- On the way back South from TST training, I stop by a familiar shop on the PA border.
The shop owner had one Chevy Silverado for me to diagnose, but by the time I got there he had THREE BROKEN CHEVY trucks on the lot!!
Let's get busy!
Part 1:
Chevy #1: 2011 Silverado 5.3 V8: Intermittent REDUCED POWER Limp Mode.
P2135-TPS 1 vs 2 Correlation.
Chevy #2: 2011 Silverado 5.3 V8: Intermittent STALL and NO-START. Plus an ABS light.
P025A Fuel Pump Control Module Enable Circuit
C0050 Right Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
For Part 2:
CRAZY Chevy #3: 2018 Silverado 5.3 V8: BRAKE and REVERSE Lights stuck ON?? WEIRD!!

It was a beautiful friendship while it lasted.
@@riblets1968 our friendship is doing just fine LOL!
My 4 Kids got full rides for College. NO Chevs needed.
Eric says he loves Chevys, they're putting his kids through school :)
Subaru, Mazda and Nissan too.
Chevy truck also takes his son to school. 😂
They bought one of his boys a GMT-800.
Z-71 truck, I think...
He has no kids...
@@scientist100 Who ? (Ivan or Eric ?) Eric has 3 kids, I think. (Ivan, I have not seen any)

Eric O vs Ivan, the battle of joining two pieces of wire together.
haha Im enjoying it
Getting caught up on PHAD. Last few days were very hard. Our son passed away yesterday April 20th at age 34. His drug addiction resulted in cardiac arrest but was revived, but being 20 min without oxygen resulted in severe brain swelling/damage. Robert is now free from his demons 😈. RIP my son
Man, that's heavy. RIP.
I have put hundreds of those butt connectors and no one has told me that it has come apart after 15 years.
Same here I've gone thru countless heat shrink ones since at least 2008 and not had one fail me yet.
Those are what I use. I purchase the higher end Anchor marine grade ones in packs of 100 and they are flawless. Shrinks very nicely.
Those are perfectly fine if crimped & sealed properly. The only issue here is how they didn't stagger the wire cuts, leading to that big nutsack of crimps in the harness.
Remember when the PCM energized a relay and the fuel pump worked? Who the hell decided trucks needed another module just to operate the fuel pump?
Lol, boy you must have let out a yell when you hit that thumb! Wow!
I was just thinking the same thing. 😬😫😥😂
That many splices with butt connectors should be staggered to make a smaller and neater bundle.
Working without a lift and finding crusties. Gotta love Ivan!!!!!!
😂
99,999% oxidation or 3rd hand issues but almost never OEM control unit defects. Well done Ivan! I had same oxidation issues on my power door lock and also on right turn signal.. I did not look anything else only where the crusts are :) 14+ years vehicle...
As Eric O always says Chevy Thunder.
I love the sound of a Chevy thundering.
@@GregoryGlessnerViolin Yes i no because i have two 5.3 liter Silverado.
I call my 2005 Silverado with 240k miles "Chevy Thunder"! It keeps rumbling along.
@@lukerudolph1022 I call my 99 Astro the Thunderbus, or "Thundie" for short 😁
As long as the fuel pump runs and it's not in REDUCED POWER MODE 😂
Thanks for the Friday night video Ivan…wife is not happy! 😂🇺🇸
😂
How do you know the crimp was done correctly.
Answer.. If SMA done the crimps!
It's not just another day unless you are working on ANOTHER broken Chevrolet. ... Keeping mechanics fed and sheltered, since ... Forever!
P2135 by itself is the dual female terminals inside the throttle body have lost terminal tension. You can get a throttle body sensor kit and fix it or you might be able to tighten the pin grips up. Need to disassemble throttle body to do it. Pop the clips off and keep sensor cover assembly facing up when you do though so parts dont fall out. GM has an extended policy on these for this repair.
Huh good info to keep in the back of my mind for the future
@@yeahitskimmelI know it’s only a matter of time😂
Green crusties, money shot, solder connectors.
We know Ivan been watching Eric O 😅
You and SMA need to do a butt connector solder winner take all😂
Game on haha 😎
I got a fuel pump module for my uncle 09 GMC from O'Riley. It was a standard motor product box but it 💯 was OEM gm part
I have been getting a bunch of OEM parts in Standard Motor Products boxes. Wonder if manufactures are farming out their old parts to SMP to build and SMP just isn't blocking out the identification on those parts.
Ivan is winning the battle against the green crusties! Good find!
On to part two.
Ivan...that thumb 😂. Hope it heals quickly for ya!
it doesn't heal, the nail just waits to fall off.
Is ha a carpenter also?
I thought it was Ivan's new trademark.
I thought he had some dark fingernail polish on it when I first saw it! 😂
Those are the worst. Bleed under the nail and have to drain it with a poker. Then you are stuck with a black nail for 6 months.
Long time ago a friend taught me when he was poking a hole in a wire with a test light afterwards he pulled out a glue stick heated it with lighter and melted it on the hole. Of cource he cleaned wire w/ rubbing alcohol first. Been using this method ever since. Thanks Ivan great diagnosis 🌠
Great find, bad connections are sometime hard to find.
Nice work Ivan!!
Thanks for the video Ivan.
Appreciate your videos Ivan. You do a great job in diagnosing vehicles.
Finding a lot of those harnesses catching hell on that shock absorber bolt/mount area.. 😬😬
