I had a ton of fun making this video because I got the opportunity to go more into child psychology then I normally do for the little chow chow Judo. Judo is a really interesting character in the way she is presented so this was quite a hard script to make honestly haha but nevertheless I hope you buddies enjoy

Another thing many people seem to overlook, is that it's been said very early on that the breeds of each "child" were chosen deliberately - and Chows are a very, very protective breed. They're known to not be beginner-friendly due to bite incidents with poor training etc.. and they will obsess over their owner, which can turn dangerous quickly.
So Judo being defensive over her seemingly only close friend in the neighbourhood, especially when she seems to part-time live with another parent or grandparent (in Sticky Gecko I believe it is mentioned how Bluey hasn't seen her in a long time - which.. if she lives next door is pretty unlikely in the summer. Kids go out and play.)

I can certainly testify to Chow Chows and their owners. My sister left her dog with us while she worked in long haul trucking. We did take care of him, and developed a strong attachment, but there was no question of who got his attention when mommy came around to visit.

    • @geministrial950

People seem to forget that the ability to let go of your attachments is most definitely a LEARNED skill. Any animal (and yes, that includes humans) is naturally protective of their resources or, in the case of social creatures like dogs and humans, their "herdmates". Kids aren't born knowing emotional regulation or boundaries from day one, and teaching them is a long process! Heck, some adults can't even do that by themselves!

(Sorry! Speech to text) cannot believe how many arguments ahead over the Internet a year ago because people would not stop telling me that they hated her and they hated kids like this when I was like this as a kid I was sweet but I cut people off and I always wanted to have everything and I always wanted to be the best at anything and everything I did I always have certain things and I wasn't very nice to my sister when she was born because I wanted all the attention after a couple of months to a year I finally started to learn how to compromise and how to share! I genuinely think TikTok and other apps have made people this comfortable, this is an educational show it's not a series like teen Titans where you can bash the characters for being immature these ARE TINY KIDS the entire show is supposed to teach you. So why are people acting like you can criticize harshly to 3-8 year olds but not with any of the adults? Sorry this isn't how works.

In Sticky Gecko, Chili mentions Wendy made the Heeler family five lasagnas when Bluey was born. Considered Judo was in the same baby group as Bluey, that implies to me that Wendy went out of her way to help out Chili while she was either pregnant with Judo or already had her. In Ragdoll and Sheepdog, Wendy keeps going out of her way to help Chili and the girls (while also messing with Bandit). She comes across as a bit more snooty than the Heelers, but she’s still a caring and supportive neighbor.
As for Judo, it’s clear she learns each time she’s on screen. Again in Sheepdog she’s playing with Bluey and Bingo, likely having learned her lesson from Butterflies (and the tail end of Seesaw) and Dirt goes to show how much of Judo’s personality is influenced by her mother. The hate Judo got from the Bluey fandom always put me off as it seemed like a bunch of adults harping about a child character. Now, I do understand where that dislike comes from, but also still think it’s unfair. I’m glad to see people have come around to Judo though

Omg yes! I remembered how much Chili said she thought of Wendy in Sticky Gecko because of the lasagnas, but I had never put together that she must’ve done all that meal prep either very pregnant or with a newborn herself Ragdoll and Sheepdog made me love her character. Like she’s totally a boss B and I am here for it! But then Dirt came along and omg 😭 That episode shows so much growth for her as a character as well. I imagine she hasn’t had it easy, being possibly a single mom, and trying to live up to certain expectations (many put on by herself). So to see that hard, flawless exterior that she’s put up finally crack, or even be shed completely, is pretty remarkable! I’d love to see more in depth storytelling about her and Judo’s lives in the future.

I see Judo as that middle class, little black girl who's mom dresses her really nice, spends hours on her hair, and expects certain behaviors from her. The episode about her long, lovely coat really brought that home for me. Don't get in the pool, Judo. it might ruin your hair. don't play too hard, judo. you might sweat out your hair style. don't get dirty, judo. you'll dirty up your nice, new clothes. and on and on.

