse one of not changing the filter. It's clearly shown in the instructions.
Just what I thought the O-ring was leaking on the new filter you can see it's sucking air in read instructions before installing filter the first mechanic should have did that and properly installing an O-ring so the engine won't suck air into the system
hey stephan great video, wondering if you can give further information on the other return lines you were speaking of and how to go about removing air trapped in them, would help me out alot thanks
Watch for corrosion jacking that can crack the Davco filter housing as its aluminum and the frame is steel. Can cause it to suck air and truck will shut down.
I have the same problem with my truck but it never start. It do suck up the fuel in the fuel filter but never starts and the fuel from the tank it never goes in the fuel filter. Was told it could be the computer
Hi I have a question, did you unloosen the line from the fuel pump? I know you said to unloose it, but I didn't see you unloose it. Great video thanks!
My 2009 freightliner cascadia 60 series it don't turn over I think it's has air in it . I didn't feel that fuel separator all the way up and I tried to crank it ,it's just turning . Can you please help me? Thanks
We have ran on empty tanks, not the truck will only start when I add the fuel from the top of the glass oil filter, when I close the cap the fuel level drops when truck idle, the it shuts off, I add the fuel again and it runs for little,, not sure why the fuel won’t stay in the ball
I go navistar 13. It will run all day no problem. After turning it off it will lose prime. No fuel showing in davco. Changed check valve in inlet of Davco inlet line. Fill up and prime and starts. Turn off and fuel is not showing in davco. Can prime and it will start up after a bit. Will not start up after 1-2 minutes after shutting down. Any ideas?
I have a unit that the fuel lines are on top of the f/w separator and they filled the bottom bowl and left the top empty and the unit sucked in a good amount of air, do I need to bleed it the same way?
What about the fuel water separator? Thought that was the separator? Is it the same thing? Sorry I know this should be a no brainer, I’m in diesel college but as of right now we are online. Just trying to familiarize myself with Diesel engines so I don’t struggle as much when I get a job.
Hey question, my truck is taking forever to start (d13) and it stays misfiring. I got some bubbles in the tank. But her i open the the priming pump it came lose. Do you think its soaking air ? Or my problem is injectors and cups?
The other mechanic sucked if he can’t prime a series 60 ……….. the one that really sucks is a Mercedes 4000. It primes totally different than any other engine. But if you know the trick it’s pretty easy
What do you do when the filter is full but as soonest you start the truck the pump is taking the diesel from the filter and the filter is not filling up back
I drove a detroit s50 500+ miles and then in the morning it wouldn't start. Previous owner mentioned he had to do this every cold start, what would cause that?
I have a question I'm hoping you have an answer for. So I had a mechanic replace the fuel filter on my 09 freighliner DD15. It has been updated to the 2 fuel filter system. After they replaced the fuel filter, it did not start. After they diagnosed the issue, the conclusion was the fuel module was the problem. My question is, are they at fault for the fuel module being damaged after fuel filter change or is that a common occurrence? Thanks in advance
There is a special tool you have to use to prime the system on Detroit’s, otherwise you will have issues. They also recommend changing the oil and filter first then start it. Then change fuel filters
I love it when I come across a Pro on youtube, like finding gold. Thank you. I was a Mobile Diesel Mechanic 01-03, just long enough to realize I liked being an Master Auto Mechanic better, lol.
Thanks for actually explaining how the filter works.
Hey Mr. Stephen good morning I know this is an old video but stuff like this never gets old, this is basics one on one, But it’s always appreciate it because I’ll tell you what some of us fall on grass and we eat our own grass if you know what I mean, 👋👌👍👍😆😆😆😆😆😆
Your video was the only one that was able to get my box truck to start. Thank you so much.

Great video. Especially the part at the end about siphoning fuel.
Thank you. Mine isn't the same filter but followed how you did it and saved myself a mechanic!!
Filter change is easy. Managing issues after filter change is a hell of a task.
Tons of knowledge given, thank you!
Mr.Stephen Cox u are the bast i watch u all the way in the Bahamas. My name is Mr. Jay Cox 🙏
Isn’t it interesting how everything works out at the end patience and repetitions and paying attention to detail, 👋👌👍👍👍
Thank you for this video. I had the exact same problem and this video fixed it. 👍👍👍👍👍👍thank you again
I’m having the same problem and I can now see where I’m going wrong.. appreciate it🤝🏾🤝🏾
THIS VID is all you should need to know for a basic 'ran it dry, re-prime and start' situation. Easiest 1st step you can try. I always wondered what that plastic cap WAS for. THANKS
Good video. Btw not to mention that most newer engines have a glow grid, similar to a glow plug.
Man thanks!! Saved me from calling road side. definitely worked 💪
Answered the question I was looking for. My fluid is low so I got nervous and thought I was supposed to be full but low is good. 👌🏾👌🏾 thank you.
What happens if the filter does go empty when trying to start?
@@esidororangel263 keep refilling it with fuel
Good job! Man
Finally somebody knows what. He is talking about
Thank you very much! Now is my turn to go to work in my.
tractor .
Lol just made a mistake, air in lines, thank you and god bless you
Well informed video. Thank you for recording this with your troubleshooting. 🤙
You just save my life sir thanks

Sure just helped me out of service call 👍, appreciate it man!!!!!
Diesels are strange beasts. I have a generator, hope it never runs out of fuel.
Thank you for showing on video about diesel fuel system
Thank you. Very informative. Especially how to start a siphoning!!! Gawd I hate diesel or gas in the mouth! You ROCK bro!
Thank you guy
very iliustrative
good mechanic......... and good teacher.
woooouuuu!!!!
Make sure you get as much fuel splashed inside the engine bay as you can. Very important..