That truck looks just like the trucks in my area. Ive also found that GM labels the relay center generically and i believe the v6 engine uses fuse 20 and the relay. The v8 uses the FPCM and a different fuse.
Very informative video. Thanks again..
So many green crusties! Thanks Ivan.
Your scan tool is priceless.
Ivan's best 'scantool' is his brain. You can buy a scan tool anywhere - Ivan is priceless.
Never ceases to amaze me how many of these issues are corrosion/ground/rubbing related. Makes sense with older vehicles I suppose, especially if the problem is intermittent and the parts cannon has been emptied. EDIT: Also, from experience with my 2012 Yukon, the engine compartment diagram showing the fuel pump relay & fuse, it is incorrect. It's a carry-over from 2007-09 (I think) models which still had them. They're actually in the FP Module afterward.
Great start with the first truck. Always throw and non OE part with a 5V ref sensor out the DORMAN and get a new OE or a used OE if new isn't available.
That was great fix on the Chevy's
The green crusties are vicious around here. LOL. Can I quote you on that?
I’m usually team butt connector. But it has to be done correctly and it has to be the shrink and seal with the jelly in it. None of the cheap auto parts store crap.
Of course there are some situations where you just can’t get in there with a set of crimpers and that’s where that ts100 comes in handy.
About 90% of the wiring repairs I do, there's barely enough room to get to the broken wire... Not sure how to explain that 😅
21:28 now with extra green 🟢
Hey Ivan, I have a 2013 C1500 6.2 and it doesn’t have that FP relay or a FP fuse in position 20 either. It does have a FSCM 25A fuse in position 21.
I find it incredible that parts stores still stock and sell parts that are 100% defective right out of the box. Not one aftermarket Chinese throttle body has ever worked properly in any vehicle ever, yet they somehow sell millions per year.
I have a Dorman TB on a 2009 Silverado that works properly. I put a bunch of Dorman parts on that truck just to see how bad they are. Haven't had a problem yet after 6 months (knock on wood).
Quality solder repair
Good job, Ivan! Two accurate diagnostics and simple wire repairs. For the next one, crazy tail lights are usually caused by a bad ground and power returning through other lamps (at least, it used to be like that) 🙂
Oh it's way more interesting than a bad ground 😁😉
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics LOL, I would imagine so, if it made it to video 🙂
Crimps are generally more reliable than solder joints in an environment where there is vibration but the crimps do have to be made properly and checked after crimping is done.
Caterpillar wants repairs to wiring to be made by crimp and seal connectors, because solder joints can't take the vibrations.
Ivan is my HERO. I come here to learn from your work.
This is why I've always driven Ford. I couldn't image having 3 Silverado's and they all have a problem. lol
3 Chevy trucks, this is great
Good place to start a JUNK YARD.😂
Ivan San.. you definitely need to make a "Green Crusties" t-shirt!
Lolol 😎 🇺🇲
2006 Tahoe 5.3 I spent 3 years chasing TPS/throttle body correlation problems. Cleaning, 2 AFTER MARKET throttle bodies, multiple TBS replaced, TPS replaced no luck. Using scan tool and oscilloscope never saw a problem on test equipment. Replaced with GM throttle body and now 2 years later FIXED!
Yup, classic :)
I put a Dorman on my 2009 to see how it holds up🤣. Its been chugging along for 6 months.
Looks like somebody whacked their thumb with a hammer, Ouch!
Ivan the green crusty king 🤴
So far, no parts canon used. Just good diagnostics employed to find the relevant issues.
Great video and chasing wires looking for the green crusties.
I’m chasing an intermittent crank no start on my 42’ coach. No wiring diagram available, 98% of the wires are white, some wires are marked, none of the relays and circuit breakers are marked.🤯
Have you ever used a tone generator to look for a broken wire and do those work?
i had a older oldsmobile doing kinda the same thing replaced app pedal with only thing i could find dorman. signal had correct values on scanner but when using scope the dorman signal was in spec but the line was fuzzy or dirty talked back and forth with the tech man at dorman which was very helpful finally he said go buy oem and connect and call me back which i did the new one worked perfect he couldn't understand why dorman didn't work sent him pics he said was going to do a research ticket and find out how the little difference could stop it from working. finally found out they had to go to better quality parts in the app sensor surprised me he got back with me he also had me send the app to his office for inspection.
IV fixed a few with broken wires because the shock mount rotted off and it pinched the wires
Great video. What soldering iron were you using in the video ?
Added to video description :)
Dunno which is more confounding ‐-- disgnosing the malfunction or repair a defective wire in the most complicated location requiring the most flexible of human body parts ...
Ivan, your videos are much appreciated by viewers in central England, however can you in future pronounce the word solder and not sodder.