I like Judo because she acts like many of my early friends in childhood. I grew up in an area that had a lot of environmental trauma, that led to many kids having to adapt to different circumstances and kindergarten was often their first time reguarly spending time with kids their own age. And many of them often acted like Judo at first, but grew to be more considerate and sociable over time.
Ultimately no matter the reason for Judo's behavior, I think its great for Bluey to show kids that take a little longer to learn how to interact with their peers in a positive way.

    Top 10 strongest Bluey Characters
    10) Bob Bilby. He knows karate and is extremely adaptable
    9) Wendy. THIS is what 10 years of Pilates will do for you!
    8) Muffin. If she skips a sleep, she becomes THE FLAMINGO QUEEEEEN!!!!
    7) Bella. She gave birth NINE TIMES
    6) Winton. He can fly, he's jacked, and he can turn into a car
    5) Rusty's Dad. He's a war hero, he can do 500 push-ups, and some think he can fly a helicopter
    4) Shawn. He drives even the bravest of neighbors to fear
    3) Tina. Not only is she super bug and strong, but being feom the same plane of existence as John Cena, she is completely invisible
    2) Chattermax. He has no off button, and thus NEVER gets tired
    1) Unicorse. He has the power of a God, but does nothing with it. He's a celestial sapien in disguise. If you can get his 3 personalities to agree, he could destroy and remake the entire universe with just a thought

As a teacher, I always have to ask “who showed you this? Who made you believe that it was normal or okay?!” More than “why would you?” Because kids don’t even understand why they do what they do. Guilting and shaming them with unjust punishment will only make it worse. Kids deserve MUCH better emotional intelligence than just anger and resentment.

  • @lornadune2506
    @lornadune2506 2 дня назад +24

I could never hate Judo because I've been her. While she was mean to Bingo in "Butterflies" and made Bluey run off with her (I've had that happen to me too!) in the middle of their game, I do kind of get it.
Judo doesn't go to Bluey's school and she's only ever seen playing with Bluey and whoever Bluey is with. I do think she doesn't live with Wendy all the time because she wasn't invited for ice cream in "Ragdoll" and I don't think Wendy would have not invited her if she was home. All that is to say, I think Bluey is Judo's only friend, so she's very protective of her and doesn't want to share. It doesn't excuse being mean, but it does at least provide a perspective into why she was mean.
I also hope whenever you do your "Dirt" deep dive, that you bring up the topic of gender roles and femininity that is placed upon little girls. My interpretation of the episode as an adult woman is that it is about how the trappings of femininity stifles little girls and makes it harder for them to be children.
Girls and women are encouraged to prioritize their appearance above all else, but it's at the cost of everything else. A little girl who can't get dirty can't really play or be a child in the same way that a more tomboy girl like Bluey can. I couldn't play kickball as a little girl because my dad made me wear dresses and tights and would be upset if they got dirty or ripped. My mom finally said enough was enough and started dressing me in normal clothes I could play in.
When Wendy cuts her hair, she is cutting away the gendered expectation for women to prioritize being pretty and showing Judo that her appearance shouldn't be her primary concern. She is telling her that she was wrong and that Judo's happiness is the most important thing to her, not what she looks like. Judo is a kid and deserves to be able to act like one. She is not a doll to be placed on a shelf.

