The whole thing about teenage girls!!! The amount of times I’ve felt shamed for being super passionate about things growing up, or just because I liked them they were seen as “immature” or “poor quality” just because it made a 14 year old excited.... so stupid! I was one of the only people I knew who read books regularly, or got excited about discussing movies and pop culture! Some of that stuff is critically acclaimed, but no, if it has a predominant audience of young females, it must not be good enough. I totally agree so many people unfairly judge YA books and look down upon those who read them. It’s so unfortunate because there is such a wide range of subjects they can reach.
The same goes for adult though, genres don't stop catering to audience wishes because the audience got older. I think it sort of goes both ways, people just need to read what they want to without thinking whether it's got a teen protagonist or an adult

I just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and now I'm reading American Royals. The differences between them are not as pronounced as one might seem- surprisingly! I love YA, and I appreciate this deep dive into the differences!
Thank you for putting this message out there. I can’t stand how judgmental people can be toward what others are reading. Many of those who have criticized what I’ve read aren’t even readers! They haven’t touched a book since they were in school! The last time I went to the dentist, I was reading Kingdom of Ash. The hygienist asked what the book was about. As I started to explain that it’s a fantasy novel, her response was, “oh you still read those?” As though only children read fantasy books!!!! Oh the nerve!
I feel like I'm in an in between place where I'm "too old" to read YA and should be reading adult books, but watching this video makes me realize that it doesn't really matter as long as I like what I'm reading
Dylan Wickersham I can agree. People gave me weird looks when I read Throne of glass out in public. Just because there’s a female on the cover doesn’t mean it’s only for girls! 😂
Dylan Wickersham I can agree. People gave me weird looks when I read Throne of glass out in public. Just because there’s a female on the cover doesn’t mean it’s only for girls! 😂
Random comment but this is the definition of perfect timing. I’m introducing my 8th grade design students to fun design projects and I was looking for the evolution of the YA covers so they can redesign an adult cover into YA! I’m gonna show them this :) thank you!
Lol adults don't just skip to being older. The fun romance drama ones are often with younger people too because that's when people are generally out and looking for love or sex rather than already settled with a couple of kids
This "debate" has always been utterly ridiculous. There are adult books I love, and adult books I hate. There are YA books I love, and YA books I hate. And then there's also middle grade. I've always read what sounds most interesting to me, regardless of age category, and that will never change.
13:04 is me in 7th grade when I was reading TMI. A boy asked if my book had vampires in it, and I said yes, and he said something like, "I knew it. Girls only read books about vampires."
isn't it crazy that in the year where there weren't faces on book covers (2013-2017) were the same years that Taylor Swift didn't show her whole face on her album cover (Red, 1989)! And then in 2017, they started allowing faces again and that's when Taylor put her face back on her album (reputation)!
Thank you for this. As a teenage girl with some of those interests, a lot of the times I'll read YA on my phone so I don't have to justify myself to other people. Which is dumb because I know I shouldn't be embarassed by what I'm reading, the fact that I'm reading anything is enough.
Lol I totally got put down by my Mom for reading Twilight in middle school because she thinks vampires are stupid:( She was always reading John Grisham, Dan Brown and THAT'S ALL SHE READ!!! UNTIL I reread Twilight for the eight-hundredth time and my Mom snatched my copy of Twilight from my hands while we were in Starbucks and started reading my Twilight books!!! The jokes on her though because now she reads the exact same books to the point where she reads any book I've been reading the moment I'm done with them!!! Oh I also got my Grandmother who only reads Classics to read Outlander and Game of Thrones and she LOVES them!!! Not sure how her mind went from "Only William Shakespeare writes true literature" to "Claire and Jamie are so cute and sweet"!! This led to the time this past Christmas where I walked into her house to hear her shouting "DAMN YOU JAMIE LANNISTER!" at the top of her lungs!!!!
Gosh this is genuinely such an interesting conversation to have. And I love that you did it without making age a factor in terms of who "should" be reading certain books.
PREACHHHHHH I’ve always felt so conscious when people ask me “oh so what do you usually read?” and I’ve actually had an English teacher in Secondary school come tell me that reading YA books are “a waste of time” and that I should be reading non-fiction stuff like the news. I really enjoy YA books and I’m glad there’s this huge community of YA lovers or just non-discriminating book lovers in generally! Love you xtine 🥰
@@adrianbooklecter7545 I do feel like within the last 8 months I have delved a lot deeper into adult books versus YA and I have discovered so many new beautiful books! I can definitely see how the context of my comment came off as a generalization on ALL adult covers, but that is not what I meant to imply. I'm sorry that I came off as extremely ignorant on this point.