I know that Kenny Wessel & Eric O both use butt connectors but I wouldn't get that they're a Steve Walmsley mechanic in Australia, one of the reasons that I am not a mechanic by trade is because I will upset too many mechanics who are that Walmsley in my area (Jason & Dean as well).
When I was doing an introductory Automotive course which was a joint school initiative with my local tech 30 years ago it was more of an industrial sort of course for anyone who wanted to become a mechanic but it was more to become a diesel fitter or mechanic or a plant mechanic,I could still cross over into automotive service to service & repair light vehicles but.
Well, one of my teachers there was showing us how to solder wires, the trick was to bare both ends back, twist them together then to solder them !
I'd take uncut zip ties any day to ones that have been cut leaving a razor sharp edge behind. Especially in tight places where you might have to squeeze your hands into.
🎶when you're driving in a Chevy...🎶
I like my non insulated barrel crimps with marine heat shrink but for that throttle body solder would've looked a lot better, much lower profile for that big of a harness
Yup - SMA staggers the crimps better for that reason , from what I’ve seen, and goes with a bigger wire loom split tubing when needed.
@@TVwatcher-ic3ne This is true.
You don't have to solder to the pin. New pins aren't hard to find. But you need a barrel crimp tool to install on the wire correctly. Or you can buy a new 2-pin connector with pigtails. Or forget the connector by using knife or handshake terminals with shrink tube over the top. I wouldn't do that for more than two wires, though.
If the crimp passes a tug test, it's good if you didn't crimp on top of the insulation (not stripped properly). For multiple wires like that, they make bare butt connectors that you then put shrink tube over. It ends up a lot less bulky than insulated connectors almost as slim as soldering. But they need a different set of crimps than insulated. Solder joints that pass a tug test aren't necessarily good. It could be a cold solder joint.
i have seen eric o solder wires on his channel. be Nice. are you guys fueding?
I snip wire ties,.it looks professional to me in my opinion,
but then again it lets the next guy know someone has been there....
What did you do to your thumb Ivan? Ouch 😂
Ivan what do you use to seal a wire that you puncture to test voltage? Is there a sealant?
There is a phenomenal tech out there that does electrical diagnostic on vehicles. His seal? Nail polish!

The "Green crusties" name is being changed to WIRE PUS
Ouch what did you do to your left thumb?
i guess the gm engineers didnt learn from fords mistake of fpdm location

Odd . GMT800 is one if not the most reliable american vehicle here in the middle east. Maybe the issues affect the ones in the rust belt there in the US. Only common issue here is the instrument cluster cracking the solder joints on the pcb.
Yes GMT800 1999-2006 is mostly bomb-proof. 2011 is NOT GMT800 ;)
My bad thought the white one was gmt800😅 i was so focused onto the diagnoses😂
Between crap aftermarket parts and manufacturers not supporting their parts after ten years the motoring public is screwed. That wasn’t Eric O’s splice work, Eric O would have staggered the splices.
I have to ask--I see a lot of insulation piercing in you videos; do you seal those up when you're done with your diagnosing?
Nah I just let the green crusties do their thing... Job security! 😀

Not very old vehicles, but appallingly poor design and construction, along with awful weather conditions leading to rusty frames and abraded wiring. Many of the cars you work on would not even be allowed on the road here in Oz.

Crimped connections are inherently bad, solder connections are inherently good. WRONG! Either is good when done properly, in any car, wire to wire solder connections are extremely rare, meanwhile every pin in every connector is crimped. Solder can be done incorrectly just like crimping can. And solder has just as many pitfalls as crimping.
Sure, you can botch any repair if you try hard enough :))
Feeling are hurt huh ivan?

Y talk crap about another good mechanic in the same industry? Your way to fix things isnt always right... i have seen you hillbilly some stuff on here that wouldnt last a day.