I pretty much agree with all your points on Judo in this one, Pugly. Though frankly I feel like you can't discuss Judo without Wendy and I have a feeling you have a big Wendy deep dive cooking. While I do think Judo is a child of divorce, because frankly I think telling us the Judo's dad has passed away might be just a bit too much for a kids show, I am more curious about when the divorce happened and what was the cause of it. Chili mentions to Bluey in "Sticky Geko" that Wendy has been one of her closest friends for years and brought many lasagnas over while Bluey was a new born. And she clearly has a deep respect and care for the Heeler family, despite their shenanigans. We see this wonderfully in "Ragdoll" and "Sheepdog" where she plays along with the game of the episode and even shows off her own skills with helping the girls get Bandit into Bobo and playing along with the Sheepdog game to give Chili her 20mins. I especially love how she is quick to comfort Bluey when Bluey says she thinks Chili wishes she didnt have children. She clearly cares deeply for the family, even if seeing Bandit cleaning the window with his butt in "work" might have made look for a new house for a second. There is one scene though I think you may have overlooked that frankly seals the deal that Wendy and Judo care for the family more than we gave them credit for. Right near the end of "The Sign' when the family is saying goodbye to the neighbours, we see Judo deeply embrace both Bluey and Bingo, clearly saddened at both leaving and not just Bluey. We also see Wendy talking pretty intensely to Chili before hugging. While we dont hear what is said, I always thought it was "You call me if you need anything" or something like that. I find the dynamic interesting because it is clear that Wendy and Chili are very close and yet we don't see them interact that much. But we know they are longtime friends from the "Babyrace", "Sticky Geko", "Sheepdog" and "The Sign". Frankly I see some of my own traits in Wendy to an extent. She clearly loves the Heeler family very much yet is happy in her own company yet will immeditely drop what she is doing to help out as we saw in "Ragdoll" and "Sheepdog". I really would like a backstory more on Wendy and her husband. Maybe they weren't even a couple and Judo was surprise herself. Who knows? One thing I wonder is if Pat and Judo are just complete original ideas from Joe Brumm or if his neighours are actually like the ones in the show. Regardless, another outstanding video Mr. Pugly. Frankly I would take a course you teach about child psychology using Bluey as a teaching aid. I feel like the knowledge you display in your videos is pretty good and more people should see it. Great work on this. Till next time buddy.

Very nice / in-depth thoughts! That is one of the things I really like about the show - the parents of all the kids have friends and close relationships and otherwise deep lives despite not (usually) being the main focus of the show.
One thing I will say is, whether or not it applies to Judo, I don't think they'd shy away from explicitly stating that a kid had a parent who'd passed. Having parents who died in the past isn't dodged as much as death in other cases is on kids shows (and how taboo it is probably varies between countries as well). With Bluey specifically, they've even talked explicitly about death before (like with the budgie in Copycat). They seem very committed to showing different families and upbringings and such, and they're very good for the whole "allowing kids to gain experience with serious and heavy topics in a safe and controlled way" thing. If they were to hint at but not make clear that a character's parent had passed, I think the reason would more likely be either that they were planting seeds for future episodes, or they were leaving it open to interpretation (which they seem to like doing as well), rather than because they don't want to talk about death on a kid's show.
      (Edit: grammar)

Funnily enough I never minded Judo's character, or her mom's, probably because I was raised around kids and parents who acted exactly like they did. Bluey's portrayal is honestly spot on, to the point I started seeing a lot of similarities between Judo and my old neighbor/childhood friend. Only difference being that she was the eldest sister excluding her younger sister to (paradoxically) hang out with MY younger sister. I know, very confusing.
I hope to see Bluey's audience be more empathetic and understanding when engaging with some of the show's more... divisive characters. At the end of the day, kids like Juno are still learning, and just need a nudge in the right direction.

I like to think Wendy cutting her hair in Dirt is a very kid-friendly way to represent ending the cycle of generational trauma.
I’ve definitely heard of families that put a LOT of emphasis on the daughters having long and natural hair. It’s typically rooted in some kind of religious or traditional belief system about womanhood and being ladylike (which isn’t inherently wrong), and it can leave a lasting impact on how girls grow up thinking about their identity as a woman. With Wendy’s “snootier” behavior, emphasis on her hair (and her daughter’s), and fancy accessories she’s occasionally seen with, I don’t think it’s far fetched to say Wendy was likely raised in a household with strict views on womanhood. And, not wanting her daughter to feel limited within her own identity as a girl, Wendy made a positive example of herself that she could still be a beautiful and strong woman without being ‘traditional’.
Dirt is one of my favorite episodes because of Wendy. Seeing her make the cognitive decision to change her parenting style for the benefit of her daughter is so heartwarming and makes her one of my favorite characters

