I've always loved Mortal Kombat as a kid, I played pretty much every game on the series at some point, and learning more about them has been a great experience. Thank you so much for the content.
I'm so glad RUclips recommended your videos to me. I 100% wasn't aware of the meta of the series at all and you have such a smooth voice to be able to explain it while also not assuming everyone knows what you are talking about.
MKT is my favorite. Still play it on my n64 to this day. It goes mkt > mk9 > mk11 for me. My best friend and I played this game almost everyday after school from middle school through freshman year of college. Legit YEARS playing this game. Anytime I visit him I have to bring my n64 😂. Absolute klassic
It was 2000 or 2001 that I first played Mortal Kombat 3, Sindel was actually the very first character I ever played, she's the whole reason I love the series.
i was 9yrs old when mk trilogy got released my mate had it n we used to play everyday at my house. was really addicted to this game. russia has big player base for mk trilogy aswel
Nightwolf had the red shoulder charge and the red arrow in the Sega Genesis version as well. Also, Rain's kick combo is HK, HK, LK, HK and then roundhouse - It is a five hits string, not four.
As a brazilian MK fan, I'm so happy to see my boy Speed mentioned here! I watched your UMK3 video and thought you were going to mention him there at first, then I thought you were not going to mention him at all, but you did here. He is an insane player and is a really nice dude. I personally learned a lot from his tutorial videos, most of the mechanics you mentioned in both your videos I learned from him. lol I'm also happy to see that the classic MK community still plays competitive in 2020. Great videos, very informative and fun to watch. It even makes me want to go back and play some classic MK ^^
Nice intro, MK Trilogy was a blast of fun game, one of the games I mostly played on PS1, and nice that you contacted with Byspeed he is such a good player and good person.
One of the best MK Games of all time. I adore this game. It's funny seeing this now because back when this came out the internet wasn't this evolved so most players had no idea how broken certain characters were or what kind of bugs existed.
As a South American Fighting game enthusiast, Im really glad you got to meet BySpeed work on MK community. He's well recognized as one of classic MK (I, II, 3, UMK3, Trilogy) speedrunners, as well of being a specialist in both arcade and console versions of the game competitive wise, especially SNES UMK3.
Just when i was aboutb to go to sleep befre work (*which is in 4 hours) u guys HAD to post this! lol couldnt help myself. MK page game too strong! This Meta series is hands down my favorite MK content on the interwebs.
I have been waiting and yet again you did not disappoint. That intro was CLEAN! This series is so incredibly compelling and I'm already pumped for the next one!
Ayyy, the ability to disable blood in this game came in so clutch as a kid. My parents were never going to allow me to have this game because of how violent was but I convinced them I could just turn off the blood and it'd turn into a regular fighting game like Street Fighter. Of course, the second they weren't home I would just turn the blood back on lmao.
Mortal Kombat Trilogy for PS1 was formative for me, it remains my favorite version of MK to this day. I'd long wondered why it never had a re-release, or why it seemed to fall out of favor. This answered many of the questions I had. Thank you for this.
You know you've made a great video when 46 minutes goes by just as quickly as it did. Thank you for another amazing edition to MK Meta. Sick intro as well👊
Cheers from Argentina! It's a great vid. It's very true that UMK3 is the favorite here, mainly because the SEGA Genesis was huge in our country. Many people still buy the Genesis today, so plenty of fresh blood haha
What a game that was. I played it on the PC which was a port of the PS1 version. Can't wait for the next episode, keep up the amazing work! Also the new intro is damn sick!
Another great MK Meta video guys. I loved trilogy as it was basically my childhood Mortal Kombat game on the PS1. I agree with everyone else that the new intro for this is absolutely sick and should stick around 👍
Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a new MK Meta video pop up. Great video. One thing that always bothered me about the MK1 Kano that MKT has is that his victory and fatality sprites aren't the original ones, but some weird hybrid of MK1 and MK3 Kano sprites recolored to fit his MK1 outfit. Not sure why they couldn't reuse those specific sprites, but it always stuck out to me as weird.
Played this on N64 all the time and got really good with Johnny Cage. I was actually able to pull off strings of combos with him, something I never was able to do before. It's because of the this game that Cage is still one of my favorite characters in the franchise to this day. Thank you for the wonderful video. Subbed.