I’d love if you could do like a intro to adult books recommendations video for all us who want to get into adult books more but don’t know where to start aside from Sarah j Maas lol
I'm turning 18 this month and I was literally just thinking the other day I was like, "I'm not ready to stop reading Ya novels. I'm not ready to only read Animal Farm and Grapes of Wrath😭. I haven't had my own Harry Potter-esque adventure yet, I don't want to be too old to read great adventures, because then what hope is there for experiencing one" So um, ya this made me feel a little better. 😂
Genres don't disappear with transition from YA to adult lol. You can still read a tense drama, fun romance or energetic fantasy in adult and you might actually like it better because there are less limitations (especially in romance drama)
the great thing about YA is that you never have to stop. i'm 23 and most of the books i read are ya, my mom is 48 and loves cassandra clare novels. you read whatever you want whenever you want.
Adult books are not just the classics (classics overlap the age genres and can include YA as well, like The Outsiders). There are plently of adult books that have adventures in them and thrilling romances. If you are into fantasy I'd look into Brandon Sanderson, especially his Mistborn trilogy, because from my own experience it was a great stepping stone from YA fantasy to Adult fantasy! But read what you want to read now! There's no pressure for you to shift into a purely adult reader at any point in time, that would be nuts lmao :)
S M yea! I haven’t read those books of his yet so I couldn’t give an opinion on them, but I found Mistborn super enjoyable and accessible to readers who are new to the adult genre. I actually reading the third and final book in Mistborn Era 1 right now lol
THANK YOU!!!! As a 23 year old, I'm constantly being asked why I'm still reading YA and why I don't read more adult books. They're books! A lot of the stories I'm interested in just happen to be in the YA section. YA isn't lesser than adult. It's just different.
I used to really dislike adult books because I felt like the characters and plots were so boring compared to YA. My grandpa recently started loaning me books of his. I am also and English major and have been assigned quite a few adult books now. I’m finding myself enjoying more adult books. I think maybe it was because I couldn’t find many in the bookstore because like you kind of said, it is much easier to navigate a section labeled YA than any other part of the bookstore. I just wasn’t finding the right books.
I made my mom read SJM when she was still doing just throne of glass. Now we anticipate her new books and read them together lol mother daughter bonding
As somebody who only read YA in their teens years and is now an adult, you just naturally gravitate towards adult books. I still like YA and I still read it but I definitely connect with adult characters and their situations more
As someone who's been an avid reader since they were a small child, I can agree with almost every said in this video. I'm so tired of people judging YA books, when honestly, most readers nowadays get started through YA, and slowly transition into adult books. I'm not even in my twenties just yet, but already people wonder why I don't read adult books. It's just a preference. YA has countless series and books that deal with more mature topics and themes, that could quite honestly be considered adult if you really think about it. As a kid/preteen, I also thought of adult books as having middle-aged characters as their lead, much like how childrens books tend to follow children/preteens, and how YA follows teenagers/young adults. I feel like many young adults (teens to early/mid twenties) enjoy YA as it's easier to put yourself in the world, and understand the characters and how they think. Especially when you yourself are around that age, or a bit older. Much like when you're a kid/preteen, and you can see yourself going to Hogwarts or Camp Half-blood for the first time, just like the main characters. Books don't have an expiration date for when you can and cannot enjoy them, and no one should be judged for the genres or types of books they read. Just my opinion. As always, lovely video, Christine
Girl. I spent my whole morning reading your book today. When I finished, a notification of this video popped up and I felt happy to see your face. I hugged your book tightly like saying good bye to Shane and Pies. I am "lost" without them this afternoon. THANK YOU for a fantastical trip. I fell in love with your characters and want more! Thank you for writing this story. I guess I'll watch this video now heheh.