I love that you made this video honestly, and while I myself wasn't an only child, I had a similar upbringing as both my younger sister and father were absent growing up. My mum is very similar to Wendy, and I became very mature at a young age I figure because I was sheltered due to my mother's nature, and took on a lot of her traits to please her. Something I had to learn to grow out of, as it turns out our ideologies actually oppose each other, and she wasn't a good role model for me at all as she pushed a lot of her own expectations onto me - Especially when it came to societal expectations like, for example, Judo being made to pride herself on her appearance further excluding her from other kids her age because she's simply expected to. I feel like I appreciate Juno a lot more after watching this! :)

I never disliked Judo - although was pained by some of her mistakes. To me, all of her mistakes seemed completely reasonable for a six-year-old of a certain temperament to make.
Does she remind some fans too strongly of real people who had hurt them in their own childhood, maybe? That's the only reasonable explanation I can think of for why so much is held against her.

I don't think I was bossy, but as an only child, I RESPECT that Bluey's creators make it so that when her closest parent says "well it's up to Judo", _she still chooses her mom_ .
What many sibling-ful kids don't get is that, _you don't want to be perceived different by your parent_ BECAUSE THEN YOU'D BE TRULY ALONE.
I absolutely love how they resolve the conflict by the end, without Judo's mom's change of ideology, it won't be as... happy ending.

I feel like Judo’s complaints early on are likely a reflection of her environment: twice she makes the statement that another character is “too small” for something
Someone in her life-her father?-has likely used that as an excuse or reason frequently in her life. Moments like
“Why can’t I come to work with you?”
    “You’re too small.”
“Why can’t I help with xyz?”
    “You’re too small.”
“Why can’t I go by myself?”
    “You’re too small.”
It probably isn’t meant to be discouraging, but I can see someone like Judo who tends to act very mature for her age internalizing it and projecting it onto others, thus why it’s a reoccurring phrase from her

Some kids are just awkward with other kids, and need extra help to know how to play in a way that's fun for everyone, instead of being bossy or exclusive. I'm glad I had my school friends at that age who were patient with me. It looks like Judo has that, too.

  • @ceres090

I never thought Wendy was mean. I bit "stuck up" maybe, but her reactions to the Heelers is far more likely than their neighbor Patrick. Most people would be annoyed by such a loud family whose antics often spill over to affect others.
Wendy on the other hand may huff a bit at times, but she's never shaming her neighbors or treating them harshly. She doesn't bad mouth Chilli for dancing in front of her car in "Dance Mode," and she even plays along with Bandit in "Sheep."
Judo is emulating a lot of adult behavior and is a bit selfish at first, but she's a kid. Like many only children she just doesn't understand kids.
The show doesn't have any villains and I think people are trying to find a pair in Wendy and Judo. That, or they remind them of their own childhood bullies and they are projecting a bit.

I think many people who dislike Judo and think Dirt was just a way to make us like her forget that she does show up in quite a few episodes in the background. Most specifically, in Sheepdog Wendy tells the girls to go play with Judo so that they will leave Chili alone, and the girls are *excited* to do so. If she was really such a bratty, unlikeable child, would they both have wanted to play with her? It's similar to the arguments people have about Muffin, imho. This was an excellent breakdown!!

I feel like that could have gone either way (like, I don't know if I'd necessarily say it would be "unrealistic" for Judo to just go "Hooray!" and jump in the mud), but since I feel like it'd be much easier to just have her do it, I think it's another example of the writers going above and beyond to showcase as many different personalities and situations as they can since the experiences of children and their parents aren't a monolith.

A detail I think people overlooked: the impatience Judo shows for Bingo at first is the same impatience Bluey and Bingo show to Muffin at times, and its for the exact same reason of they're struggling to accommodate a younger child against their own wants.
Its not that Judo doesn't show impatience the other puppies don't, its that we're seeing children correct each other's behaviour instead of a parents immediate intervention this time, and we view Bingo as 'ours' and the mama bear comes out.

