Can an RFID tag be put on each piece so that an RFID sensor can be used to find out the distance between the electro-magnet and the piece? And if the piece is a different distance away than where it is supposed to be based on the previous board state it has moved. It would be a good way without moving the actual electro-magnet over each possible move.
Yeah would 100% work not the first to suggest this even found the paper tags I would use! This would be a future improvement the part the have yet to find would be the reader that I would mount on the head :)

Eyy thank you! Yeah its awesome some of the best tactile input devices are musical instruments like the launchpad! Recently there's been a protocol released called webMIDI that lets anything turn into a controller

How about using computer vision? RFID scanning or just detecting magnets with a single moving head is too slow. The board will always lose on time. I think you can print QR or some other tracking point under each piece and place camera under the desk. And, no, the head will not overlap with tracking points cause you can move it out of the way
Or you aren't planning for it to be semitransparent?
Yeah I've looked into the RFID tags it would be one of the best way but brings the complexity way up! You hit it right on the head of why I was avoiding a camera the idea is eventually this board is going to be hidden inside something that might not be transparent!
@@Jandodev I was thinking about RFID variations too, like gluing scanner to each of the board's squares, but it is too expensive. So a lot depends on speed of head and positions that you need to check. But if we checking only possible moves there is no illegal move detection. This is hard
Edit: About illegal detection: if we add a clock, then when the player finishes his turn, we can detect when he finished it. Then the board begins to check possible moves and if it didn’t notice a single move, then the move is illegal
