- In this video I talk about how to break in a leather football (Wilson GST). The Wilson GST is the most popular used football by high school and college teams. Most people don't properly break the football in when they first get it so after watching this video you will know what to do.

Just got one can’t wait to see the updated one good video brotha
Very helpful this is the only tutorial that worked
I’ve been thinking about getting my own from academy and from watching your video I’m now 100% going to get it and I’m going to use your tips from breaking in the ball
Let’s go !!! Start it up!
Good thing this is the same ball I have. Thanks!!!
I just did it after a breaking it in a couple months ago I only did it one then and didn't do it vary good and still got alot of die off of it thank you
Yeah it’s easy to forget, next time try it this way!
Thank you so Much this helped
Came from tiktok
Great job man
Thanks my guy!
It keeps it tacky and a little bit softer it also makes the ball more durable
That ball just physically transformed from bright orange to a nice dark color
It was wet
@@Kevin-us9yv after having it for a while it turns darker and it’s not wet
If you put some leather conditioner on it after you strip it, it will be a lot softer.
Also, I use shaving cream to help get the die off. Rub it on, let it sit, then buff it off with a brush. I do it after I wipe it down with hot water after it drys.
does it matter what conditioner you use
@@christopherlee8use Wilson leather conditioner
My ball seems really old and it’s super slippery but it’s a light brown not dark should I take the same steps?
Guys - every time he says shoe “polish” he means “brush”. Please don’t put actual shoe POLISH on your football 😂
Thanks for the correction!! Lol
is a shoe brush the same thing as a leather brush
@@mason2256yes that will work too
I have a K2 leather ball for my son (not composite). I prepped the ball and had it looking fantastic with tack. I live in the southwest and the fields sometimes have dirt patches. What I noticed is when the ball hit the dirt, it lost its tackiness quickly. Steps used to prep: Wiped it down 3x, brushed, used a small amount of leather conditioner as recommended by Wilson, used the Wilson tack bar, and even tried applying the tack spray by Wilson as an experiment. Any thoughts?
I’ve noticed that if you are a little more generous with the leather conditioner, (putting a lot on will not really hurt the ball) then it will give you more of a long lasting stick to your football that is from the leather conditioner. Also, make sure that you brush your football a bunch, and most importantly before and right after you use the tack, because you need to brush the tack into the football, and frequent brushing can even help make it more sticky. Note - with the leather conditioner, for more stick, let it dry for closer to 12-24 hours for it to really soak in before you brush it.
I got my NFL duke ball but, im liking these GST footballs more than my duke, I need to get one!!
Gst footballs are way better
Does it damage the ball when I scrubbed the football whit a cold wet towel
idk if this is a dumb question but do i do this on an nfl ball
Can anyone please tell me, does the Kiwi Shoe polish Brush work (on a football) as good as the Wilson Football Brush..? Thanks
What does breaking in the football do. Love the vids keep up the good work
Deeg Breaking it in means to take off the wax on the ball so the can be more grippy and it last longer.
It’s easier to throw. Cuz right after u buy it it’s a lil slippery. Breaking it in let’s u grip it better
It helps to get the wax off the football, so you can use it in a game
Deff gonna have to break in my next ball haven’t actually bought a football in forever
Is Better the Wilson GTS 1005 or 1003?
my gst is coming today gonna prep it dont have my brush
Let’s go!!! Make sure you go get that brush from Wilson!
You can pick up a brush from the dollar store or use any brush that feels about like a toothbrush or even a toothbrush in a clutch
Should you clean it off after every time you use it in the grass/dirt/mud
Where did you buy the football
Removing the "dye" or preservative is optional. Wilson says it's not a dye and recommend not removing it. Unfortunately they don't actually explain what it really is (it's probably a trade secret).
I do notice that if you do not remove it then it will hinder the break in process a little. Especially if you are using leather conditioner or the Wilson tack bar.
Why do we need to stay away from concrete?
Me and my friends dot realy have grass and if we play on the grass we do have we get a $600 fine.
So when we play on concrete dose it damage the ball?
Keep in mind the leather is a type of skin what happens to your skin when it rubs concrete? It gets scuffed! Best option for you would be to buy a composite ball
What’s the link for the exact football?
Actually most colleges use Nike vapor footballs which have a different shape (pointier)
This ball is pretty pointy too
@@oldben1800no it’s rounded at the tip
Can I use this on a nike and can I use a hair brush
Does this work for a composite leather football because I bought one today and it’s really slippery, I wanna try this out but I’m not sure if that would make it worse
No don’t do this for a composite football
No but if you're looking to protect your composite ball from dirt and grass stains and gain some grip get yourself a bar of beeswax
Have a great day god love you
Came from tik tok
Appreciate it my guy!
My team muds the ball I’m a qb and I love the balls that are a little bit slippery but still have a little bit of tack
Just curious have you ever tried putting the football in the dryer just stimulate practicing with it to speed up the break-in process
Not a good idea. You never want the leather to dry out like that. Leather is literally skin and should be treated as such.
@@aidankeller1717exactly that's why it makes no sense to me when I see these NFL equipment staff guys condition the leather then rub granules of dirt into it with just absorbs the conditioner and clogs the pores making the leather unable to breathe and absorb moisture from the air
Can I use the ball on sand ?
Newbie--- does this procedure work on composite leather ball?
No composite footballs come ready so there’s no need
No but if you're looking to protect your composite football from dirt and grass stains and give it some more grip just get yourself a bar of beeswax
What’s a composite football? And can I get a link to this football?