Hi Christine! Loved the video! Super hilarious but SUPER relatable too! Maybe you should do a Noob's guide to adult fantasy or adult contemporary... ( I don't know if you did one of those in the past, though)... it could help! Have a great day ♥
Love what you said about YA being there for your first feelings and experiences in life. Which is exactly what YA has been for me. It really is a way of learning about the world and coping with life in ways that really go very deep and subtle. And if not, they're just escape from whatever issues you might be dealing with and that should be perfectly valid too even if its not life changing literature
"I needed to know everything was gonna. be. okay. Because I was not okay in that moment and I needed to SEE people being okay so that I can believe still that it's going to be okay." I HAVE NEVER RELATED MORE. You finally put my angsty 18-year-old thoughts into words!! PREACH🙌🏻❤️
People who judge what others read are such killjoys. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with it (yet), but many of my friends have. Let's all stop judging people for the things they love in 2020.
I’m in the WORST reading slump , I have endless free time , I want to read but I just cant , I want to tho , I have books I wanna read but I just cant😂😂help me
That was me a month ago. I was in a year long slump. The new book that just came out Crave finally got me out of it! Idk if you’re a vampire/twilight fan but if you are you should try it
This was a great video Christine. And one that I really needed. So many people, relatives included, often act like my reading young adult books now that I’m in my early 20s is like way too young for me or something and first of all why do they have to be do obsessed with the age label on the book, like you said it’s way more about the marketers then it is the reader. I want to be a librarian and I love your mention of how the adult book is like an incomprehensible landscape because the sections are just one big giant thing with multiple John earth we are the young adult fiction is so much more divided. You’re totally right we should have like a section for each decade or at least 20 to 40, middle-aged you I don’t know 70, and then 80 and older. Or something like that. And I know, no one has a right to judge with someone else reading and don’t they know not to book by its cover. The snaps you were talking about who do think there’s a great reading what they think, and yet, the judge and adult books by what they think they’re about simply based on the person on the cover or assuming all or about vampires which is not of course true
I remember you made me become such a book worm through your channel, unfortunately these past three years I somehow fell out of reading but I really miss it and I seriously missed watching your channel. I’m going to try and get into reading again bc it was such an enjoyable part of my life all thanks to you and your channel 💖 I’m 16 secs into the video and I think I’m going to cry from how much I missed you
as someone who has only read YA most of my life because i don't love the ~explicit content~ in adult books this is really helping my reading self-confidence 😂
I read all books, picture books (I have grandchildren), middle school books (grandchildren again, YA books, Christian Books, and adult books...Just do and be you. I should watch your videos in the morning, with that energy I would get everything done in less then a day!
I will be off topic here, but I just wanted to tell you that "Again but better" will be released in Poland in June. I have already read it (read or listened? idk) via audiobook and i really liked it. I can't wait to read your book in my native language and enjoy it the second time. :)
I'm 19 (nearing 20) and this was one of my biggest fears/worries, getting judged by others for still readying YA, but this video made me feel so much better. Thanks Christine! You speaking TRUTH🙌🏼👏🏽
Very well said 👏 I've had people judging me by the books I read. Because they, as readers, read classics and I mostly enjoy reading YA. And it doesn't happen only in books. In music, movies... You say it
This entire video was so relatable! You really expressed exactly what I hate about "reading snobs" and why I will always love YA even as I enter the second half of my twenties!
That’s exactly what I felt when I brought Blood Promise to school. Everyone judged the book just because of the girl’s face on the cover. “Oh another vampire book” “oh is it twilight?” “You like those kind of books??” Lol now I don’t give a damn. If I like a book I bring it with me anywhere
I needed to hear this video so bad! I am 23 but spent my entire childhood/teen years reading YA. Now that I am a “real adult” I feel like I should be reading “adult” books. Im torn between feeling too old to read the mind of a 17 year old and feeling too young to read boring books with 10 pages about dirt! Any good “adult” book recommendations with the protagonist in their 20s would be greatly appreciated!!🙏🏽
there are so many people that are too scared or busy to take up reading in the first place so why make it harder on them and ourselves... everyone should feel comfy to read whatever they want-- enjoying a certain genre or target demographic doesn't dumb you down. thanks Christine, I needed this rant! so basically, preach!! don't gatekeep reading!!