Love & thanks for the vlog bro, it helped me a lot 🍻🍻🍻

Thanks so much it's really helpful but what causes the fuel to dry off in 24hours parking after changing the filter?
9:24 air bubbles means the O-ring was not on correctly or was not tightened allowing air to be sucked in.
hey stephan great video, wondering if you can give further information on the other return lines you were speaking of and how to go about removing air trapped in them, would help me out alot thanks
Tanx, dats wat giving me a headache here bro❤
Watch for corrosion jacking that can crack the Davco filter housing as its aluminum and the frame is steel. Can cause it to suck air and truck will shut down.
And by the way I love your certified fuel container, 👋😆😆😆
Really easy to unload ! Thanks
Thanks for sharing some tricks
I have the same problem with my truck but it never start. It do suck up the fuel in the fuel filter but never starts and the fuel from the tank it never goes in the fuel filter. Was told it could be the computer
the ground saturated with fuel and the fuel weeping around the top of the filter housing ring had me wondering.
Hi I have a question, did you unloosen the line from the fuel pump? I know you said to unloose it, but I didn't see you unloose it.
Great video thanks!
no he don't need to do because truck started on his first text
I have a truck it have bubbles on filter level fuel it won't go up on clear filter canaster
What can I do
Thank a lot
U saved me a Tow
My 2009 freightliner cascadia 60 series it don't turn over I think it's has air in it . I didn't feel that fuel separator all the way up and I tried to crank it ,it's just turning . Can you please help me? Thanks
Nice I like your girlfriend reference. Lmao
What would cause the fuel water separator to fill to the top with diesel fuel not water after a few days of installation? And power loss
We have ran on empty tanks, not the truck will only start when I add the fuel from the top of the glass oil filter, when I close the cap the fuel level drops when truck idle, the it shuts off, I add the fuel again and it runs for little,, not sure why the fuel won’t stay in the ball
Thank you.
That works for me.
Great stuff!
I was hoping u were gonna show us how to get fuel to the pump and use a vacuum pump on the return line . Thanks anyway
were you ever able to figure out how to do that ? i may need to do that on my truck man
Good job, 😃😃😃 Thanks
Sucking air into the system, those bubbles say it all.
Can't you use starting fluid after filling filter
Great vedeo and great explanation 👍 but that engine is a crap 😳 100% better a CAT 👌
Any ideas?
Good video. Either man.
I have a unit that the fuel lines are on top of the f/w separator and they filled the bottom bowl and left the top empty and the unit sucked in a good amount of air, do I need to bleed it the same way?
I just use engine start spray on diesels after fuel filter change starts em straight up every time.
What about the fuel water separator? Thought that was the separator? Is it the same thing? Sorry I know this should be a no brainer, I’m in diesel college but as of right now we are online. Just trying to familiarize myself with Diesel engines so I don’t struggle as much when I get a job.
It’s the water separator
What a major pain in the azz why they dont sell an inline isolation kit is a mystery
Hey question, my truck is taking forever to start (d13) and it stays misfiring. I got some bubbles in the tank. But her i open the the priming pump it came lose. Do you think its soaking air ? Or my problem is injectors and cups?
Thanks 🙏🏼
Funny cause I'm having this problem right now. Everytime it cranks up fuel goes down on the fuel filter and won't stay steady.
The other mechanic sucked if he can’t prime a series 60 ……….. the one that really sucks is a Mercedes 4000. It primes totally different than any other engine. But if you know the trick it’s pretty easy
Thanksss!!!❤❤❤
Wheres your hand pump hoss?
Is there a way to prime it?
Put the cap back on!
what you will do its start but the full levl is full
i let it drain to levle 3 when the engine is runing and stops it wont start back up i have to do it again i tink very furestratd
Wow thanks
What do you do when the filter is full but as soonest you start the truck the pump is taking the diesel from the filter and the filter is not filling up back
I have the same problem
Hero status 🎉🎉🎉❤😊😊
The ring at bottom looked loose it was sucking air
What number was that fuel filter
Did you try started fluid ? I had pretty good luck getting air cleared from the system that way.
I drove a detroit s50 500+ miles and then in the morning it wouldn't start. Previous owner mentioned he had to do this every cold start, what would cause that?
Check valve located rear of cylinder head . Two different valves . Give parts man engine serial number .
That's funny, you went from your "girl friend" impression to your "safe sex" impression!

they often times almost ALWAYS need to be pressurized
There is a special tool you have to use to prime the system on Detroit’s, otherwise you will have issues. They also recommend changing the oil and filter first then start it. Then change fuel filters
Detroit dd series engines are a pain if you haven’t got a fuel priming tool. Takes a whole lot of pumping of the priming pump.
installed one today but we didnt add fuel to it truck started running funny any ideas
Common sense goes a long way.
Funny thing about common sense is that it is not as common as one might think.
i tried this steps still my truck wont start
Just give it a sniff of eather
Well. You are using their truck. You should advertise it..
Needs an environmental clean up now!
For what?
Get out of here Rob. You tree hugger!