    So;
I have NEVER watched Bluey, and this showed up on my fyp, and when I finished watching it, I just went crazy. This is EXACTLY what my childhood was like. I was a Bossy, anger issues sort of kid, with divorced parents, but also a stepdad. The only difference was that my mother never changed. When I was a kid, she always said I shouldn’t get dirty and play in the mud, since it would be dumb. She would always rhetorically ask, “Oh, so you want to play in the mud?” And I would be forced to say no, due to my intense fear of her being disappointed in me. This cycle hasn’t ended. I’m not as bossy and anger issues now, but it was practically a miracle on how I finally stopped being like that. I’m gonna watch Bluey now.
Edit: She would also use our race as an excuse sometimes, if my memory is correct. (We live in a mostly-white area, and we’re Asian. She always tried to say that Asians were smarter, and didn’t like getting dirty, so that was one of her reasons. Which I can see strongly ties into this character.)

I recently compared Frisky with Mackenzie and now, here is my comparison between Radley and Judo. In the episode "Butterflies", Judo was very bossy and arrogant and sometimes ignored people completely. This links Judo's behavior with Radley's behavior in the episode "The Sign" where he makes all his plans to move out to the west with Frisky without her knowing. As a result, Frisky became very cross and cancelled her wedding at the last minute. When Radley later said, "Because clearly, I am not good at this stuff, Chilli", this is where I see a resemblance between Radley and Judo. On the good side, both of them have stylish hairstyles and they like to be involved in something cool. But on the flip side, sometimes, their wrong actions (like ignoring and abandoning others or not telling others first before doing it) can affect and hurt other people's feelings because of their arrogance and pride. But, fortunately with the guidance of their friends through understanding and talking things through, Judo redeems herself for the better while Radley reconciles with Frisky and have a happy wedding with her. Overall, the episode "Dirt" is my favorite "Judo" episode where Judo goes through a reformation change in order to play with Bluey and Bingo. Furthermore, I realized that all of us can still do the right thing if we are given the chance to correct our mistake (like Radley and Judo did).

I never really hated Judo. But “Dirt” made a special place in my heart because I was always the little black girl whose hair was different from her friends’ so it limited how I could play. In fact, my parents had to talk with my teachers because I would get sand in my hair when playing in the sandbox; so not entirely unlike Judo with the dirt mound.
After that, I started relating Wendy and Judo as black and perhaps Wendy, consequently, feeling the need to set higher standards or to keep up appearances. Obviously, Judo would take on these traits and slowly need to unlearn them. She’s not a bad kid, she’s just a kid.

Judo reminds me a lot of myself as a kid, espesically with all your explanations about her behavior. I'm an only child (not from divorce, just a single mom and her family who mainly raised me.) Not only was I an only child, but due to several disabilites (including physical disabilities that kept me in the hospital for a bit as a younger kid, and also being autistic), I ended up being pretty isolated for a long time with only my mom being the only person who hung out with me, and I ended up a lot like her (being a sort of rebellious but lawyer-like old soul like she was.) I also ended up being bossy and rude to other people, sometimes without realizing it (that was probably my autism.) I remember distinctly doing what Judo did in "Butterflies" to my neighborhood friend and her younger sister when I was a kid, not fully outright bullying her, however I had a much shorter temper with her than my friend and would try to keep her out of our games and activites like Judo did. I wish I could apologize to them now for it, but they moved years ago and I haven't seen them since.