I'm 17 and I was re-reading Twilight on my porch this past week and literally someone came walking by and saw what I was reading and called me stupid because I was reading a YA.
i just ranted about exactly this with my best friend at 2 am for hours. THANK YOU🙌🙌❤️ people who judge us for reading YA (even tho we read adult too) or asking for book recs and when there’s a YA book there they go “oooh yeah but not YA tho i’m not into that” when they’ve never even tried it (the frustration!!) YA is just as good you may even enjoy it ahhhhh

I just finished The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and now I'm reading American Royals. The differences between them are not as pronounced as one might seem- surprisingly! I love YA, and I appreciate this deep dive into the differences!
YOU AND JESSE UPLOAD AT THE SAME TIME PLEASE I HAVE TO WATCH BOTH
In my teens and 20’s I read only adult books - lots of Jane Greene. Then Twilight came out and I’ve been reading young adult ever since. (I’m 41 😊)
Christine: changes outfits me: wAs ShE aLwAyS wEaRiNg BlUe?????
Omg is this why I struggle with adult books? I get so impatient with books sometimes lolll
“If you’re a wee chap” 😂😂😂
8:22 I feel that on such a deep level. You get some looks when you're a guy reading The Selection on a plane....
lol kudos to you for being open enough to read it though!
@@edensylvester13 Haha thanks! What can I say? I'm trash for royalty.
Dylan Wickersham I can agree. People gave me weird looks when I read Throne of glass out in public. Just because there’s a female on the cover doesn’t mean it’s only for girls! 😂

@@dylanwickersham5610 I'm trash for it too. I heard there was a prince so I read it. Team Maxon 💯
Random comment but this is the definition of perfect timing. I’m introducing my 8th grade design students to fun design projects and I was looking for the evolution of the YA covers so they can redesign an adult cover into YA! I’m gonna show them this :) thank you!
cristinasjourney i wish I were in your class :(
It sounds so cool!
cristinasjourney i wish I were in your class :(
Rachel Varghese 💕💕💕
oooh the colored lights. love the vibes
🖐 I have been personally victimized by people judging what I read lol.
OK but the photo in the background is so cute!
Seeing this in my inbox just makes me happy!
Only Christine can wear a hot pink blazer and mauve lipstick
Wait I’m 16 and I’ve genuinely believed all adult books are about 40+ characters wow I’m-
Me too
I’m 30 and me too 😂
same
Ur iconic sis-
Lol adults don't just skip to being older. The fun romance drama ones are often with younger people too because that's when people are generally out and looking for love or sex rather than already settled with a couple of kids
I just started Scythe because you loved it so much and so far I’m half way done and started it yesterday!
Yes! My absolute favorite book
Scythe is amazing!
Yeah it's my favorite book now
Scythe is great😍
So funny! I did the same thing two days ago and finished it all!
And then in 2017, they started allowing faces again and that's when Taylor put her face back on her album (reputation)!
lol I was subconsciously thinking about the Red and 1989 covers too
Liza Rowe that actually is crazy, considering both ya and Taylor swift are “teenage girl things” that get ridiculed by society
Haven’t watched her videos in years and recently searched a video of hers for a book I just finished. Love her personality!
Thank you for this. As a teenage girl with some of those interests, a lot of the times I'll read YA on my phone so I don't have to justify myself to other people. Which is dumb because I know I shouldn't be embarassed by what I'm reading, the fact that I'm reading anything is enough.
I’m 16 and people have told me I’m not allowed to read ya. Like I’m literally the target audience for those books! Reader shaming makes no sense.
@@averyjeanne Well, I started
to read YA since I was 12😂
Lol I totally got put down by my Mom for reading Twilight in middle school because she thinks vampires are stupid:( She was always reading John Grisham, Dan Brown and THAT'S ALL SHE READ!!!
'don't say things about my book that are mean!' - loved that 😂
Gosh this is genuinely such an interesting conversation to have.
Yesss
We are so blessed
Another Christine video
You covered this topic flawlessly!!!!! And WHY ARE ADULT BOOK COVERS SO UGLY!?!?!?!?!? I'm constantly complaining about that 😂😂😂
Look up Pachinko by Min Jin Lee or The Dutch House by Ann Pattchett. Some of the most beautiful covers I've seen.
saying that is so stupid and making a dumb generalization.... please think more next time
@@adrianbooklecter7545 I do feel like within the last 8 months I have delved a lot deeper into adult books versus YA and I have discovered so many new beautiful books! I can definitely see how the context of my comment came off as a generalization on ALL adult covers, but that is not what I meant to imply. I'm sorry that I came off as extremely ignorant on this point.