A composite ball is just that it's composite it's not made of leather it's made of a composite leather
I did this and mine has a grey ish tone to it after the first day,is this normal ?
brooo same idk what to do
I jus got mine and my stripes are out of line and it’s driving me crazy
same 😂
I'm a neat freak and I've returned 2 balls for that exact reason, just for the 3rd one to be misaligned lol. Customer Service said it's hand-made and that it's the imperfections that make it special. I just stopped caring over time. The Wilson GST Prime was even worse. But I feel your pain LOL.
can you use a normal cleaning brush?
Use a leather brush or a Wilson brush
What's the difference between rubber and a leather football can you make a video about it because I want to know what's worth my money
im not much of a knower but rubber footballs dont last too long but leather last a lot more , i had a rubber one that only lasted a month ot two , would recommend leather for sure
The leather football lasts longer, i can make a video on it tho. I would say leather is worth it
@@MattChoi. yeah only have a rubber football that's around 6 months old and can launch it 35 yards idk if I can do better with the leather football
Nice Vid! Is it overall important to break in a football? Will it last longer that way?
It will improve the grip and catchability of the ball
properly break in then maintaned a ball can last few generations its cow skin a living product that requiers treatment
I have that exact football, its impossible to throw out of the box
Can u do this with a Wilson mvp official size?
Yeah if it's leather if not then no
Came from TikTok
Thank you!!
Honestly, don’t use water. Water isn’t leathers friend. Use Barbasol shave cream. It will condition the leather and pull that pink color out of the leather. Then get some Mississippi mud and coat the ball.
Can u do the same with an Leather NFL Ball?
Here's a video I uploaded on how to prep a Wilson NFL football or any leather football for that matter
ruclips.net/video/JmQZQ-S0dR0/видео.htmlsi=GozFqaLTHY4zM166
Does it work on the 45$ one?
No it will not
Disclaimer:make sure you use a proper brush and do not get too much water on it because I ruined mine. Luckily I was able to return the ball
Bro I think I ruined mine
is a crep protect brush good enough? what brush did u use that ruined it
@@giancdna1333 make sure you use a leather brush for leather.
I just ruined mines, now I’m about to cry 😭
@@EthanTuupo how did it get ruined? won’t it just dry out? then you can just sleep some leather conditioner on it (or that Wilson “tack bar” stuff), & should be good.
what happens if my ball turns lighter instead of darker?
That’s what happened to my ball i ruined it
@@Alejandro-mv1lh same it’s so hard to actually Break it in
Just brushing the ball ain't gonna get it completely dark. You gotta add mud if you really want the football dark brown
Can u do this with the NFL ball?
I uploaded a video on how to prep any leather football however I used a Wilson NFL football for demonstration
ruclips.net/video/JmQZQ-S0dR0/видео.htmlsi=GozFqaLTHY4zM166
I’m not sure if mine is fully dry yet but I did this once and it’s now a lighter color than before. Should I keep going?
Same thing happened to me
@@gavinsmyth9629 have this worked for u yet or no?
@@ameads6792 No it hasn’t, I just tried breaking it in yesterday and the same thing happened to me with the lighter color and it’s not really that grippy.
@@gavinsmyth9629 shit
@@ameads6792 hopefully he reply’s and tells us what to do
Can I use my hands instead of using a brush
Yeah I think you can I think he said that works great 👍🏼
Quick question is it like hot or warm?
Hot but not to hot
@@user-tg4su7fo2fahhh thx bruv
can i use a normal brush?
You can use pretty much any brush that feels about like a toothbrush and fact you can even use a toothbrush if you have to either one of those brushes you use to clean tile or a bathtub with

Anyone have a problem with the nose of the football. Both sides extremely hard, and hurt to catch. Better not get hit in the face. Any tips ...or is this unusual?
It is not sticky when you first get it, it is slippery
Did anyone else’s ball turn really light
Ta
I’d suggest not soaking it, wring the towel out and wipe it 100 strokes or however many, but let it dry for 15/20 minutes then repeat 2 more times, after that, brush the panels in a upward motion for 5 minutes, but that’s my intake on it, good video though 👍🏼
Great insight!! Yeah sometimes it makes the ball too damp
Yes the trick is 1) shaving cream, 2) leather conditioner, 3) mud (yes, mud), 4) wax
I did this and mine just dried , I don't think it was worth doing tbh.
Play catch with it
you didnt remove all the yellow tan, it needs more time and more towel rubbing in all direction. you need to use horse saddle grease product to soften and condition / moisturize the the cow leather. apply saddle product buff let dry for 24h and repeat at least 3 times. remove greasy residue with car drying towel. then brush with a wilson brush that rub a tack bar before. They have probably other secrets in ncaa nfl. if someone knows them pliz let me know.
Can you still break it in after having the ball for a couple of months?
If the ball is still more orange rather than brown, then yes you can still break it in
Choi is just korean last name bro🤣🤣
That’s not how you breaking a ball your post to mudball like what is that?
People on the streets can’t see you have a football on your lap. Just saying
this is a scaam. I tried this myself, just the way he did it, and my leather, wilson, gst, football is now broken
nice video too bad i got practice with four brand new balls to break in, in about 30 mins
Personally I wouldn’t recommend this, just get a Wilson prep kit and Wilson leather conditioner. That way you don’t run the risk of rubbing off the pebbles.
you cant apply conditionner on hydrophobic / tacky layer and tan dye layer. it requiers to be remove first.
🚩WARNING🚩 Do Not Use A MicroFiber Towel 🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
Dont do this it ruined my ball
This is so bad
Never wet the towel. You just ruined that ball
