- Had this video on the back burner for a while, because reasons.
In anycase, Line, Jav and myself fly out below radar, wayyyyy around the AO to the spot where the enemy A-10s are operating.
It was a slaughter fest.
We see it as protecting our ground troops the Hogs were after, so.... yeah! hHaha.
Now we thought (Since there were a lot of 104th guys on their team) that they would call in for CAP help. But I guess they never did. We were there unchallenged for over an hour. We killed a LOT of Hogs, I cut out some footage (too excessive). So all and all we were very surprised. Only at the very end did they send in ONE guy after me as I was RTB... it was just weird. But better for us!
In anycase, a LOT of shit happened, both good and mostly bad so stick around to at least see the ending.

The reason Russians don't use catapults on their carriers is that steam catapults don't work well in cold climate. That's also one of the reason USN is developing EMALS
That is definitely NOT the reason. Also they have one carrier , no s not plural. Their military is an absolute joke lmao. They couldn’t afford to build a catapult carrier, let alone get the supplies needed AND put it all together. Most of the ships they build end up scrapped and sold off before even getting halfway finished.
a10 can out turn an su27 at low speed no? of course, good job going vertical. i remember a japanese zero ace who did that to wildcat pilots cuz they couldn't match his climb. his life ended when he tried to do that to a hellcat.

+Victor Katilis Not low speed, but low alt and good energy it can make one good turn and completely outturn a flanker. After the one turn, the A-10 loses. It has no energy to do a sustained turn rate. That's where the Flanker wins. But the A-10 for sure outturns the Su-27, at least in the initial turn. It's up in the air what happens after that. I have fought PLENTY of Flankers in my A-10 and won most of those fights because of the stupid tight turn rate.

What are the normal tactics for the SU-27/33? Just skirt right around the AO and come in low from the sides? I know we cant really go head to head with the F-15 as they have a ridiculously good radar and autonomous missiles which the Su's don't have. Any pointers? Thanks in advance. Great Vid.

Does the blast shield on the carrier not work in MP? I never see it work in MP but it works all the time in SP.
Hey ralfi just wondering. I'm in school to become a navy air traffic controller. Wouldn't wake turbulence affect you when ur taking off behind line. Or is wake turbulence not simulated in dcs?

Linebacker was derping about, and i just shot him then i saw you ralfi and knew it was you. i had a perfect lock on you and was half a second off shooting then you saw me at that moment i knew i was dead.
Pro tip. Next time, leave your nose below the horizon. You have a very tight turn rate and you could have probably whooped me if you hadn't gone in the vertical with me.
Of course I was banking on that though which is why I did it.
Still, awesome job taking Line out. His bitching about it made it all that much better.

Michael E It is a really good idea to get some dogfighting experience in that aircraft. It will help in these situations. It's not exactly unheard of to have A10s face off fighters, and I've done my share of killing Sukhois in my A10.

Hey Ralfi, I've been watching your videos for a couple of years now and just wanted to tell you keep up the great work. Also, if you were to suggest a flight sim for someone to get into sim flying, what would you suggest? I currently have DCS-A10 (bought it a while ago) but never could get REALLY into it, but would be willing to give it a try again, or buy another sim to try.

If you have FC3 or one of the simpler aircraft models try those out. Then let yourself get hooked :D

you need the radar lock, without it you get the funnel since there is nothing being tracked.

Jokes aside, a Ski Jump is a lot cheaper and requires 0 maintenance compared to a catapult.
I saw somewhere that the catapult puts a lot of stress on the frame of the plane from the excessive G's. Is that true?
Poised Tuber I'd have no idea, but in general there's a lot of stress involved in carrier operations. Planes that operate from aircraft carriers have always been build much stronger than ones that operate from land.
Ski jumps with arrested landing are stupid.
You're paying this HUGE amount of money for the ship, including everything needed to make a proper CV, and then you're going to go and cripple your capabilities compared to catapults to try and save a couple cents at the very end? It makes zero sense.
Tk3997 It makes sense if that's not an aircraft carrier but an aircraft-carrying heavy cruiser.
Бернардо Галкер Plus - for catapult the plane needs special undercarriage that can sustain the pulling (and well - that can be attached to the catapult)...

How do you use the radar? I'm sad to say I'm like Jav and wouldn't have seen anyone on my radar. It never seems to work for me. :/
I should clarify to say "how do you personally make use of the radar to find contacts?".

reason for launching catapult:
- They don't need to use it... their engines have enough power to get you in the air even with payload.
- It uses valuable space
- It can damage/kill
- If it breaks you can't launch a jet... Carrier becomes a useless ship.
BTW @ 15:53 you could already fire the missile.

The Su-33 is the Only Su-27 Variant that can take off from a carrier.
And it has Canards partly to give it better lift and a shorter takeoff distance.

Why would the Russians use a catapult? Unlike US Naval Carriers, they aren't expecting to launch anything big. The Russian carriers are more accurately designated "Aircraft capable missile cruisers." All that they actually are intended for is offshore support, and therefore only really plan on launching small-ish craft that can easily launch using the upward turned deck and without catapult assistance.
Ony carrier Ulyanovsk was cancelled when CCCP collapsed. Kuznetsov is heavy missile cruiser, not carrier. It only has flight deck larger than other cruisers and it operates few fighters to assist itself. Its main armament consists of battery of antiship P700 and huge battery of anti-aircraft missiles. Class of its own.

I'm not sure how accurately this is modelled. But it seems like you're firing both IR and pulse Doppler missiles from a side aspect. both of which are a huge no no for Russian missiles.
They were not in the Notch. As long as there is a +- 50 knot closure rate, you are fine.

Actually, it looks like it was the A-10 that killed Line who decided to rage switch to a fast-mover, not a different guy that actually cared about what was happening to the A-10s. Assuming that the guy who ejected as you and Line were talking about bringing him back to the carrier was him.
No... you totally missed the video.
After lines death, as I was RTB, line was heading towards me to meet back up. A fighter showed up on my 6 and I kept on trucking while Line went past me and pressed on him. He killed him while getting hit, then still managed to get back to the carrier.
Or were we watching two different videos mate?
ralfidude Guess I just made an incorrect assumption then. At 18:38 it shows a Blue player ejecting, which I assumed was the guy in the jet that Line shot down. It's the same name as the guy in the A-10 who killed Line at 14:46 and then tried to dogfight you at 16:16.