My dream game would be a new MK Trilogy with the same graphics and gameplay, but with all the new MK characters added from 4 to 11. No matter how good the new games look and play, nothing comes close to the UMK3/Trilogy style. In my mind, that is Mortal Kombat. Great video!
This was a great video to watch. I had no idea that South America had such a huge UMK3 scene. Keep it up, Ketchup! Thanks for all the hard work you do for these videos!
these videos are quite amazin. i'm not at all a technical MK player but i used to play some versions back in the day a lot. i'm curious to see your MK4 meta vid and am really hyped about that one man keep doing the thing!
I really appreciated hearing all these positive things about MKT. I was 12 when I got it at launch on PSX, and it's actually the game that made me choose the Playstation over the N64 because of all the extra content. I was always sad that the tournaments shunned MKT players in favor of UMK3 players, but I understand now that I'm older. Also this video really opened my eyes about the N64 version and why it's a better tournament game, possibly the best classic MK tournament game out there IMHO.
I played a special romhack called Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy a lot back in middle school. I originally thought this was a romhack of trilogy but it ran on a Sega Genisis emulator so it was probably actually a romhack of UMK3. But anyway I loved it. There were a ton of characters added. You could play every version of every character from the first 3 games. Also just about every problem from trilogy and umk3 that you mentioned was gone (I think; it's been awhile). I remember when I was in 7th grade at lunch I was playing it on my school computer in thr cafeteria. I was playing as Sektor and I did a fatality and the principal walked by and stood and watched as Sektor crushed the opponent with the compactor. I got suspended for a week LMAO Fun times... :)
I found this channel looking for info about primal rage and now I watching meta about a game made over 20 years ago... just have my subscription. Good stuff
Being born in '92 (Same year as MK1) I wasnt introduced to the series until '97 (5 years old). My first game was Mythologies on N64 so that game holds a special place in my heart regardless of how bad in might be in all actuality. BUT the center of chaos in my family when it came to video games was certainly MK TRILOGY ( and MK4 to a slightly lesser extent) plenty of $1 bets and extra chores were gained during our time with this gem! I was always intrigued that on the internet this game got alot of flack for being broken. This video cleared a lot of that up so I REALLY appreciate this call back to my child hood. That said I would LOVE an HD remaster that includes both Chameleon and Khameleon. I mostly played on N64 but we eventually played on playstation as well. Also its funny how everyone's favorite character comes from these games. Trilogy is THE Mortal Kombat roster.
Next to MK2 this one is on of my top favorites. I grew up with MK Trilogy and it had been part of my life eversince. If anyone were to ask me 'who's your favorite musical artist' or 'what type of music you like to listen too?' I'd say Dan Forden - MK Trilogy OST. I've been listening to that track for a decade now.
@Your Mom's Creepy Uncle Not really. Remember, this is 1996. Generally speaking you aren't going to get realistic looking human models that would be able to seamlessly fit into actual photos of actual people doing moves. The best they could do is some photoshopping around with some animations but even that would lead to some discrepancies (Example: Home releases of Street Fighter: The Movie: The game)
@@RippahRooJizah they did for Trilogy, though. They hired a new person to be Johnny Cage and got some of the people back for the new moves and running animations for some of the MK2 characters
@@profo4544 Dude i know!!! when i thought about it a few years back to get it for my game collection and to play once and awhile, the prices were too high for my taste. lol
I've been away from gaming for years, but I played a lot of MKT when I was a kid. Too bad I was just a kid that didn't really know what I was doing. Once I grew older, I discovered KOF and Tekken, and when I remembered the MK series had buttons for running and blocking, I kind of gave up on the games. But they were indeed very fun. Now, many years later, I see the competitive scene and their incredible technique, and I do get the itch to come back. My favorite characters were Cyber Smoke, Classic Sub Zero, MK II Kung Lao, and a few others.
I think thsi was long before I started using mid roll ads, i try to keep it to a small amount but sometimes when you say yes to ads these days YT just slaps a bunch on them anyway? it's super odd
17:09 You're correct about Baraka's blade spin move being intended for inclusion in MKII. Either Electronic Gaming Monthly or Gamepro even posted a pic of it during the early months of MKII's release period so I guess they may have considered it OP and removed it before it ever found its way into a publicly released version of the game.
