I'd love to see a live 3pm Premier League game on a Saturday. I don't think it would affect attendances given how expensive a season ticket is these days and you cant turn up at the gate to buy a ticket anymore. All the seats have been pre-sold already. As for lower leagues the fans will turn up in any case as its their club. Why would they stay at home instead to watch a PL game?

    • @AJ-ct8om

Because it isn't just about existing fans. It's about local people, young kids etc that clubs are always trying to attract. A 12 year old who lives in Cheltenham will find a Saturday 3pm kickoff in League 1/2 way more appealing to go to with his dad when there's nothing else to watch than Liverpool v Man City on at the same time. The Lower Leagues are littered with people who grew to love their local team through going and witnessing live football. Being introduced to football at a young age via a TV and watching the best players in the world from your living room and growing up with endless Premier League coverage will make local and lower league football infinitely less attractive to watch

As a fan of Gateshead I've always wanted to see the data on attendance on games played during the blackout Vs games played when Newcastle are on the TV. I personally don't believe that significant number of people who live in Byker think oh I'll go and watch Gateshead because Newcastle aren't on the TV. I think this is especially true given how easy 3pm games are to pirate. This basically means the genie is out of the bottle for the 3pm blackout.
It's for that reason i actually think the 3pm blackout could be doing more harm then good. It puts up a front of trying to support the lower leagues. Instead what should happen is teams like Man City, Newcastle, Manchester United and frankly all the Premier League should put their hands in their pocket and help ensure the 'smaller' clubs around them don't go out of business. It would also be too their benefit. If Newcastle invested 8m a year in local sport all they'd have to do is sell 40m worth of players in 8 years. Something that's a lot easier to do when grass roots football in your area has been well funded.

As and when Sky lose the PL, they're finished.
Silly of the PL to sell to Sky and BT at a cheaper rate per annum than they had previous. It would be easier and better if an Amazon had bought it, so it's all on One platform that can be paid for per game or as a purely PL package instead of being forced to have a an "entertainment package" before paying extra for the football.
With 6 years they've also put a hold on any potential to create their own platform.
3 oclock thing is pointless. But even without that some games cant be watched. You can pay for Sky and BT and find yourself streaming a game at 3 oclock or whilst another game is on TV.
The Amazon games in December are good as you can watch whichever game you like out of all the games that are actually on.

USA is the market that could see the money in the Premier League go to new levels. The NFL is the richest league in any sport just by being popular in the USA and the USA TV channels are richest in the world and pay hundreds of billions for sport. The Premier League is exploding in popularity in the USA, to such an extent that one of the most popular sitcoms in the USA is about the Premier League in Ted Lasso. The Premier League has the smart idea built into their USA TV contract that at least one game a week on free to air TV in the USA giving the Premier League unprecedented viewership in the USA. That is why the American TV rights have seen the most growth of any region because it has gone from 600 million to 3 billion in just 10 years. And because it is getting decent ratings in the USA, if there is a bidding war between USA networks for the Premier League TV rights, you could triple the amount of money the Premier League is earning.

Protects the lower clubs could be an argument, but with our hospitality and pubs struggling over recent years. Showing all the games would help increase revenue for that industry. This would also increase the local community because week in week out we can watch our great teams play. People who can't afford to go the games don't magically grow money on a tree because of a blackout and can afford £100 for a trip to see their team. The Premier League is built upon the fans of this country, working class attending game, increasing revenue and demand for the sport. It isn't right that now it has became such a world recognised product that the broadcasters can just rinse the British Public. What happened to value for money and having a good product.

As a long term ST holder at NUFC it wouldn't bother me one iota if games were shown live on a Saturday - I'd still go. I think match going fans are a different breed to those who just want to watch their team on TV. That's not a dig at anybody, some people can't get there and some can't be bothered - they'd rather watch on TV and that's fine. I don't think it would affect the attendances one bit. You either love going to games, or you don't. For me there's nothing better than being there and being part of the club I love. But that's just me and everybody is different.
As for playing one of our games abroad? Gtfooh. We're Newcastle, we play in Newcastle and if someone abroad wants to watch us live then you'll be made more than welcome at SJP. Normal away games are hard enough without having a home game in America!!!
Football has always been a tribal affair. You dilute it if you take important league or cup games on tour. If it's not broken, please, stop trying to fix it.

A good way for non-league clubs to attract more fans is the Saturday 3pm kick-off. Local people who support a bigger club are more likely to attend their local non-league team if they can't watch a game live on TV at 3pm. So I hope scraping the blackout won't negatively effect clubs lower down the pyramid. But I think it is time to scrap it. Its completely unfair that people abroad can watch every game live but we in the UK aren't legally allowed to.

Due to how many games there anw now on TV across a weekend there is only 3-4 games on at 3pm in the premier league these days.

If so what you have said is it will not be sorted till 2029 to 2030 , by that then Man City could have 32 more trophies ,counting champions league. I also think 20% of Premier league wages should go to NHS, well the players use it more than normal people.

The funny thing is is that the States will overpay what our domestic companies do and will STILL charge the customer the same price if not $5-10 more. Sky and TNT do not understand that the customers will suffer and not them. Moving to VPN for USA Network, Peacock and NBC next season so I can watch EVERY game all for one price and not just a select few. Failing that, the Premier League should just do their own streaming service.
