    My wife and I just purchased a David Brown 990 tractor as our first and only tractor on our farm and I must just say thank you so much for your videos. I have never worked on any sort of vehicle before outside of changing tires and your videos are so helpful. I'm changing all of the filters and oils and I'd be pretty lost without you. Hi Steve, I've a 1394, which is similar to your tractor. A lot of people use super universal oil in the engine and hydraulics. Seems strange not to use hydraulic oil when you could be mixing implements with modern tractors. I think that the rear lift needs to be up or down to empty the cylinder, so you might have some litres there... Thanks, need to do mine now.

    you could use a piece of hydraulic tube to attatch to your rear external hydraulic line to empty most of the hydraulic oil before you unscrew the plug in the bottom, that way it's less of a mess. (je kan eens tuk olieleiding in de achterste pries de force steken en het merendeel van de oil zo aflaten voordat je de stop losdraaid, dat werkt properder)

    I am not very familiar with these tractors but I was under the impression that the transmission oil serviced all the hydraulics and the axles. You only drained the oil in the transmission. Does that leave residual dirty oil in the axles and loader hydraulic lines which will contaminate your clean oil? Are you sure you don’t have to drain pto , axles and all locations not just the filter sump?

    • @D3Sshooter
      @D3Sshooter  3 года назад +2

      Yes you are right, it servers all those...there will be some residual oil indeed that is why I make sure the pistons are down... I should have stated that . I will do a check on what you stated, and you might be right.

    Mr. Steve, I have a question. My father has a David Brown 990 but the PTO keeps slipping out of gear when engaged. The PTO works and spins the brushcutter however it quickly slips out of gear after a while and disengages. Do you have any suggestions on how we can fix it? In addition can you go over the operation and schematic of the PTO on the David Brown 990 in a future video?

    • @D3Sshooter

      Thanks for the comments, well I guess that you have worn gears

    • @walterbuller9171
      @walterbuller9171 2 года назад

      This can happen with most any tractor. When I am bushogging with my DB 990, I pull the PTO lever forward to engage it, then I hook one end of a strong bungee cord to the lever, and hook the other end on whatever other part of the tractor that will keep a firm tension on the lever. Works perfectly. Just remember to remove the bungee cord and disengage the lever before shutting off the tractor so the momentum of the bushog blades don't continue to turn the PTO gears when the motor is no longer supplying power to the PTO.

    • @D3Sshooter
      @D3Sshooter  3 года назад +1

      When referencing motor oil weight, you are actually referring to the viscosity grade or the tendency of a liquid to flow slowly or quickly. The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) developed a grading system to designate the viscosity level of single grade and multigrade motor oils.
      In single grade oils, the lower the number, the better it flows at cold temperatures. Likewise, the higher the number, the thicker the oil. In regard to multigrade oils, the first number in the code, such as 10W in SAE 10W-30, means that the oil can still be pumped by the engine at a temperature as low as a single grade 10W oil.

    After changing the transmission oil the tractor seems to struggle on even the slightest grade and has to go into the lowest gear. This never happened with the watery sludge that was in it. I hate to impose but you are pretty much a mechanical guru...do you have any idea what is now going on, is it the clutch or what do you think...thanks in advance

    • @D3Sshooter
      @D3Sshooter  3 года назад

      Thanks for the comments, that is very strange.. does the engine rev up and the tractor picks up speed slowly ? if so that could be a clutch problem. But that would not explain why it would be affected by the oil change. What does it do in neutral ? does it rev ok ? does the lift works properly on idle ? Are you sure you don't have the manual brake on ?

    • @oldcrowe
      @oldcrowe 3 года назад

      Everything seems to work well, loader, 3 point hitch, engine purrs like a woodchuck and it travels well on level ground. No I’m gonna sound like a real clown... but I have no knowledge of a manual brake 😊 where would I find that? I have to confess this is a tractor I got for my son’s hobby farm and the whole thing is a puzzle to me, so many knobs and dials and levers and none of the tags are readable... I’m gonna need to buy a manual on line... thanks you’re an amazing young fellow!

    Hello Steve and thank you for the informations you provide. I have the DB 990 implematic the red one 1964 model. Suddenly while i was working, the lift arms didn't work. I pulled the lever up without any load, and the arms worked and went up but when you put weight they don't. I'm assuming that might be the hydraulic pump or it needs changing the hydraulic oil filter and the oil itself because it might have some dirt in it and blocks the good flowing of the oil, so the hydraulics can work correctly. Notice that when i am revving the arms move better but again can't lift weight. What do you think it is the problem?

    • @D3Sshooter
      @D3Sshooter  3 года назад

      Well they should lift with weight , have a look on the video that explains the entire hydraulics system... I am sure that you will be able to diagnose your issue after watching it as it could be so many things. Most likely mis adjusted or possible a pump issue ... measure the pressure of the pump if in doubt.

      Good questions, if you look careful you will see gearbox safe on the dipstick. meaning that there is enough oil for the gearbox. However that does not mean that there is enough for the hydraulics to drive pistons and ancillary elements. In other words , that little bit of oil ( 17-18 ltr) is enough for the gearbix

    Hoe de retourleiding nu aangesloten is is juist NIET goed bij deze selectamatic modellen. De retour wil je altijd aansluiten op de aangewezen plek bij deze trekkers en dat is op het 'kamelenbultje' rechts naast de stoel(staat er ook op ingegoten) dit geldt ook voor een extra aansluiting zoals een ventielen blok of gewoon een enkelwerkende snelkoppeling. De versnellingsbak wordt als je hem dus goed aansluit gesmeerd met druk vanuit het hydraulische systeem en niet door dit drukloos te dumpen door de vuldop.

      I don't speak Dutch but seemingly this is exactly what I was going to comment. Implement's free return shouldn't be through fill plug, but as above said, to the "camel's hump" front plug. There's also another "official" return, on axle casing left of the seat is a plug for this purpose. Just wondering could this above comment be translated into English for wider audience.
      Otherwise this video is excellent like your others too.