I was born in 96 and I absolutely love this and tekken 3, I played and bested my brothers and others players with each character, still would play them sometime on emulators
It didn't cause the arcade board Midway used for Ultimate MK3 is very limited. It's so limited that some of the original stages like the Bank and the red Hidden Portal stages were cut. Since MK Trilogy had way more contents, it make sense for that to be a console exclusives. Do notice that when they transcend from MK3 to Ultimte MK3, the only characters they brought back were palette swap characters, that's cause the arcade board is very limited and couldn't handle more character models. They also remove all the endings of MK3 replacing those with just text endings for Ultimate MK3. Only in MK Trilogy do they brought those back. Midway is losing money at the time Ultimate MK3 came out and couldn't afford to get more expensive arcade board to port MK Trilogy to arcade plus they still had to catch to the 3D craze of the time so they just jump straight to MK4 instead.
@@VOAN the only reason Johnny Cage wasn't in MK3/UMK3 was because of Daniel Pesina's lawsuit against Midway. He originally was going to be excluded from MKT until they found a new actor for him. Raiden and Baraka not being used had something to do with Carlos Pesina. I don't exactly remember what happened with him.
really great video dood. i grew up playing UMK3 on SNES and was totally blown away when I played MKT on PS1 at a friend's house. Also that MKT N64 tournament on chirotob's channel was really epic.
Though not major, a couple of things that were missed were: 1) Pit II had its stage fatality capability removed as they didn't want to add the unique falling animation for all the new and updated characters. 2) Shao Khan and Motaro each had a fatality in the N64 version, but not in the other variants 3) The Star Bridge stage was a re-skin of the Pit II and was only included on the N64 version. 4) The N64 version had a different cheat menu (Separate Red, Blue and Green question marks vs second extra green question mark). One notable difference in those menus is that N64 didn't have the cheat for 1-button fatalities, but did have the option for unlimited fatality time which would only end if you made contact with your opponent. 5) On the N64 version, Scorpion had three fatalities rather than two (the two from UMK3 plus a new one). 6) The N64 had a hidden Super Endurance mode where on the toughest ladder you would fight Khameleon and then nothing but endurance matches until you reached Motaro. You needed to beat this mode in order to have access to all of Shao Kahn's treasures after his defeat; all the normal ladders would have the treasure set limited in some way.
I'm actually aware of all those things you mentioned and I had even had b-roll recorded of most of it, but I chose not to include them as they weren't competitively relevant and mk meta focuses on the higher level mechanics. I didn't include motato and Shao Kahn awful fatalities because you have to be super careful as a mk RUclips these days :( Thanks for mentioning it all but there's a reason I didn't include it!
I kinda want to see an updated version of Mk Trilogy. That is, combine the best parts of all versions, fix the bugs & issues that hampered the game, add some more stages w/ some pumped tunes, get rid of the load times. I know it won't happen, but one can dream...

Really glad you enjoyed them! Actually being recommended by RUclips is almost impossible these days as a MK creator. Suppose we got lucky there :)
What an amazing video bro, from start to finish roller coaster of nostalgic feelings, well done
This video is just such a trip down memory lane.
Same here
We need an Arcade, HD, or Remaster version for consoles.
But, the best we have is the MUGEN MKT games.
@@JonesDylan874 yeah but for example tekken 5 had prev tekkens as bonus
@@JonesDylan874 i hate Mugens
There was a arcade version for the 360.
I’m dying for it, too. Current gen doesn’t even offer it as a download. So, so not outstanding.
It was 2000 or 2001 that I first played Mortal Kombat 3, Sindel was actually the very first character I ever played, she's the whole reason I love the series.
Oof, then you must hate Aftermath. I don’t blame you if you do, just saying. I’m on your side ;)
i was 9yrs old when mk trilogy got released my mate had it n we used to play everyday at my house. was really addicted to this game. russia has big player base for mk trilogy aswel
Nightwolf had the red shoulder charge and the red arrow in the Sega Genesis version as well.
Also, Rain's kick combo is HK, HK, LK, HK and then roundhouse - It is a five hits string, not four.
Mk trilogy is the best mk game to ever exists.
On the 64
MK9 is the best
I grew up with this mk...it's my fav...I was PS baby tho I was a nes and snes fan till ps1 hit the market...I think the N64 sucked
I still play nes snes and ps1 on my phone tho
No question dude, none of the other games even come close.
brutality make me questioning my biology science credential
And oh yeah.