Last time I was this early, Christine was still in the process of making lamppost jokes in her college scripts
I’d love if you could do like a intro to adult books recommendations video for all us who want to get into adult books more but don’t know where to start aside from Sarah j Maas lol
“The biggest difference you’ll see in YA and Adult is the s-“ Me: SEX! Christine: SIZE!
I love you so muchhhhhh Christine hope your keeping well in quarantine!!!
I'm turning 18 this month and I was literally just thinking the other day I was like, "I'm not ready to stop reading Ya novels. I'm not ready to only read Animal Farm and Grapes of Wrath😭. I haven't had my own Harry Potter-esque adventure yet, I don't want to be too old to read great adventures, because then what hope is there for experiencing one"
So um, ya this made me feel a little better.
@@liviejb I've read Steelheart, that's the same guy right?
S M yea! I haven’t read those books of his yet so I couldn’t give an opinion on them, but I found Mistborn super enjoyable and accessible to readers who are new to the adult genre. I actually reading the third and final book in Mistborn Era 1 right now lol
Thank u for finally say this. I have been looked down on for reading ya books and it sucks. I’m glad someone finally addressed the this!! Thank u
Have a great day ♥
that's a great idea
"teenage girls steer the world"
FACTS
I am always amazed how you manage to edit two different videos into such a cohesive one
Love it!
Love what you said about YA being there for your first feelings and experiences in life. Which is exactly what YA has been for me. It really is a way of learning about the world and coping with life in ways that really go very deep and subtle. And if not, they're just escape from whatever issues you might be dealing with and that should be perfectly valid too even if its not life changing literature
this video is ridiculously brilliant. *raises hand as i have been judged reading vampire academy in public*
"I needed to know everything was gonna. be. okay. Because I was not okay in that moment and I needed to SEE people being okay so that I can believe still that it's going to be okay."
I HAVE NEVER RELATED MORE. You finally put my angsty 18-year-old thoughts into words!! PREACH🙌🏻❤️
i read ya books as "yah" books instead of young adult i-
Same😂
THANKYOU!!!! I mean, I'm only 23 but get so embarrassed when I go to the bookshop and walk straight to the YA section. They are soooo good though!!
People who judge what others read are such killjoys. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with it (yet), but many of my friends have. Let's all stop judging people for the things they love in 2020.
the dewy makeup look looks so good on you! you're glowing!
I love how the color of the lights match Christine's shirts.
i love this critique on cover design lmao. i'm a graphic design person and i loooove ya cover design it's so interesting
I’m in the WORST reading slump , I have endless free time , I want to read but I just cant , I want to tho , I have books I wanna read but I just cant😂😂help me
that's me with writing rn, and I also have tons of new books to read but I'm just in the mood to reread old ones lol
Christine rants = thick Jersey accent
Yay!! 🥰
I'm 19 (nearing 20) and this was one of my biggest fears/worries, getting judged by others for still readying YA, but this video made me feel so much better. Thanks Christine! You speaking TRUTH🙌🏼👏🏽
I especially loved the look into YA covers over the ages 😂
I love how colorful Christines wardrobe is!!
Very well said 👏 I've had people judging me by the books I read. Because they, as readers, read classics and I mostly enjoy reading YA. And it doesn't happen only in books. In music, movies... You say it
i am impatient and i am 26, 27 this august sooo... yee i like YA much more.
31, and still love YA!
This entire video was so relatable! You really expressed exactly what I hate about "reading snobs" and why I will always love YA even as I enter the second half of my twenties!
I love that the fact that this was two clips edited together means that Christine had this rant at least twice
Just bought The Book of Longings! So excited that I finally jumped on a book subscription box.
"Whatever is floating your boat is grand. Read it." I'm about to be an English teacher and I want to put that on my classroom wall 😄
Christine's videos always make me feel better.
I mean it's also the story i'm interested in, so when i like the story/plot, i don't even think about the fact that the main characters are 17/18
Or 25, 30, 40?
Do you and jessethereader plan your video uploads? Because I got the notification for this video and his at the same time!
😂 Same
Same
i just ranted about exactly this with my best friend at 2 am for hours.
“The Seven Husbands of Eleanor Hugo” 😂 I’m sorry, but made my day.
Eleanor Hugo? I hardly know her!
LOL I didny even realize that came out of my mouth XD
Very well said Christine
