Hi Shelagh, if you want to do 'invisible' machine applique this is a great technique. There are several different ways of approaching turned edge machine applique, but this is the one I find easiest and neatest. Take your time and you'll have wonderful results!
Learn how to do beautiful, invisible, turned-edge appliqué using your home sewing machine and a simple zigzag stitch. After adding quilting to your finished piece, the appliqué stitching will be almost invisible. This video demonstrates an easy method for invisible appliqué that will allow you to produce precise, neat edges to your appliqué shapes.
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing. Can I ask what do you follow for appliqué. Is it needle or part of foot? I'm new to appliqué and trying to attempt a simple heart. One side goes ok, but the other side not so well. Either stitches don't have contact or they go off alignment when turning. TIA.
Hi Christina. Thanks for your question. Invisible machine appliqué is a tricky technique for a beginner, but there's no reason why you shouldn't have a go - it might just take a bit of practice. When doing this technique you need to watch the needle closely - it needs to just catch the very edge of the fabric. By using an extremely narrow stitch width, the stitches will then become almost invisible. Can I suggest, if you are finding this a challenge, that you may achieve better results with a simpler appliqué edge such as zigzag or blanket stitch. I have tutorials for both of those here on RUclips, and you'll also find them (and loads of other things) on my website at www.deborahwirsu.com . I hope it all goes well for you!
This is the best tute I’ve found ANYwhere on the web for producing extraordinarily precise and elegant turned-edge appliqué. Thank you.

The wooden manicure stick is a brilliant idea. There are overpriced stainless steel tools on the market, which are unnecessary.
HI Phoebe - I totally agree! I'm rather a devotee of 'economy'!