Shang tsung and the eye makeup.
He was trying to be in the Norwegian death metal band but forgot the white makeup.
Another awesome video guys, really enjoying these throwbacks, such nostalgia! 🐉
As a brazilian MK fan, I'm so happy to see my boy Speed mentioned here! I watched your UMK3 video and thought you were going to mention him there at first, then I thought you were not going to mention him at all, but you did here. He is an insane player and is a really nice dude. I personally learned a lot from his tutorial videos, most of the mechanics you mentioned in both your videos I learned from him. lol
I'm also happy to see that the classic MK community still plays competitive in 2020.
Fantastic channel. This plus the many tutorials on how to better myself in MK11 make it so informative for me and other newcomers. Thank you.
This video is amazing. Please make more of these, you guys represent MK really well. I'm so proud of you guys because this was amazing 🤘🏾!
I have been waiting and yet again you did not disappoint. That intro was CLEAN! This series is so incredibly compelling and I'm already pumped for the next one!
1:42 Raiden really be uppercuttin that man
Ayyy, the ability to disable blood in this game came in so clutch as a kid.
I am 43 ... been playing Mk since launch in the arcades. Mk2 and UMK3 is my wheelhouse... I spent years in arcades playing MK... good vid.....
Another great MK Meta video guys. I loved trilogy as it was basically my childhood Mortal Kombat game on the PS1. I agree with everyone else that the new intro for this is absolutely sick and should stick around 👍
Dear god.... just hearing about how broken my main Sub-Zero is made me want to buy the n64 version
I played this on N64 since I never owned the first Playstation. One of my top 3 favorites next to Ocarina of Time and Fighting Force!
Aw man. I had fighting force on a demo disc as a kid and was always salty I couldn't ever find the full game.
@@PNDKM was it only the first level you were able to play?
Nothing beats the feeling of seeing a new MK Meta video pop up. Great video. One thing that always bothered me about the MK1 Kano that MKT has is that his victory and fatality sprites aren't the original ones, but some weird hybrid of MK1 and MK3 Kano sprites recolored to fit his MK1 outfit. Not sure why they couldn't reuse those specific sprites, but it always stuck out to me as weird.
MY BOY THIS STUFF IS BRILLIANT. HIGHLIGHT OF THE CHANNEL.
Alright, I absolutely love the production quality on all the MK Meta videos and that (new?) intro is amazing! Good stuff!
Played this on N64 all the time and got really good with Johnny Cage. I was actually able to pull off strings of combos with him, something I never was able to do before. It's because of the this game that Cage is still one of my favorite characters in the franchise to this day. Thank you for the wonderful video. Subbed.
Cage was awesome in Trilogy and looked awesome too.
Thanks for all the hard work you do for these videos!
the Blade Spin made it into MK2+ ;)
Love this series, love this channel ketchup and mustard are actual mk legends
these videos are quite amazin. i'm not at all a technical MK player but i used to play some versions back in the day a lot. i'm curious to see your MK4 meta vid and am really hyped about that one man keep doing the thing!
Gotta love the passion you guys put into this, amazing and sick intro
I play this game religiously when I was a kid. Still my favourite mortal Komat
I found this channel looking for info about primal rage and now I watching meta about a game made over 20 years ago... just have my subscription. Good stuff
Still got this game on ps1. That intro unlocked some memories I ain't experienced in a while
Nice videos. love learning all the little ins and outs about the scene ^.^
Absolutely blast . loving the series guys !
THAT INTRO IS FIIIIIIIRE!! 🔥 🔥 love this vid! My fav all time MK
13:46 that looks beyond busted 😂 and as soon as I see that I see an even more broken move
In "Those Days" I built Arcade Sticks for people :D
Nice MK Meta intro! You guys are awesome, keep up the fantastic work!!👍🙃
I low key hate one thing about this game and that scorpion is made redundant by human smoke.
Agreed, scorpion is my favorite ninja but may as well play smoke on this one
Next to MK2 this one is on of my top favorites. I grew up with MK Trilogy and it had been part of my life eversince. If anyone were to ask me 'who's your favorite musical artist' or 'what type of music you like to listen too?' I'd say Dan Forden - MK Trilogy OST. I've been listening to that track for a decade now.