  • @lizziescott

So much of the Bluey fandom refuses to look deeper when it comes to why these characters are the way they are, and thats honestly baffling to me since then entire is show is ABOUT childhood development and how it shapes children.
People call Muffin a spoiled brat- When in reality shes a 3 year old who's parents havnt figured out a consistant parenting style and who have a habit of giving her special treatment. We activly see Muffin accept when she's given structure or told that she needs to behave. The issue isn't her having an inability to do so, its that Trixie and Stripe have yet to fully work that into how they parent her.
Judo was SO OBVIOUSLY mimiking her mother and treating herself as an adult- and yet the fandom just shrugged it off as "Oh she's a mean girl and a bully"
    When no.
She's an only child who idolizes her mother and is held to a higher standard then most kids- So she's learned to place herself above most kids in terms of maturity and mimiks how adults would respond to them. Whenever she's called out for this she owns up and apologizes. And Dirt is activly showing us that despite feeling like she HAS to be adult- shes just a kid who WANTS to be like other kids.
Heck, I've seen some people get onto Bluey, and call her selfish and controling because of how she behaves sometimes.
    Bluey.
The main character of the show, who is 6, and who learns a new lesson in almost every episode.
She's not selfish and controling. She's a 6 year old who gets over excited and acts without thinking because shes 6!! Whenever she's pulled back and clued into what shes doing she immediately changes course to fix the situation.
Because she's not a bad kid.
    She's just a kid.
The entire show is based around how children learn and grow, and the fact that they genuinely do not know all the things that adults do. Socially and otherwise.
    And yet somehow.
Half the fandom expects these children to act like and have the motivations of full grown adults.

Judo is one of my favorite characters in the show, simpyl due to how well-written she is. Love this little haughty furball

I still feel it was unnecessary for her to be in Seesaw as she was only seen quite briefly having a go at Pom Pom

I know I got judged a few times as a grade-schooler for my behavior that was negative, but than again, I literally once sold a monster toy to allow a kid to torture his younger sister and her friends with (I was about 10-11 at the time). I didn't see anything wrong with doing that since I was an only child, and it still the boy's choice to buy it. My friend's younger sister thought I was a jerk for doing that.
This got a friend of mine into a fight with both her older sister and that younger sister at once since I literally side-stepped the fight that started. I didn't get in trouble and got to keep the money.
You also can probably blame my mom for why I didn't see anything wrong with that since she literally taught me how to bargain at garage sales about 5-6 years old and often used me to get better deals from a very young age. If you can get something that's $5 for a nickel or dime, why not sell a toy for $20+ if it lets someone else do their goals?

ive always liked judo for similar reasons as muffin: children are a product of their environment and both stripe and trixie and wendy contrast bandit and chilli in a satisfying way, and it's realistic to show the kinds of sometimes troublesome personalities kids will run into growing up. i knew a muffin, i knew a judo, i WAS a judo a lot being an isolated only child with a lot of pressure put on my outward appearance vs my rambunctious personality. i love the was bluey is both unafraid to tackle the sticky situation of 'unlikable' children in a children's show and how they do so kindly and empathetically, showing that everyone can change and do better and there isn't just a 'bad guy'. i can see many young judos seeing her not portrayed as say, an angelica, and being able to change and gain true friends in doing so.
as i was watching the lead up to dirt, i had a serious 'hindsight' moment showing wendy being vulnerable with a much kinder judo, i kind of think wendy was the face of the chows' character development. given judo's first impression shows her parroting her mother, i think focusing on wendy alone as she changed to a looser, more fun character was a way to softly re-introduce judo and her better outlook. i don't feel like it was out of nowhere, but maybe because i always liked judo and was excited to see her learn and grow, her coming back was always in the back of my mind throughout season 2 and 3.

In my opinion I was a selfish spoiled child. But I think we bully ourselves enough and all have past actions as a child were embarrassed or ashamed by.

oooh I was a Judo in many ways growing up. Mostly the part in following my mother more negative views on some topics. It's only after growing up and going to therapy and learning more then my mother did I start to see how wrong her views were.

I joke about hating Muffin and Judo, but I think it's weird to actually hate a child. :(

Yep, the statistics about the emotional health of only children is the main reason I plan on having another kid in a couple years. I don't want my son to grow up without the experience of having a sibling, it can be so helpful for development in so many ways.

True dat. My fiance is an only child and while I love him, he is absolutely *terrible* in certain situations because he was just never socialized that well or shared anything with siblings like i did as the youngest of 5. We want our very own sibling duo

the episode "Dirt" disturbs me very much. why is Bandit allowing his kids to play in that stuff? it can't be sanitary. "oh, but it's naturel" no, it isnt, it was dumped by a truck. why is it even there? how much of it is s**t?

They're Australians, man. Im sure the girls will encounter things way more dangerous than a pile of dirt in their lives and they'll survive them.