Ah even Midway didn't like making new animations lol
To be fair, "Making new animations" would involve hiring people back into a studio
@@RippahRooJizah I know. Lol I'm just joking
@@johnnysasaki I knew they got a new guy for Cage, but I was unaware they got some actors back.
I played the sega saturn version as a kid in 96. i didnt have the load time problems so when i got to play the PS1 version, i was very surprised.
Saturn versions the best, but really hard to find.
@@profo4544 Dude i know!!! when i thought about it a few years back to get it for my game collection and to play once and awhile, the prices were too high for my taste. lol
@@liquidsnake23 The Saturn version of MKT wasn't released until 1997. You're probably thinking of UMK3.
@@the757general2 no I did play trilogy but you’re right I may had got the years mixed up and it wasn’t til 97 I played then.
I would love to see mk meta for deception and the online clan wars💯
I think he already made one
@@MK-vi2cm nah just armageddon even tho it's close to the game mechanics the online clan wars ia different in deception
@@officialgoon4137 You sure? I remember seeing some video by some youtuber going in depth on the competitive MKDA and MKD scenes like a year ago
Huh I will go look it up thanks for the heads up💯
I've been away from gaming for years, but I played a lot of MKT when I was a kid.
Honestly, I’ve got mad respect you guys did t put any mid-roll ads in a forty-five minute video
I think thsi was long before I started using mid roll ads, i try to keep it to a small amount but sometimes when you say yes to ads these days YT just slaps a bunch on them anyway? it's super odd
17:09 You're correct about Baraka's blade spin move being intended for inclusion in MKII. Either Electronic Gaming Monthly or Gamepro even posted a pic of it during the early months of MKII's release period so I guess they may have considered it OP and removed it before it ever found its way into a publicly released version of the game.
tcrf.net/Mortal_Kombat_II_(Arcade)#Unused_Sprites
The sprites for it actually still exist in the Arcade version's files.
@@firstnamelastnamesb Beat me to it.
That rain kick part was crazy😂😂
I was born in 96 and I absolutely love this and tekken 3, I played and bested my brothers and others players with each character, still would play them sometime on emulators
I WISH MORTAL KOMBAT TRILOGY HAD A ARCADE VERSION OF IT
It didn't cause the arcade board Midway used for Ultimate MK3 is very limited.
Maybe someone can do an arcade ROM hack some day!
I wish to see that now
Thanks for telling me that Voan
@@VOAN the only reason Johnny Cage wasn't in MK3/UMK3 was because of Daniel Pesina's lawsuit against Midway. He originally was going to be excluded from MKT until they found a new actor for him. Raiden and Baraka not being used had something to do with Carlos Pesina. I don't exactly remember what happened with him.
Probably the best Mortal Kombat ever made. All the original characters in one game. This is what Mortal Kombat 9 wanted to be
MKT is so fun that even to this day is my favorite game to watch tournament
really great video dood. i grew up playing UMK3 on SNES and was totally blown away when I played MKT on PS1 at a friend's house. Also that MKT N64 tournament on chirotob's channel was really epic.
9.95 phil and co had some sick East Coast events it looks like. I used to watch them in the MK9 days.
@@PNDKM that's really awesome, i sure do miss seeing MK9
MK Trilogy was one of my fav games when it first came out on PS1
Though not major, a couple of things that were missed were:
1) Pit II had its stage fatality capability removed as they didn't want to add the unique falling animation for all the new and updated characters.
2) Shao Khan and Motaro each had a fatality in the N64 version, but not in the other variants
3) The Star Bridge stage was a re-skin of the Pit II and was only included on the N64 version.
I didn't include motato and Shao Kahn awful fatalities because you have to be super careful as a mk RUclips these days :(
Thanks for mentioning it all but there's a reason I didn't include it!
Another great video! I have fond memories of playing Trilogy on N64 back in the day.
I kinda want to see an updated version of Mk Trilogy. That is, combine the best parts of all versions, fix the bugs & issues that hampered the game, add some more stages w/ some pumped tunes, get rid of the load times.
I know it won't happen, but one can dream...
Kudos for the effort man, one can really feel the passion in your videos.
If they remastered this game for modern consoles with balance fixes and a graphic upgrade(re adding missing sprites) it would be the best
